While genomic testing is a great way to verify parentage of calves, it is not the end all for some situations. There are countries that require DNA testing on bulls to qualify for export shipment of frozen semen. In most cases, dams of AI bulls must be DNA tested as well to qualify for export. There are also a few counties that require the donor dams of embryos to be DNA tested be able to register the resulting offspring in those countries’ herd books. If you are looking to export embryos, be sure to have the potential buyer research import requirements for health testing. The potential buyer should also find out what is needed to register the offspring. The Brown Swiss Association requires that all donor dams must be parent verified by genomic or DNA testing to register the resulting offspring. All bulls must be genomic tested in order to register offspring.
From UC Davis info:
This DNA-based parentage test uses microsatellite marker analysis to compare the DNA profile of an offspring to the profiles of

possible parents. The markers reported include the 12 ISAG-recommended markers for cattle. Genotypes follow the international nomenclature standard for cattle.
A DNA profile of cattle-specific microsatellite markers is obtained from the offspring, potential dam, and potential sire(s), and parentage analysis is performed using this data. In this process, a computer program compares the DNA profile of the offspring to the profiles of the presumed parents. Candidate sires and dams may either qualify or be excluded as parents based on whether they share microsatellite marker alleles with the offspring. A parentage analyst then reviews the results and sends the final report. If a listed parent or parents are excluded, additional analysis is performed, including retesting of samples and the possible use of additional DNA markers to confirm the exclusion.

Hopefully, as you read this month’s Bulletin, the holidays are fast approaching and not behind us! In either case, let’s get caught up on the activities of the Brown Swiss Association.
Our November meeting was basically routine, with the exception that our newest board member, Dr. Kyle Thompson, attended his first monthly zoom meeting. Although Covid disrupted a lot in our daily lives, it did transform our monthly meetings. The face to face zoom interaction is a vast improvement from the conference calls of the past, where we were constantly interrupting one another because we didn’t know who was going to speak next. This month we have the best kind of meeting – in person!
As we prepare to convene in Beloit, our topics will be finances, classifications results, 2025 goals, 2025 national shows, committee reports, upcoming conventions, and the fate of the Brown Swiss Bulletin. Some committees have met, and others will be meeting after the first of the year. Where possible, I have added new people to our committees. If you still have an interest to get involved, please reach out to me.
I am pleased to report that board member Laurie Winkelman has successfully filled every month of our calendar, and it is currently at the printer. The October/November issue of The Bulletin had five advertisers: Wayne & Connie Sliker (who have had the back cover for years), The Brown Swiss Historical Society, two board members and our publisher Dairy Agenda Today (which really doesn’t count, but they needed to fill the space!). If you want The Bulletin to continue, we need more advertisers. Please consider taking out an ad.
On a personal note, my herd has just gone through the bird flu. As a friend mentioned to me, imagine your worst-case scenario regarding the health of your herd and multiply it by ten! It is a grueling process to say the least, with a high intensity of three weeks. We have had multiple visits from state authorities and are required to report daily to our county health department regarding the physical well-being of our employees. As of today, over 400 herds have been infected in California. To my knowledge, only four herds have been released after being quarantined. We must have three consecutive weeks of negative bulk-tank samples to get out of quarantine and to resume normal activities. Our Brown Swiss animals are responding similarly to their Holstein herd mates. I hope none of you get to experience what we have lived through this past month.
In the spirit of the holiday season, I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as your President and appreciate all that our staff does to support our membership. I am also thankful for you, the members and the hard work you do each and every day to keep our organization strong. I would like to wish each of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Sincerely,
Brian Pacheco

Nestled between rivers, mountains and lakeshore, Lake Champlain Valley is rich in scenic charm and history. It is also home to Allan and Michael Brisson, where their farm is located only eight miles from Lake Champlain near Ferrisburgh, Vermont.
Allan grew up farming, then purchased a 350-acre farmstead in 1975 and went into milking cows on his own. The original 40 cows were a combination of Holsteins and Brown Swiss, and has multiplied into 1,000 cows at two locations, one with 750 grade Holsteins, the other location milking 250 registered Brown Swiss. The original farmland has swelled to 2,500 acres. On which Brisson raises all the grain and forage needed by the herds.
The Brown Swiss herd is on DHIA test, has a herd average of 21,000# milk and 950# fat. Both herds are milked in parlors and the Holsteins are metered and monitored using the Dairy Comp platform. If dairy cows are the heart of the Allandra farm, it is the Brown Swiss that are soul to the business.
There is no hesitation when saying her name; Cutting Edge CP Margo ET. “She’s one of a handful of Brown Swiss known by her first name,” Allan says.
Margo is ten years old and due this spring. She is classified 4E95, one of only about a dozen Brown Swiss that have attained 95 classification points. She has six All-American nominations, was All-American in 2020, and Reserve All-American twice. Her daughter Allandra Rich Marcy is following in her mother’s footsteps with two Reserve AllAmerican titles to her name.
Allan bought his first Brown Swiss in 1967, growing his holding to about thirty head until 1999. “I had trouble getting them bred, like a lot of people do, and got out of the breed for about four years.” Ken Main of Elite Dairy in New York was the catalyst that drew him back, mentoring him into a herd that grew quickly. “The key he taught me is that Swiss typically ovulate later than Holsteins,” Allan said. “We see them in heat and breed twelve hours later as our rule of thumb, but I began breeding the Swiss two consecutive days and it turned everything around for me; I’d encourage anyone struggling with conception to give it a try before giving up.”
Main was more than a mentor to Allan. “We became best friends. It was such an honor to walk around with him at places like World Dairy Expo and everyone knew him, and he knew everyone.” Main passed away in 2023, leaving a legacy of wisdom, elite Brown Swiss bloodlines, and a community of people touched by his friendship and influence.
Hemorrhagic Bowel Syndrome (HBS) is a common problem in the Brown Swiss Breed, and Brisson didn’t escape its impacts, loosing
multiple cows before correcting the core cause. Not looking for a bandage to mask the symptoms he dug deep into nutrition, rations, and feeds. “Every farm, their resources, and feed materials are different, but I strongly recommend that people closely monitor fecal starch levels and adjust feeding programs through feeds and not products that only mask symptoms,” he said.
Many eyes are watching the conservation practices of farmers in Lake Champlain Valley. Only eight miles from the lake itself, Allan has taken a proactive approach to conservation and keeping manure runoff out of surface water. “It doesn’t cost, it pays,” he says.
The deep green coloration of his forages prove that conservation practices can strengthen a farm’s ecosystem and improve soil health and fertility through mechanical means. Two-and-a half miles of drag line can reach eighty-five percent of the farm’s fields where liquid manure is injected evenly into the sod. Yes, there is some soil disturbance, he says, but injection is followed by a roller operation, smoothing the disturbance and resealing the surface. “We can apply about 500-750 tons per hour at two miles per hour. We are getting amazing results with 94% nitrogen retention with injection compared to only 40% retention by surface spreading.”
“We are utilizing 50% more of the nitrogen we already produce on the farm and decreasing the runoff by 80-90%. It is a win for the farm, the water, and the environment,” says Allan.
Allan has been a member of the BSA program for many years and has benefitted from the scheduled classifications and free registrations up to six months of age that come with the membership.
Pactole, O’Malley, Daredevil, and Get Lucky are the current sires of choice for calving two-year olds. Mature service sires include Prince, Top Notch, Design, Magnum, and Nashville.
His farm has an open-door policy for visitors who want to talk cows. “I love to talk about cows, especially Brown Swiss cows. If you are in the area, you’re welcome to stop and visit!”
Unfortunately, show season is drawing to an end for most of us. This means that aside from Christmas, my favorite time of the year is ending. Isabella and I just finished our last show of the fall season, which makes me a little sad. We rounded out the season with a spectacular trip to Louisville at the North American International Livestock Exposition. The show was great, with highquality animals and high-quality juniors on their halters. We had the opportunity to go through the barns, interact with our juniors, and continued our TikToks, which everyone enjoyed participating in. I also had the pleasure of interacting with the juniors while handing out their numbers and show shirts, which was fun for me. This show is one of my favorite shows to go to as there is so much to see and do, including a massive “country store” to go shopping in! But there is also such a great group of juniors and exhibitors at the show. While I will miss the fall show season and getting to see all of my new friends, I am already counting down the days until spring shows start.
Hannah Loftin 2024-2025 Youth Ambassador
I hope all of you wonderful Brown Swiss youth had a good show season and year! I thought I would take some time this month to talk about all of the youth programs that the Association offers. First off, there is the Junior Bell Ringer contest, which is open to any Junior-owned or leased animal. Similar to the Junior AllAmerican contest, youth submit a professional photograph of their
Contact Information:
animal to the Association along with name, age, parentage, and show record. After the judges have time to decide, there will be a winning animal for each age group of cows that were submitted. These applications are due December 15th.
Next, there is the Youth Scholarship/Grant Award. This is a Scholarship or Grant in the value of $1000 that can be used in two different ways. The first is to pay towards a degree in agriculture or any dairy-related field. The second is to buy a registered Brown Swiss animal for those not attending college.
The next award is for Youth Production. Each youth must submit a DHI testing sheet for the month of the cow’s completion of the 305-day record. For each district, the herd with the highest deviation average will be the winner. The cow with the highest deviation overall is named the National Youth Production Award winner. Similar to the Production Award, there is a Youth Cheese Yield Award. This award goes to the cow with the highest cheese yield over a 30-day period. There are district and national winners.
This next award is my personal favorite (I am a little biased) ...the National Youth Ambassador. For this position, there is an application submission and an interview for the finalists. As the Ambassador, you get the chance to travel to shows, meet and connect with youth, and attend the National Convention.
The next two awards are very similar to each other, so I will explain them together. These are the Junior Youth Achievement Award and the Youth Achievement Award. The Junior Youth Achievement Award was created specifically for those ages 8-15, whereas the Youth Achievement Award is open to all ages 15 and up. Each award recognizes youth members for their outstanding achievements in the Brown Swiss breed.
The final junior contest is the Youth Video. For this contest, youth members have to submit a fun and creative video about the Brown Swiss breed and the dairy industry in general. There are multiple divisions and there will be one winner for each.
All of these award applications are due March 31st. I highly encourage all youth to apply for the great opportunities! There is no limit to how many you can apply for each year so why not apply for them all!
I hope everyone has a wonderful end to their year!

May 20, 1946 – November 7,
William Bruce Allan of Dike, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on November 7, 2024, surrounded by his family and his beloved rescue dog Laydeigh.
Bill is survived by his daughters: Susan Allan Croft and husband Thomas of Springtown, Sharon Allan Mayo of Ft Worth, and his son Travis Allan of Denton. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Cody and wife Haley, Carson Croft, Cooper Croft, Austin Allan, Kaci Allan, and Jordan Mayo; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Florence Allan of Burbank California; his son Trevor Allan of Sulphur Springs; his sister Betty Stone of Boonesville, Arkansas; niece Jenni Stone Murillo; and his old roping horse Zip.
Bill was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1946. He spent his early years in Canada, but moved to California during his teen years where he graduated from Burbank High School and Cal Poly Technic State University. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1967 following a motorcycle accident.
Among his first of many careers, he was a dairy farmer and Ag teacher in Newport, Vermont. After moving to Texas in 1974, he continued in the dairy business and began a career in Farm and Ranch Real Estate. If you met Bill once, you had a friend. He was a member of both the National and Texas Brown Swiss Associations. His Sunset Canyon Dairy milking herd was dispersed May 25, 1985. He was a regular attendee of the Heart of America Show and Sale. In 2011 the Heart of America Expo Committee presented Bill with The Waldo Enns Memorial Trophy, created to recognize those who exemplified the ability, character, friendliness, stewardship and sportsmanship practiced by Waldo Enns. He more than qualified. He sold the dairy in the mid 90’s and entered the realm of law enforcement as a member of the Hopkins County Sheriff’s posse, later entering the police academy and becoming a sheriff’s deputy. He later took on the role of Hopkins County Constable and enjoyed eight years of service, making many friends (and a few enemies) along the way. His final career choice landed him as the court Bailiff for Hopkins County. He retired (officially) in 2020, but still enjoyed filling in at the court when needed.
Never one to meet a stranger, Bill enjoyed his church families at St James Catholic Church for many years and in recent years at Sulphur Spring First Baptist. He spent time singing and playing the guitar in each choir and kept his fellow Sunday School members laughing and smiling with his quick wit and silly jokes.
Bill loved to travel and see new things. He especially enjoyed his annual beach trips with his children and grandchildren. He had traveled to every state in America, with the exception of Alaska. Road trips with the grandkids were another of his favorite ways to see the sights, and he spent many hours allowing them to choose the routes and the sights to see. He will be remembered as a loving and proud
father, grandfather, and a friend to everyone he met. He lived his motto of “be kind to people and they’ll be kind to you.”
