The President's Pen
Greetings from the field! I am writing this letter in my hotel room after attending a week-long sales training session for my job that supplements my cow habit. The Vytelle sales team came together to learn more about how we provide our customers cutting edge technology as well as gather insight on the strengths we bring to the team, and some goal setting activities. I learned more about our company processes, goals and expectations of the team members.
This new information gives me the tools to assist my customers improve their herds and bottom line as well as help me work more cohesively with the team members in achieving our goals. As I sat through the discussions and training, my mind went to how similar processes could impact our Kansas Angus Association members. What are we doing to learn about innovative practices, stretch our ability to work in teams or with family members and the impact these things have on our operations?
There are numerous opportunities for producers to learn about new technologies in reproduction, nutrition, equipment, herd health, and resource management, etc. at the local, state, and national levels. Just like we encourage our junior members to explore new activities to learn about the beef industry, the same can be applied to our adult membership. I challenge you all to attend one meeting or conference in the next few months that allows you to explore new ideas, find solutions to an issue you are experiencing or most importantly the chance to network with others within our industry. I have found some of the best conversations happen in the hallways of these conferences. Sharing experiences, offering and receiving advice as well as gaining valuable insight are some of the benefits gained at these events.
Take the new information and share it with your customers through an email, social media post or a general conversation. You will find it is well worth the time to attend any type of meeting that can assist you to make small or large improvements to your operation.
Never stop learning because life never stops teaching.
Best regards,
Lynne Hinrichsen

Retallick-Riley talks Bovine Congestive Heart Failure
National Cattlemen’s Beef Association hosted AGI president Kelli Retallick-Riley to speak about research on cattle heart health at annual convention.
Cattle feeders who lose livestock to Bovine Congestive Heart Failure (BCHF) know the impact of the disease firsthand. Ready to hear about the latest research on BCHF, feeders and others industry professionals attended a Cattlemen’s College session presented by Kelli RetallickRiley, president of Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI®). The session took place February 1 at the 2024 National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s annual convention and trade show in Orlando, Florida.
While not a veterinarian, Retallick-Riley excels in the field of quantitative genetics and is interested in finding ways to combat BCHF from a genetic perspective. She said research, so far, shows heart health (based on heart scores) is heritable, giving her and her team hope that genetic tools can be developed to reduce risk of the disease in cattle. Retallick-Riley said she also knows there are other elements outside of genetics, like management practices and the health of other organs, to be considered. “Because of its low incidence rate, only evaluating cattle dying from the disease is too limiting,” she said.
Recent research has focused on identifying animals more prone to BCHF. At the same time, the frequency of the disease has been increasing. She said this increase could mean either there really are more cases of BCHF occurring, the industry is getting better at diagnosing it, or a combination of the two factors. Ultimately, the direct cause or causes of BCHF are not yet understood.
Besides the obvious loss of life, what is particularly painful about BCHF is the cattle dying of it inflict a larger economic impact than those lost at earlier stages in life. According to the feedlot studies referenced by Retallick-Riley, affected cattle were dying of BCHF at an average of 110 days on feed with individual deaths taking place at points across a large swath of the feeding phase.
She shared a few other known pieces to the disease’s puzzle, including a connection to respiratory health.
“When animals were culled and treated for [acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP)], they had a higher probability or a higher rate of succumbing to bovine congestive heart failure,” she said.
Researchers have also studied cattle in the complex disease category, meaning they have been treated for at least one other disease. Retallick-Riley said of these cattle, “they also had a higher probability or a higher rate of being called a heart disease death.”
Without complete information on animals’ health, it is difficult to know if some of these were misdiagnosed and treated for AIP or complex disease without any advantage. When looking at beef-type cattle, beef x dairy type, versus dairy-type cattle and their crosses, she said there are similar ratios for instance of disease. Across the board, she and research partners are seeing high to modest genetic correlations between heart scores and performance traits including hot carcass weight, with little to no correlation to marbling score in a study presented by Colorado State University. Looking more at the prevalence of BCHF, from 2017-2019 “less than 1% of cattle placed on feed were dying of this disease,” Retallick-Riley said, and the call to research the disease came about as a grassroots effort among producers.
A consistent theme since that time, as with most research efforts, is the need for quality data.
Relying on records from producers and researchers alike – heart scores, genetic testing and phenotypic data – all continue to be important for better understanding BCHF.
“Animals that are dying of congestive heart failure deaths, those are the ones that never make it to the processing plant,” Retallick-Riley said. “That also means that good data recording in the field is crucial as well.” When looking at heart scores in particular, preliminary results of current research efforts show a 23% incidence rate of BCHF when hearts score as a 3 or 4. As a reminder, there are no 5s at the packer in the recent data collected by AGI, because those hearts have already given out under the pressure of the disease.
When studying this disease, Retallick-Riley said she tries to think of the whole animal as a system rather than just focusing on the heart. “Heart score genetic tools could potentially help us reduce the caseload, but I doubt that it’s going to eliminate the disease entirely,” Retallick-Riley said. “Colorado State’s research has preliminary heritability estimates of about 0.28. What about the other 72%?”She said, “If we put direct selection process on heart score alone, we could create cattle with less heart remodeling. We may also decrease the carcass weight on these cattle based on initial reports.”
Retallick-Riley said her team at AGI® and partners on the project have thought about developing some type of multi-trait index, but more research is needed to identify the best tools for widespread use.
“One of the things that we need to continue to think about is how we’re going to use this at the end of the road, how we’re going to use this to impact production and selection decisions,” she said.

Chris & Sharee Sankey
Sankey’s 6N Ranch, Council Grove Kansas
Written by Lindsay Sankey
Everything you’re about to read about Chris and Shree Sankey of Council Grove, can be confirmed by this simple preface:
American Angus Association records indicate that Chris Sankey’s membership in the organization began on September 6, 1978. And just 64 days later, that membership was transferred to Chris and Sharon Sankey, on November 9, 1978.
From the beginning, their work in, dedication to, and passion for the Angus breed in Kansas has been a partnership.
Thinking back to the beginning, Chris and Sharee are testaments to the idea that you never know where a conversation can take you. A
Chris and Sharee own and operate Sankey’s 6N Ranch outside Council Grove, Kansas and have called that land home since the fall of 1982 when a Kansas City business family, the Norquists, were looking to sell or lease their ranch in the Flint Hills. Mrs. Norquist loved the show cattle aspect of the beef industry, and Sharee happened to cross paths with her at, none other than, the American Royal. There, the Sankeys were able to visit with her about their aspirations as a young couple in the Angus breed.
This conversation proved to change the trajectory of the Sankey’s lives, as it gave them the opportunity to lease the 2,000-acre 6N Ranch. In 1989 the Norquist family was ready to sell, affording the Sankeys the opportunity to purchase the headquarters site and the surrounding land. This purchase was the first building block of Sankey’s 6N Ranch.
But before the 6N Ranch, the Flint Hills, and the American Royal conversation, Chris and Sharee Sankey were two students at Kansas State University on the same livestock judging team. Chris was born and raised in Sterling, Kansas, and was introduced to the Angus breed by his father and grandfather who ranched west of Hutchinson.
Sharee was born and raised a Laflin, working daily within one of the Angus breed’s pioneering herds, Laflin Angus Ranch, of Olsburg.
The two married in August of 1978 – and of course filed jointly with the American Angus Association shortly thereafter.
Both Chris and Sharee have extended their time and talents to the Angus breed by serving on state and national boards, and also contributing to the association by being on numerous committees.
Their leadership and volunteer service began as far back as 1990, when Chris was Kansas Angus Association President. Sharee went on to serve in that capacity in 2015.
Sharee has been president of the Kansas Angus Auxiliary, as well as the president of the American Angus Auxiliary 2005-2006, both positions where she worked endlessly to support the youth of the breed through scholarship programs.
Chris served on the American Angus Association Board of Directors in 2011-2014.
Chris also served chair of Kansas Angus Association judge selection committee for several years, and Sharee is the current chairman of Kansas Angus Association judge selection committee.
In 2018 they were one of fifty barns painted across the United States with the Certified Angus Beef brand. And finally, the 6N ranch has twice served as National Angus Tour stops.
Beyond service as individuals, Sankey’s 6N Angus herd is focused on raising cattle that have quality from every angle. They believe that cattle first and foremost must have high quality phenotype. They also know that in today’s world you must back that phenotype with genetic information that makes them relevant for the todays beef industry. They refuse to sacrifice any of those parts for the other.

Their first memorable success in the show ring was R&J reno 415. Reno went on to be named Grand Champion Bull at the 1987 Iowa State Fair, Res. Grand Champion Angus Bull 1987 Ozark Empire Fair, and Res. Grand Champion Bull 1987 Nebraska State Fair.
Together they have bred and raised two American Angus Association Show Bulls of the Year:
• Sankey’s Lazer 609 of 6N (2007-2008) who was also Grand Champion Bull at the 2008 National Western Stock Show
• Sankeys Justified 101 (2012-2013) son of Lazer who was Grand Champion Bull at the 2013 National Western Stock Show
If you asked their opinion, they might also say that 2020 wasn’t all bad, as they purchased and exhibited the 2020-2021 Show Bull of the Year. Silveiras Forbes 8088 (2020-2021) and he was also the first-ever Grand Champion Angus Bull at the 2021 Cattlemen’s Congress
They also consign bulls to the National Angus Bull Sale annually, as well as bull tests around the great state of Kansas and at the Midland Bull Test in Billings, Montana.
In 2018 they were awarded the National Western Stock Show Industry Leader Award, in Denver Colorado.
In 2015 together they were named American Angus Association’s Herdsman of the Year and in 2021 they received the Western States Herdsman of the Year award at the Western National Angus Futurity in Reno, Nevada.
Chris and Sharee know that the Business Breed isn’t only about bulls, so they host an Annual Fall Female sale each September in Council Grove.
Angus cattle, of course, aren’t the only reason Chris and Sharee keep the stock trailer rolling as “lifers” as their children like to call them. Within them remains a strong dedication to the improvement and longevity of the Brangus breed.
Years ago, Sharee’s father, Bob Laflin (who needs no introduction) needed pasture for his small herd of Brangus cows, so the newlyweds obliged, sparking a fire that would go on burn brightly for decades. The strong use of AI helped expand and improve the Brangus herd, with a sharp focus on Brangus genetics that were more the type and kind of Angus cattle. Smooth underlines, and cleaner fronted Brangus were what the pair consistently bred towards. At that time, they were selecting cattle that were ahead of the times, as the Brangus breed is shifting more that direction today.
Chris and Sharee remain highly motivated by the opportunity within the Brangus breed. Today their work focuses on the Ultra Black program, consisting of registered Angus and registered Brangus animals on either side of the pedigree.
Believe it or not, along with the cattle raising, they also raised kids that have gone on to be fairly normal adults: Son Cody and daughter Jeana Hurlbut.
Chris and Sharee “drug us up and down the show road” as daughter Jeana puts it, offering the children every opportunity to learn the value of hard work and sound competition. No matter what color ribbon returned to the stalls during the 80’s, 90’s and 2000s, they understood that the work was part of a grander vision for Sankey’s 6N Ranch. Both Cody and Jeana were heavily involved in two junior programs attending both annual Junior National shows, served on junior boards, participated in contests
and showed many class and division winners.
Jeana and Cody both served as president of the Kansas Junior Angus Association and Jeana served on the NJAA board of directors as Vice Chairman in 2003-2005.
During those years, Chris and Sharee also served as KJAA Advisors.
Today, Cody and his wife, Lindsay, own and operate Sankey Angus outside Economy, Indiana. Together we are raising two children, Caroline and Cyrus. Cody is the Associate Vice President of Beef Programs for GENEX and Lindsay is a writer and manages much of the day-to-day farm and family operations.
Jeana and her husband, Dustin Hurlbut, live near Raymond, South Dakota with two daughters, Bayler & Mattie. Together they own and operate Hurlbut Cattle. Jeana works for SCI Designs as a graphic designer in the livestock industry and Dustin is the CEO of the American Chianina Association.
The evening Sankeys won the Honorary Lifetime Member award, a note written by Barb Laflin was read in closing.
Dear Chris and Sharee , I’m sorry I could not be with you tonight in this time of recognition. AND IT IS A SPECIAL TIME OF RECOGNITION but ALSO A CELEBATION in how you have carried the mantle of the family heritage of the Angus Breed that was passed on to you from your parents, your grand parents, and your great grandparents. All of who were the pioneers of the breed for the industry.
Your contribution has been not only raising superior stock - holding offices in the state and national organizations - but I am so proud of how you have been deeply involved in the lives of the Angus Youth. Many times you have taken local youth who had no way of being involved with Angus heifers and made a way for their lives to experience the beautiful relationship of owning, caring for and showing an Angus heifer. So many of life's important lessons were found for them as they had the responsibility of this endeavor. Thank you for all the young lives you've touched. ( Barbra Laflin)
Congratulations, Chris & Sharee.
Editor ‘s Note: The previous was written by Lindsay Sankey and read by Cody Sankey during the Honorary Member presentation at the Kansas Angus Association Annual Banquet on January 20, 2024 in Hutchinson . The script was accompanied by a picture video presentation compiled by Jeana Sankey Hurlbut.
