Welcome to the Dikemans’ and Randy Huninghake’s 9th Annual Simmental, SimAngusTM, Angus and Red Angus Bull Sale! This is the ninth year of holding our sale. The sale will be on March 9 at 1:00. The sale will be at Randy Huninghake’s Ranch Southeast of Frankfort, KS (2443 26th Road). See the enclosed map for directions. We will have 20 Simmental/SimAngus bulls, and 30 Angus and Red Angus bulls in our sale. Our philosophy is that “The ‘quality’ goes in before the brand goes on”. This means that we cull some bulls before and after weaning, some on pedigree, some on performance after weaning, and some on disposition. The auction format will be casual, relaxed, and personal with Colonel Mike Williams as the auctioneer. We will be using DV Online Auction, so the bulls will not be run through the ring but will be shown on large TV screens. However, the bulls will be on display close to the sale ring. We think there are several bulls of high quality for use in registered seedstock operations. A video of the bulls will be linked to our Web sites at “dikemansimmentals.com” and “HuninghakeAngusRanch.com” as well as on DVAuction. The Dikeman bulls were developed by Randy on his ranch, and he did a great job. Bulls are available for viewing at any time on 26 Road. Look for our signs. Our bulls have been tested for genetic defects. All bulls being sold have passed a breeding soundness exam. All SimAngusTM bulls are non-carriers of genetic defects as well as all Angus and Red Angus bulls. Nearly all bulls are either sired by Artificial Insemination or Embryo Transfer. EPDs and Indexes on Simmental and SimAngusTM bulls are Genomically Enhanced to significantly improve their accuracy. We developed the catalog with the bulls listed in sale order to allow you to more easily keep track of the cattle and their corresponding data during the sale. In appreciation for customers recommending our sale to friends and neighbors, we are offering a $50 cash discount to customers whose referrals purchase a bull. And, there is a $100 per bull discount for buyers who pay for their purchase(s) and take their bulls home on sale day or the next day. For buyers who purchase more than one bull, $100 will be deducted after the first bull. We are committed to Performance, Excellence, and Integrity. Thank you for your interest in Dikeman Simmentals and SimAngusTM and Randy Huninghake’s Angus and Red Angus bulls. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March 9. Lunch will be served at 11:30.

Bulls/Fertility Guarantee

All Angus and Red Angus bulls were fertility tested by Dr. Griffin, from Frankfort, and sell guaranteed for 3 years. All Simmental and SimAngus bulls were fertility tested by Dr. Nora (Nora Livestock Veterinary Resources). If any bull purchased from Dikeman or Huninghake proves to be structurally unsound (because of swollen hocks, bow legged, post-legged, or stifled not due to injury) or fails to pass a breeding soundness exam after the 1st year, provided that the bull’s incapacity was not caused by injury or disease or poor nutritional management, the value remaining is calculated by reducing 1/3 of the purchase price/ year for the 2nd and 3rd years minus $1,600 or the full sale barn salvage value, whichever is greater. This guarantee does not include loss due to abuse, neglect, illness and/or acts of God (lightning, flood, getting hit on a public road, etc.) or death. This guarantee only applies if a bull is in a single pasture, unless another bull(s) was purchased in the same year and managed together from the same breeder. If a bull is turned out with one or more bulls from a different breeder or with an older bull, we will only provide 50% coverage for the 1st year for injury to penis or structure. If a bull develops foot rot, or disease, or has a penile cut or break, or testicle injury, or freeze damage, or punctured hooves, the guarantee will not apply.

Insurance

Insurance will be provided by Jensen Livestock Agency. Shelia Jensen - 785-262-1116. We highly recommend purchasing insurance if you do not take your bull on sale day, as cattle become the property of the buyer at the end of the sale.

Sale Terms and Conditions

All animals sell under the terms and conditions set forth by their representative breed association.

Pick-Up Discount/Volume Discount/After Sale/Delivery

A $100 per bull discount is available to buyers who pay for their purchase(s) and take their bull(s) home on sale day or the next day. We will feed all other bulls free until April 1, and then $5.00 per day up to May 1, 2024 at which time bulls must leave Huninghake Ranch. Bulls will be delivered free within 200 miles of Huninghake’s Ranch. Outside of this 200 mile range, we will guarantee that delivery costs will not exceed $350. We will work with you on economical delivery beyond that point. Cattle will not be delivered free after April 10. You will receive a $100 discount per bull after the first bull. ALL credits must be redeemed with the breeder they were purchased from.

In the event that a bull is not a breeder, he will be replaced if one is available, or credit will be given on another bull in next year’s sale. The salvage value for a bull will be set at $1,400 or the full sale barn salvage value, whichever is greater. This will be deducted from the credit for a bull that must be replaced or for a subsequent sale. We strongly recommend death insurance. If bulls are not going to be turned out for more than 60 days after our sale, we recommend that they be re-tested. We also recommend that buyers observe bulls at least twice a week for more than a month after turnout to make sure bulls are breeding cows.

Semen Interest

Health/Management

Each owner is retaining1/4 semen interest in all bulls. The owner of the bull would receive 3/4 of the income from semen sales minus expenses. For most commercial programs, this will not interfere with the natural service use of the bull. It means that the breeder may want to arrange with the buyer to collect semen on a bull. Or, in the case that the bull proves to be a superior sire, and the buyer and/or breeder market semen on a bull, the breeder would share in 1/4 of the profit and get semen at cost.

All bulls have received BRVD, P13 and a live respiratory virus vaccine. They were poured for internal and external parasites.

On Line Phone Bids

If you are unable to be at the sale it will be broadcast live on DV Auction.

The Value of Performance

Benefits of Crossbreeding (cont.)

Simmental and SimAngus bulls can easily add 30-50 lbs. to weaning weights in British based cowherds, and their progeny will perform well in the feed yard and on the rail if you retain ownership until harvest. In addition, females from Simmental and SimAngus sired calves would make great replacements, especially when the females are Simmental x British crosses. If a bull that sires an average of 25 calves per year for 4 years and adds 30 lbs. average weaning weight per calf at $200/100 lbs. would be worth at least $6,000 more than the price of a bull that adds no additional weight at weaning. You can do the math if they add more weaning weight than 30 lbs. and sell for a higher price than this example.

Angus or Baldy cows; or Angus bulls on Simmental SimAngus, Hereford, or Baldy cows to create crossbred feeder calves and replacements is a great way to capitalize on heterosis. Research at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center shows that Simmental and Angus breeds rank first or second among Continental and British breeds, respectively, in nearly all traits studied.

Get Paid for Looking

We will ‘pay’ you to look at our bulls prior to sale day! If you meet with the seller of Dikeman or Huninghake bulls prior to sale day to look at the bulls, we will deduct $100 from the purchase per bull.

For producers who keep replacement females and retain ownership through the feedlot of all steers and heifers not kept for replacements, the American Simmental Association All Purpose Index (API) does a great job of identifying potential value differences among bulls. For example, a bull with an API of 170 would be worth $50 more per calf than a bull .with an API of 120. Using these two API examples, if a bull produces 30 calves per year for 4 years, the value difference between these two bulls would be $6,000!

Angus EPDs values above or below breed average

CED - Calving Ease Direct is expressed as the difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. BW – Actual birth weight taken at calving. WW – Weaning weight adjusted to 205 day equivalent and adjusted for dam’s age. YW – Yearling weight adjusted to 365 day equivalent. SC – Scrotal circumference measured to the nearest 0.5 cm. and adjusted to 365 day equivalent. CEM - Maternal CE - % unassisted births from calving daughters. Milk - Maternal Milk - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk. CW - Carcass Weight - pounds of carcass weight. Marbling - percent of marbling score or %IMF REA – The cross-sectional area of the ribeye muscle at a point between the 12th and 13th rib. Ribeye area is used in the calculation of yield grade. Fat - Back Fat or Rib Fat - inches of carcass back fat thickness. $ Value Indexes $ Values are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers. Just as with EPD’s, variation in $ Values between animals indicates average expected differences in relative value of progeny if random mating is assumed and the calves are exposed to the same environment. $W: Weaned Calf Value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. A larger number is favorable for selecting more cost effective females in most environments. $B: Beef Value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. The $B value combines the contributions of $F and $G. $C: Combined Value expressed in dollars per head, includes all 15 traits involved in $M and $B. $C aims for maximum profitability with cowherds that retain some heifers for replacements, but retain ownership on cull heifers and all steers through the feedlot and sell on a quality based carcass grid.

For Angus bulls, $Value Indexes are expressed in dollars per head to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value $W (an index value epressed in dollars per head) is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. For example, a bull with a $W value of $70 would be expected to produce calves worth $20 more per calf than a bull with a $W value of $50.

Benefits of Crossbreeding

Capitalizing on ’heterosis’ by crossbreeding is a very valuable tool in beef cattle production. Probably the most significant and long term study of heterosis was conducted by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Nebraska. That study showed that 80 crossbred cows producing crossbred calves are as economical in life cycle production as 100 straight bred cows raising straight bred calves! This 20% bonus in efficiency starts with the increased fertility of crossbred cows, which is followed by increased vigor and hardiness of the newborn calves. Crossbred cows producing crossbred calves wean a higher percent- age of calf crop and the calves are heavier. This carries over to increased performance of the calves in the feedlot. Crossbred calves also usually sell for higher prices. In addition to all of these advantages, longevity of crossbred cows is also increased, which means that more heifers can be sold or finished in a feedlot rather than kept for replacements. Ultrasound Measurements Explained

Simmental EPDs values above or below breed average

Fat Thickness - measured at the 12th-13th rib and reported in inches. Most of the fat thickness measurements on these bulls are in a very desirable range; which means they have some fat cover, but are not fat. Ribeye Area - measure at the 12th-13th rib and reported in square inches. REA is an important component of the USDA yield grade determinations of beef carcasses. Larger ribeyes result in more desirable yield grade numbers and a higher percent of the carcass as trimmed retail product. Yearling bulls should have at least 1.1 square inches/100 lb. of live weight, and larger ribeye areas are generally more desirable. However, extremely large ribeyes (> 1.3 square inches/100 lb. of live weight) are not necessarily desirable. %Intramuscular Fat - percentage of Intramuscular Fat, (%IMF) measured in a longitudinal scan of the ribeye muscle from the 11th to the 13th rib. It is a measure of marbling, which is the primary factor that determines USDA quality grade of carcasses. %IMF values for yearling Simmental bulls generally fall in the range of 2.5% to 5.0%. Yield Grade - EPDS for Yield Grade are calculated from ultrasound measurements. YG is the USDA grading system for determining % meat yield differences among carcasses. USDA yield grades are numbered 1-5, with 1 representing a very muscular, trim carcass with a high % meat yield; and a 5 representing a very fat, light-muscled carcass with a low % meat yield. Yield grades can be calculated to the nearest 10th, such as 2.5, 3.9, etc. The average range for Simmental sired progeny would be about 2.2-2.8.

CE - Calving Ease - % unassisted births from two-year old heifers. Example: For a CE EPD of 15, one would expect 10% more unassisted births than for a bull with an EPD of 5. BW - Birth Weight - Actual birth weight taken at calving. WW - Weaning Weight - pounds of weaning weight due to growth. YW - Yearling Weight - pounds of yearling weight due to growth. MCE - Maternal CE - % unassisted births from calving daughters. Milk - Maternal Milk - pounds of weaning weight due to dam’s milk. Docility EPDs - A measure of disposition. Breed average is 11.8. A higher value than 11.8 means that cattle are more docile than average. CWT - Carcass Weight - pounds of carcass weight. YG - Yield Grade - tenths of a yield grade. MRB - Marbling - percent of marbling score or %IMF REA - Ribeye Area - square inches of ribeye SHR - Shear Force in pounds required to shear through 1/2 inch cores of cooked steaks. The more ‘negative’ a value is, the more tender the meat is. Simmental breed average is -0.33. For example, a value of -0.55 means more tender meat than average. API - All Purpose Index - $ per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. TI - Terminal Index - $ per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario.

Buyer Testimony: Dr. Ken Odde and his son John from Pollard, SD sold one lot of 86 head weighing 658 lbs. at Mobridge, SD that brought $2.9750/lb., which equated to $1,958/ hd. A second lot of 98 head weighing 567 lbs. brought $3.30/ lb., which equated to $1,871/hd. He used the ASA Feeder Profit Calculator that integrates genetics and management of feeder cattle into the calculation, and a picture of the information on the Certificate was presented on the “big screen” at the sale, and buyers were presented with the information. The calculated value/bonus was $12.38 per 100 lb. The auctioneer and Casey Perman, one of the sale barn owners, both plugged the Feeder Profit Calculator from the auction block. Dr. Odde communicated to ASA Specialists (including Michael) that four of the sires of these feeder cattle were Dikeman bulls.

A SimAngus bull out of a nice first calf heifer. He is modest in size, structurally correct, and attractive. His EPDs have been suspended because the ASA states that they cannot confirm that he is out of the dam I reported because they cannot find the assay results. As I recall, he has good EPDs. I will guarantee that his pedigree is correct.

Oh my look at this genetic gem. You will notice the power of performane in this calf. His mother is awesome and made just the way you want a great cow to look. Take advantage of the years of well calculated matings we have made.

3-Year Guarantee

All bulls sell with a 3-year guarantee on feet & legs and semen. If a bull’s feet & legs go bad and he fails a semen check for the following seasons after purchased, a credit will be provided for those breeding seasons. Credit will equal the remaining years on the purchase price minus the salvage value. For example, if a bull fails a soundness or semen test the third year, a 33% credit will apply. Illness, foot rot, or injury to feet and legs will not be covered. A statement from a veterinarian must be provided for a claim for unsoundness or failure of a semen test. 10

Before Turning out 1. Your bull is still growing, make sure he is still getting energy in his diet before turnout.

2. Make sure your bull has something to run with when you get him home, do not pen him up alone. 3. Semen Check and pour and deworm before turnout.

During Breeding Season

1. Run your bull with a manageable number of head. It is recommended that your bull runs with 1 cow per month of age. 15 months old = 15 cows or heifers. 2. Duration of breeding season should be managed. Running a yearling bull out over 60 days will cause a bull’s body score to go down. It is hard on a yearling bull. 3. Check your bull daily to make sure all appears well and cows don’t seem to be recycling.

After Breeding Season

1. Your Bull needs energy in his diet, the best hay, and should be on a mineral program. 2. Bull needs to be poured and dewormed when you bring him home.

The Dikeman Family! We began using Simmental semen in 1971 and our herd has grown from 4 cows to about 65 breeding age females. Our children, Mark and Becca, showed Simmental heifers in state, regional, and national Jr. Classics; and both were on the KJSA and National AJSA Boards. Michael served two terms on the ASA Board and led efforts to initiate ASA’s Total Herd Enrollment, the Simmental ID system, and the Performance Advocate program. Michael is a part-time fieldman for the American Simmental Association. We primarily work our cattle on foot with the aid of our Border Collie dog, so disposition is very important to us. We were both on the faculty at K-State for over 40 years; therefore, our cattle have to be easy to handle with our limited time to manage them. Our primary goal is to produce bulls for commercial cow-calf producers. We emphasize ‘convenience traits’, total performance, and maternal traits. Our moderate-sized herd of all AI sired, all polled, all black females are moderate framed and functional in the Flint Hills environment. We balance phenotype, actual performance and EPDs. Michael and Earline Dikeman

The Huninghake Family! Huninghake Angus Ranch is located in Northeast Kansas in Marshall County. For our Angus program, we have assembled some of the finest genetics from some of the top breeders to use as the foundation of our operation. These females along with the cows we already had make up the base of our cowherd. Our goal is to breed sound top-quality Angus cattle with balanced genetic traits. We are striving to provide cattle that will work for our customers by raising them in a similar working environment. Our bulls go to the good commercial cattlemen selecting profitable genetics for their operations.

Randy, Melissa, Gemma and Ella Huninghake

Our cattle will make a positive contribution and will improve every sector of the beef cattle industry. These Angus cattle will meet the current and future needs of the beef industry. They have the quality to be used in purebred and commercial operations. This includes raising elite Angus bulls that grow fast and efficiently, be easy to handle, will calve easy, and will produce excellent steers and replacement heifers. We continually place particular emphasis on dispositions, structural correctness, performance and udder quality. We put a strong emphasis on genetic selection and performance data. We strive to produce outstanding cows with extreme longevity. Please feel free to contact or visit. We would enjoy the opportunity to discuss our herd with you. We appreciate the interest of those who are looking into our bulls.
