CRANVIEW GELBVIEH ANGUS

Genetic Progress Genetic Progress &

Welcome,

You are invited to attend our 21st Annual Production Sale on March 22nd. It is because of great repeat buyers and new customers that we can continue to bring this offering to you. We are very humbled to have the opportunity to be your trusted seed stock supplier.

It’s hard to believe this will be our 21st sale. It will consist of mostly Balancer cattle, but we do have a few purebred Gelbvieh and Angus bulls. The females are all yearling heifers and are from the heart of the herd. We are continuing to grow our Angus cow base so you will see very few Angus heifers in the offering. We currently have over 30 Angus cows AI bred and a good group of recip cows carrying Angus calves which should allow us to bring you a significant addition of Angus bulls to our 2026 sale.

It is an extremely good time to be in the cattle business as prices continue to hold at historic levels. Many bulls are sold within a 60 mile radius of home and customers are experiencing sale topping prices with genetics purchased through this sale.

Our goal has always been to give you a product that is industry acceptable and will perform as good or better than the standard in the marketplace. Our goals in raising these bulls and females revolve around your profitability…we strive to produce:

1) A great maternal factory…the Gelbvieh base in our Balancer females is the best maternal female in the industry and we try to maintain them at 1400-1500 lbs.

2) Cattle that will deliver a live calf each year…the #1 contributor to profit.

3) Calves that excel at growth – acceptable birth weights combined with big growth curves.

4) Carcasses that are industry acceptable – our goal is to provide genetics that are improving as fast or faster than the industry average.

Using these goals to drive genetic improvement keeps us focused on our customers and helps us drive a progressive path forward. We continue to use Embryo transplant, AI, and natural service sires to accomplish these goals. We continue to invest in DNA testing for every animal in our sale. This not only confirms the animals parents but validates and improves accuracy of the existing EPDs for each animal.

We try to pay strict attention to all the convenience traits (feet, disposition, udder quality, structural soundness) so these cattle work for you when they arrive at your place. We are extremely proud that our cattle have gone into different environments across the U.S. and Canada, and have performed very effectively.

In the event that something does happen with the animal you purchase, through the first breeding season, they are guaranteed. Again, thank you for your confidence and your continued support of our program. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. We hope to see you at the sale.

Sincerely,

Rob, Bill and Noah Arnold

GENOMIC-ENHANCED EPDs

The major benefits of genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE EPDs) are risk reduction through improved accuracies, value of time to assess breeding stock at a younger age, increased rate of genetic progress, and getting data on economically important traits which are expensive or difficult to measure. Many of the bulls and females selling have GE EPDs and it is denoted to the right of the lot number using these symbols: or

BIRTH WEIGHT IN EMBRYO TRANSPLANT (ET) BULLS SELLING

The bulls selling as a result of ET all have GE EPDs listed in the sale book to increase the accuracy. ET calves do not have ratios for birth and performance weights, as they are raised by a recipient cow that will not give you the true accuracy for birth and performance as will the genetics. The birth weight in ET calves is completely irrelevant and has no indication as to the expected birth weights of their calves. Please use the EPDs for calving ease and birth weight to help with the selection of the bulls in the sale offering.

SALE BOOK EPD EXPLANATIONS

CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

BIRTH WEIGHT (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

WEANING WEIGHT (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

YEARLING WEIGHT (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.

MILK (MILK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

TOTAL MATERNAL (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + 1⁄2 WW EPD.

CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-disposition to calve unassisted as heifers.

NON-PARENT BREED AVERAGE EPDs

YIELD GRADE (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

RIBEYE AREA (CREA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

MARBLING (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

TENDERNESS (TEND): Tenderness scores are is designed to help commercial producers select cattle with the genetic potential for tender meat. In addition to reporting the status of an animal for the Leptin gene, Neogen’s Tenderness/Leptin product also reports the marker status at three major locations (Calpain316, Calpain4751, and CAST) in the bovine genome known to have an impact on meat tenderness. To assist in the interpretation of these results, those three markers are then combined into an overall Tenderness Score, rated on a scale of 1 (Tough) to 10 (Tender). A score of 4, 5 or 6 indicates the eating experience of meat from that animal will be a good one. A score of 7 or higher promises a superior eating experience--as in being able to cut that animal’s meat with a fork!

FEEDER PROFIT INDEX (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.

THE TARGETING THE BRAND™ LOGO

The Certified Angus Beef ® Targeting the Brand™ logo is used to identify any registered Angus bull with a minmum marbling EPD (Marb) of +0.65 and an Angus Grid Value Index ($G) of +55 or higher. Sire-identified carcass data from more than 8,600 records in the American Angus Association database show these minimum thresholds for Marb and $G achieve an average of 50% CAB acceptance. While a sire’s genetic potential only accounts for a portion of marbling performance in a calf crop, these benchmarks provide commercial cattlemen a starting place to identify genetics that will go on to bring performance premiums on quality beef grids.

CRAN GUNNER M92 ET • SELLS AS LOT 1

As I write this note, I’m struggling with offering this calf for sale...I think he would look great in my pasture. He is a serious herdsire candidate just by the muscle mass, the rib, the clean front end and the dimension this bull displays. It’s my opinion, that you won’t find a cleaner-fronted Gunner son offering this much muscle. For Balancer breeders, you will be hard pressed to find a Gelbvieh Balancer bull that ranks in the top 20% for all carcass traits and ranks in the top 20% for WW and YW while being herd average for BW and CE. This bull actually ranks in the top 50% for 11 of the EPDs! If you are a breeder looking to add a little performance into your Balancer females, this calf will do just that. The Z256 cow (13 years old) has been a consistent performer on our place for many years, check out her deep-sided Merit calf she raised this past year (Lot 41). Selling full possession and half semen interest.

From a commercial cattleman’s perspective, I hope you can appreciate the look and the possibility of a set of feeder calves from either of these two brothers...or better yet, buy them both! Donor Dam, Legacy D642 has recorded 31 ET calves for us with a 102 weaning ratio and a 112 yearling ratio on her progeny. Calving ease, performance and carcass is the story on these Whitewater calves. They all have a very eye appealing look with adequate muscle expression. All of these Whitewater Balancer calves are high percentage Angus with a splash of Gelbvieh. If you compare these to the purbred Angus calf, you can see that these Balancers have just a touch more performance than the purebred Angus. Like the rest of these Whitwater calves, this calf ranks in the top 20% for growth. He also ranks in the top 3% for marbling, top 40% for CREA and CW and scored a 6 for tenderness!

A313 is the maternal granddam to Lots 74 and 75 in the heifer pen. Princess W2 is the granddam to Lots 36 and 43 in the bull pen. As you can see, this calf is backed by a great cow family. Four carcass traits in the top 15% of the breed, top 40% for calving ease, top 20% for growth, and top 20% for maternal (CEM, HP, PG30). This calf has a lot to offer. He ranks in the top 2% of the breed for both growth traits and maternal traits. If you plan to keep females, this bull ranks in the top 20% for heifer pregnancy…this is typically not something that is a concern with Gelbvieh-influenced cattle as they tend to mature earlier than other breeds but he also ranks in the top 20% for PG30 which means the predicition of a female to become pregnant at 3 years of age given they calved as a heifer which is a huge economic driver when retaining heifers of any breed. Lazy TV Sam has produced many quality females in the Gelbvieh breed and S493 was an extremely attractive Freedom female that Andrew showed as one of his first heifers in Denver at the NWSS. Putting the daughter (Z251) of S493 together with Sam has provided us an opportunity to create Sam progeny with a much more stylish look. If you want performance and you would like to retain or sell a few of your own replacements, this bull would be a good choice with Lazy TV Sam in the pedigree. I think these Double Wide bulls exhibit the muscle and the mass that most cattlemen look for. And one of the things I like to see as a breeder, the calves are very consistent in their makeup and look. This calf excels at growth and has a very desirable carcass profile (better than 50th percentile on 4 of the 5 traits.)

Lots 31-33 - Very similar kind of bulls. Performance & carcass! Lots 31 and 32 would be considered full brothers with the same pedigrees, but they do have different ET mothers. Look at the 7 tenderness score on Lot 31.

Zula C557 is definitely carrying the torch for the Zula Z133 cow family. Now, take a look at this heifer...she honestly can flat out compete in the pasture and the show ring. She looks like she could be a bull-making machine. Lot 48 and 49 - Thought I might keep these two females close together as they are all closely related with the common denominator being the beautiful Zula C557 cow. G978 and G922 are both flush sisters to the female that we raised and sold to Post Rock Cattle Company in the 2023 Genetic Progress Sale who is building a story of her own as she raised the 2025 National Champion Gelbvieh Heifer. Another excellent Double Wide heifer showing off a combination of performance and femininity. This heifer is in the middle of the road on many of her EPDs so the breeder can really do anything they want in terms of breeding for desirable traits. But, this heifer could probably stand a little show competition if someone wanted to take that on at this stage.

Just like her flush mate in the bull pen, this heifer might be one of the cleaner fronted Gunner calves you will find. This heifer traces all the way back to the great Phoebe G374 that Eagle Pass owned. From that cow came many heifers that went on to influence the breed to include one of the most memorable flushes to ever sell (Farah, Faune and Faye) in the breed that were sold to different breeders…we purchased Tiara T003 out of the National Sale in 2008 for $16,000 (which was probably more than I could afford at the time) but couldn’t pass on the opportunity of a good cow family. We went on to flush her many times and one of the great females that we showed from her was Tiaramasu Y157 ET. And from Y157 came 935C (this heifer’s mom) who also had a very successful show career and garnished a purple ribbon in Denver. The Tiara cow family has definitely lived up to our expectations and this heifer is going to make a new owner extremely happy. She is an extremely quiet female that has 11 of her EPDs in the top 45% of the breed. Performance in the top 10%, CW in the top 3% and scored a 7 for Tenderness!

See my footnotes on Lot 57 as this heifer also comes from the Phoebe cow family. Also, a note on the grand sire (Otto X7), he sired several bulls that topped the ND State Sale in 2016 and 2017. They were big, rugged cowboy kind of bulls that showed off a good square hip on a big solid foot and leg. I used him for one flush and the 745C cow was the only female outcome. This heifer and the Lot 63 heifer have a shot of Confidence Plus for a very attractive industry look. This heifer should make an excellent addition to someone’s Balancer herd.

A higher percentage Gelbvieh heifer bred for performance. She fits the calling for higher performance cattle for the beef industry today.

Whitewater has earned his stripes and will see a lot more cows at our place. Hard to beat the total package of phenotype and genotype. Top 15% for CE and YW and top 20% for WW plus carcass EPDs suggest top 5% for marbling, top 10% for CW and top 20% for CREA. For the maternal part of the business, she is in the top 15% for Docility, top 20% for stayability, and top 40% for PG30. Looks like a good place to either start or improve a Balancer herd.

Black Border Agent daughter that appears to offer a lot of performance. Her EPD and genetic package allows the owner a lot of

for either a purebred or Balancer outcome.

Very maternal kind of female. Her dam (G975) is a direct daughter of Zula Z133 out of the Lazy TV Sam bull known for his females. I commented to Chris while we were taking videos, a person can look at these Double Wide females and see the broodiness they offer and their natural ability to infuse performance into their offspring. Tenderness scored a 5 for a high percentage female!

VAR WHITEWATER 2161 • SIRE OF LOTS 75, 78-79

Lots 78-79 - The two Angus heifers sired by the VAR Whitewater bull have an excellent set of EPDs. These heifers have the typical feminine look of the Angus cow with a very clean look up through the front end. A lot of breeding opportunities with these two heifers as they offer a very desirable set of EPDs to work with. In my opinion, the Whitewater calves are phenomenal.
