On the Cover: “A Great Lineup”

Rodeos, snow cones, 4H exhibits, dances, and carnival rides are all part of everyone’s summertime fun. Fair season has been well upon us and with every sunset it is closer to finishing up for the 2023 year. If all the fun of the fair could be bottled up and saved to use during those cold winter months, many of us would be in a better mood. The excitement, anxiousness, and commitment to projects for the fair is second to none and I know it is one of my favorite childhood events. As the Nebraska Angus Association gears up for our busiest time of the year including the Nebraska State Fair, we encourage you all to go out and support all our youth and exhibitors and commend them on a job well done because the countless hours of their hard work will shape our future in the agriculture industry.

This year the Nebraska State Fair will run from August 25th-September 4th. The open cattle show is set for August 30th starting at 9 AM in the Pinnacle Bank Arena. Angus will follow red Angus in the south ring. This show showcases great Nebraska Angus genetics and for those breeding in Nebraska the Nebraska Angus Association provides an opportunity to give back to those breeders with the Nebraska Bred and Owned class. Each year the Nebraska Angus Association awards $250 to the top Nebraska bred and owned bull and female. Entry deadline is August 10th.

Following the Nebraska State Fair will be Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island once again. The Association will be found under the white tent at the north west corner of the grounds. Husker Harvest Days is a great opportunity for breeders to showcase their cattle and meet new people. Thousands of people walk through the Angus tent each year and while many may not know very much about cattle this event provides a huge amount of education to everyone. As our world keeps heading more and more towards an anti-agriculture mindset it is even more important that we show up and provide the correct information to the consumers. This event makes a big impact on our younger generations. Every year it is evident that little kids love coming and seeing the animals. It is our duty to make sure they learn the truth of where their beef comes from.

Immediately following Husker Harvest Days, the Nebraska Angus Association will be jumping right into their annual Nebraska Angus Tour, September 15th and 16th! We hope you are ready for the fantastic lineup we have for you this year. It may not be one of the largest tours we have had, but the productional quality of cattle and the added opportunities to hear from other sectors of the beef industry are great! This year the headquarters is Kearney with the base hotel being the Holiday Inn. Transportation will be provided to those who request it and registrations are due by September 1st! Registration is $50/person, which provides transportation if needed, all meals, and gets you entered into the door prize drawings. To kick off the tour there will be an evening session on the 15th with a social, a Certified Angus Beef dinner, and a special presentation at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney. The following day will be a day full of cattle displays and ranch tours, a feedlot tour, demonstrations, and great food! If you have questions about this upcoming event, please reach out to the Nebraska Angus Association office for more details.

For me, this summer has been one of the fastest ones yet, but I am told it only gets worse! I sure hope that is not the case, but if so, I will figure out a way to cherish every moment of it. I hope everyone can take the opportunity to get out and enjoy the last days of summer and always remember to make memories with those you love!

President Speaks

Hello Fellow Angus Breeders,

As I write to you, it’s mid-July and it feels like April with the rain showers we are getting. If the good Lord holds off on the hail, crops in our area should yield well and bring down commodity prices. Some of the larger weeks on the video auctions have concluded and I hope the $3.00/cwt 600 lbs. steers look cheap by the time you read this which is realistic. You and your customers are in the driver seat for the next couple of years so I encourage you to make hay because the sun is shining.

I also just returned from Calgary, Alberta, Canada where I attended the Beef Improvement Federation Annual Symposium. It’s my favorite conference annually with the mixture of cientists, academics, breed representatives and producers from around the world in one room trying to make better beef. There’s a good summary on the The Angus Conversation podcast and you can access presentations online at beefimprovement.org, but since it’s fresh on my mind I’ll give my two cents.

Greenhouse gas emissions are big on the minds of the Canadian government, and we need to tell our story about cattle’s role in the carbon cycle. The best place we can put selection pressure to improve emissions is on reproduction: decreasing opens would make an exponentially bigger impact on emissions than selection for lower methane producing cows. Artificial intelligence is finding its way into agriculture. Could we use it for management or to collect better phenotypes? I’m not sure in the short

term but it needs to be on the radar. Late term feedlot death was a topic of discussion and is becoming an increasingly prevalent issue in feedlots no matter their altitude. Simplot data points to higher percentage Angus cattle having a higher rate of death loss so it probably needs to be a priority in our selection decisions long term. It is correlated to the PAP EPD at AAA so we have some tools to use that will only get better with time. I encourage you to listen to that entire breakout session. Dr. Tim Holt is a fun guy to listen to.

As we get into the fall season, it’s an exciting time for seedstock breeders. There are some great female sales in the state of Nebraska coming up this fall. If you had to downsize in the drought, there’ll be some great opportunities to increase your cow numbers soon. I hope to see you around at those sales and at the great Nebraska Angus tour coming in September. Look for details in this issue.

Until then, may your grass continue to grow tall, your cows all get pregnant and your weaning weights set new records.

Kind regards,

Sincerely, Joe Epperly

Our Angus Family Obituary

Tim” Harlan ralpH

STiefel, 84, of Denton, Nebraska, passed away Monday, June 12,2023, at Home.

“Tim” Harlan, son of Ralph Frederick and Lydia Katherine (Epke) Stiefel, was born on July 19, 1938, in a birthing home in Cherry County, Nebraska. He was baptized on March 21, 1943, at the United Methodist Church, Crookston, Nebraska. Family and friends knew Tim by his nickname given to him when at birth he was so small that he fit in a shoe box. That is when he received the nickname “Tiny Tim”.

The family lived in Littleburg, South Dakota when Tim was born. In the Spring of 1939, they moved to an Epke family rural home eight miles north of Crookston, South Dakota. In the Summer of 1939, they moved to where Tim called home three miles north of Crookston.

Tim attended grade school at the rural Rock School House, District #48, north of Crookston, NE and seventh and eighth grade in Alliance, NE. Tim attended Valentine High School, graduating in 1956. He then went to the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. Tim would drive home from Lincoln to the family ranch north of Crookston every weekend to help with the livestock and other ranch chores.

He was drafted in January 1962 by the United States Army. He did boot camp and was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Tim was honorably discharged on December 8th, 1963.

Tim was united in marriage to Judith Thayne Tucker at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Lincoln, NE on Sunday, June 11, 1961. Tim and Judy lived on the former Joe Hronek place in South Dakota, then purchased the Ted Epke ranch north of Crookston, South Dakota in 1971 and in the early 1980’s lived south of Bassett, NE. They moved to their current location in Denton, NE in 1990.

Registered Angus Cattle was a big part of Tim’s life. He spent his winters

calving out cows and fitting the cattle for shows and sales. Tim and his wife put on the Bull sales in the spring in Burwell for many years.

He was on the Board of Directors for many small Angus association sales. He was on the Board of Directors for the Nebraska Angus Association where he also served as President from 1973-1974. Tim was a past member of the UNL Block and Bridle Club. Tim was instrumental in securing a seat on the American Angus board for the State of Nebraska which is still held today.

Also, a big part of Tim’s life was the raising and showing of Percheron Draft horses. He and Judy had raised and owned the Reserve World Champion Mare.

Tim was very active in the dirt moving business for 35 years and in land conservation, building earthen dams, leveling land for irrigation, building terraces and waterways. Tim and Judy and friend Lucille Johnson donated 13 acres of land for a trail head in the lower Platte South. Tim would be described as a Great Steward of the Land.

Tim refurbished the IHC Farmall H that his father Ralph purchased in 1941 and participated in the RFD TV World’s Largest Parade of Classic Tractors on August 25, 2012, at the Fonner Park racetrack in Grand Island to help set a new Guinness World Record with 964 classic tractors in a parade.

Tim enjoyed Husker football; he started attending games when he was in college and continued for as long as he was able to go.

Tim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Judy of Denton; brother and sister-in-law Richard “Dick” (Ruth) Stiefel of Crookston; brother-inlaw Gary Vienna of Berthoud, CO. and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Donna Jean Vienna. Memorials may be made to the Masonic & Eastern Star Home for Children, PO Box 1327, Fremont, NE 68026, www.meshc.org.

NE Auxilary President Speaks

Greetings Angus Family,

Nebraska

Rain, rain! Wow! We haven’t had grass like this in some of our pastures in years! We are very thankful for His blessings and hope all of you are catching rain when you need it!

Summer is just flying by with cattle shows, fairs, haying and now we are thinking of back-to-school preparations!

We were able to have a meeting in June in York at McLean Beef-a family owned and operated meat market and processing facility. Their 24/7 vending machine was just simply amazing! We were able to see all the steps it takes from processing, shipping and retail. They certainly have a passion for their business and are very family-oriented building a legacy to be shared for generations to come! A visit well worth the drive!

There were several of us that attended the National Junior Angus Show in Grand Island the first week in July. We had the opportunity to attend the American Angus Auxiliary meeting and enjoyed visiting with members from other states. We also enjoyed watching the Nebraska juniors have a very successful week showing and participating in contests. It is always exciting to see this great group of kids growing up and excelling in every aspect of this organization! Congratulations to everyone on a job well done!

Throughout the week the juniors were served several meals with the Ne Auxiliary sponsoring pizza for the members and families. Also, a big congratulations to all the juniors receiving scholarships on the state and national levels!

I want to also give a big shout out to our state queen, Kacey Dethlefs and princess, Brianna Brown on an awesome representation of the Nebraska Angus Association so far this year! You both have traveled the miles and have shown your commitment and passion for the breed to others. From bull sales across the state to assisting Miss American Angus in the ring, you have represented our state well! This fall you will see them at many activities so please stop and visit with them. Keep up the great job ladies!

As summer comes to an end, we have a very busy fall participating at State Fair, Husker Harvest Days, and state tour. We hope you mark your calendars for these events as we can’t wait to visit with you about the Nebraska Angus Auxiliary! Our next meeting is scheduled for September with a fall workshop-so stay tuned for details!

Junior Viewpoint

Greetings, Angus Friends!

Hi, I’m Addison Cotton, from York and I am honored to be your NeJAA President. I recently graduated from York High School and am attending Northeast Community College this fall. I plan to study nursing and animal science. I’ve been involved with NeJAA for nine years. Through my involvement in the National & Nebraska’s Junior Angus Association I’ve grown to love Angus cattle. This involvement has allowed me to become a well-rounded individual with increased self-confidence. I am very proud and excited to continue giving back to the organization that has given so much to me.

With the summer show season coming to an end, Nebraska Juniors’ hard work is paying off. We kicked off our summer events with the State Show which took place in Broken Bow the first weekend in June. The junior meeting was held Saturday and the new 2023--2024 Nebraska Junior officers were elected. The new officers are as follows: President - Addison Cotton, 1st Vice President - Kasey Meyer, 2nd Vice President - Tavin Uden, Secretary/Treasurer - Kacey Dethlefs, Communications Directors - Tucker Stagemeyer and JessaLynn Hudson, and Membership Directors - Jake O’Dea & Payton Scott. Following the meeting, juniors took the quiz bowl test and a team fitting contest to create teams for the National Junior Angus Show. That evening a picnic style banquet was enjoyed by members and their families. Sunday’s show began with the National Showmanship Contest. Congrats to Kyra Meyer & Kacey Dethlefs for representing Nebraska at the NJAS Showmanship Contest. Congrats to Kasey Meyer for winning the Supreme Overall Breeding animal, Tucker Stagemeyer, Best Pair of Females and to Daniel Young, the Premier Exhibitor. NeJAA would like to thank Avery Mather, National Junior Angus Board member, for assisting with our show and contest. Her advice, expertise and especially her enthusiasm was much appreciated. Overall, it was a great weekend with an awesome set of Angus cattle where fun was had and memories were made by all.

The National Junior Angus Show was held July 1-8 in Grand Island. To me, this is the best week of summer! Sixty Nebraska juniors entered 128 head. Although NJAS was held in our home state, Nebraska was not the host. However, Nebraska stepped up to the plate when asked by the National Junior Angus Board to volunteer to help in many areas. Nebraska has lots to be proud of. Show & Contest award winners are listed on page 13.

Juniors participated in many activities throughout the week including mentoring, socials, tailgate, basketball, corn hole, dodgeball and a family fun night of bouncy houses. Several state meals were provided to the Nebraska Juniors, as well. Thank you to the meal sponsors: Nebraska Angus Assc., Nebraska Angus Auxiliary, and Boehringer Ingelheim - Dan Wolfe, and American Angus Assc. NeJAA served cake to celebrate our 65th anniversary. Nebraska served 800 runzas at the tailgate - thank you to Runza for donating half of the runzas. Out-of-staters enjoyed Nebraska’s very own unique Runza sandwich. Overall, we had a fabulous week of friends, family and fun! We all enjoyed spending time with our Angus family!

Next on the calendar will be the Nebraska State Fair, I hope to see you there! We have decided to not hold a NeJAA meeting at the state fair, so please watch our junior Facebook page @Nebraska Junior Angus Association for updates on the Winter Show and information on upcoming events. Please contact me if you are interested in being on a winter show committee.

Hope to see you soon.

Yours truly, Addison Cotton

bulls and heifers at the state shows including the Nebraska Classic and the Nebraska State Fair.

Today, Schulte Angus Ranch continues to evolve by incorporating Angus sires and new technology such as genetic testing, ultrasounds, and embryo transfers. Numbering north of 120 head, Schulte Angus Ranch continues to be involved showing Angus cattle in local, state, and national shows as well as offering bulls and heifers every year for sale at private treaty while consigning bulls and pens of heifers to the Classic.

Gayle Gardels who started raising Angus cattle in 1960. His three sons Mike, Kirk, and Brad joined him when they were old enough. Mike Gardels then took on the management of cows around 1980. Mike passed away in 2020 and now Matt manages the herd. With our breeding program we try to focus on the maternal side first. We do not buy any cattle as we retain our own heifers. We AI using about eight different sires that fit each cow. We raise our own herd bulls and have a pretty heavy influence of SAV Final Answer and Connealy Final Product. Our current methods of marketing are we have a bull and female sale every third Saturday in March and we also sell some private treaty bred cows in the fall.

in Iowa before settling where the farm is located today, between Kearney and Pleasanton. Beginning with a commercial herd consisting of Angus and Hereford genetics, the Schultes have continued to raise cattle continuously for over 100 years.

After returning to the farm in 1997 after spending time at NCTA in Curtis Nebraska, Jeremy and wife Stacy began to AI the commercial herd with Angus bulls. This resulted in a noticeable increase in the quality of the cattle. Subsequently, Jeremy invested in what would be the first of many purebred Angus heifers which began the process of flipping the herd from commercial to purebred.

The evolution of Schulte Angus ranch continued with show cattle. Jeremy and Stacy’s two sons, Mathias and Braden, learned how to work, feed, and show cattle beginning with Angus steers and heifers at the Buffalo County Fair. After a few years of showing at the local fair level they began progressing to showing Angus

efficiencies and public exposure and involvement. Recognizing this led to implementing the idea of hosting a production sale held annually, the 2nd Saturday of December, in which bred heifers that have undergone development and management within KEY Cattle Development are offered for sale alongside coming 2-year-old bulls from KEY Ranch.

Kaleb & Erin met in March of 2013, dated until their marriage in December of 2016. They went into business together in January of 2017. You can learn more about them and their story by going to their websites: www.key-ranch.com

operated by Kaleb & Erin Kuck. Operating from the same location Kaleb & Erin also offer the service of heifer development primarily handling and breeding spring bred females, allowing for the ability to wean and background calves for customers through the fall and winter months. This side of their business operates under the name KEY Cattle Development. A smaller scale row crop farming entity is also in the mix for the Kuck’s.

A great deal of the story of Kaleb & Erin and their chance meeting in life and their adventurous experiences since meeting one another is due or in credit to the beef industry. Like all of us and the unique stories we all have as individuals and or married couples Kaleb & Erin can definitely see GOD’s hand at work in bringing them together for his purpose and the decades of life events and experiences each were separately having prior to meeting, that were prepping them to take on their current dreams and responsibilities.

In many ways the heifer development business and KEY Ranch compliment one another in terms of equipment and facility

BarTelS anGuS passion for agriculture

We welcome you to Bartels Angus! Our owners Mike and Jill Bartels and their children Ryan, Logan, Ella, and Macy and Craig and Brianna and their children Blakely, Bo, and Brooks and family Dave and Nancy Bartels are excited for you to be here. The Bartels family operation is located five miles north of Riverton, Nebraska, and we have been in business for 15 years. The registered herd is just one part of the larger operation of Bartels Family Farms. Along with cattle we raise irrigated corn and s oybeans, wheat, alfalfa, and other hay crops. The cattle enterprise consists of a spring and fall calving herd, both of which are a mix of commercial and registered females. We also have a small feedlot where we finish our steers, along with a few customer calves and we breed several hundred heifers every year and sell them as breds in the fall.

The history of Bartels Angus comes from mainly farming and commercial cattle roots as Mike and Craig's parents and grandparents were predominantly farmers with commercial herds. The first registered Angus female on the place was Meyer Angus Barbara 1F16. She was a daughter of Twin Valley Precision E161 that was purchased by Mike in 2002 to show at the county fair and use as the beginning of an FFA Project. We joke that she was so consistent that she never had a heifer calf so the herd stayed at one while Mike was in high school and most of college. The seedstock program took a leap in the fall of 2007 with the purchase of 20 angus bred heifers from McKellar Angus in Texas. An accelerated growth in numbers has taken place over the last ten years due to an aggressive AI and ET program. We currently implant around 300 embryos per year and AI another 400. The first of our bull sales consisted of ads on KRVN and private treaty sales out of our parent’s backyard. The first auction was held in the spring of 2014 and consisted of 20 bulls.

Our cow herd currently consists of mainly Connealy bred cow families that we have developed including the Elmays, Joy Erins, Cappas, Elsa Pluses, Ceylas and Brinas. We have also added several cow families from Knoll Crest Farms in Virginia including the Patricias, Pleasants, and Black Crees. As we have developed

Our main goal is to meet as many people as we can, who share a passion for this business and lifestyle and help the next generation get a foot in the door to get a cowherd started. Long term we hope to produce a sustainable business that hopefully will allow one or several of our kids to come back and enjoy the operation. We want to improve the land, livestock, and people. these cow families, we have started to use more in-house bulls including Bartels Easy, Bartels Navigator, Bartels Resilient 145, Bartels Arsenal 602, and Bartels Gunner 845. AI sires of this year's calf crop include Casino Constable, Connealy Thunder, Bruns Blaster, 21AR Rainmaker, and Sitz Barricade.

Currently, we have a mid-March bull sale every year where we market 80-100 bulls. We also sell approximately 50 private treaty bulls every year. It is our goal to always have quality bulls available. With the diversity of calving seasons in our area, we must be able to provide a quality product year-round. We sell females private treaty in the fall. Most of these would consist of commercial bred heifers.

Tc rancH committed to angus

TC Ranch, owned by Dru Uden is situated in south central Nebraska’s Republican River Valley two miles east and one quarter south of Franklin. The TC herd was started in 1950 by Dru’s grandfather T.L. Sterner and became the TC Ranch we know today when Dru’s father Vance took the reins in 1972. Today they run 250 fall and spring calving cows. The river valley provides native grass in summer and the herd is fed high roughage in the winter. The annual TC sale offers 100 bulls for registered and commercial cattlemen. Come by the ranch any time to see the herd and talk Angus.

Dear Nebraska Angus Association, Thank you so much for the scholarship. I greatly appreciate your support towards the youth in our association. I plan to further my education within the agricultural field.

Dear Nebraska Angus Association

Leadership and Members,

Thank you! Those two words just don’t seem to cover how truly grateful we are for your generous financial support in Clint’s ongoing cancer fight. The fund definitely helped us get back on our feet after our exhausting travels in December.

We are humbled by your generosity and all the prayers, calls, and messages have helped keep our spirits up during these last few months. We try to make each day as normal as possible.

Thank you again! Our Angus family is indeed one of the best in the world!

Sincerely,

Dear Nebraska Angus Association, Thank you for awarding me the Nebraska Angus Association scholarship. I deeply appreciate the association's dedication to youth and their assistance in shaping the future of Nebraska Angus breeders. Your financial help allows me to pursue my dreams and someday give back to members when I am older. Your investment is truly an investment in the future of the breed.

Thank you,

Nebraska Angus Scholarship Winners

1st - Tucker Stagemeyer Page, NE

2nd - Addison Cotton York, NE

The Angus breed and association involvement is nothing new to our family. My grandfather was one of the founding officers of the Nebraska Junior Angus Association in 1958. I am proud to say that 65 years later, I have served as the Membership Director, Communications Director, 2nd Vice President, and Vice President during my time in the association. My first junior national was in Indianapolis in 2014, and we haven’t missed one to date. At these shows I have established many connections across the country and most importantly, exhibited Angus heifers. Some of my fondest memories of junior nationals are the successes I have had in contests, having been a 2x Black Kettle Cook-off Winner, Career Development Champion, Quiz Bowl Champion, and Team Sales Champion among other honors. The successes that my older brothers and I have had would not be possible without the support of both the NeJAA and the NJAA.

My name is Addison Cotton and I am from York, NE. I have been a member of NeJAA for nine years. I have been accepted to Northeast Community College in Norfolk and plan to major in Nursing and Animal Science. My nursing journey will begin at Northeast where I will first earn my Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). This will allow me to work as a Registered Nurse as I continue my studies to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. My true empathy for others is fueling this degree choice. I also hope to pursue an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in animal science at Northeast as I desire to continue growing my Angus herd in the future and want to learn progressive, improved practices to benefit my production. It may seem odd that I desire to be a registered nurse that raises cattle, but I am excited to grow my passions into a successful future where I can work hard at what I love.

My name is Kasey Meyer and I am from Blue Hill, Nebraska where I live and help out on my family’s daily cow/calf operation. The angus industry has been a passion of mine since before I was able to show. Watching my older sister and other older juniors at the time showing cattle really sparked my interest and passion for this lifestyle. This industry is something I will continue to be involved in within my lifetime.

I plan to attend Central Community College in Hastings, Nebraska where I will major in Agribusiness. Along with that I plan to get certificates in multimedia where I will be able to learn marketing and design techniques. Once finished with college I hope to come back and run the family cow/calf operation. Along with that I hope to add more of an emphasis on the show cattle side. Traveling to shows across the country within my junior career is something that has shaped me into the person I am today while not only showing cattle but meeting others from far away who share the same passion.

Having such a supportive family has grown my passion for this breed while also teaching me many lessons along the way. I look forward to being a mentor to those juniors just starting their journey within the angus industry, and I hope to help them find their angus family.

Angus breeders engage in premiere education at Beef Leaders Institute (BLI)

Young Angus enthusiasts gather for a week of producer education and development.

Twenty-one American Angus Association® members from across the globe attended the 2023 Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) June 13-17. The annual event is hosted by the American Angus Association and funded by the Angus Foundation and Certified Angus Beef® brand (CAB®). BLI provides Association members the opportunity to experience the beef value chain from pasture to plate.

“It’s truly a privilege to welcome a new Beef Leaders Institute class each year,” said Mark McCully, Association

CEO. “This unique experience fosters growth for attendees and provides an opportunity to connect with their fellow breeders.”

Participants began the week at the American Angus Association in Saint Joseph, Missouri. While at the breed’s headquarters, attendees met with staff to learn about the many departments and programs housed within the

Association. Several Association employees offered insights, including Mark McCully; Kelli Retallick-Riley, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) president; and Clay Zwilling, Angus MediaSM president.

Attendees then hit the road, departing from Saint Joseph to further explore the production and processing sectors of the beef industry. They

toured Tyson Fresh Meats in Dakota City, Nebraska, and Weborg

Feedyards in Pender, Nebraska.

For the next leg of the trip, attendees traveled to Ohio to continue studying the beef value chain. While visiting Buckhead Toledo, Northwood, Ohio, participants experienced the preparation of value-added CAB® products. They explored the impact of genetics in the beef industry at STgenetics, Tiffin, Ohio.

The final days of the experience were spent in The Culinary Center at the CAB® brand’s headquarters in Wooster, Ohio. From a “Taste the Difference,” steak tasting to a hands-on beef fabrication demonstration in the meat lab, participants explored the specifications behind putting a CAB® steak on the dinner table. Their newly gained knowledge was even put to the test as they prepared their own steaks with the assistance of world-class chef, Venoy Roggers, III.

During a week fully immersing themselves in the industry, the BLI class realized how the cattle they raise influence the industry well beyond their pastures.

“We’re always selling bulls and you see the commercial people, but you don’t really see what happens to the beef after it leaves,” said Trevor Hinkle, an attendee from Nevada, Missouri. “It’s just a really interesting process to see what happens after it gets to the packer, leaves the packer, and how there’s value made along the whole chain, and how many people are really working to do that. It’s a really eye-opening experience.”

Hinkle said he’s eager to take what he learned home and share it with his operation’s customers. He expressed his gratitude for the knowledge, perspective and new friendships gained throughout the week.

“We are proud to support educational opportunities like Beef Leaders Institute for our members,”

said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “Providing experiences that prepare our breeders for success is a vital part of the Angus Foundation’s mission to ensure a bright future for the breed.”

Providing continued education for the Angus membership is a priority for the Association. BLI is designed to

equip members ages 25 to 45 with the resources to understand all segments of the beef industry. Attendees leave as stronger, more effective leaders for the Angus breed and beef industry. To learn more about BLI, visit www.angus.org/Event/BLIEntryForm. The 2024 application will be available in early November.

NEBRASKA ANGUS ASSOCIATION HEIFER RAFFLE SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

The Nebraska Angus Association offers this scholarship to youth involved with the Angus breed through the contribution of a heifer donated by a current Nebraska Angus Association member. The drawing for the heifer takes place at the annual Nebraska Angus Tour. Raffle tickets are sold with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund. This program was started by George Marcy of Marcy Livestock. He wanted to work with the Nebraska Angus Association to start a program to pay it forward to our younger cattle producers. When he was young he had received a heifer from a raffle like this that helped him start his own herd. That is our hope with this program to help pay it forward to our younger generation.

Heifer Donor for 2023: TC Ranch, Franklin, Nebraska

• Scholarship will be awarded during the Nebraska Angus Association Banquet held December 2nd in Kearney, Nebraska. Banquet starts at 6:00 PM (CT)

• Send applications by October 15, 2023 to Margo Lehn at the Nebraska Angus Association office by emailing to info@nebraskaangus.org or mailing to PO Box 245, Long Pine, NE 69217 (If sending by email please call and confirm that it is received)

Requirements:

• You or your family is a current member of the Nebraska Angus Association

• Resident of Nebraska

• A graduating high school senior or current undergraduate/graduate student

Applications can be found at WWW.NEBRASKAANGUS.ORG or contact Margo Lehn • Secretary/Manager • 402-760-0386 • info@nebraskaangus.org

Connealy attends 2023 Young Cattlemen’s Conference

Gabriel Connealy, Whitman, Neb., represents the Angus breed at the NCBA’s Young Cattlemen’s Conference.

Gabriel Connealy of Whitman, Nebraska, represented the Angus breed at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s (NCBA) 2023 Young Cattlemen’s Conference (YCC), June 1-9. Each year, the Angus Foundation selects and sponsors an individual to attend the conference. Originally selected in 2020, Connealy’s trip was postponed several years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The group of over 70 cattlemen from across the nation convened in Denver, starting the conference at the NCBA office and concluding the trip in Washington, D.C., with a visit to Capitol Hill. Throughout their travels, attendees explored the beef value chain from pasture to plate, including stops at Five Rivers Cattle Feeding, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, Tyson Foods beef plant, Certified Angus Beef and Wendy’s Global Headquarters. Connealy said he enjoyed the variety of stops, from gaining an eye-opening new perspective at Wendy’s to visits he was more familiar with.

“Visiting Certified Angus Beef (CAB) is a highlight of any trip, and it was great to see the reactions of other participants who were unfamiliar with CAB,” Connealy said.

YCC is designed to broaden experiences for the cattlemen that attend. “Personally, I had little experience or knowledge of the policymaking or lobbying portion of our industry — the D.C. aspect of the trip was especially beneficial.”

Connealy is well versed in both involvement and history within the Angus breed. Growing up in Nebraska on his family’s Angus seedstock operation, Connealy Angus, he developed a passion for the industry and desire to assist the family business. This led him to obtain his bachelor’s

degree in finance and later his master’s degree, with an emphasis in animal breeding and genetics, from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). In addition to managing the family herd of 3,000 registered Angus cows, Connealy is a member of NCBA, has served as an Angus Convention voting delegate and played an integral role in the startup of his local Grant County Nebraska Farm Bureau chapter. His hunger for knowledge and dedication to the industry made YCC the ideal

learning opportunity. Connealy emphasized the uniqueness of this experience, which allowed him to connect with and learn from fellow cattlemen from a variety of backgrounds.

“Truly, the highlight of the trip was the other participants from around the nation,” Connealy said. “I was exposed to aspects of our industry that I knew little about, and made many friends that I hope to keep in touch with and trade lessons with for years to come.”

The Angus Foundation selects a young cattleman to represent the breed at the conference annually through an application process. Emphasis is placed on applicants’ leadership experiences and American Angus Association® and beef industry involvement. The attendee’s trip is fully underwritten through the Angus Fund, which provides unrestricted support for the Foundation’s mission to advance Angus education, youth and research.

“I’m honored and humbled to be able to represent the Angus breed and Angus Foundation at YCC,” Connealy said. “I’d like to give a sincere thank you to the Association and the Foundation for the opportunity. There are many great young people in our breed, and I would encourage each and

every one of them to apply for YCC.”

“We are fortunate to have had someone with as much passion and dedication as Gabriel representing the Angus breed at YCC,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “We’re very proud to provide this support as he expands his industry knowledge and leadership, and we’re thankful for the generous donors that allow us to do so.”

Applications to represent the Angus breed at the 2024 YCC will be due in January of the upcoming year. To learn more about this opportunity and the work of the Angus Foundation, visit www.AngusFoundation.org.
