American Angus Association names Esther McCabe Director of Performance Programs With a passion for data, genetics and Angus cattle – Kansas State grad proves to be a natural fit to join Team Angus.
in each issue for junior members. Subscriptions to the KAN are free or you can read it online at www.kansasangus.com.
The annual Kansas Angus Directory is a great reference material. The 100-page booklet features a complete listing of current KAA members along with contact and herd information. Advertisements from many Kansas Angus breeders and industry partners highlight the states programs, seedstock and genetics. To receive a free copy of the 2021 Directory email “Esther has a passion for the success of kansasangus@wbsnest.org or access a digital our members and understands the realworld challenges of getting data collected,” version on our website. The American Angus Association® recently named Esther McCabe, Ph.D., director of performance programs. McCabe’s passion for teaching, cattle and genetic improvement aligns perfectly with the duties that come along with this job.
said Mark McCully, American Angus Association CEO. “I know Esther will have an impact on advancing our genetic selection tools by focusing on our performance programs and working directly with Angus breeders.” McCabe is a third-generation Angus producer originally from Elk City, Kansas. She has had strong ties to the Angus breed for her entire life. She credits programs, such as the Kansas and National Junior Angus Association, for shaping and developing her leadership skills. McCabe recently earned her doctorate from Kansas State University where her research focused on beef cattle data analytics. “The Angus breed has the industry’s largest beef cattle performance database because of members’ dedication to breed improvement with each generation,” said McCabe. “I am fortunate to be joining a team focused on serving its membership. I look forward to continuing to provide programs, tools and education to support members with record reporting.” McCabe’s previous experience with Zoetis and Osborn Barr Paramore, coupled with her beef cattle and data analytics research, will allow McCabe to serve as an excellent resource for Angus members. The President's Pen Friends and fellow Angus breeders. As the newly elected President of the KAA, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Clint Woodrow, I am the General Manager of Badger Creek Cattle Company, in Emporia. Together with my wife Jessica and two sons Austin (14) and Cooper (11) we operate about 700 mature cows here at the ranch in Emporia along with a sister ranch in Rosiclare IL, consisting of Angus and Simmental females. I have grown up in the cattle business, starting as a member of and lifelong supporter of 4-H and the American Junior Simmental Association. In 1999 I had the opportunity to join Hudson Pines Farm in Tarrytown NY, still with the focus on Simmental, but also started to look at the Angus cattle to produce a relatively new option, Sim-Angus cattle. In 2007, I was offered an opportunity to move our family back to the Midwest, where Jessica and I had grown up, and manage Eby Ranch. Once we got settled here in KS, it was clear that Angus cattle needed to be the main focus for us going forward, and we haven’t looked back. Eby Ranch was purchased and became Badger Creek Cattle in 2015, our focus remains on Angus and Sim-Angus cattle. I am excited to serve as the 2021 KAA president and as a junior advisor the KJAA and look forward to meeting new friends and visiting with old ones. We have certainly had some challenges in the previous year, but I feel confident that 2021 will be better as we move forward. It is an honor to be able to serve the Kansas Angus Association. Should member have questions or concerns do not hesitate to reach out. My phone number is 620-794-7601 and my email clint@badgercreekcattle.com. Sincerely, Clint Woodrow 2021 Kansas Angus Association President clint@badgercreekcattle.com Looking toward Sale Day Between late night calving checks and winter chores is the day some might call the most important single day of the year— sale day. For the seller sale day is pay day, the day that you can showcase your countless hours spent on mating decisions, selection, studying production records, writing footnotes and marketing along with everyday chores that lead up to the day when customers show up at your ranch to purchase seed stock. Sale day is day to celebrate the confidence customers show in your program. For the buyer, it is a chance to add valuable genetics to your herd as well as an opportunity to visit with fellow producers. There are many “sale days” across the state of Kansas within the next 3 months. The calendar on page 9 lists over 40 sales being hosted by KAA members and the pages of this KAN are filled with advertisements touting a variety of genetics that are sure to fit the goals of registered and commercial producers. The next issue will also feature more sale ads. In addition to the dates on the calendar, many KAA members offer bulls and females for sale private treaty throughout the spring. Those looking for herd bulls and replacement females need not look further than the progressive, reputable Angus seedstock producers in Kansas. Whether you are selling or buying sale day is a day to look toward, Anne Lampe, Kansas Angus Association Manager Kansas Angus News Editor , Kanasangus@wbsnet.org Page 1. Kansas Junior Angus Association The Kansas Angus Futurity was the first Angus show I ever attended as an exhibitor. I was six years old at the time, and for the first time, my parents were allowing me to miss school for an event. Little did I know, years later, I would miss a lot of school for livestock shows and events.
2021
The first Angus show heifer I showed was R&L Blackcap 524 born May 2, 2005. She was affectionately known as Miss B. I was not sure what to expect, but I worked with Miss B every day when I got home from school. As we walked into the showring, I was excited to show my heifer for the very first time and was confident I would do a good job. However, I made it five steps into the ring before I tripped and fell to the ground.
•
Most young heifers at their first show would have spooked or jumped back. Instead, Miss B nudged me with her head as if to say, “Get up, please. We have a show to do.” We went on to win my class. My parents are huge proponents of competing in showmanship, and I was selected as the Reserve Champion Pee Wee Showman. I was given a metal cutout of a calf being shown, and I still use it to hang coats on today. The Kansas Angus Futurity holds a lot of fond memories for me as I continued to show Angus cattle for the last 15 years. I encourage all Kansas Junior Angus members no matter if it is your first show or your last show, when you fall, simply pick yourself back up, and keep going. Best Wishes,

Our Angus Family Kevin Lee Hunt, peacefully passed away Wednesday, January 6th, 2021 at St Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born February 23, 1959 in Wellington, Kansas, to his parents Thaine and Carol Hunt. Kevin was a lifelong resident of Sumner County. As a young man, Kevin spent his elementary years attending Rome School in Rome, Kansas. Then in 1977 he graduated from South Haven High School. While in high school he loved being involved in 4-H and was a FFA Chapter President and won the Chapter Star Farmer award. Playing sports with his friends was an important part of his life. He enjoyed going to cattle shows both in 4-H and FFA where he brought home many championship trophies. Kevin began his lifelong dream of farming and raising cattle while he completed his degree in Farm Business Management at Cowley County Community College in 1979. Kevin was a farmer and cattleman at heart. His full time farming and cattleman career began early in life, at the family farm near Drury Kansas. He spent many hours working and relaxing outside, loving nature and caring for his cows, while preparing for cattle sales and shows. Kevin has always enjoyed long conversations about his family and his Angus cattle. During his showing career he was awarded Supreme Champion at the Kansas Angus Futurity. In 1989, Kevin married Mary Vandeveer of Wichita, Kansas. Their first son, Matthew Brooks was born in April of 1993 and passed away in November 1995. Then in March of 1996, Kevin and Mary were so excited to welcome Nathan Boyd into the family. Then their family was complete with the welcome addition of Kaleb Brewer in November 1997. The next several years were spent raising boys and farming together. Attending their many sporting and 4-H events. Kevin enjoyed being with his family and raising Angus Cattle. He was very active as a Sumner County 4H livestock leader and was honored to be selected as a Friends of 4-H Award Recipient. Kevin loved visiting with friends and family and talking to anyone who would listen about his boys and his cattle. He always looked forward to attending county fairs, Angus cattle sales and shows, visiting with family, friends, peers and cattle buyers. He would often take at least an hour shopping for only a few items in Walmart, because he would see friends there that he enjoyed visiting with. In years past, Kevin experienced ongoing health issues. Then on June 16, 2020 when an accident with the cow occurred, his health problems increased. He has been in and out of the hospital searching for healing. Then, while in skilled nursing care he was tested positive with COVID-19. Kevin fought the virus as long as his body would allow. He is now enjoying God’s grace in the joy of his salvation and there is no more pain. Kevin is preceded in death by his son Matthew Brooks and his father Thaine Hunt. Survivors include two sons Nathan Hunt and Kaleb Hunt of Wellington, KS. His mother Carol Norris of Wellington, KS. Two sisters Vicki (Ed) Eggers of Genoa, IL. Dianna (Ben) Starburg of McPherson, KS. Nephew Ross (Jannet) Eggers of Niwot, CO. Niece Hillary (Taylor) Shedd of Fort Collins, CO. Niece Emily (Taylor) Scott of Fort Collins, CO. Nephew Jaden Starburg of McPherson, KS. Niece Kilynn Starburg of McPherson, KS. Many extended family members and friends. An outdoor celebration of life will take place sometime in warmer weather in 2021.

Wilks Ranch Purchases Angus Foundation Heifer Package Heifer donated by Benoit Angus, Esbon, Kansas
The Angus Foundation Heifer Package continues to fund Angus youth, education and research. Trying times often reveal what truly is important. The sale of the 2021 Angus Foundation Heifer Package revealed that Angus breeders, like Wilks Ranch, remain dedicated to supporting the future of the Angus breed, even in years of uncertainty. Since 1980, the Angus Foundation Heifer Package has been sold to generate funds to support the Angus Foundation’s mission of youth, education and research. This year, Wilks Ranch of Eastland, Texas, bought the elite opportunity to choose a heifer from the 2020 heifer crop of Benoit Angus of Esbon, Kansas. The Foundation Heifer Package raised $35,000 to support educational programs and scholarships. The package sold on Friday, Jan. 8, 2021, prior to the start of the National Angus Bull Sale at the Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The package also includes 30 days of complimentary insurance from American Live Stock Insurance Co., Batavia, Illinois; free transportation to the buyer’s ranch provided by Lathrop Livestock Transportation, Dundee, Illinois; and an advanced reproductive technology package from Trans Ova Genetics, Sioux Center, Iowa.

Aggieville Showdown, one-of-a-kind Cattle Show By Toni W. Riley Anyone who has been to a cattle show knows the excitement of the grand drive. The class winners return to the ring, there are whispers as the judge evaluates one more time, a hush falls over the spectators as the judge goes to the microphone and makes final comments. THEN, cheers erupt as the grand champion animal is selected.
gural event. The 2021 Showdown will include a western clothing fashion show, a concert with country recording artist Lucas Maddy, a cowboy poet, and vendors providing unique shopping experiences leading up to the climax - the Grand Drive.
The event will begin on April 16 when exhibitors, which Calliham expects from all over the country, start arriving at the Riley County Fairgrounds. The show billed as a prospect cattle show offers $5,000 in prizes, begins at 9:00 AM on the 17th with showmanship, followed by market steers/heifers and Now imagine the grand drive is in downtown Aggieville, Manhattan, Kansas then breeding heifers. – that's right, right in the heart of the "Ville". That's just what will happen on the evening of April 17, when the Aggieville Showdown brings its division At 6:30 PM, the event will move to Moro Street beginning with the pre-drive champion market animals and breeding heifers to a 36-foot by 48-foot entertainment. No other cattle show in the nation has created a Grand Drive showring on Moro Street in the heart of historic Aggieville. in the center of a famous business district. Aggieville, has an old west charm with wooden storefronts and antique marquees. Calliham has connected the atmosphere of Aggieville with the show's logo, featuring the outline of a theater marquee. While the theater is now Ralley House, the marquee is visible the length of Moro Street and a recognizable Aggieville symbol. The moment everyone has been waiting for will begin later that evening, when the division-winning steers step onto a city street - a one of a kind showring. Breeding heifer selection will follow the steers, and then the announcement of the showmanship winners and the evening will culminate with live interviews from the winners. Calliham hopes these interviews, as well as discussions around the ring, will begin conversations about the cattle industry. Aggieville Showdown is the brainchild of Christian Calliham, who graduated "I want the Aggieville Showdown to let people learn about the cattle indusfrom Kansas State University in May of 2020 with a degree in Agribusiness try. I want them to see the hard work and determination that goes into raiswith an emphasis in Marketing. ing and showing cattle." He recalled how he and some friends enjoyed an evening in Aggieville, the For additional information about the Aggieville Showdown, including entry community that developed connecting Kansas State University and Manhatfees and deadlines: go to www.aggievilleshowdown.com. tan, Kansas. The group was discussing the divide between rural and urban. "I just said wouldn't it be great if we could have a cattle show right here in Aggieville!", Calliham recalled. With that simple pronouncement, the Aggieville Showdown began to develop. But bringing such an event to the center of a thriving business district with over 100 unique businesses, including restaurants, bars, and specialty shops, was no easy task. Calliham put his marketing degree to work when he approached Dennis Cook the Director of the Aggieville Business Association. Cook said when Calliham pitched the idea to him, “I was all for it!! When I approached the Business Association Board of Directors, I was expecting some push back, but they were immediately excited.” Cook went on to say that the board said it sounded like a truly unique event, very different and is generating a great deal of excitement in the business district. The establishment of an advisory board was an important element to make the Aggieville Showdown vision into an actual event. The board members provide industry knowledge to insure the event educates the general public about agriculture. Representing diverse agriculture backgrounds, board members and are essential to help exhibitors and the spectators who will be from all walks of life have the best experience possible. The Aggieville Showdown, which is open to any youth exhibitor age 8-25 years old, was postponed from 2020 due to COVID -19 restrictions to the spring 2021. Even with the cancellation of the 2020 show, the Showdown team never stopped planning and used the extra year to expand the inau22 ▪ Kansas Angus News
