If a bull fails to breed, is injured, or dies within one year of the sale, we will offer to write you a check for the full purchase price you paid, minus salvage value (if any). It is unconditional for the first year, period. No minimums, no credit unless you request it, no excuses. We expect these bulls to make you money and we will stand behind them. DELIVERY Bulls selling for at least $3000 to buyers in Washington, Oregon and Idaho will be fed for 30-40 days and delivered for free. We would like to deliver most of the bulls in the last 10 days of March. If you need us to feed your bulls longer, we will feed them an additional 30 days for $100 and deliver in the last 10 days of April. Volume buyers of 5 or more bulls will have their bulls delivered any time before May 15 at no charge. Washington buyers may haul their bull home within 3 days of the sale and save $75 per bull. You will notice this logo included in the information for many of the Angus bulls in this sale book. This indicates that a 50k genetic test has been performed and calculated into the EPDs on that bull. 50k improves the accuracy as much as approximately 7 to 20 progeny records, depending on the trait. (see table below)

Herd Builder Philosophy Our program and philosophy is to steadily improve the genetics for traits that

will make our customers money. Everything is important, from conception to consumption, and we prioritize selection for traits in that order. Fertility, fleshing ability, structural soundness

It all begins with a live calf. Cows must be able to travel and maintain their flesh while raising a calf and breeding back on time. They must do this in a forage grazing scenario with minimum additional inputs. Cows that fail in these areas must be eliminated from the gene pool, while those that excel are identified and propagated. We consider these traits before anything else, because without these nothing else matters.

Calving ease, udders, disposition

Considered “convenience traits” in some places, we understand that our customers are busy people and time is money. These are threshold traits; in these areas cattle are either good enough, or they’re not.

Performance and Milking ability

Cattle have to grow and perform. We know our customers sell their calves by the pound. We also understand that profitability is the net result of Revenue – Expenses, not simply gross pounds produced. We strive to produce the optimum level of weaning growth and milk that will match the environment and management scenario of commercial cattlemen in the arid west. The $W index is a good tool that incorporates calving ease, weaning growth, milk, energy requirements and mature cow size into one number that is a good indicator for profitability for most cow-calf operators. 2/3 of the bulls in this sale rank in the top 25% of the Angus breed for $W.

Carcass traits

We don’t like extreme marbling cattle with gaudy $B numbers. Look at any Wagyu to see why. We do appreciate heavily muscled, big ribeye cattle that produce BEEF. Carcass data from JR ranch fed steers heavily influenced by our genetics shows that cattle can still grade a high % Choice and Prime even without extreme $B numbers. The following is datafrom 94 JR Ranch born, raised and fed steers, harvested at AB Foods in Toppenish between October 2013 and November 2014. Average HCW 853, Dressing% 63.3%

Our programs have come a long way in the last few years, and we are proud of the set of bulls we have to offer. As a group, the bulls in the Herd Builder Bull Sale will be as sound, thick, and easy fleshing as any set of bulls to sell anywhere in the northwest this spring. We have screened for feet/leg structure, performance and disposition. However, no one is as critical of our cattle as we are, and none is perfect. We frequently will help our customers by making a list of bulls that will fit their specific needs, and/or a list of a few they should avoid. Welcome! Thanks for taking the time to look through our sale book. I guess we realize there are lots of options for purchasing bulls today and are pleased that you are considering our program here. We are certainly unique; not following the mainstream per se, but heavily concentrating on returning profit to our customers with bulls that excel in maternal function. Sound, moderate framed, easy-fleshing cows that never see the feed truck is what it’s about. If they don’t know how to graze forage they don’t make it past their first winter here. We are continually culling cows that don’t maintain enough condition, always sending cows to town that don’t have proper udder or foot structure. I don’t keep a heifer that loses a calf for any reason, they go in the feedlot. Nor will I keep a heifer that needed assistance with a normally presented calf. This has led to a cowherd that calves completely without assistance when they come the right way. I can’t remember the last time I helped an Angus cow at calving. We don’t have time around here to play nursemaid to a bunch of pampered cows! I’m guessing no one else does either. We chose to change the date of our sale to better accommodate our springtime schedules. Both Jeff ’s are heavily involved in family farming operations that get pretty busy the first of March or so. This move allows us to be better prepared to tackle that challenge. We chose the new name to reflect what we see as our mission: “Building better cowherd’s one bull at a time”. The most important thing that we can do for you is sell you bulls that will increase your bottom line. Creating fertile cows with longevity and a disciplined mature size loaded with economically relevant traits is what we are about. This will make your life easier and add to your bottom line. No two ways about it. We finally have put together a large enough group of O C C Unmistakable 946U sons that hopefully you can see what this bull is capable of. I really believe he is a once in a lifetime kind of a bull. I most likely will never find a bull that impacts my cowherd in such a positive way as he has. Unmistakable was selected him from an impressive group of Paxton sons at the Ohlde Cattle Company Sale in Kansas. He was an impressive individual - thick and sound with a tremendous amount of rib shape and volume. He stamps his calves with that same phenotype, and his daughters are beautiful young cows with nice udders. The pleasant surprise has been the incredible performance he adds to calves with the classic OCC phenotype. This combination earned him a spot in the Genex lineup. 946U sons were our high selling sire group in 2014 and a daughter was the high selling female at the Evergreen Exclusive in October. JD Brilliance 12Y (Dalbey) was the top selling bull at the Treasure Test in Montana in 2012. One of the better cowmen I know described him as “the most powerful Angus bull I think I’ve ever seen”. Lots 24-30 are all ET sons of 303. If you are in the business of retaining heifer calve for replacements, I know that using one of her sons will be a great choice. The fertility, soundness and body condition that she exhibits today at the age of twelve is as good as any cow we have ever owned. She is just the right size and does so many things correctly that I strongly feel that every cowherd will benefit from her genetics. Proof of her fertility: Flushed 13 times for an average of 28.3 embryos per flush!

People often ask about the ration the bulls are eating. The bulls here at JR Ranch (includes Sackmann Fall Bulls) are fed a TMR that includes: corn silage, alfalfa haylage, alfalfa hay, corn earlage and a vitamin-mineral pack. Everything except the vitamin-mineral pack was grown here in Othello. Rations are purposely balanced to allow the bulls to utilize fiber. They are fed to achieve moderate growth while utilizing high roughage diets. We pay special attention to our mineral supplements as we live in an area that is highly deficient in minerals vital for optimal health and reproduction in cattle. Our bulls may not be as fat as what you see elsewhere - but we believe that makes them better able to travel, cover cows and last longer. Build Your Herd on a Solid Foundation

The Sackmann Program All forage diet – year round grazing

Our program begins with the management of the cowherd. We primarily calve in the fall and utilize crop aftermath available in the Columbia Basin, such as corn stalks, volunteer wheat and hay regrowth. We have never fed grain or silage of any kind to our cows, nor have we ever creep fed our calves. When feeder hay was below the cost of production we fed a lot of it. With the high price of hay in recent years, we have adapted our program to keep our cost of production in check. We now build a lot of hot wire fence and haul a lot of water, but feed very little hay to the cowherd during the winter.

Focus on Fertility and timely breed-back

Our fall herd is NOT made up of cows that failed to calve in the spring. In fact, our home raised cows are primarily descended from the cows we purchased from Davey Angus that were bred to calve in December and January. These cows were forced to breed back in a short interval, moving a few weeks earlier each year. Given one chance at AI and one cycle with the clean up bulls, (essentially a 22 day breeding season) they successfully made the move from December to September within a few years. Many January and February born heifers have been bred to calve in the fall at an early age and those that are still in the herd are some of our better producers.

Brutal culling process

We have a 2 stage culling process. Our cows are constantly scrutinized for: calving interval, feet/legs, udder quality, disposition, and other traits. I don’t want to keep a daughter in the herd out of any cow that is deemed undesirable for these traits. If she is capable of raising a good calf she becomes a recip for our ET program. Cows deemed unacceptable for these traits are culled at the earliest opportunity. We don’t trim feet here, on cows or bulls.

Cows that look the part

These factors have contributed to the phenotype that is developing in our cows today. Big middled, broody, easy fleshing cows thrive in our environment. Tall, frail, narrow gutted, heavy milkers struggle and are quickly removed from the gene pool. Functional traits that will build better cows for my herd and yours is the highest priority.

Continuous improvement and selection pressure

Sire selection and evaluation of data remain an essential part of our herd’s improvement. Instead of “chasing” extremes and outliers, we prefer to seek out balanced Angus genetics that, when mated correctly, can hit the “optimum” target. 29

I am astounded at her many talents and multi-tasking abilities. I am blessed beyond my ability to effectively communicate. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t thank my parents often enough for the opportunity I have to work in the family farm business and pursue my passion for good Angus cattle. What they have achieved in their 38 year farming career from where they started continues to be my inspiration. Matt Hayter continues to work with us here and becomes more essential to the operation as time goes on. He is putting together a nice Angus herd and has 4 good bulls in the offering this year. Matt clipped all of the sale bulls and was authorized to cull for disposition. I sometimes wonder how I managed to be surrounded by so many outstanding people. We 50k tested all of our bulls in the sale again this year to provide you with more accurate data. EPDs are an important tool and one aspect of our program, just not the sole focus. Too many programs around the country are chasing extremes in birth weight, growth and marbling to the extent that they are losing the qualities of the Angus cow that made the breed number one in the first place. This has led some commercial operations to begin looking to other breeds to get what is missing in their herds. In my opinion, they just need the right kind of Angus. A balanced approach remains the focus of our program. Breeding bulls whose daughters will help keep our commercial customers in business is what we are striving for: fertile, easy fleshing cows with good feet, legs and udder structure that can breed back quickly on an all forage diet and wean a heavy calf relative to her weight. We search far and wide for balanced genetics that will work for you. Moderate mature frame and explosive early growth without too much milk is a combination difficult to find in one animal. We believe we have identified a sire who does just that in OCC Unmistakable 946U. His sons and grandsons are certainly a highlight of this offering.
