www . diamondhranch . org Registered Yearling Bulls & Heifers ~ Commercial Heifer Groups “Dependable cattle from our pasture to yours!” Diamond H Ranch Annual Production Sale March 27, 2024 Located At The Ranch Victoria, KS
FRIENDS AND FELLOW CATTLEMEN
Welcome to the Diamond H Ranch Annual Production Sale. First and foremost, thank you for taking an interest in our program. The last 15 years seem to have flown by and we want to send our appreciation to all of our customers who have supported us throughout this time. As always, genetic improvement and customer satisfaction remain at the top of our priority list. If at any time you have questions or concerns, our doors are always open. We encourage ranch visits to allow customers the time needed to not only view and be around the sale cattle, but also to see the rest of our ranch.
Ever since our last sale (and even prior to that), numerous changes took place as we have prepared and rebuilt parts of our operation in order to welcome our customers to THE RANCH FOR SALE DAY! Our appreciation goes out to LaCrosse Livestock Market for always being so welcoming over the years by allowing us to invade their facility for several days and for always helping us on sale day in a very professional manner. As many of you are aware, we had the opportunity to rebuild due to unforeseen circumstances, so rebuild is what we did! We are looking forward to this next chapter for the ranch and have been more excited than ever to set our operation up for many years to come!
The spring, summer and fall of 2023 were exceptionally dry, but we have a positive outlook for the upcoming grazing and haying season as we finally saw relief in the recent winter months. As in all droughts, extra management was needed in order to keep the cowherd operating at the consistent level we strive for. Through rotational grazing, early weaning and using crop residues…our herd came through the scenario just fine. Even during these hard times, the outlook is exciting for the beef industry and we are looking forward to what the future has in store.
Not only did our sale location change, but we have also made some changes within our herd! Genetically speaking, we set out several years ago to find genetics that could add a little more pay-weight into our offering, while not giving up the other things that we appreciate about the cattle we produce. In the spring of 2023, we purchased two new herd sires, KBHR Charger and RFS Bruno, both of which bring outcross pedigrees and then some (semen available through Allied Genetic Resources)! In addition, we added RFS Luna into the donor program. All of them have their first progeny arriving now and we are definitely liking what we see. We have also continued to pursue and use the new technologies that help solidify our decision making and aid you in your decision making process when selecting seedstock cattle (RightChoice). You will notice new symbols located next to the bulls in the offering. These symbols are for you to use when sorting through the bulls with the use of DNA that we have collected over the last 7-8 years. This is a third-party accredited program that we have access to. This is not available industry wide, which is why it makes the purchasing of seedstock from us a little different than other operations who do not have this tool. Please see page 17 for more information or feel free to contact me and I will gladly explain this in more depth.
In this offering you will find many sons of different sires that are getting us towards the goal we spoke about above. The largest offering of 38 Special progeny to be found anywhere, along with powerful sons by Brunswick, Pathfinder, Stockmarket, BB Propulsion, Warrant, and Propulsion 1326, makes for an exciting line up of newer genetics for our customers. In addition, sires Red River, Red Rock, Rambler, Gladiator, and Spartacus have continued their solid ways of producing cattle we are proud to offer. We also have our commercial heifers from our customer buy back program and they have done an outstanding job yet again and most certainly will be noticed on sale day!
As always, our passion is to provide you with the best seedstock we can and develop long-term relationships in this industry. We will always try to do anything in our power to help any customer that needs it. On sale day it’s all about the cattle, but in life…it’s those relationships made with like-minded people that you cannot replace. Seeing familiar faces and hearing success stories from the hard work we all put in throughout the year is the true reward! Again, we thank all of you for taking an interest in our program and giving us the opportunity to work with you. Without our customers, family and friends we would not have gotten to where we are and we extend our most heartfelt appreciation to you all!
We look forward to seeing you all on sale day and wish you nothing but the best!
God Bless,

AVERAGES TO KEEP IN MIND
Data collection and utilization is part of the daily management at Diamond H Ranch. Beyond standard measurements, we pay close attention to fertility and conception rates, cow efficiency and DNA testing is also utilized. We are constantly measuring and collecting as much data as possible to evaluate our herd so that we can move in positive directions. In addition to the data, good ‘ol phenotypic evaluations are something that we do on a regular basis.
As mentioned above, please remember when viewing the data that our SimAngus cattle will display EPDs and percentile ranks from the Simmental Association. Our high percentage Red Angus cattle will display EPDs and percentile ranks from the Red Angus Association. The registration numbers listed are specific to their breed if you feel the need to look up additional information.

UNDERSTANDING EPDs
$ INDEXES · WHAT ARE API AND TI?
$ Indexes
Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ Indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ Indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ Indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI
First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements, use API...if not, then use TI. Just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls (as described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed). The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed.
For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ Indexes visit www.simmental.org.
Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) — The difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future prog- eny of an individual of average genetic merit in the base time frame for the genetic evaluation. EPDs are estimated from phenotypic merit of an individual and all of its relatives and are estimates of one-half the breeding values. EPDs are generally reported in units of measurement for the trait.
Average Daily Gain (ADG) — Measurement of daily body weight change over a specified period of time of an animal on a feed test.
Back Fat Thickness (BF) — Estimates the average differences that are expected in fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between progeny of different animals.
Birth Weight (BW) — The weight of a calf taken within 24 hours after birth (reported in pounds). The EPD value predicts the difference in average birth weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average birth weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average birth weights.
Calving Ease (CE) — The ease with which a bull’s calves are born to first calf heifers. When comparing calving ease EPDs of two sires, the larger EPD indicates a higher percent of unassisted births for calves sired by this bull.
Carcass Weight (CW) — The EPD predicts the difference in average carcass weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. A positive number indicates heavier-than-aveage carcass weights while a negative value indicates lower-than-average carcass weights.
Frame Score (FRAME) — A score based on subjective evaluation of height or actual measurement of hip height.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) — Percent of unassisted births in first calving daughters.
Marbling Score (MARB) — A subjective evaluation of the amount and distribution of intramuscular fat. The EPD value predicts the difference in average marbling score of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other evaluated bulls. A positive value indicates higher-than-average marbling scores while a negative value indicates lower-than-average marbling scores.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW) — The weaning weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves. The EPD value predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves compared to daughters of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average weaning weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average weaning weights.
Milk (MILK) — The milking ability of a bull’s daughter. The EPD value predicts the difference (due to milking ability) in average 205-day weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves compared to calves of all other bulls evaluated. Positive values indicate above average milking ability of daughters while negative values indicate below average milking ability.
Most Probable Producing Ability (MPPA) — An estimate of a cow’s future productivity for a trait (such as progeny weaning weight ratio) based on her past productivity. For example, a cow’s MPPA for weaning ratio is calculated from the cow’s average progeny weaning ratio, the number of her progeny with weaning record, and the repeatability of weaning weight.
Ribeye Area (REA) — The average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint.
Scrotal Circumference (SCROTAL) — A measure of testes size obtained by measuring the distance around the testicles in the scrotum with a circular tape.
Stayability (STAY) — The expected difference, in percentage probability, that a bull’s daughters will remain in the herd until at least six years of age.
Weaning Weight (WW) — Calf weight taken between 160 and 250 days of age and adjusted to 205 days of age and a mature dam equivalent (reported in pounds). The EPD value predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average weaning weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average weaning weights.
Yield Grade (YG) — Predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score. This EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA, and BF EPDs.
Yearling Weight (YW) — Weight taken between 330 and 440 days of age and adjusted to 365 days of age and a mature dam equivalent (reported in pounds). The EPD value predicts the difference in average 365-day weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bull’s evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average yearling weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average yearling weights.

“Ever since we participated in the American Simmental Assoication’s Cow Herd DNA Roundup, we have seen first hand just how beneficial it is to our operation (as well as our customer’s) to have DNA processed on our cattle. We have always made it a priority to provide our customers with the most accurate information possible. Combining DNA information, the pedigree of a bull and/or heifer and the individual performance data significantly increases the reliability of their EPDs. All registered cattle in this offering have genomic enhanced EPDs (powered by Neogen, the world’s leader in DNA testing for agriculture). We always incorporate phenotypic traits such as disposition, fertility, foot and udder structure and mothering abilities into the equation for success...DNA simply adds to that equation!

Benefits of GE-EPDs to Cow/Calf Producers
Maternal GE-EPDs – Improve profits per cow:
♦ Verify calving-ease bulls, saving time, cost and stress when calving heifers
♦ Identify bulls and cows with superior reproduction traits to improve cowherd fertility and maternal productivity
♦ Better fertility improves conception rates, calving window and calf-crop uniformity
Performance GE-EPDs – Optimize efficient returns:
♦ Produce cows that improve pounds weaned per exposed female
♦ Produce cows for optimum growth for your grazing environment
♦ Improve feed efficiency, producing heifers and cows that gain well on less feed and pass thrifty traits on to their calves
Quality GE-EPDs – More consistency of beef quality:
♦ Helps customers retaining calves or selling into grids or value networks
♦ Adds value and reputation quality in stockers or feeder calves
♦ Predicts quality up front, saving years of valuable time, with less hassle than collecting carcass data

SimAngus Reference Sire Summary
WS 38 Special 20H was the high selling Red Simmental bull from the Wilkinson Farms Simmentals sale in 2021. He has an outcross pedigree by Hook’s Full Figures and he has a very balanced EPD profile. We offered his first calf crop at our production sale in 2023 and ever since then, his progeny continues to be extremely impressive! This sire will add extra length and depth while pushing the scales and grid. He has 10 EPDs in the top 35% of his breed! His BW has been tested on heifers and we saw no problems as a majority of his progeny are between 70 to 80 pounds at birth.

GW RED River 722G is a sire purchased from Gateway Simmentals out of Montana. This sire is as consistent as they come and this is due largely to his very proven bloodlines. This bull has been used as a natural service sire and although his progeny are born later than most, it does not take long for them to find their way to the top. His disposition is very good and we see the same in his progeny.

top donor cow. She raised this calf and to say the least, he was never offered for sale. He is as well balanced as his sire and he comes from a female who carries an MPPA of 116…his offspring are the kind to build a herd with! He keeps birth weight in check and the cattle express strong growth and maternal traits. We do not see many holes in this sire; his disposition and phenotype are top notch.

Hybrid vigor plays a huge role in our operation. From the beginning, we knew that Red Angus would be the foundation of our herd, but we also knew that breed complementarity was something we could not ignore.
Through a systematic Red Angus and Simmental crossbreeding program, we can bridge the gap in our never ending quest to create the most balanced animals we can that have the ability to fit multiple scenarios and environments.
Inside our own ranch, the crossbred female continually proves herself and we have the data to back it up. Increased fertility, efficiency and longevity are just a few of the things we love about these cattle and we will continue to combine the best genetics out there to create them.

Red Angus Reference Sire Summary
This AI sire has produced some of the higher performing calves on a consistent basis throughout the US in numerous seedstock programs. He intrigued us enough that we bought a son of his who also happens to have progeny in the offering. Propulsion progeny exhibit a balance between power and efficiency and have continued to be high selling cattle in multiple scenarios.

Leland Propulsion 1326 was the high selling bull in the 2022 Leland Red Angus sale. The cowman will love this sire and his phenotype. He is very similar to his sire with exceptional depth of body and balance. His Dictate mother has produced multiple front end cattle. This sale will have his first progeny we offer and most certainly will not be the last.
Bieber CL Stockmarket E119 has become a very highly used sire in the Red Angus breed. He will definitely have you sleeping with ease during calving season and his calves will excel in the growth category. He is one of those rare finds of a true spread bull. His progeny continue to sit in the top end of many sales across the country, including our own.

Lorenzen Warrant 8273 is another higher performing sire. In our recent quest to add more pay weight and shorten the growth curve on Red Angus cattle, we felt that this sire could fit the bill.
The interesting thing about hisprogeny is that there are none in the cull pen. They fit numerous matings and scenarios… they simply just do their job.
Brunswick is not a brand new name to the breed, but he has not been used extensively in southern states. We used him specifically to pursue more performance not only in growth, but carcass as well…and he did not disappoint. His progeny are thick, deep, gentle and have more than above average females. His top 1% REA, 18% MARB, and 4% YG scream profitability for feeder cattle; the great part is that they also weigh up on the scale.

Pathfinder is a new AI sire that is turning heads for his exceptional growth, phenotype and maternal traits. He has several front-end progeny in this offering and was used again after we saw the first calf crop. He adds extra length to his offspring and will put additional pounds in your calf crop. Last time we checked, that is how we all get paid.

Bieber Spartacus A193 is another proven Red Angus sire that we have used on multiple heifer projects and thought enough of the sire that we purchased a son of his for natural service. He will calve very easy and his progeny have even more to offer after the yearling year.
We purchased Bieber Spartacus H263 as a natural service sire after we saw what his sire had to offer. The spread and carcass on this sire has now been tested and his disposition is carried through to his progeny. This sire has just a little more growth than A193 and his females are starting to shine inside the operation. His progeny will calve easy and do very well in the growth column.

Bieber Gladiator H106 was purchased after we had analyzed his bloodlines a few years ago. Not only were the set of bulls we sold out of his sire (Bieber Gladiator C386) head turners, but the females we retained out of his grand sire on the bottom side (Bieber Cl Atomic C218) are some of our top, young Red Angus females in the herd. The results were too good to ignore and H106 combined the best of both worlds with Gladiator on the top side and Atomic on the bottom side of his pedigree.

In no way shape or form can you miss DHCC Stockmarket 382L in the pen. Many of our past customers will recognize the Maverick bloodline on the bottom side and for good reason. Genetics from our mainstay sire for the last six years, combined with the Red Angus sire who died too soon, create true spread cattle who offer a ton of flexibility in matings. Bieber CL Stockmarket E119 cattle are being chased all over the country from breeders trying to get more of those genetics. Lot 2 carries the G+ and ATM badges, and has a very nice eye appeal. All Stockmarket progeny that we have raised end up very high on the list of cattle to check out and this SimAngus sire is no different.
DHCC 38 SPECIAL 355L
Lot 1 is a prime example of what two proven animals can attain. His sire and dam created an extremely thick, deep bodied, high growth, high carcass and highly maternal animal. At 10 years of age, his dam just did another outstanding job. B404, along with his granddam on the bottom side (U818) have repeatedly put front end sires in our offering and their females have never been offered for sale. Finding Red Angus genetics that marble is not that hard; however, finding those that can also offer top 11% REA is more challenging. This sire does both! He has top 3% WW, 2% YW, 1% Stay and carries G+ third party accreditation. 303L will help move any cowherd in the right direction.
DHCC STOCKMARKET 382L
Many of you got a glimpse of 38 Special progeny last year and this year you will get to see the whole package. DHCC 38 Special 355L is just the first of many 38 Special offspring that will continually have you looking across the fence line come sale day and say “Oh, its’s another 38 Special progeny!” In a recent sale we viewed, every one they offered outsold other sire groups by 30-40%. We are not the only ones seeing this! Look for this young herd sire to push growth and put front pasture females in your replacement pen.

DHCC Stockmarket 377L carries the G+ and ATM badge just like his half-brother, Lot 2. Honestly, we could not decide which one of the two we liked best. They were both raised out of first calf heifers from proven bloodlines. On the bottom side of his pedigree, we have two of the most influential animals together that we have ever owned to create DHCC Rambler 644D (Maverick and 733). By combining him with Beatrice 0205 (who raised numerous front-end progeny and made it to 14 years old before we culled her) we kind of knew this mating would be a success. Don’t put your hand down if your want a combination of some of the best we have to offer in Lot 4.
Similar to Lot 1, DHCC Brunswick 338L is a young herd sire that is raising all the bars that equate to profitability. The power this bull exhibits combined with his carcass qualities will improve any bottom line. I would also look at his females for replacements as we still own his granddam on the bottom side (B418) who you will find in multiple pedigrees throughout this offering. Lot 5 has 11 EPDs in the top 30% of the breed, a G+ and ATM badge and looks great in the pen.

We expect nothing less out of Lot 6

Lot 8 has more to offer in the sale than just a low birth weight. We expect DHCC Pathfinder 346L’s progeny to be more like his sire on the bottom side and have calves that come easy and grow very well. Another 38 Special son out of a special cow who just keeps raising them right. G932 has never had one of her calves culled and her sons have all been at the top end of our sale list. Young cows that can produce like this repeatedly grab our attention very quickly. DHCC 38 Special 359L is another well balanced sire that can be used in multiple scenarios.

If you like pounds and carcass, Lot 15 is another Warrant son who can provide just that as he carries the ATM badge. High percentage Red Angus bulls like this have been getting harder to find as of the last 7-10 years. If you’re finding that your calf crop is shrinking in pay weight, DHCC Warrant 333L can help offset that difference.
Many of you have seen Red River progeny before and this offering has the best we have raised. The GW Movin On 183C progeny have been one of the most consistent red Simmental lines out there for the last 6-7 years and for good reason. As a breeder, you don’t find bloodlines that can do it all all the time along with making your job easier. If you do not possess these genetics in your red SimAngus operation already, you should.

DHCC 38 Special 307L has maternal genetics on both the top side and bottom side of his pedigree. B428 at 10 years of age does it again. If you have noticed throughout the catalog that Hondo on the bottom side just keep showing up…take note, they are not all out of one donor cow and for good reason. B428 has had a track record of raising great cattle since she started and it does not look like she is done quite yet.
DHCC Red River 340L is a well-balanced SimAngus sire that will catch your eye in the pen and provide genetics with above average growth and calve easy. He will produce females that will last inside your herd. The more progeny Red River has, the better his numbers are and they are not falling off. Sires like Lot 26 is just another reason why these cattle continue to move forward in our herd.

Lot 28, 29 and 30 are three SimAngus sires with below average birth weight and above average growth out of three completely different pedigrees. DHCC Spartacus 305L is a dark cherry red heifer bull with some added bonuses. Not only does he bring the calving ease to the table, he will also add pounds into your calf crop. You might recognize his dam, B418, in the pedigree because her daughter raised Lot 5 in this offering. Consistent cow lines don’t leave operations, and this is another great example of that.

Lot 34, 35 and 36 are all BB Propulsion sons that we specifically put together in the sale to represent the consistency of this sire. If you need multiple sires with very similar attributes who are all half-brothers or have a large pasture that you need to cover with multiple sires, here is a great opportunity to increase the consistency in your calf crop.

DHCC Brunswick L358 is a very nice 1B Red Angus female whose paper work is hard to ignore. 11 EPDs in the top 30% of the breed and she has the looks to go with it. By being in the top 11% CE, 12% BW, 13% HB and 7% Stay, longevity is her makeup all while she passes growth and carcass onto her progeny. You do not find many heifers on the market with her kind of paperwork and potential.
DHCC 38 SPECIAL L364
To start off the registered heifers we have a well-balanced SimAngus female from two very consistent and proven cow lines on both the top and bottom side. DHCC Rambler L330 has two granddams that need little introduction in 733 and W909. Her dam, C525, has placed numerous sons and daughters at the top and her sire should be recognized by many of you from our previous sales. Did we mention her grandsires of Maverick and Yukon…not bad company in the pedigree of this young female.
DHCC BRUNSWICK L358
This is the first 38 Special female we have ever offered! Our opinion of his females is just as strong as it is for his sons. DHCC 38 Special L364 has some amazing genetics in Merlin 018A and B433 on the bottom side. Her granddam (B433) raised Lot 7 in this offering at 10 years of age and her daughter H018 did a great job raising this one.

Propulsion and Stockmarket come together in the pedigree of Lot 72 to put 13 EPDs above average and take a look at her carcass and growth columns. We referenced in the sire summary that we felt Propulsion 1326 had a little different twist to him than his sire BB Propulsion. That twist is the Leland Dictate 7527 female. We chose to buy 1326 for many reasons, but his cowman appeal was a big factor and this heifer shows that.

For the last 20 Years we have put a good amount of focus in higher API cattle. This number is not the only things that matters when selecting replacements, but every time it climbs up on a prospect and you go look at the animal…your rarely disappointed! Lot 74 is one of those examples why so many Simmental and SimAngus breeders use the index heavily.

Lot 81 has her granddam (Y010) written all over her. We culled her last year at 13. We still remember the way she stopped after she walked out of the chute for the final time… she turned and looked at us when we said “It’s time to go, Honey.”
That was the only day we ever questioned Y010 in her tenure here.
It’s hard to let the great ones go, but DHCC Pathfinder L373 looks so much like her dam and possesses many of the same genetic attributes that her granddam carried. She passes calving ease, front end growth, carcass and maternal traits on to her progeny and we would expect nothing less from Lot 81.

DHCC Spartacus L347 is a ¾ Red Angus female that represents why we have kept so many of them around the operation over the years. Not only were they the result of the very first crossbred matings we ever made, but they are the kind of cattle you just do not worry about. Year in and year out they keep getting the job done. Good cattle always stick around in every operation and we can attest to how often the “blue tags” are in that category.

Commercial Heifer Groups
The Commercial Heifer Groups come from a selected group off of the farm of Darren Hodgkinson of Pratt, KS, Maier Farms of Hoisington, KS and Zeigler Farms of Natoma, KS. All of these operations are long-term customers of ours who have repeatedly used our sires on their cow herd. These heifers represent the top 60% of their 2023 calf crop. All operations are Commercial Red Angus and Red SimAngus. Many of these heifers carry Simmental in their pedigrees, but nothing past 1/2 SM x 1/2 AR. These females have all been calf hooded, palpated, received a third round of shots as well as Multimin.
The use of cross bred females in the commercial cow/calf operation can be a very profitable scenario as we see continued longevity and reproductive efficiencies from these cattle. They do not miss on the performance side of things either.
These heifers have been grouped by weight and frame scores, which were taken on 1-24-2024. They will be sold as groups of five. If buyers take all five, they can purchase the next group of five for the same price. The buyer will not be allowed to sort through the group; they must take all five. These heifers are guaranteed open and with a viable reproductive tract.

MULTI-BREED GENETIC EVALUATION Powered By BOLT
International Genetic Solutions (IGS) is an unprecedented collaboration between progressive breed associations fervently committed to enhancing commercial profitability. The collaboration has yielded the world’s largest genetic evaluation of beef cattle with over 17 million animals and 120,000+ genotypes.
In keeping with our commitment to the cattle industry, IGS is pleased to announce the IGS Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT. The new genetic evaluation provides more predictive EPDs, better use of genomics, more accurate accuracy reported with EPDs, all with weekly evaluations. The announcement ushers in a new era in genetic evaluation—an era made possible by a genetic evaluation system dubbed BOLT (Biometric Open Language Tools, owned by Theta Solutions, LLC).
The concept for BOLT started in 2014 as a research endeavor between the American Simmental Association and Drs. Bruce Golden and Dorian Garrick. BOLT is, quite simply, the most revolutionary and powerful genetic evaluation system in existence. Its power allows IGS to leverage genetic evaluation methodology that was once thought to be untenable on large databases—methodology that significantly improves genetic prediction. In December 2016, IGS published a multi-breed stayability, the industry’s first EPD using BOLT and the first single-step methodology applied to a large beef cattle database. Since that time, the IGS genetic evaluation team has worked toward fully implementing BOLT with an automated system that enables weekly evaluations for an entire suite of EPDs. As of May 5th, 2018, ASA is the first of the IGS partners to publish a full suite of EPDs generated by the IGS Multi-breed Genetic Evaluation powered by BOLT.
Here are the notable changes in the evaluation:
Movement of EPDs and reranking. EPDs and indexes will change. These changes will be more dramatic for younger, lower accuracy cattle. The IGS team has tested the changes and proven the new EPDs result in superior predictions of genetic merit.
Shrinking of EPD range. You will notice a reduction in the range of EPDs for most traits. The IGS evaluation team tested the statistical veracity of the reduction and it has proven to be in line with expectations based on the genetic variation in the population.
Improved use of genomics. With the switch to the BOLT software, IGS will use single-step genomic evaluation on all EPDs. Single-step uses DNA markers, pedigree information and phenotypic data simultaneously in the prediction of EPDs. Previously, molecular breeding values (MBVs) were calculated from the genomic information and those MBVs were blended in a separate procedure into the EPD predictions. The single-step method squeezes more information from the DNA markers than the previous approach allowed. Additionally, with single-step, the genomic information will not only enhance each EPD for the genotyped animals but also will be used in the EPD estimates of relatives.
It is well established that DNA markers vary greatly in their effect on traits—ranging from large to virtually no impact. To leverage this biological fact in a statistically advantageous manner, the BOLT single-step method only uses markers that have a meaningful impact on the traits of interest, while ignoring those that have little to no effect. Research has shown that by using this approach, BOLT reduces statistical “noise” and thereby increases the accuracy of the EPD prediction compared to other single-step methods.
It is important to note, continued collection of phenotypic records remains a vital part of genetic predictions. DNA testing will never replace the need to record and submit phenotypes.
More accurate accuracy. In the previous IGS evaluation platform and all others in existence other than BOLT, the calculation of the accuracy associated with each EPD is achieved through “approximation” methods. It has long been known these methods are a less than optimal approach to the calculation of accuracy—tending to overestimate accuracy. By employing unique computing strategies that leverage both software and hardware efficiencies, BOLT performs what was previously unthinkable—utilizing a sampling methodology to calculate what is essentially true accuracy. Unlike approximated accuracies, BOLT-derived accuracies will result in predicted movements associated with possible change holding true over time. This is not the case with the previous IGS software or any other system currently in existence.
While the IGS evaluation team and partners are excited to release this new chapter in genetic evaluation, the new genetic evaluation system will only realize its true potential if the selection is made using its EPD and index values. Hands down, there is no better (more accurate) way to select for quantitative traits than an EPD. Economic indexes predict net profit by weighing the EPD for economically relevant traits coupled with economic estimates. To compete with other protein sources, it is imperative that the beef industry adopts the best science and technology to make better breeding selection decisions.

Terms — Terms of sale are cash unless other satisfactory arrangements have been made.
Bidding — All animals sell to the highest bidder. The auctioneer will settle disputes or challenges regarding bids and his decision will be final.
Announcements — Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the information printed in this catalog.
Purchaser’s Risk and Insurance — Each animal becomes the risk of the buyer as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that the animals are well cared for until possession exchange occurs. Exchange of animal(s) must be made within two weeks of the day of the sale. Insurance of purchase(s) is not provided, but is recommended as transportation is at the risk of the buyer. Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustments — All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing within six months of the sale date or no later than six months after the animal reaches 12 months of age. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the seller if in good condition and complying with the health requirements of the seller’s stats. The seller shall be entitled to six months of trial after the animal is returned to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months the seller is unable to prove that the animal is a breeder, the seller shall, at the option of the buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or refund the purchase price. The return of the full purchase price shall in any case be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any expenses incurred shall be the seller’s responsibility if the animal is found to be a non-breeder.
Trucking — Transportation will be free within 100 miles of the ranch. Any distance over 100 miles shall be the responsibility of the buyer.
Identification — Seller offers each animal with a readable tattoo corresponding to its registration.

THANK YOU
It is an amazing and rewarding time to be where we are in the cattle business (even considering the challenges that we have been faced with). Again, we sincerely thank you for your interest in our program and for giving us the opportunity to serve you as a Seed Stock Producer. Thank you to our past customers for allowing us to do something that we truly enjoy. We would also like to thank our family and friends who provide us with their constant love and support as we pursue our dream, our fellow producers for their guidance and encouragement and the Good Lord for all that we have been blessed with.
We wish all of you the best and we hope that 2024 brings you much joy and success!
Blessings, Justin, Jade, Alyson, Graycee, Brynn and Stockton
