Fall Calving Cows with Heifer Calves at Side Spring Cow/Calf Pairs • Bred Heifers Open Yearling Heifers • Prime Donor Prospects

Welcome to Prime Maternal,

Last year Red Angus breeders from Easern Maryland to Oklahoma and from South Alabama to Wisconsin gathered in Jane Lew, West Virginia with Cedar Hill, and friends, to appraise a functional, low input, high profit set of females. Over the past 12 months we have received really positive feedback from the folks who invested in our genetics and put those females to work in their programs. So, we’ve dug deep into our respective programs to make the 2024 version of Prime Maternal our best yet!

This 2024 Prime Maternal offering features not only the superior cow herd building traits folks have come to expect from our programs but equally elite calf value traits. From start to finish you’ll find elite Red Angus genetics, capable of producing higher quality grade, faster rate of gain, heavier pay-weight and more efficient feed conversion and ultimately greater Profitability. In fact, this entire offering averages top 10% for Fertility, top 8% for $Profit, 10% for GridMaster index, best 9% for $Feeder, and 13% for $Ranch.

R.A. Brown Ranch held their 50th annual sale on October 9th; the next day Cedar Hill Farm had their trailers loaded with bulls and females to deliver to cow/calf producers in the southeast and mid-Atlantic regions. The Stickels joined the R.A.Brown Ranch cooperator team in 2001, and now have made over 22 years of cumulative genetic contributions to the R.A Brown Ranch program. Our collective relationship with the Brown family has provided economical access for local producers to one of the nation’s elite seedstock programs. As you study the pedigrees of the females in Prime Maternal, notice the stacked generations of sires that not only impacted the R.A. Brown Ranch program but helped build the breed. The females selling in Jane Lew, West Virginia on November 2nd are the dams, daughters and sisters of some of the high selling bulls and most influential sires. Perhaps even more importantly these females are adapted to this environment with it’s higher humidty, “washier” pastures and endophyte fescue.

Join us at Cedar Hill Farm in Jane Lew, WV on Saturday, November 2nd.  We’re sharing some of our highest MPPA producers, elite profitability indexes, and front pasture phenotype, and to a large extent, we presented the cattle in their working clothes. What you see is what you’ll have early next spring when calves start hitting the ground. Your investment will be in genetics, not extra fat cover or fitting.  In short, you’ll find females that have been designed to further Red Angus’ leadership role by providing genetics to enhance beef industry profitability.  Please let us know if you have any questions about the cattle or need assistance with travel arrangements, or participating in the auction on-line via DV Auction.

$Profit - Nearly every trait that impacts profit.

Revenue Traits:

• Calving Ease = More Calves

• Weaning & Yearling EPD = More pay-weight

• Days to Conception = more lbs and more calves

• Carcass Weight = worth more up to 1050 lbs.

• Marbling = valued based on grid premiums

• Ribeye area = value as impacts Yield Grade

• % Retail Product = more yield is more meat

Cost Traits:

• Cow Mature Size = in general, bigger eats more

• Cow intake = increased feed intake/increased costs

• Feed Efficiency = cost of Gain

• Carcass Weight = worth less over 1050 lbs.

• Marbling = valued based on grid premiums

$Ranch - Cow/Calf Profit Index for producers who sell calves at weaning and want to optimize pounds of calf produced per acre.

$Feeder - Post-weaning Index includes traits that impact profitability in the growing, finishing and carcass phases of the beef supply chain.

GridMaster - Newly formulated Red Angus Index that Predicts profitability in the feedlot and carcass phases.

FERT(CowFertility)

Predicts differences in the number of calves produced by bulls' daughters by the time they reach the age of 8 years. Daughters from a bull with a 2.0 FERT EPD would be expected to produce on average, one more calf by the time they reach 8 years of age than daughters from a bull with a 1.0 FERT EPD.

We understand the expense side of the Beef Industry’s Profit equation...

For over two decades we’ve partnered with R.A. Brown Ranch to test Cedar Hill genetics in some of the largest and most progressive cow/calf operations in the Southern Plains and throughout the Gulf Coast regions. That relationship has provided opportunities to have our sires enrolled in structured progeny carcass tests, collection of feed intake data, foot and docility scores and utilization of $Profit economic selection indices and Feed Efficiency EPDs.

This commitment to measuring all economically relevant traits combined with feedback from such great ranchers ensures that our Red Angus are meeting customers’ phenotypic demands while meeting their genetic goals.

She’s the highest profitability female we’ve ever offered for sale, and easily beats the Top 1% threshold for $Profit and $Ranch. Of course, Fertility drives profitability and Lot 1 ranks in the top 1/10 of 1% for Fertility. She comes by that naturally, Powerhouse’s dam has maintained a 359-day calving interval across her first 6 calves, and Lot 1’s Oracle dam maintains a 369-day calving interval and a 104 MPPA.

FERTILITY EPD

The Fertility EPD (FERT) predicts differences in the calf crop percentage expected from a bull’s daughters! High Fertility EPD bulls will build cow herds with consistently better breed back and deliver a higher percentage of calves to the weaning pen.

Higher Fertility also lowers cow herd culling requirements which reduces replacement rates; which in turn reduces cow herd depreciation costs and provides a larger percentage of the heifer calves that can be sold. As you would imagine, these more desirable outcomes drive HUGE differences in profitability, so the Fertility EPD has tremendous impact on $Profit and $Ranch.

The Sale Catalog Data Explanation on the top of page 6 shows where the FERT EPD is presented in the sale catalog. The example below is useful for better understanding the trait units of the FERT EPD.

$Profit

Developed for operations that raise their own replacements and retains ownership on steers and cull heifers, which are marketed on a Quality Based Grid.

$Profit assumes a bull will sire 100 progeny over his useful lifespan.

$Profit Combines all the traits that comprise both $Ranch and $Feeder to yield one number that predicts Ranchers' Bottom Lines.

$Profit Example:

• Bull A has a $Profit of $15,000

• Bull B has a $Profit of $10,000

= We would expect Bull "A" to produce an additonal $5000 of profit to the ranch over his service life ($50 per calf x 100 calves) when compared to Bull "B".

Multi-generational use of $Profit will move both $Ranch and $Feeder in a positive direction, just not as fast as the singular use of $Ranch of $Feeder.

$Ranch

Developed for cow/calf producers who retain their own replacements and market 100% of the steer calves and cull heifers after weaning.

Traits included in $Ranch: Fertility, Milk, Weaning Growth, Cow Herd Feed Intake and Mature Cow Size

$Ranch Example:

• Bull A has a $Ranch of $80

• Bull B has a $Ranch of $40

= We would expect Bull "A" to produce $40 per head increased profit when compared to bull "B" in a cow/calf operation that raised their own replacements and sold all other calves at weaning.

Multi-generational use of $Ranch will ultimately result in: moderation in mature cow size, improved fertility, modest gains in weaning weight, improved stocking rates and ultimately - increased pounds of calf harvested per unit of feed/land resource.

$Feeder

Developed to compare how bulls will impact profitability in the post-weaning phase (weaning to harvest).

Traits included in $Feeder: Feed Intake, Post-Weaning Gain, Carcass Weight, Quality Grade (Marbling), Yield Grade

$Feeder Example:

• Bull A has a $Feeder of $100

• Bull B has a $Feeder of $150

= We would expect calves sired by Bull "B" to earn $50 per head increaded profit between weaning and harvest when compared to calves sired by bull "A".

Use of $Feeder in sire selection will maximize Feedlot Closeouts, but with no regard for the cow herd. Thus $Feeder should be used by herds that purchase their replacement females.

• Lot 26 has one son working in the 6S Land & Cattle program in New Mexico and another slated to sell in the March 2025 R.A. Brown Ranch Sale. Her amazing dam is still active after producing 11 calves with a 356-day calving interval and a 106 MPPA.

• Bred A.I. to LSF SRR Nextgen 2407K, then exposed to Insight from 5/25 - 7/12. Due on 2/16/25 to the A.I. service with a Bull, according to ultrasound.

• It’s not every sale you find a cow that’s already produced a $16,500 herd bull, and it’s even more rare that she’s halfway down the sale order. That just shows how deep this offering is. Her second calf, also a bull, is slated to sell in the March 2025 R.A. Brown Ranch Sale. Wonder what the NextGen bull calf in her belly could be worth?

• It’ll be hard to pick between the Cornerstone heifer calf and the Oracle x Deep End bred dam, who is a proven donor in the Wright’s Mill ET program. Like his sire, Genuine, Cornerstone excels for Calving Ease and Marbling, but he delivers additional traits such as improved Feed Efficiency, Ribeye Area and Yield Grade.
