45th Annual Gelbvieh and Balancer Bull Sale
Monday, Feb. 24 • 1:00 p.m. CST
65 Bulls Sell • Black & Red • At the Ranch: 20453 Cendak Road, Pierre, SD
Greetings!
Welcome to our 45th Annual Gelbvieh and Balancer Bull Sale. We would like to thank all our past customers for your continued support and confidence in our program over the years. Your friendship has meant the world to us. We are looking forward to being your continued source for performance driven, maternally backed, commercially focused Gelbvieh and Balancer Genetics. We believe that Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics produce the hardest working female in the beef industry. Our focus is on building the optimal female that can thrive in any environment. We place maximum emphasis on maternal traits including udder quality, fertility, fleshing ability, and longevity. Our cattle run in large pasture where they are required to climb steep elevations and travel long distances for water. Structurally sound, easy doing cattle are a must. The sires we utilize within our cow herd are selected to produce high performing, fertile, easy fleshing cattle that are problem free and profitable. Our goal is to take the guess work out of the equation for our customers.
This year’s sale offering has exceeded the goals we have set for our program. They are uniform in the makeup regardless of breed percentage. They are thick, long spined, easy fleshing, and exceptional on their feet and legs. This group of bulls were weaned in early September, took to the bunk quickly, and have been the best gaining set we have had to date despite the extreme changes in weather patterns throughout the fall. Disposition is a high priority for us and is a hard line keep/cull factor within our program. This set of bulls is very quiet and handle with ease. They are being developed on a high fiber, roughage based ration and are given plenty of space to exercise. Our natural calves are developed on rugged pastures without supplementation and came home with excellent weaning weights.
Our embryo transfer program continues to be a significant focus, allowing us to expedite the most productive genetics within our herd and continue to utilize some of our strongest cow families throughout our program’s history. You will find several groups of impressive flushmate brothers in this sale line up. Their female siblings are equally impressive in our replacement pen. Our embryo calves are handled with the best care from calving to weaning by Brett Stevens and we are thankful to work with a cooperator that places such a high level of care in place with his herd. At weaning the ET calves are brought to the ranch, integrated with the natural calves, and then all managed together.
We invite you to give us a call of stop by the ranch prior to the sale to view the bulls and visit with us about your program’s needs. The cow herd is also available for viewing at any time if you would like to see our operation in its entirety. We are looking forward to seeing you on February 24th at the ranch, northeast of Pierre, SD.

Because we run multi-sire pastures, we DNA sire verify all calves. Some lots have also been DNA dam verified.
Any animal with “ET” at the end of it’s name is the result of embryo transfer.
We have listed what we feel are the most important EPDs for our customers, without overwhelming you with data. You are welcome to look up each bull’s full line-up of EPDs by using the Animal Search feature at Gelbvieh.org.
Any bull with “GE EPDs” listed means the EPDs have been enhanced with genomic information through DNA testing.

EPD Definitions:
Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published.
Maternal traits
Calving ease direct (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.
Milk (Milk): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.
Calving ease maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s first-calving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic predisposition to calve unassisted as heifers.
Heifer pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group. 30-month pregnancy (Pg30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.
Actual weight of bull at birth. BWs for ET bulls are not used as part of their data per AGA.
Weaning weight adjusted to 205 days.
Age of the mother at the time bull was born.
Scrotal circumference (SC): Predicts the difference, in centimeters, of scrotal circumference of an animal’s male offspring at yearling compared to the SC of other animals’ male offspring.
Growth traits
Birth weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.
Weaning weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning. Yearling weight (YW): Predicts the expected difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling.
Carcass traits
Yield grade (YG): Differences in yield grade score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.
Carcass weight (CW): Differences in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.
Ribeye area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.
Marbling (MARB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.
The animal’s breed classification and percentage Gelbvieh.
The animal’s birth weight. All lots are yearling bulls.
The animal’s registration number. Any “Pending” registrations will be updated on sale day.
The bull’s coat color is displayed here.
• (T) = By DNA Test; (P) = By Pedigree
• Homo Black means the bull is homozygous black by DNA test (all calves should be black).
• Hetero Black means the bull is heterozygous black by DNA test (bull carries both red and black genes; calves could be red if dam also carries and passes on red gene).
• All red bulls carry two red genes and bull will pass one red gene to all calves.
The bull’s polled/horned/scurred status is displayed below the coat color row.
• (T) = By DNA Test; (P) = By Pedigree
• Homo Polled means the bull is homozygous polled by DNA test (all calves should be polled).
• Hetero Polled means the bull is heterozygous polled by DNA test (bull carries both a polled gene and a horned gene; calves could have horns if dam also carries and passes on horn gene).
Efficiency traits
Dry matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative, or lesser value, is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A.
Indexes
Indexes are tools that allow producers to select for several EPDs at once, making selections more efficient than selecting on one trait at a time. Indexes weigh traits based on their importance to a producer’s bottom line by using a trait’s economic and genetic value. Indexes are a good way to put selection emphasis on traits that are economically relevant.
Total maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD.
FPI™ which stands for feeder profit index: An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease.
GE EPDs • What an incredible sire group to start the catalog with. The Reform sired cattle offer an abundance of fleshing ability, natural thickness, and depth. 4526M is one best balanced animals we have raised. He combines length of body and thickness of top with extra mass and is as sure footed as you can make one. His dam is a moderate framed female out of SAV Reign and a full ET sister to BABR 7062T. 0236K is an easy keeper that kept a tight calving interval in her first year of production. The S A V Reign cattle are some of our favorite up and coming females in production. 4526M’s pedigree is loaded with highly productive females that find their way to the top of the replacement pen annually. He ranks in the top 15% for STAY and top 25% for MARB. Retaining ½ semen interest.
GE EPDs • These two full ET brothers have done nothing but impress throughout their lives. They are both clean made, long spined, soggy middled bulls that offer added muscle mass and fleshing ability in a high percent Gelbvieh package making them versatile in many pasture scenarios. Their donor dam BEA 3127A is our lead donor and still working hard at 12 years of age. She consistently produces sale topping genetics and AI sires with both her natural and ET calves. We have a heavy influence from this female within our herd and will continue to utilize her and her progeny through AI and ET. (A maternal brother is the AI sire for Lots 5 & 6). The Reform sired cattle are impressive from the start but continue to impress us from every growth stage. Retaining ½ semen interest on Lots 2 & 3.

He is built to cover large pastures with a stout skeletal structure and big foot. This bull has been one we studied closely throughout the year and he has not disappointed us yet. His dam and grand dam are females we selected from Jim’s Dispersal. The 3147A female offers added cow power with her 10 calves offering an average WW of 730 lbs. 2101J is following in her footsteps raising front pasture kind and maintaining a solid calving interval.
We had the opportunity to see Big Energy as a coming two year old. One of the most impressive things about him, besides the disposition, was the length of spine and his ability to travel with ease. 4538M is a higher percentage Balancer bull with added calving ease and a light birth weight. He is smooth in his shoulder, clean sheathed, and his tail head sits flush out of his hip. He is well balanced and thick made and easy to handle.

GE EPDs • 4505M is the only son of BABR Remedy we had this year. The rest of the sire group is in the replacement heifer pen and they are the type of females a producer would like to fill an entire pen with. They are loaded with natural rib shape and fleshing ability. 4505M is soggy middled without giving up length of body. He is thick from front to back and is loose structured giving him plenty of room for added development. This is a bull that will add pounds to a calf crop
an actual WW of 768 lbs with no additional
GE EPDs • 400M is a herd bull in the making that will be easy to spot on sale day. He is rugged in his design, deep sided, travels with ease and is massive in his skeletal make up. These are the last of the DLW 321A embryos we have left, and this is a cow family that is still influencing herds within the breed today. 321A has a current progeny count of 44 head and we were fortunate to have some daughters within this round of implants to continue this cow line. 400M offers added growth and performance without sacrificing a maternal look. Retaining ½ semen interest.
GE EPDs • Night Shift is a new AI sire we selected for an outcross to our herd bull line up. 4524M is out of a first calf heifer and she did an outstanding job raising this herd bull prospect. She is a maternal sister to BABR Reform 1302H (sire of Lots 1-4 and grandsire of Lots 5-6). He offers added length of spine and is thick made from front to back. He has angular and clean lines with a large foot to carry him. 4524M combines a big birth to weaning spread and has gained well since weaning. He ranks in the top 4% for STAY, 15% for CW, 25% CED and 35% for BW, CREA & MARB.

Lot 13 • GE EPDs • Owen refers to Lot 13 as “Beast Mode” because that is exactly what he is. 4501M is sired by S A V Jesse James who is a S A V Renovation son, which were genetics we wanted to add to our female line up. The daughters are beautifully constructed, and we can’t wait to get them into production. 4501M is performance driven with added frame, length, muscle mass and scrotal. He is impressive in person and on paper ranking in the top 4% for YW and TM, the top 10% for WW & SC, top 15% for MARB, FPI & EPI, and 25% for Milk. He is also our highest gaining bull in the offering. His dam BABR 8240F is also the dam of BABR Remedy 1307H (sire of Lot 5) and Lot 14 from our 2024 Bull Sale (high selling lot). She is an outstanding producer, and we will be adding her to our flush group this spring. GE EPDs • We were looking for a bull to utilize on heifers that didn’t sacrifice growth and could add some carcass value to our herd. We only bred a handful of them but are pleased with the Polaris progeny. 4523M could be the soggiest, softest middled bull in the offering. He does not give up length of body or thickness over his top and combines a big birth to weaning spread. He ranks in the top 2% for MARB, 4% for Milk, 10% for FPI, 15% for BW & STAY and 25% for TM & CW. His dam was a first calf heifer and has set the bar high for future production. Retaining ½ semen interest.
LOT 18 • Over the years we have strived to add the most maternal Angus genetics to our breeding program, whether that be selecting an AI sire to create Balancer genetics or in females to add to our program. This year we are offering a couple of top end Angus bulls for your evaluation. 4901M is the result of combining two proven programs, he is thick made and offers an abundance of natural rib shape and muscle mass. His dam is the result of a set of embryos purchased from Coleman Angus and we feel that her productive future is an exciting one. We retained her full ET brother to use on our own heifers and the daughters are the front pasture kind. Like the Balancer counter part 4901M will add carcass traits without giving up the maternal cow power we like to see in our herd. He offers a big birth to weaning spread, and we feel he will complement continental cattle well adding calving ease and maintaining growth and performance.
LOT 19 • 4902M is a long bodied, moderate framed, sound constructed heifer bull candidate with the added look and eye appeal wanted order buyers. He is long fronted and angular made and is built to cover large pastures and rough terrain. He ranks in the top 1% for Claw, 3% for HS, 4% PAP, 15% for BW & CED, 20% for Hoof Angle and 25% for $Energy. 4902Mis a true calving ease sire backed by some of the most maternal cattle in the cattle business. GE EPDs • 4521M is a bull that offers added rib shape and volume without giving up muscle mass and thickness. We selected his sire to utilize on heifers and a select set of mature cows to create higher percentage Gelbvieh cattle. His dam C614 is entering our donor program this year. We think very highly of our BEA Closer sired females as they are some of the most versatile and consistent producing cows in our herd. 2025 Cattle Market Projections: Opportunities for Producers
As we step into 2025, the cattle market presents an array of opportunities that producers, especially in South Dakota, the Upper Midwest, and beyond, can leverage to ensure a successful year. Tightening cattle supplies and solid beef demand are setting the tone for what could be a pivotal year for profitability.
A Decline in Beef Production
The USDA predicts a significant dip in U.S. beef production for 2025, with an estimated total of 25.12 billion pounds—a 6% drop compared to last year. This decline, driven by smaller herds and higher input costs, also means reduced beef availability. Per capita consumption is expected to shrink to 55.6 pounds—the lowest in a decade. (Source: USDA Economic Research Service)
Rising Prices: A Silver Lining
With reduced supply, prices are expected to rise across all cattle categories, creating opportunities for producers to benefit:
• Fed Steers: Prices in the 5-area marketing region are projected to average $188.00 per hundredweight (cwt), up 3% from last year. (Source: USDA)
• Feeder Steers: Regional markets, including South Dakota, are looking at prices for 750-800 pound steers averaging $259.00 per cwt. (Source: USDA)
• Cull Cows: These are forecasted to bring $125.00 per cwt, a 5% increase from 2024. (Source: USDA)
For ranchers, this is an opportunity to secure higher returns by investing in high-quality bulls that can enhance herd genetics and meet market demands for performance and efficiency.
What It Means for the Upper Midwest
Cattle producers in South Dakota and surrounding states are uniquely positioned to thrive. With strong local feeder markets and top-tier genetics producers can secure competitive prices and maintain profitability. The demand for efficient, high-performing cattle is only increasing, making it a great time to focus on herd improvement.
Steps for Success in 2025
To make the most of this year’s market, consider these strategies:
• Focus on Genetics: Investing in topnotch genetics can improve your herd’s efficiency and marketability.
• Plan Ahead: Use tools like forward contracts and risk management strategies to lock in favorable prices.
• Think Sustainability: Practices that conserve resources and improve resilience against weather challenges are increasingly valued by consumers and buyers.
Looking Ahead
The opportunities for 2025 are numerous for ranchers who are proactive and well-prepared. Producers in South Dakota and across the Midwest are at the heart of a dynamic cattle industry, and Beastrom Ranch is proud to support your efforts with proven genetics and trusted expertise. Here’s to a successful year for ranchers everywhere.
