Greetings Fellow Cattlemen -

What a time to be in the cattle business. In the last 5 years, cow calf producers like yourself have been through the book of Job for beyond our control events. Floods, epic national covering droughts, black swan events and a global pandemic that took the beef supply chain to its knees. Coincidentally, we have seen many producers exit the industry and most have had to downsize their cowherd due to environmental pressures and it has made the smallest cow herd many of us have ever seen and many charts show it being the smallest cow herd we will ever see, paralleling numbers of the all time low.

Those that have adapted, evolved, preserved and been resilient stand today and those that have stayed true have prospered because of it. It’s always darkest before the light and we have seen unprecedented cattle prices, throughout all sectors and classes this year. From $4.00 lightweight cattle to $2.00 fat cattle, we have seen record prices like never before and with heifer retention numbers being down with larger than estimated heifers on feed, many believe we have not seen the top and will not for a few calf crops until the American cow herd is rebuilt. Good prices are here and here to stay. Those that control the factory, the cow herd that starts and feeds the beef supply chain, are in the drivers seat.

All producers will benefit from a bullish and robust market, but it is cyclical and the time to plan for the future is now. These bulls will sire calves that will enter the supply in 2026-2027 and what that looks like we don’t know but we do know is that these genetics will be worth more than ever before.

We have taken initiative as a family to join forces with some of the most innovative and passionate players in the industry, from conception to consumer in the Sustainable Beef project coming to our hometown in 2025 and conception starts right here with this program. For the first time ever, a producer owned packing plant of scale will be operated right here in the beef state to strengthen a fragmented industry with one word in mind, profitability and more importantly for all sectors of the industry. It all starts right here. This is not only our biggest set of bulls, but also our deepest. We are cattle people in the cattle business and we believe this set of bulls are unrivaled in their structure and soundness, but also their ability to fulfill the supply chain to pass on genetics that get heavy weighing feeder cattle that have a shot at receiving a prime grade and leaving a set of daughters that can raise the same. Those cattle are worth a lot, and we are excited to reward our customer for being apart of this program, this supply chain and this family.

THE STORY BEHIND THE MANTRA

We often get asked from customers about our manta “the most of the best” and the story behind it. When Dayna and I first bought the Rishel herd, we had not owned a registered female before, all our experience was in the commercial cow/calf sector and feedlot industry. I, like many of our customers, was torn between evaluating cattle based on their phenotype and genotype/EPDs. It was a struggle for me.

One day we were sorting replacement heifers in the alley and I had asked Bill how do we go about this with all the pedigrees and data available and still keep them structurally and fundamentally correct and he simply stated, “Make her have the most of the best.” It is by far the most profound and impactful statement I have ever been told and it covers all aspects of life as well.

These cattle look, act and perform the way they do because with that statement that is how they’ve been bred and designed for 40 plus years.

“Most of the best” is not a factual statement, it is a pledge to a strategic and disciplined breeding program that puts it all together with phenotype and genotype. It is not a statement of who and where we are, it is a statement of where were going. It is a journey, not a destination. Sustainable Beef LLC is a rancher-driven and owned beef processing facility proposed for North Platte, Neb. The 500,000 square-foot plant will have the capacity to process about 1,500 cattle per day and is expected to employ 875 workers and have a $1 billion dollar impact on North Platte’s economy. The plant is expected to be operational in early 2025.

The project received a boost when Walmart announced Aug. 31 it would acquire a minority stake in Sustainable Beef and have representation on the board of directors. Walmart’s partnership offers the startup access to its large retail food outlets nationwide. Sustainable Beef also committed to following Walmart’s Position on Antibiotics in Animals, which requires suppliers to adopt and implement the American Veterinary Medical Association Judicious Use Principles of Antimicrobials.

Fall Bull Management

This year we have never developed these fall bulls and made them do more with less. They ran on Sandhill grass from May until September where they were brought in and weighed and ultrasound scanned for carcass data. You will notice throughout the catalog each bull has an actual rib fat number. The average on all bulls was .10 inch of backfat and many are under that. Industry standard for fat cattle is .48 inch of back fat. That is a huge, huge difference. Bulls then went back to grass from September and we brought them home on December 11th when the snow brought them in for one of the worst winters we’ve experienced in a decade.

These bulls are not developed for ego boasting weaning and yearling weights and massive scan numbers, that only hamper longevity and fertility of a bull and add red ink to our customers’ profit. We do not creep feed and they are raised on Sandhill grass and their mother’s milk. That is it. Bill Rishel has always told us this cow herd must be ran like if they took our registered papers and we could still survive. This cow herd does that. These bulls will do that for our customers. Judge them how they are, not what they can be. Have complete faith and confidence that these bulls will hold up and breed more cows than ever before, because they were developed that way.

Cache was found by Bill Rishel coming out of the Green Garden program in Kansas that is known for its functional females, breed leading carcass quality including tenderness and feed efficiency. We saw many daughters of Cache that were on their 4th or 5th calf and were very feminine, easy fleshing, gentle and great uddered and we decided to use him back in the program to make replacement females. His daughters are the keeping kind but his sons are masculine, very efficient and also have breed leading marbling with their sire being in the top 1% of the breed.

Spring Cove Crossfire 26H is the all-time high seller of $125,000, who we partnered with Sitz Angus of Dillon, MT and Triple L Livestock in Bliss, Idaho. We were watching his sire Crossbow closely as we have seen daughters in production and admired them for their femineity, easy fleshing and great udders but we wanted a son with more gas in the tank in weaning and yearling weight and added carcass merit and Crossfire came along and checked all the boxes. Crossfire was stout, good footed, big crested and masculine and super sound. He is a sure shot calving ease bull with 14 herds ratio 99 for birthweight. They are smooth and complete cattle and they scan good as well as his marbling continues to rise with more data and ratio 102 for IMF in 5 herds. His cow family is second to none with his mother being the most powerful and productive cow at Spring Cove and

the grandmother being none other than 442, who resides here at TD Angus and was the mother to our 2022 bull sale’s high seller in T/D Troubadour. 442 has an elite production record of 5BW@94, 5WW@112, 5YW@108 and has kept a consistent calving interval while being flushed of 7@366 days. We have calved his first daughters and they dot our replacement pen for the reason with their femineity, easy demeanor and fleshing ability with a great udder.

One of the last sons to sell out of one of the breed’s elite cows, “163” known in the industry as “Exclusives” mother. She was one of the prettiest cows we’ve ever laid our eyes on and with the “Crossfire” replacement heifers we have, this one will make jaw dropping females. A lot to like her maternally with a top 5% heifer pregnancy. Keep every heifer here.

Fall Born Bulls

Doubt Me Now is doing a phenomenal job as a herd bull at the Most of the Best. He sold in our 2021 sale for $30,000 to good friends and cattleman at McWherter Farms in Jackson, Tennessee and has been used heavily in both our program and theirs. He was selected as the No Doubt son to move on with because he kept the stoutness, good feet and carcass quality that No Doubt did but he is more calving ease, higher heifer pregnancy and a low PAP bull for a better immune system and can work at elevation than his sire. His progeny are fault free and we have had multiple visitors see his heifers in the replacement pen and they are some of the best fronted and smoothest in the pen, they look to be real momma cows. It shouldn’t surprise anybody coming from his cow family and his mother who produced until her 14th birthday with an elite progeny record of 11BW@101, 11WW@103,

11YW@103, 11IMF@101, 11RE@107 with a calving interval of 11@366 days while being flushed and put 6 natural daughters in the replacement pen. We have calved our first daughters and they are some of our favorites with docility, a perfect udder and a sandhill cow look.

Bigger growth son of “Doubt Me Now” with both weaning and yearling weight in the top 10% of the breed and backed it up with ratios of WW@117 and YW@114. 5 of the 6 $Indexes in the top 25% of the breed or better.

Fall Born Bulls

This should be the easiest footnote to write, but it’s coming the hardest. This bull means so much to our family. I have never, I mean never, used a bull that I couldn’t find something I would tweak or change. Exclusive is that bull. These will be some of his last sons to sell here due to his passing this summer. This bull is the epitome of all that is great in Angus genetics and is the most of the best. Our program strives to do it all. Our bulls must sire great long-lasting cows and heavy weighing feeder cattle that have a chance at prime. With the tens of thousands of Angus bulls produced every year, very few can pass that test. Exclusive sold the high selling Fall bull last year to the historic and maternally driven Sitz Angus for $40,000 and another herd bull to Krebs Ranch of Gordon, Ne, all in his first offering. I can confidently tell my customers this bull will improve your bottom line and I’m

proud to offer his sons for your program to do just that. Daughters in production on long bodied, great uddered and great mothers and are starting to make their mark. The proof is in the data with a miraculous 560 herds BW@100, 462 herds for WW@100, 278 herds for YW@100, 157 herds for IMF and RE@100 and 86 herds with daughters in production with a nursing ratio of 101.

This year, the spring bull offering has never been tested to do more with less during one of the worst winters in a decade to boot. You’ll notice each bull has an ultrasound scan box stating their actual data. You will also notice the Rib Fat box, this is expressed in inches and to give you a mean, the industry standard for beef cattle is .48 inch of back fat. This offering average is .18. Doubt Me Now is doing a phenomenal job as a herd bull at the Most of the Best. He sold in our 2021 sale for $30,000 to good friends and cattleman at McWherter Farms in Jackson, Tennessee and has been used heavily in both our program and theirs. He was selected as the No Doubt son to move on with because he kept the stoutness, good feet and carcass quality that No Doubt did but he is more calving ease, higher heifer pregnancy and a low PAP bull for a better immune system and can work at elevation than his sire. The 2020 high selling bull to great customer and more importantly good friend in Grimmuis Cattle Co for $36,000. Tribute was a fan favorite for his tremendous length of body, bold sprung soundness and tremendous picture-perfect front end. Tribute broke every record for Grimmuis Cattle Co for semen production by making an incredible 52,000 units in one year, that’s 1,000 units a week. Unheard of in the Angus breed. Randall Grimmuis told me one time that “The Angus breed needs this bull and they don’t even know it yet.” By his first calf crop I would say that he is correct. His lead off son, T/D Troubadour 159 was the $56,000 high selling son last year and his full brother will highlight this years sale. Tribute not only is a phenotypic specimen but we also wanted to inject the historic and legendary Ruby of Tiffany cow family back into the program. He is backed by eight

Cache was found by Bill Rishel coming out of the Green Garden program in Kansas that is known for its functional females, breed leading carcass quality including tenderness and feed efficiency. We saw many daughters of Cache that were on their 4th or 5th calf and were very feminine, easy fleshing, gentle and great uddered and we decided to use him back in the program to make replacement females. His daughters are the keeping kind but his sons are masculine, very efficient and also have breed leading marbling with their sire being in the top 1% of the breed.

We have a limited offering of replacement heifers this year because of such high demand for quality and uniform groups sired by our bulls. More importantly, many replacement heifers that we are usually offered on an annual basis were not offered for sale by our customers because we strongly advised them if they had the feed that they needed to hold onto them and retain all the heifers they could. It is no secret this cow market is in a drastic decline, with a 2% decrease since last year and we now have the lowest numbers of cows in production that has ever been recorded, levels never seen before. Going forward the elite Angus female that can sire heavy weighing calves that have a chance at hitting a prime grade and will also put replacements in the pen will never be more valuable. These commercial heifers will do just that. TD Angus and it’s crew will also come AI breed these heifers free of charge upon purchase.

Like generations before, Eric and Andrew looked for every opportunity to build and buy. They added farming to the mix and most recently built a grow yard for another element of control in cattle marketing. The only way to keep tradition alive, they figure, is to allow it to change and evolve with a competitive edge. After all, it’s competition that drove Henry and JD to move the cow herd to an Angus base decades ago.

“In this country, you just have to have cows that can do it themselves,” Andrew says, nodding across the wide, Wyoming prairie of big grasslands cut by deep coulees and rocky enclaves. “If she has bad feet, she’s not going to travel to water, she’s not going to travel to cake or mineral, which means she’s more likely to slough a calf or short him on nutrition. It just doesn’t work.” He studies their performance records, willing the cows into a competition with one another.

Andrew points to one definitive training tool that helped the ranch grow to support several families.”The use of technology is really what inspires me to keep moving forward, because you can actually measure progress on ranches now,” Andrew says. From range conditions to water use to breeding, feeding, carcass and nutrition, the technology offers a score board of progress.

About six years ago, the family got curious about how competitive their beef could be on the plate, too. They started ultra-sounding potential replacement heifers to gain a clearer picture of marbling ability and ribeye size and soon moved to scanning every heifer on the place. Sorting ensures every keeper has the targeted 1.1 square inches of ribeye per 100 pounds of body weight and an intramuscular fat (IMF) score over 3.5 – the threshold for Choice marbling. This year, they invested in genomic testing for each heifer, with an even-more detailed. analysis of maternal, carcass and performance traits. Now they know exactly what the scorecard will show before they step into the ring.

“That’s the fine-tuning,” Andrew says. After sorting phenotypically for the top 500, they used the genetic data to sort by ribeye size, IMF score and weight. That focus pays off. The Bootheel 7 steers handily won the Nebraska-based TD Angus Feed Test “Highest CAB Percentage” category two years in a row with pens at 64% Feed Test “Highest CAB Percentage” category two years in a row with pens at 64% and 65% CAB and 100% Choice or higher. They topped the Percentage Prime category, too.

Topping two out of five categories was an honor, a brief moment to glance at the scoreboard and be proud to see their name in lights. “But we didn’t win ’em all; that means we still have a lot of work to do,” Eric says.
