20th Annual Sale Saturday, March 15, 2025 1 p.m. CDT • At the Farm
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 20th Annual Red Hill “More Than a Bull” Sale. We are thankful for all our customers and especially proud that many are REPEAT customers. We are also grateful for those who have shown interest and followed our breeding program through the years.
Our primary goal at Red Hill is to provide practical breeding stock to improve the profitability of our commercial customers’ cattle operations.
At Red Hill, we have always developed bulls for optimal structural soundness and longevity. Our bulls are developed slowly on a high roughage ration to make them fit and trim athletes. We take the extra time and management to develop these bulls to offer a better product to our customers.
Since our first sale, Red Hill has provided the most meaningful EPDs and Indexes in the industry. In addition to breed association data, our herd is enrolled in the “$Profit Share” Genetic Evaluation. This program offers a complete suite of EPDs and the most meaningful Indexes in the beef industry. The $Profit Indexes will be used for making selection decisions in the Red Hill program, and we encourage our commercial producers to do likewise.
A major reward of the seedstock business is the opportunity to enjoy the friendship and fellowship of our customers and fellow breeders. Visitors are always welcome to visit our farm to study our cattle, records and production system. After reviewing the catalog, please contact us with any questions.

RETAINED
Red Hill Farms retains a 1/2 semen interest in all bulls selling. We are selling 100% possession and 100% salvage or resale value. This gives Red HIll Farms the option to collect, use and market semen from the bull and does not restrict the buyer from doing the same.
VETERINARIAN: Roger Thomas, DVM, Thomas and England Veterinary Services, (270-563-0011). Contact Dr. Thomas for any questions regarding Red Hill Farms’ herd health or breeding soundness exams of the sale bulls.
FERTILITY/DISPOSITION GUARANTEE: We guarantee the fertility and disposition of every bull selling. All bulls sell with a breeding soundness exam (BSE) certificate. Each bull is guaranteed to be a satisfactory breeder; assuming the buyer provides acceptable nutrition, health and management.
• If a bull proves to be a non-breeder, the buyer must contact Bart Jones or Sarah Jones on or before January 15, 2026, to make a claim.
• Red Hill Farms reserves the right to request a statement from a veterinarian and/or the bull being returned to Red Hill Farms at the buyer’s expense.
• If proper claim is made, the buyer will be given full credit if the bull is returned, OR full credit minus salvage value if the bull was sold with the credit to be used in a future Red Hill Farms sale.
GENOMIC ENHANCED EPDS: Bulls that have breed genomic enhanced EPDs are designated in the catalog with a logo. Most of the bulls selling have been genomically enhanced. DNA markers provide molecular breeding values which are used to enhance the EPDs and improve the accuracy of the EPDs. This is particularly important because the EPDs on these bulls are much more accurate than prior to the use of these DNA values. These enhanced EPDs now have the same meaning as data for bulls that have several progeny records.
$PROFIT GENOMIC ENHANCED INDEXES: All $Profit Indexes in this catalog have been enhanced with Zoetis HD50K genomic testing.
SALE PROCEDURES: We will conduct a “Farmers’ Auction” to sell each individual lot. Cattle sell in catalog order. Each animal has a base price listed in the catalog. When it is time to sell a particular animal, we will ask those interested to hold up their buyer number. If only one number is in the air, the animal will be sold at the base price to that individual. If there are multiple numbers in the air, we will gradually raise the price until one number remains. If there is a tie (last two bidders drop out at the same time), the bid is given to the buyer with the lower buyer number. The other bidder may raise the bid by $250 if he wishes to stay in the auction. We intend for this to be a simple, low-pressure sale for the benefit of all involved.
HEALTH: Please contact us with any health questions.

PERSONAL INJURY: All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk and Red Hill Farms, its employees, and all other persons connected with the management of the sale, assume no liability, legal or otherwise.
COYOTE HILLS FARM (CCCH) – Coyote Hills is owned by the Dal Clark Family, Scottsville, KY. The Clark family has been in the Red Angus business since 2006. The Coyote Hills cattle are heavily influenced by Buffalo Creek and Red Hill genetics.
BUFFALO CREEK RED ANGUS (BUF) – The name Buffalo Creek is forever synonymous with quality Red Angus cattle. After the Buffalo Creek dispersal, Gini Chase asked if we would manage some of her personal cows. We were excited she would send these cows to Red Hill. We enjoy working with Gini, as it is always good to get wisdom from a master breeder. Gini has been a great supporter of our program!
ROGERS CATTLE COMPANY (RCC) – Rogers Cattle Company, LLC started in 2001 as a diversified pasture-based livestock operation and is owned by Johnny and Sharon Rogers. Their herd consists primarily of fall calving Red Angus cows which are mated to Red Angus bulls. Johnny and Sharon strive to produce cattle that thrive on intensively grazed fescue based pastures, as well as have great maternal ability, grow well and have excellent carcass merit.
HARDROCK BEEF CATTLE (HBC) – Hardrock Beef Cattle was started by Ronnie and Donna Holman on the family farm in the western piedmont of North Carolina. Both Ronnie’s father and son are integral participants in the cattle management. Today the herd is comprised of Red Angus and red SimAngus cattle. Hardrock Beef Cattle operates on a Kentucky 31 based forage system.
INC (TUL) – Mike Tulloch has been involved in beef agribusiness for most of his life. He currently operates Tulloch Agriculture in Northern Ontario, Canada, just beyond the Upper Peninsula of the State of Michigan. Mike raises red and black SimAngus seedstock and commercial cattle. He is also a partner of a beef feedlot (finishing 2,000 head per year) and a new processing facility selling beef and pork products. Therefore, his cattle herd is developed with an emphasis on rapid growth, feed conversion, and carcass merit.
FRAME SCORES: Frame size in cattle is an extremely important trait, and deciding on the frame size needed in the next herd bull should be one of the major criteria for selection. Unfortunately, frame scoring is NOT an exact science. If cattle are on halter and easy to handle, frame scoring can be quite repeatable. However, when measuring frame score in the chute while collecting other yearling data, the measurements are not as repeatable as desired. We have decided to break the frame scores into thirds for the bulls this year. For example, a 4 frame score would have been between 4.33 and 4.66 in the past while a 4 - would have been between 4.0 and 4.33 and a 4 + would have been between 4.67 and 4.99. Stated another way a 4 – is a low 4, 4 is an average 4 and 4 + is a high 4.
ProS ..... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).
HB ....... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).
GM....... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the post-weaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).
CED ...... Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-yearold dams. (Percent/High Value)
BW....... Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)
WW ...... Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. (Pounds/High Value)
YW....... Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value)
ADG...... Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value)
DMI ...... Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low Value)
MILK .... Milk predicts differences in weaning weight attributed to the milking ability of the animal’s daughters. (Pounds/High Value)
ME ....... Maintenance Energy predicts the difference in maintence energy requirements. (Mcal per Month/ Low Value)
HPG...... Heifer Pregnancy predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to conceive and calve at 2 years of age following exposure to breeding. (Percent/High Value)
CEM ..... Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value)
STAY..... Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value)
MARB ... Marbling predicts differences in marbling score – amount of intramuscular fat measured at the 13th rib. (Marbling Score Units/High Value)
YG ....... Yield Grade predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade, which is calculated using CW, REA and Fat. (Yield Grade Units/Low Value)
CW....... Carcass Weight predicts differences in actual hot carcass weight. (Pounds/High Value)
REA ...... Ribeye Area predicts differences in square inches of ribeye area measured at the 13th rib. (Square Inches/High Value)
FAT ...... Fat predicts differences in the depth of backfat measured between the 12th and 13th ribs. (Inches/Low Value)

E71 combines two of the most proven Red Hill maternal bulls – RedHill T189 Medal 176A and RedHill Julian 84S. We have flushed E71 twice, and she has proven to be an excellent donor while breeding up to stay in the same calving season. E71 is moderate and low maintenance but produces calves that consistently outperform their contemporaries. We believe E71 has the suite of traits needed to make functional, forage-based cattle that are very productive on reduced inputs. She has produced a top end bull in the 2023 and 2024 sales going to Lick Skillet (TN) and Pedigo (KY). Sons sell as LOTS 4-9.

There is good reason this program is going to be called Cross-TY. Ty Jones is involved in everything we do at Red Hill, and he is adventurous. He has heard so much positive family discussion about crossbreeding and hybrid vigor that he is totally sold on providing Red Hill customers with the opportunity to reap the economic advantages gained from crossbreeding.
Ty has also observed the tremendous performance advantages of crossbred pigs compared to purebreds. We will continue to identify cattle from other breeds that adapt to the fescue environment and management scheme at Red Hill. The reason for these experimental efforts is to identify breeds that can be used to provide more opportunities to increase the profitability of our customers. These new genetics are likely to be made available as hybrids or composites; however, we will not rule out the use of one or two other pure breeds in the future.

$ INDEXES: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
AL-PURPOSE INDEX (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis.
TERMINAL INDEX (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold on a carcass grid basis.
USING API AND TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements, use API. If not, then TI. Just as with EPDs, focus on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring $140 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a $90 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over four years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes, visit www.simmental.org.

298L is the yearling bull that we choose to clean-up with this fall. His mother, 236J, is a Lead Time daughter that has calved again as a three-year-old with another good bull calf. Channel was an outcross bull from the Schurrtop Charolais that we choose to use to make good females with good udders. 298L is soft made and thick, the Channel heifers look like they will leave an impact on the Red Hill program.

333L is fast growing, balanced, and structurally correct. His mother, 601, is an ideal Charolais cow who is moderate, easy fleshing, and strives in our fescue environment. 333L should sire value added feeder calves that should be profitable at all levels of the beef industry. We have retained 3 heifers out of this flush and all have a promising future in the Red Hill Program.
“It is hard to think of another action that would increase efficiency industrywide more than implementing
crossbreeding programs in straight-bred commercial herds.”

At Red Hill Farms, cows are scored annually for Claw Shape and Foot Angle. Young bulls and heifers are scored as yearlings. All cattle with unacceptable foot scores are no longer used for seedstock production.
Calves are evaluated and scored for docility at weaning and yearling. All cattle with scores of 3 or greater are culled.
1 – Calm: Content with human interaction
2 – Okay: Moves away as a person approaches
3 – Discontent: Good for big range country
4 – Nervous: Culled
5 – Aggressive: Culled
“Worked calves yesterday from 84S, 28U and the bull we bought from you last fall. They’re so calm that we had to push them in the chute. Interesting was that there were two AI calves from other [non-Red Hill] bulls that were noticeably different in disposition as we handled them.”
One of the most exciting developments for Red Hill Farms and our commercial bull customers is the introduction of the INHERIT commercial heifer evaluation program from Zoetis. This program provides commercial producers the opportunity to genomically test heifers and get the same EPDs and Indexes as we get on our seedstock. In addition to providing a quantitative selection tool for the heifers, it also provides the opportunity to use the data to aid in deciding relative emphasis on traits and Indexes to use in Bull Selection.
When submitting, please use the Dealer Code “RED HILL” to be eligible for the Red Hill Bull Rebate.
