Calvo Family Red Angus Fall Production Female Sale
Dear Friends and Cattlemen,
We want to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to look at our program and the genetics we have to offer. We have dedicated our lives to the red angus breed and to the type of cow that works for the commercial cattlemen.
The females in this offering stand out for their consistency, type, and uniformity. Through years of breeding experience, we've come to understand the traits that define the ideal cow. While it's easy to get caught up in the latest EPDs or newest trends, our focus remains on the cow herself and how she performs in the real world. We breed for a cow that is structurally sound, has excellent udder and foot quality, possesses outstanding fleshing ability, and consistently breeds back each year. Above all, she should have a chiselfronted appearance and embody the grace and femininity of a true cow.
We are very excited about the females in this offering, and invite you to the ranch to see them anytime. We’re happy to show you around the ranch, and give you a tour of the cowherd and the bulls that will be offered on our annual February bull sale.
We understand that the holiday season is a busy time for everyone, and we appreciate your continued support and interest in our program. We look forward to visiting with you about our female offering and wish you and your families a joyful and prosperous holiday season.
God Bless,
The Calvo Family

Placing selection pressure on traits that will have a direct impact on your marketed product (weaned calves, yearlings, carcasses sold in the meat) can certainly increase your revenue on a per-calf basis. However, in order to achieve the higher goal of increased revenue per cow exposed, selection pressure must be placed on cowherd-building traits.
Red Angus' commitment to Total Herd Reporting allows for the measurement of each female’s lifetime production history; from being exposed to breeding as a yearling, to measuring females’ productive lifespan. Implementing these tools into your selection decisions will have a long-term impact on your operation’s profitability.
Calving Ease Direct (CED) - predicts the probability of calves being born unassisted out of 2-year-old heifers. Producers want live calvesborn unassisted. Selecting on actual birth weight is flawed; it is influenced by non-genetic factors such as nutrition and weather (ambient emperature). While BW EPD removes these non-genetic factors, Red Angus’ CED EPD is the best predictor of calving ease. The CED EPD includes variation in BW plus other influential genetic factors such as gestation length, calf shape, etc.
Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. While puberty is a prerequisite, many factors influence pregnancy rate. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers a tool which selects for what is economically relevant to ranchers - pregnant heifers.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM) - predicts the probability of a given animal's daughters calving unassisted at two years of age.
Replacement heifers should be able to calve on their own. Red Angus' CEM EPD offers the industry's most reliable prediction to address that concern. It includes not only the predisposition for a female to calve unassisted, but also her contribution to her calf's traits (birth weight, calf shape, etc.) that make it more likely to be born unassisted.
Maintenance Energy (ME) - predicts differences in daughters’ maintenance energy requirements and is expressed in Mcal/Month. Recognizing that 70% of cowherd feed costs are burned up in maintaining weight and condition, Red Angus’ ME EPD allows for the selection of bulls whose daughters will require less feed; thus, reducing cowherd expenses. Include selection pressure for ME EPD to ensure feed costs don’t get out of line when selection is made for greater performance and production.
Dry Matter Intake (DMI) - predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. (Pounds/Low value)
There is a Difference…
You will find that there is truly a difference in the type of bulls we use in our program. We breed cattle based on how they perform in the real world and are “maternally focused and profit driven”. We pay close attention to each cow family and how they perform against one another. We structure our breeding program off balance, use multiple-trait selection, and understand the importance of having the right type of cow that thrives in a forage-based environment.
“A premier, calving-ease herd.”

Leading off our December female sale with undeniably some of the best females we have put together. If you take a look at lot one and two, you’ll notice both are out of daughters of Calvo Forager 57E. We have stated since the beginning that Forager is the female making kind; and you can see that follow suit in lots one and two. It would be hard to find another pair of females that combine power and elegance as well as L902 & 515L do. Absolutely true brood cows in the making. Ultrasound results suggest a March 20th calving date.
CALVO TINA 515L
The most unique thing about lots one and two is that even though their sires are from two completely different programs, they are so similar in their type and kind simply because of the females they’re out of. I think that speaks volumes about our program, and what these females can do for you. Another thing to note about these females is how they were developed – these females have been summered out in river bottoms and mountain pastures. We brought them in 30 days ago to get them ready for the sale and they are by no means “fat & shiny”. What you see with these females is what you get – and they’re going to look this way all year long. Ultrasound results suggest a March 25th calving date.
580L is a female that took a lot for us to offer on the sale. OCC Vanessa 875C is a pinnacle female in our program, and one we have flushed several times. Also take note of 875C’s dam on page 3 of this catalog. We decided to bring DVO Royal Touch into our program after purchasing one of his sons, DVO Masterplan 722H. We love our Masterplan daughters and the females behind these DVO bulls are truly what makes them special. We flushed Royal Touch to several of our donors, and this is the first look of what’s to come. Calvo Vanessa 580L is a true powerhouse female. Ultrasound results suggest an April 1st calving date,

On the bottom side of L900’s pedigree, you’ll notice the combination of Redhill Julian 84S and OCC Easy Red 809W. This is such a unique individual that combines some of the very best cows on the ranch and speaks volumes as to why we keep so many black hided females on the place. L914 stems back to a matriarch to our program – OCC Vanessa 838U. Who is one of the original OCC Headliner 661H daughters we acquired. 838U passed away this spring at 16 years of age. If you want to purchase a female that checks all the boxes – then look no further than L914. Ultrasound results suggest a March 28th calving date.
