Back by popular demand: Bulls Will Sell in Catalog Order!!!! In order to make life easier for you, we are going to sell bulls in the same order they’re printed in the catalog. Please do not read anything into the sale order itself. The order is dependent on who would pen with whom (and not fight!) and how the bulls fit on a page with any available pictures. It is not meant to imply that any one bull is better than another! Heifers will NOT go through the ring. They’ll be penned on site but sell by video. We are pleased to again broadcast the Kniebel Cattle Co. and Downey Ranch, Inc. Production Sale “live” over the Internet. AGAIN THIS YEAR: Proxy Bidding Available. This means you can put in your maximum bid ahead of the sale at your convenience. Then on sale day, the computer bids for you. NO ONE, not even DVAuction, knows what that your max is. If something happens to your connection or you can’t be in front of the computer, your bidding still gets done for you. Example—You put in a proxy for $5000 on Lot 12. An opposing bidder drops out at $3700. You own Lot 12 for $3800. First Time Users: 1. Visit the DVAuction web site at www.dvauction.com 2. Click on the Register Tab. 3. Complete Registration and Apply to bid at the Kniebel and Downey Production Sale. DVAuction will contact your bank to verify information. DVAuction will then contact you to let you know that you have been approved to bid and buy at the sale “live” from your computer at home. After the sale: 1. Contact Kniebel and Downey to make arrangements for payment. 2. Contact Kniebel and Downey for delivery or pickup of your purchases. Note: You must have high speed internet access (DSL, T-1, or Broadband) to be able to bid during the sale. Any questions: Contact Dan with DVAuction at (402)-649-3172 or e-mail: dbroz@dvauction.com Or contact Tami with DVAuction at (308) 870-3661 or e-mail: tmcintosh@dvauction.com We recommend that you register by Oct. 31, 2012 for on-line bidding. Every attempt will be made to complete your application even if it is on sale day. Questions? Call us or DV Auction for more information.

Not comfortable with the internet or afraid you’ll be busy in the field? We have purchased many bulls for customers sight-unseen and got them for less than the prearranged limit with 100% satisfaction. We’ll discuss your needs, figure out the best purchasing system and match up the bulls that will suit you best. Just visit with us before the sale and we’ll work together to find the best option for you. At the end of the day, we’re not happy until you’re happy.

Live Calf Guarantee Calving heifers: * Don’t like to?! * Don’t want to?! * Hate snowstorms?!

* Don’t have time to?!

For a fee, we will keep them and calve them out. After your last heifer calves, we will deliver pairs to you. In the unlikely event that we should lose a calf, we will offer a like replacement. If a suitable replacement is unavailable, we will offer a full refund (purchase price + calve out fee). Please note: we can not offer live calf guarantees on heifers taken home to calve.

-Calve out fee with live-calf guarantee: $275/head,

due sale day.

Example: You purchase a pen of 3 heifers and elect to have us calve them out. You pay gavel price plus $825 on sale day. Pairs will be available after the last heifer has calved.

Trucking arrangements will be handled individually at cost.

We know it’s hard to remember precipitation, but think back to 2009-’10 & 2010-’11!

Bull Wintering Program Don’t need your bull until spring? If you elect to, we will keep your new bull purchase until April 15. Fees for this service are designed to cover “room & board” along with insurance (4% of purchase price) to protect your valuable investment. Trucking follows policy on P. 2. Should the bull not be serviceable on April 15, we will replace the bull with one of like kind & quality. If a suitable replacement is not available, we will refund purchase price + “room & board” fee.

-Bull Wintering Program: $300 + 4% of purchase price,

due sale day.

Example: You purchase 1 bull at $3500. You pay $3500 + $300 + $140 = $3940 due sale day.

Feedlot Options—Adding more $$$ to your bottom line Placing calves on feed Would you like to feed some of your calves out? CattleFax data shows retaining ownership is more profitable than selling calves 95% of the time. We have several options available that let you get your feet wet.

x x

Kniebel Farms Feedlot—Personal environment under our direct supervision. Will take as few as 5 head. Small lots will be co-mingled, larger groups will have their own pen. Individual carcass and gain data will be provided. Commercial Feedlot recommendations—With our contacts in the industry, we can help you find a feedlot that suits your cattle’s needs.

Turning cull heifers into profit centers Do you want to shorten your breeding (and calving!) season but not stand the usual financial hit on open heifers? Consider feeding them with us. You can get carcass data, shorten your breeding & calving seasons, select for fertility and make more money all at the same time. Talk to us for more details.

Our Herd Health Programs x x x x

Calves are vaccinated going to grass (at 2 months down to a few weeks of age) with MLV respiratory and 7-way blackleg. We do not worm going to grass, instead we wait until the end of June and use Safeguard in the mineral to catch the worms they may have picked up. The calves are given 2 rounds of respiratory complex vaccine, a pastuerella and another 7-way blackleg around weaning. They are also dewormed with an ivermectin product to clean up any late summer infestation. Steers will be given a Synovex implant at this time, however replacement heifers are never implanted. Cows are pregged when we can, sometimes before they move to stubble fields but usually after. They receive a 7-way booster and a staybred vaccine. They also receive either Cattlemaster or Virashield and are poured with an ivermectin product. Neither ranch uses scour vaccines as we luckily do not incur many scour problems. Ask Joe or Barb for more information about the Sandhills Calving System.

5

Herd Health Programs, Care & Handling The question most often asked in the days and weeks after the sale is this: “What do my bulls & heifers need before I turn them out? The short answer is nothing. They’ve been fall wormed & poured with an ivermectin & had their vaccines boosted. In addition, they’ve been PI tested negative and have been semen-evaluated (bulls) or preg checked (heifers). Just jump in next spring and continue with your own herd health program! More complete information about how we handle the bulls & heifers can be found online or by picking up the phone.

The Soapbox Actual Performance vs. EPDs EPDs take into account performance & ancestry of many individuals across different production systems, climates, herds, etc. instead of just one individual’s performance in one herd in one set of circumstances in that particular year. Therefore, we consider EPDs a better indicator of that animal’s genetic abilities than actual performance. When we take weights, measure scrotals or scan for carcass traits, we have some bulls who are older than the average by quite a bit, and some that are younger. The breed associations take that data and adjust it using many variables and come up with a standardized number so that bulls can be compared on a more even footing. For example, what would this bull have weighed at 1 year old (365 days) given that he weighed 1325 when he was 400 days old coming off test. This tends to overcompensate younger bulls and penalize older bulls, especially in a herd’s comprised of earlier maturing cattle. This is why we recommend you look at EPD’s over actual performance. That is also why an older bull with an 1150 lb actual yearling weight might have a 1050 lb adjusted YW yet a higher YW EPD than a younger bull with a heavier ADJUSTED YW. Clear as mud? While we’re on the subject, BW is another one that deserves a discussion. CED (Calving Ease Direct) takes into account actual reported calving ease scores from the individual, their ancestors & contemporaries. Have you ever wondered how bulls from arctic Montana with actual BW of 95 lbs can have moderate BW EPD (-1.0 for RA & +0.5 for An), and be a ’sleep through the night’ proven calving ease sire? Well that’s what we’re talking about. We all know that shape of the calf has a lot to do with calving ease & this CED EPD addresses just that. The Star System Which leads to our “Star System.” On all our bulls, we put a box of stars at the bottom. This lets us take multiple affective EPDs along with what we know about the cow families and the conditions of that production year and summarize it all for you. In other words, if they’re a 4 star Calving sire, we know that the shape of that bull, his data & pedigree and his mother’s history all combine to make him one we wouldn’t hesitate to use on heifers. 3 stars means we’d use him on heifers UNDER SUPERVISION. Does this mean one star is a cow-killer? Absolutely not. We would NEVER sell anything we would not use in our own herds. PERIOD. One star calving ease means use on mature cows without a history of problems. For females, we’re taking longevity, udder structure, fertility under range conditions, mature size, fleshing ability, etc into account. That a bull gets 3 stars means he probably has a young dam. Carcass & growth follow the same principles. Don’t Buy What You Don’t Need Well of course, you think, but it’s not that simple. We all are drawn to the bigger, better, faster idea. But if you’re selling calves at weaning, do you really need 4 stars on carcass? Remember, they’re Angus. Whoever owns them down the road won’t have trouble with standard grading carcasses. But if you insist on 4-traits, 4-stars, you very well might miss the bull that does the best job for YOU in YOUR HERD at a more economical price. If you have average to big cows, do you really want the sexy +95 YW, or are you buying something that will take you in the wrong direction?

20 Month Old Black Angus Bulls Back again this year: EPDs Genomically Enhanced by:

Lot # 1 Calved:

After watching the technology for a number of years and participating in some of the development research, we again collected tissue samples for submission to Igenity for analysis. The American Angus Association takes the results of these tests & combines them with the more traditional performance, pedigree & progeny measures to offer enhanced EPDs with greater accuracy. By adding this genetic information to the mix, we are able to offer you EPDs that are essentially as reliable as if there were 7 or 8 progeny on the ground with data reported. This means that your valuable investment in our bulls now has better predictability than ever before. It’s just another level of protection we’ve chosen to provide you in order to ensure that you get what you need from Downey Ranch. Does this mean we can forget performance & just look at the genes? Absolutely not. Science certainly doesn’t have all the answers yet. Furthermore, how an animal & it’s genetic makeup interact with the environment is still hugely important. Just think of these Genomically Enhanced EPDs as another tool in your toolbox that helps you build a better herd. As always, if you have any questions about this or any information in the catalog, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Very productive, growthy 8 year old dam on this bull who just screams SMOOTH! You can again see the number profile we’re after in him with good growth & carcass without too much milk and reduced maintenance costs (positive $EN)

Lot 12 DRI Focused Future Y166 Breeding Philosophy: Optimum vs. Maximum The progressiveness & size of the Angus herd book has given Angus breeders the power to significantly change populations using data and EPD’s. We approach our breeding decisions deliberately, responsibly and with an eye to the bottom line. As such, we refuse to “chase numbers” for numbers’ sake. Pursuing extreme YW for example, can very easily lead to elephants (instead of cows) who can’t make it in most operations without supplemental feed. $ EN addresses this. I just looked up a hot new bull at a major stud. His $EN is -$37! The bull immediately to the right has a $EN that says his daughters will cost $44 LESS to feed every year than the hot bull’s. Since most of us have neither the desire, nor the checkbooks to support that first kind of cow, we take great care to achieve an optimum rather than a maximum. The same can be said for milk. Too much and cows blow udders and are culled. Or maybe they milk so hard they don’t have the calories left for rebreeding in a timely manner. None of us can afford for that 4 year old to make a one way trip to town. Again, we try for optimum. Finally, there’s birth weight. We’re the first to agree that a live, small calf is better than no calf. But we saw in our own herd that an 85 lb. calf can handle extreme cold much better than a 65 lb. calf. Once more, that term optimum rears it’s head.

20 Month Old 100% 1A Red Angus Bulls Yes, Red Angus EPDs Will Look Different!

Lot # 43 Calved:

The Red Angus Association has changed their EPD’s . These new EPD’s are now more compatible to other breeds and are directly comparable to Simmental and Red Angus or hybrids of Simmental/ AN/RA. The prior base for Red Angus undervalued the perceived genetic merit relative to other breeds, thus the new Multi-Breed base doesn’t over exaggerate Red Angus; rather it presents the breed transparently and on a more equal playing field vs. other breeds. They are still not directly comparable to Black Angus. For more explanation and examples, see page 24 of this catalog. Lot # 44 Calved:

This bulls grandmother, 913, had some birth weight, so he will not be a heifer bull like most Hemi cattle will. But she also was a fabulous cow that had perfect conformation and beautiful calves. We loved her. This bull’s mother is following well in her footsteps and brings more REA to the Hemi line. Calving

Heart of the Herd Bred Commercial Heifers from the Downey Ranch and Kniebel Cattle Co herds.

Ah, summer!

But summer turns to fall and fall to winter. And some winters have brought blizzards! So...

Remember - We offer calve-out service with our exclusive LIVE CALF GUARANTEE! See p. 5 for pricing information & compete details.

25

DRI Bred Commercial Heifers NEW THIS YEAR: THERE WILL BE A BASE BID ON HEIFERS! We have always had a policy of honesty in all our business dealings. With the widespread drought, we have no idea what the market will be for heifers this fall. However, we do know we have grass and feed enough that we could keep all the heifers. Rather than not offer any for sale, we decided the fairest thing to Downey Ranch, Inc.

Spring calving bred heifers DRI is pleased to offer 30 bred heifers. They represent the top of

our spring born heifer calves. To start with, we kicked out those heifers that were too big or too small, were born in the 2nd 1/2 of the season, any bad temperaments, poor performers, structural concerns, etc. From that elite group, we selected heifers from the best cows. When all was said and done, we had less than 1/2 the heifers left. We are offering you 1/2 of the best of the best! These are NOT put together heifers but rather the top of our herd with generations of AI, tough selection and proven performance on the range and the rail. Synch’ed, AI’d then cleaned up with calving ease Angus. All shots, poured, Bangs vaccinated & tested PI negative. Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring.

KCC Bred Commercial Heifers do would be to set a reasonable floor. We set it well below last year’s average, not wanting to raise the price; only to ensure we weren’t giving away very high quality heifers we’d love to keep. Therefore, the base bid on all heifers will be $1500. Please do not hesitate to call us if you have any questions. Spring calving bred heifers The heifers offered here are the result of keeping the top 1/3 of our own home-raised heifers. We then chose some from this elite group for the sale. For these heifers to have made the cut they had to pass strict criteria which includes: mom’s udder and stayability, calving date (first half of season), temperament, conformation, and weaning weight. They are then reevaluated before they are artificially inseminated (AI’d). We are offering a group of registered red angus heifers (selling as commercial) that are bred red angus. These heifers made the strict cuts for performance, but we feel only the best should be eligible for actual seedstock production. Heifers will sell in lots of 3 to 5 and will NOT run through the ring. They will be penned at the sale, but a video presentation will run for each lot in the ring and simultaneously on the internet. A Word About Cattle Feeding It’s no secret that both operations are big believers in retained ownership of quality cattle. After all, if you’re going to go to the trouble of stacking high-quality genetics and handling and vaccinating your cattle properly, why not reap the benefits? If you’re willing to go one step further and identify those animals, the story gets even better. You need to know how your own cattle perform, even if you never anticipate retaining ownership. As seen below, money will be made on changing markets and grid premiums. Therefore, retained ownership will happen more with grid proven cattle. Let’s take a look: Value of 550 lb calf @ 1.65 on Oct. 1, 2012:

$907.50

Avg. feeding costs with $7.25 corn (650 lbs of gain):

$645.00

Freight & Interest (calf)

$45.00

Death loss (ours is lower, but we’ll use 2%)

$18.00

Total costs:

$1615.50

Breakeven price for May 2013 marketing

$1.34

Oct. 1 Pricing through USPB for May 2013

$133.00

This is pretty much a breakeven this year with the only potential being in premiums and market opportunities. Retained ownership looks riskier than it has in awhile.

Understanding & Interpreting Data In general, the AAA has set things up so that the higher the number, the “better” it is. In other words, for calving ease direct (CED), a bull with a 9 would calve easier than a bull with a 2. A higher marbling EPD means more marbling and so forth. However, please be careful not to think that bigger is always better. A bull with an outrageously high $Beef value may give you huge frame scores and hard doing cows. Higher milk values could lead in some instances to udder problems and cows that milk themselves down too much and therefore have trouble rebreeding. The other thing to consider is how much data is behind the numbers the Association generates. We’re excited about the $EN value index which attempts to get a handle on more efficient cows. However, this the Association uses Milk EPD and mature size only to calculate this number. This misses those really efficient outliers (and some hard-doing ones too!).

The Red Angus Association is the only association that builds EPD’s from Total Herd Reporting (THR). THR uses data from the entire calf crop - not just the calves that were good enough to register. The biggest benefit of THR is the elimination of reporting bias from data used to calculate EPDs. Perhaps even more significant is the overestimate of performance of sires whose poorer performing calves are not reported. This next thought cannot be stressed too much. YOU CAN NOT COMPARE EPD’S ACROSS BREEDS!!!! Black Angus breeders consider BW +2.0 and below to be suitable for use on heifers, while Red Angus breeders will usually want less than a –1.5 BW EPD. Having said that, here are the averages for parent sires in the AAA and RAA as of September of the current year:

Understanding & Interpreting the Data Performance Data x BW—Bull’s birth weight as adjusted by the American Angus Association or Red Angus Association. x WW—Bull’s weaning weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 205 days x YW—Bull’s yearling weight adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days x Scrotal—Bulls scrotal circumference in centimeters adjusted by the AAA or ARA to 365 days of age (1 year) Performance EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences) Items in RED are new this year. x CED- Calving Ease Direct is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. x BW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny when compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed. x WW & YW-Expressed in lbs, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning/yearling growth to his progeny compared to the progeny of an average bull in the breed. x Milk-Also called Weaning Wt Maternal, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. In other words, it is that part of WW attributed to mi and mothering ability. It is compared to daughters of an average bull in the breed. x Scrotal-Expressed in centimeters, it is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to the progeny of an average sire in the breed. Available for BLACK ANGUS ONLY. x Stayability-The expected difference in probability of daughters staying in the herd at least 6 years. Since cows are usually only culled for being open before the age of 6, the EPD is primarily a measure of sustained fertility in female offspring. Available for RED ANGUS ONLY. x Docility-is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. Black Angus Only. x RADG-expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed. Black Angus only. Carcass EPD’s (Expected Progeny Differences) Items in RED are new this year. x CW-Carcass weight, expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. x Marbling-expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Higher marbling scores are positively correlated with higher carcass quality grades. x REA-expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. x BF or FT– expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. x YG-predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score, and is expressed in USDA Yield Grade units $VALUE INDEXES—Black Angus ONLY x Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. x $Value indexes are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. x Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. x Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. x Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. x Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Reproductive Indexes—Red Angus ONLY x Heifer Pregnancy (HPG) - predicts the probability of heifers conceiving to calve at two years of age. Many breeds offer genetic predictions of yearling bull scrotal circumference as an indicator of age of puberty. Red Angus’ HPG EPD offers more than an indicator trait, it selects for producers’ desired response: pregnant heifers. x The ME EPD predicts differences in energy requirements of mature daughters of an individual and is expressed in Mega-calories per month. Differences in Maintenance Energy requirements can easily translate into differences in feed required to maintain body weight. While higher milking, higher growth (larger mature size) cattle typically have higher maintenance requirements, there are many Red Angus sire choices that defy these antagonisms - actually combining positive revenue traits (Growth and Milk) with negative Expense Traits (ME). FOR THIS INDEX, THE LOWER THE NUMBER, THE BETTER! x Total Maternal EPD (TM) predicts the rancher's actual observation of weaning weights of calves raised by an animal's daughters. TM includes the daughters milk EPD plus half of her genetic contribution to her calf's weaning weight EPD. The formula for TM EPD is: TM EPD = Milk EPD + 1/2 (WW EPD)
