Welcome...
Welcome to the 28th Annual Sunflower Genetics Production Sale! On behalf of the entire family, we are excited for you to evaluate our offering.
Notice I said the entire family is excited for you to evaluate our offering. Sunflower Genetics is a family operation that has grown over the years to incorporate the incoming family. It’s a blessing to have everyone around and exciting at the same time. Family is the most important part for us.
As the generations continue to add up in our family, the cattle are no different. Things have sure changed since we sold our first bulls in 1981. The cattle have changed, the method of data collection has changed dramatically but our commitment to quality hasn’t wavered. We spend endless hours studying data, drive thousands of miles to look at cattle and spend days weighing, measuring, and evaluating cattle. Seems so simple to always make the next generation better but it takes a considerable amount of effort. For those who think it’s as simple as looking at a computer screen with a bunch of EPDs, you’ve missed the most important selection process. We feel visual evaluation of the cattle is an extremely important part of the selection process. All the data in the world and whatever the computer tells us, is worthless if the cattle can’t survive and thrive in a commercial environment for many years. Disposition, fleshing ability, hoof shape, udder quality and maternal instinct are all vital for long term profit of the commercial cow herd. We realize our breeding decisions not only impact our cowherd but more importantly, yours. Every straw of semen and bull we use is based not on what his calves will be, but what impact they will have on your herd for years to come. We are extremely proud of the cattle that will be offered March 15th. They exemplify our plan very well.
As we’ve said in the past, it’s been a fun ride for over 40 years of selling genetics to our customers. We are honored and humbled to have so many friends and customers in our business. Thanks for your time and interest in Sunflower Genetics. Feel free to call, text or whatever method you prefer to call with any questions.

We have always felt guaranteeing our bulls is a vital part of the business. Knowing a bull is a major investment, our guarantee makes sure you get your money’s worth. Each bull selling comes with our 4 year guarantee on semen and feet & legs. The 1st breeding season this also covers most problems associated with breeding cows. While we can’t cover every reason a bull is incapable of breeding your cows, we will work with you to make sure your cows are covered. In the event of a problem please notify us as soon as possible. More than likely, we will have bulls available to get your cows breed.
In the case you do have problems, we prorate the purchase price minus salvage value over 4 years. If a suitable replacement isn’t available, credit in upcoming sales will be issued.
1st Season Guarantee
Within the 1st breeding season, we cover most problems and injuries. However, death is not covered as insurance is available.
Years 2-4 Guarantee
This covers semen and structure problems associated with our breeding and development of the bull. Example, in year 3 the bull doesn’t pass his semen check and your vet verifies he is in condition to have normally passed and doesn’t have an injury preventing him from passing. In this case, purchase price minus salvage value a 50% credit will be issued for upcoming sales.
In all cases, we don’t cover injury, disease, or negligence. A vet statement is required for credit. Full details of guarantee will be available sale day.
INSURANCE
Insurance will be available sale day by AG Insurance. It is highly recommended that your purchases be insured. For more information contact Morgan Gleason at 785-633-2685.
Trust in our program and take advantage of our 40+ years and counting experience of making SimAngusTM Genetics. Through the years we have gained valuable knowledge about what purebred genetics complement one another. We have first hand witnessed the advantage of heterosis and the complementarity of the Angus and Simmental breeds.
What is Heterosis?
• Mating 2 different purebred parents
• A genetic improvement of both parents
• Has eliminated purebreds in the plant, poultry & swine industry because they work.
Why Simmental & Angus?
• Breeds complement one another while having different strengths
• Both breeds have potential to be homozygous black
• Achieve maximum heterosis while not sacrificing consistency
• Combine 2 of the industries most powerful breeds
Sunflower principles
In 1981 when we sold our very 1st bull my Dad, Maurice Gleason, who had been in sales his entire life laid out what would be our master plan over the years. He explained business would be long lasting if we followed 3 simple rules. After over 40 years we still use those 3 rules in every decision we make.
PROVIDE SOMETHING THE CUSTOMER NOT ONLY NEEDS BUT, WANTS TO BUY.
This one is simple. Everyone needs a bull but wants more. We like to sell bulls to cattlemen that want more from their cowherd. More calving ease, more growth, more carcass traits, more maternal, more longevity and more customer service. Fewer problems = more family time and more financial reward.
NO SURPRISES.
When we first started selling bulls, they were red and white. When the market demanded black bulls Dad stressed, if someone wanted a black bull, they wanted black calves. Ever since, we have worked to make homozygous black cattle. Same with the polled gene. Today most are homozygous black and homozygous polled. We have worked to breed like to like to provide consistency in our genetics. The best surprise is no surprise.
THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.
The final but most important rule. We have been on both sides of this rule. It’s been said many times to treat customers the same you want to be treated. We feel we should treat you better. We believe very strongly in our genetics and love hearing great success stories. But we also want to hear if there are any issues that we can improve. Providing the best customer service is our goal. Our 4 year guarantee on feet and legs and semen, along with free delivery, care of cattle after the sale, our heifer breeding program, assistance in marketing your calves along with any other service we can help are all areas that we provide. We don’t want to just sell you a bull, we want to be a complete genetic source for years to come.

Genomic-Enhanced EPDs
At weaning time we gather tissue samples on every calf. That tissue sample is then sent in for genetic testing. Parentage conformation, color status, polled status, any genetic defeats, and genomically enhanced (GE) EPDs. GE EPDs help us provide you a more accurate, more predictable picture of what that bull is going to do for your cow herd. Understandably nothing replicates the real world when it comes to results but all of these steps help us to provide the most predictable genetics we can minimizing surprises.
“Using genomic-enhanced EPDs for selection of young breeding stock provides a level of precision and reliability that’s never been available to producers before.”
Bob Weaber
Explanation of Performance Data, EPDs and $Indexes
Definition of Terms
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on 1st calf heifers.
Birth Weight (BW): Expressed in pounds and predicts the average difference that can be expected in an animal’s offspring compared to the average.
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MM): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Color and Polled Status:
Homozygous: Sire all black or polled calves.
Carcass Weight (CW): Estimates average differences in carcass weight. Expressed in pounds at a given age endpoint.
Yield Grade (YG): Predicts differences in progeny carcass YG scores at 475 days of age.
Marbling (Marb): Predicts the average difference in USDA Quality Grade in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint.
Back Fat (BF): Expressed in inches of back fat, a predictor in difference in inches of carcass back fat at 475 days of age.
Rib-eye Area (REA): Predicts the average difference in REA in an animal’s progeny, when compared to the progeny of another sire.
Heterozygous: Red calves may be sired by bulls, depending on the genetic color status of the cows.
Actual Birth Weight (Act. BW): Body weight measurement taken at birth.
Weaning Weight Ratio (WWR) & Yearling Weight Ratio (YWR): Weight ratios compare an individual to the rest of his or her contemporary group at a given time. Ratios are expressed as a number with 100 being average. Any animal above 100 performed better than the average calf in their respective contemporary group. ET calves and twins do not ratio for WW or YW.
Scrotal Circumference (SC): Scrotal measurements will be made available on sale day.

A Word on Selection Indexes
Simmental
TI—Evaluates sires use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
API–Evaluates sires use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus firstcalf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Scan for more info
Angus
$EN–Expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, based on a sires daughters. Takes into account lactation energy requirements and differences in mature cow size.
$M—Maternal Weaned Calf Value. Expressed in dollars per head. Predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves.
$B—Beef Value. Expressed in dollars per carcass. Use if retain ownership of calves through the feedlot phase and market them on a carcass grid.
ANGUS SIMMENTAL
What do I need to know before choosing the right index?
1. What kind of cow herd do I have/want?
2. How do I market my calves?
3. Do I retain my own replacement heifers?
4. What are my feed and labor resources?
5. Where do I want to take my cow herd/business?
$C—Comined Value. Expressed in dollars per head. Combines $M and $B. Use if keeping heifers and retaining ownership of cull heifers and male progeny through the feedlot phase and market on a quality based carcass merit grid.
What selection index is right for my cow herd?
To keep it simple if you sell your calves at weaning and retain your own replacement heifers use these two indexes. If you value reproductive efficiency, longevity, calving ease and keeping feed resources to a minimum take into account API and $M when selecting your next bull.
If you sell all of your calves at weaning or retain ownership through the feeding phase use TI and $B. Rewards from selecting high TI and $B cattle will be evident when the calf crop goes to the rail and your check comes in the mail. These cattle generally speaking are built to run on a race track and in this analogy the pasture is a dirt road and the feedlot is a nascar speedway.

There’s always a bull that stands out from the moment he’s born. L341 has been admired by everyone, every step of his life. He’s way more than an attractive, eye-catching bull. Sure, he’s hard to miss with his blaze that looks like Texas, but his performance data is just as eye-catching. 115 weaning ratio in a group of 59 herd mates, 114 yearling ratio, 118 IMF ratio and 114 REA ratio. L341 has excelled in every relevant trait since birth! If that’s not how you make money with a cow herd, I don’t what else to measure. When you really study Lot 1’s dam, it all falls in place. Her calves have ratioed 99 at birth, 108 at weaning, 107 at yearling, 106 on IMF and 108 on REA. Maybe more importantly, she has a beautiful udder, good feet and will also catch your eye. As a matter of fact, her 13-year-old dam has a bull in the sale also. Bred in longevity just adds to the reason he’s Lot 1. A full sister to L341, raised our 2nd high selling bull in 2023 to Doll Ranch in North Dakota. When it all comes together, L341 has the genetics to add profit into every phase of beef production.

This pair of flush brothers will be on everyone’s short list. These blaze faced bulls have everything needed to be herd bulls. They’re growthy, thick made bulls that are sound and have an attractive look. This embryo transfer mating was made because of their dam’s ability to add performance to her calves. The decision to expand upon this mating was simple as a full sister to them was our selection from our yearling heifers to flush. You’ll find 3 bulls from the H18 cow in the sale. It’s a really hard decision as to which bull of the 6 flush mates is the one. We decided to put the two higher performance bulls together. Uniquely, both of these are heterozygous black, so if you want to raise some red ones, they’ll do it. Maybe the best decision would be to keep them together. Lot 2 has a solid set of epd’s from end to end. Top percentile rankings on almost every trait and ends up with a 174 API which is in the top 4% of the entire database. Lot 3 is actually the highest performance bull of the set of brothers. He has the heaviest yearling weight of the group.

This high volume, deep bodied, thick made bull has performance and cow power bred in for generations. Pounds, fleshing ability, great maternal, outstanding ultrasound ratios all add up to added profitability for years to come. His dam raised a Cowboy Logic son who was one of our high selling bulls a couple years ago. L308 has a similar look in a little bigger package. We spend lots of time talking about the performance of the bulls, but the simple fact is, the cow makes the difference. L308 is no different. He’s a great genetic package on his own merit, but the cow family is backing it up. His young dam is doing a super job, a maternal sister is a standout in our 1st calf heifers, and his grandam left countless outstanding daughters. Buy L308 for what he can add to your calf crop, but do yourself a favor and keep every daughter.

Do you want performance and pounds? This may be your pair of bulls. Mass, volume, thickness best describes this pair of Jailbreak bulls. L313 was our heaviest yearling weight bull and L310 wasn’t far behind. Once again, it’s not something that happened by accident. Their dam is a topnotch cow who has averaged on her 6 natural calves 96 at birth (which means they were 4% lighter than average), 107 at weaning (7% heavier than average), 105 at yearling, 103 on IMF (marbling) and 96 on REA (rib eye area). Not to bad. But to add to the cow side, we used the Jailbreak bull not only for his performance, but because of his dam. She raised 3 Lot 1 bulls and a couple herd sires in the esteemed Gateway herd in Montana. To raise a Lot 1 bull in a herd that sells over 250 bulls is a big deal, but to do it 3 times, is a really big deal. Lot 5 & 6’s dam raised one of our high selling bulls a few years ago. Lot 5 is the pounds heavy bull of the pair. Lot 5 is very similar to him. Both will be a great choice.

2 STAPLE COW FAMILIES IN OUR PROGRAM COMBINED INTO 4 HERDSIRE PROSPECTS
We love proven, time-tested cows. The dam of Lot 7, 8, 9 & 10 is a prime example. She’s the mother of our D6101, McLintock, bull and the Banknote E7307 bull. She’s also raised several of our higher selling bulls. When you study her track record it becomes obvious why. As a 12-year-old cow she has averaged 99 at birth weight, 117 at weaning, 113 at yearling, 108 on IMF and 100 on rib eye area. When you throw Cowboy Logic and Chairman into the mating, great things happen. These 4 bulls may be the best she has ever raised.
Lot 7 is an attractive, eye-catching bull that’s thick topped and super correct. He’s in the top 4% of the breed for calving ease and top 35% for growth.

Lotting the bulls is a hard thing to do. This could have very easily been our Lot 1 bull because of his genetic merit. Sired by GAR Hometown and out of a full sister to the Lot 2 & 3 bulls and their other sibs, we contemplated long and hard last fall about turning him out with our fall heifers. In the end, we felt having him as a feature bull meant more. K2508 can add value in every phase. Excellent calving ease, good growth and outstanding carcass merit. His young dam was our pick of her group to flush. His full sister will probably end up in the donor pen after she calves. It’s easy to say, we think Lot 19 needs serious consideration from anyone serious about performance cattle that will feed, yet you’ll want his daughters as cows.

The pair have impressive genetic merit and have really came on this winter. Study the cow family, their epds and look the bulls up sale day. I would almost guarantee they will be on your short list. COWBOY LOGIC WITH A DIFFERENT TWIST ON THE COW SIDE!
A few years ago, Sam went to Benoit Angus looking for an Angus cow to flush for a new cow line. He selected the dam of these two bulls. The Game Day 550 cow was a pathfinder who had raised several higher selling bulls for Benoit’s. With her proven track record, she was an excellent choice. These two bulls are exactly what he had in mind. Well made, sound structured bulls with good numbers and performance. We could go on about how impressive they are but come sale day and look them up. FEEDLOT PERFORMANCE
Knowing that the end product merit of our genetics are not only important from an economic standpoint but also from an industry longevity standpoint. Cattle must not only be profitable but provide a nutritious, healthy and enjoyable eating experience for the consumer. For years we have selected cattle that not only excel in the pasture but in the feedlot and on the rail.
We believe every breeder should feed their steers out and collect carcass data. As a supplier of genetics to the commercial cowherds, a breeder who doesn’t feed cattle is doing a disservice to his customers. We have fed our cull steers for many years with great success. The last pen we fed gained over 4 lbs/d with a cost of gain better than the yard average. They were 100% choice and prime and 60% CAB yet still gathered premiums for yield grade.

An outstanding Growth Fund bull that’s got added thickness, depth and overall dimension. Exactly what Growth Fund brings in his calves. This herd bulls dam is our 717E donor. If you have followed our program, you know we stress cows and cow families. We believe in the strength of cow families and love older cows that are still doing a great job. A great example is the grandam of Lot 110. The 551 cow was 10 years old before we flushed her and produced until she was 15 years old. Longevity of cows is a driving force in the profitability of a cow herd. Cows that can stay in the herd are valuable but those that can stay and produce top performance are priceless like the 551 cow. While 353L is a top-notch prospect on his own merit, his cow family adds a whole new dimension to his value.

Ratios vs. Raw Weights...
As you have probably noticed, we have not put our weaning and yearling weights in the catalog. Two very simple reasons for doing this:
SFG
First, raw weights don’t tell the whole story. How they compare to the contemporary group is what matters. Using a basketball game as an analogy, just because a team scores 80 points doesn’t mean they always win. The formula for winning isn’t just about how many points your team can score, its much more complicated than that. At this point, the deciding factor is how many points the opposing team scored. Contemporary groups work the same way, by answering how a given animal compares to the average of his or her group. Ratios, not the actual weights are used to calculate the EPDs. EPDs themselves are even more important than ratios.
Secondly, environment has a huge influence on a calf’s actual weight.
We know nutrition can push weaning weights up by several hundred pounds. We also know in our operation weaning weights can vary as much as 100 pounds from pasture to pasture. Then to further complicate matters, embryo transplant calves out of donor females are at the mercy of their recipient dam’s ability to raise a calf. Finding the best calves by simply using weights makes it extremely difficult to determine an animals true genetic value. Ratios show how the calf compared to the group and the environment he was raised in.
In the American Simmental Association, our average animal is well above average in almost every EPD trait. In API which is the All Purpose Index, our average animal is in the top 25% of the entire breed. Likewise in TI, which is more of a terminal index, our average animal is in the top 15% of the breed.
115
Bull Development Program
Striving to have the bulls grow and express their potential, but not get fat, is our main goal in developing bulls for our customers. We do not want to buy over-fat bulls ourselves and do not feel you do either. Ideally, the bulls gain around 3 pounds a day. This is enough for comparison in the groups, but keeps the bulls from getting too fat. We know the bulls can gain more, but the race to have the biggest yearling weight or highest ADG is not as important as providing you with a bull that will last for many years and be a good investment for your cowherd.
Bulls are developed in pens that offer plenty of wide open space for the bulls to exercise. These pens are surrounded by high tensile electric fence.
