I can’t believe this is the eighth year we have had the privilege of putting on the Western Exposure. It is always a lot of work, beginning in April, and especially during the fall to get everything ready. I truly look forward to every second I get to spend in Iowa. I honestly think of Iowa, and the people I deal with out there, as my second home and family. I greatly enjoy and appreciate the friendships I have been able to develop during my time in God’s country. I truly believe we have improved the cattle every year and one will truly be impressed with the quality from top to bottom. Our philosophy is rather simple around here: we focus on raising cattle that are versatile for all markets. I don’t think you ever want to chase one trait or one market. Eventually, the winds will shift and one will be left standing at the altar of a dead market. We strive to market a female that can be bred multiple ways and click mated to many different sires. Out here, in the Wild West, it takes a different animal to survive. One can’t understand until they have seen the country were we run our cattle. Not only do they have to raise a marketable calf, the cattle have to deal with predators, fires, drought and work hard to find grass at times; the majority of these females were raised in these conditions and know how to survive. I truly believe that is why they are received so well in the Midwest. These cattle know how to clock in and clock out everyday! Nothing pleases us more then to see the cattle working for our customers. Feel free to call whenever to talk about cattle. I am proud of this group. No, they aren’t fluffed up, super clean, and clipped for a show, but they are honest. They have never had a bath and trust that policy won’t be changing around here. We don’t have time to baby these things. They are in their working clothes and ready to go to work. They will only look better once they make it to their new home. Thank you for the interest and we look forward to see everyone in Dunlap on January 2nd.
- Trevor Roche
Goodbye 2020! Welcome 2021 with a bang at the Western Exposure! Make plans now to attend Dunlap January 2nd. This set of 22 breds I’m bringing to town will knock your socks off. Don’t base it off my nonprofessional picture taking, in person they are damn good. You have to own the factory to produce year in and year out. Anyone of these females will be a herd changer whether your raising purebreds or club calves to sell early in the fall. It’s a great time to be in the cattle business and demand is on the rise! I’d like to thank Trevor Roche for the continued support in buying calves every year and able to call him a good friend. We both invite you to be at the sale or call with any questions. GOOD CATTLE ARE BRED, CHAMPIONS ARE FED!

It didn’t take much of a wizard to put the Lot 1 tag in this impressive beast’s ear. She is loaded with power from all angles. We can all agree that most purebred Simms want to get up on their pasterns, and after putting on the freshman 15 their chest wants to drag like a waddle. She certainly has not missed many days at the bunk, but her chest looks like she’s been grazing the Mojave Desert. I have no idea how this is even possible, if its highly heritable, or a complete fluke. One thing for sure you will not find a better chested PB Simmental. The red color is certainly getting more popular by the day and I anxiously await some awesome PB red stripe faced daughters. Her mother was a sale feature a few years back and fetched a final bid of $19K to Scott Jorgensen. Her donor mother has had daughters sell to Ward Eckloff and Bob May, and both are being flushed. Consistency can be expected, and I will almost guarantee high flush numbers. She has three generations of success stacked behind her. Get on board and join the ginger club. Selling half interest, possession is negotiable.

I purchased this heifer from my good buddy Mike Kuhlman. He always has an exceptional group of calves in the fall. We partnered on this heifer with hopes of his kid having a heifer to drag around last summer. We all know how successful the show careers were for kids last summer with everyone locking down and common sense being thrown out the window. But no worries, our initial shutdown was only going to be a few weeks to control the virus. Any feedlot, salebarn, or day care worker could have told you that would work about as good as putting Adam Schiff in charge of the House Intelligence Committee‌oh wait, he is. Boy, both of those ideas have worked so well. We do need to protect the vulnerable, but we have to let Americans decide for themselves. Our founding fathers are probably spinning in their graves! This heifer has the potential to open up a lot of opportunities for her future owner. She is ultra-complete and with high Maine papers she offers endless opportunities. Data Banks are doing an exceptional job across the country, and I expect this one to follow suit. Mike says she was AI bred for a late February, but was pregged late and could possibly be bred to a calving ease, Loaded Up son for a first of March.

Grab a handkerchief or a tissue, this is going to get pretty sad. Do I know the sire of this heifer? Do I know the dam of this heifer? Nope, now here’s the sad part. We had some early fall calvers gets stuck in a late forest fire, and unfortunately this one’s mother either succumbed to the fire or the neighbor stole her. This is like a modern-day Bambi cattle story. She had a hard start, and is 6-8 months older than the other bred heifers, but holy cow is she good. Throw this stupid book away, that cost way too much to print, and just look at the cattle. She will be at the top of your list. She’s powerful, sound, hairy, maternal looking and she can become whatever you want the minute you own her. How exciting is that! If I could change one thing about her, I would love to reunite her with her mother, mainly so I could get her pedigree! I’m not too concerned about her getting final closure. She has the look of a producer! Steers or females I think she can raise them both. Selling half interest with the option to double to bid and own her all.

MAB females are actually making some great females if they are out of the right cow. Go ask my buddy, Ron Smith, about this one from Estherville, Iowa, and he can give you the full report. This one is scary good in terms of power functionality soundness and has the coolest look to her you will find. I’ve been dealing with Ron for ten years and he has sold some great calves. I also know that the majority of them have come out of this one’s mother or grandmother. I picked her up from him last fall with full intentions of making her a feature lot and she has done exactly that. There are good ones in the world and then there’s great ones. This one’s better than both of those.

You don’t say “whoa” in a mud hole, nor when this female walks in the ring, and the bidding begins. She will be easy to spot because sticks out like a turd in a punch bowl. Not only does she have an awesome look to her but she’s great haired, well bred and has a great personality. One of my favorites in the sale and a special individual indeed. She was successfully shown by some great friends of mine in central Utah where she was named Supreme Female at their final show. She was AI bred on April 10th and cleaned up for 40 days by a PB Angus. She got back to Parma late and was so far along when we pregged we couldn’t determine the exact due date. Three things I can guarantee this holiday season: Hunter Biden is getting a new laptop for Christmas. Joe Biden will forget it’s Christmas. I don’t know if she had swimmer’s ear or a wolf fight, but she lost all identification. Obviously, it’s easy to identify a blue heifer. The question I can’t answer is what was her number when she was AI bred? Thus, we are going to sell her as likely bred to Fireman, our Red Angus herd sire, but no guarantees. Do I know when she will calve? Gosh, I sure wish I did, but she was so far along it is hard to tell without an AI date. This I know, she will calve in Feb – Mar 15th. One of my favorite terms right now is structural integrity. I don’t want to pick on any judging coaches but whoever started that term to sound smart sounds very similar to the Amway salesman trying to convince you that you are owning your own business. I swear sometimes these judges just make up terms to confuse us. I wonder how many of them have used what they pick in the ring to pay off their notes they have at the bank. My guess is 90% of them don’t even make a living with an animal and they somehow are supposed to tell us what we need to be breeding to make functional cattle with high structural integrity. Throw all the hogwash to the side and close your book when you are in Dunlap and look at this female. Everything about her is what I want. She is the perfect female in my eyes. She has looks, she has power, and when you open the book, she has a pedigree that includes multiple generations going back to proven dams and sires. I will put my red stamp of approval all day on this one and you will too. Dave Faber bought a full sib to this one last year that is scary good. This one just would not stand correct to save her life. She loves to have that rear foot forward and look at the cameraman every time she stopped to pose. Beggars can’t be choosers so, we took the picture. I just love how some of these catalogs have all of the cattle standing perfect. You ever thought how is that possible? I looked at my 5th grade class photo and half of the kids were staring off into space, or picking their nose but somehow these photographers are able to get every non-english speaking cow to stand perfectly? We need to really address the marketing practices in our industry. I’m all for posting the best picture but, some of this has just gotten out of hand. Ever purchased machinery that looked perfect in the pictures, but actually had dents and scuffs? The average bib wearing, hot beef eating corn farmer would be out for blood! Our pictures aren’t perfect but they represent the cattle. In most industries it’s considered fraud but, in the cattle world, we say “those pictures look great!” Now let me step down from my soapbox with my opinions that no one really cares about and talk about this female. She may not stand right for the lens, but she will produce. She is a beast. Explosive from all angles and the sweet blaze face always helps. Duke females are working! WESTERN EXPOSURE • PAGE 15

Since January 2nd has become “National Have a Club Calf Bred Female Sale Day,” I’d like to reiterate the point that we participate more with our customers than anyone in this market. We bid, buy, and write a GOOD CHECK for a lot of cattle in the Iowa - Nebraska area. I have never understood this idea of writing a check you have to hold. Might as well write it on the greasy McDonalds bag on the floor of my pickup. Thus, we have exceptional participation and attendance at the sale. It’s a great formula for success. In fact, many of our buyers will receive a larger check(s) from myself during the year, than what they will spend on bred stock. I hate a one-sided deal, and we strive to never allow it. Our sale staff does an exceptional job and Schaben takes extra care since most in the audience are his customers throughout the year. This awesome marked female came from a great customer and friend, Ben Walbrecht. Almost every year I make a bet with Ben based on cattle sales, and he always wins. About the only thing I could beat him at is a foot race and an eating contest. Ben can flat breed cattle, and has had great luck with many National Champions. Lot 19 is exactly what I always expect from the boys in Lincoln in the fall. Functional, good looking, and well bred. Take this one home, I guarantee the kids will love her.

This is my type of an Angus female. She’s feminine, yet actually has something to her. Could she be a little more feminine fronted for the show ring? Certainly, but skinny girls don’t make very good cookies nor do skinny neck bovine make very good mothers. She has a top to her and great muscle shape for a purebred. The options are endless with breeding possibilities. You can go Simmental, Maine, Angus, or keep her purebred. I like cattle with options and this one certainly has them. Around here, we call this one “Smokey” as of Dec 1st. I clipped and torched these in two days so to say it looks professional is quite a stretch. I was in a hurry like always, and before letting this one out of the chute I noticed a spot I missed with my torch. I quickly hit her one last time, but forgot I had also poured her when I initially thought she was done in the barber chair. Well, if you are an active member of Antifa, and know how to throw Molotov cocktails, then you know alcohol is very flammable. I thought I was far enough away when I lightly hit her with the torch, but wow did she light up like the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree. It looked like I was doing a magic trick with this perfect two foot high flame down her back. I quickly grabbed my Eckloff Show Cattle hat (send me a new one, Ward) and started to beat it out. I looked like Bam-Bam playing whack-a-mole at the county fair. It, in turn, lit on fire once the alcohol got on it and melted like the wicked witch from Oz. I tried to smother it completely with my coat but it wasn’t big enough so I had to perform the ultimate sacrifice: I opened two cans of Mountain Dew, dumped them on her back, and put the flames out. Luckily, I got it out before we did any real damage, but for a split second the heifer and I both were wondering what was going to happen. I also think this is why she wouldn’t give me a profile shot. Trust has been lost. Maybe the new owner with have better luck because she is certainly an attractive female. Not a common sire on the top side but if you can achieve the desired look without the common pedigree, I consider that a win!

I think the Angus association was the first to start putting an emphasis on reading the pedigrees before each lot. Maybe because they have to better explain $Beef, $Energy, $Bullcrap and all the other crazy numbers they promote. Trying to understand an Angus EPD profile is like watching a foreign movie with no subtitles. Luckily, we don’t have any of that nor will we in the future. I think sometimes we treat our sale audience like the illiterate Nebraska football team (I’m just guessing they can’t read the play book based on that impressive record). This year we are going to try something different, sale catalog order, with minimal interruptions. If you can’t read the catalog sit next to Ward Eckloff and you can both try to sound out the words together. Tt-he t-he t-he (first person to name the movie gets $100 sale credit) Otherwise, get ready for a quick and snappy sale. We will be rolling! Lot 25 is the textbook Angus base we always try to keep in our cow herds. This type can stand the test of time. Not the freak nor the chump. She is the reason why the Angus breed became so successful. This type can always produce.

Every concerned mother told her children, “You are who you hang around with,” as they walked out the door. I think that sometimes rings true with our cattle and the show ring. Maybe because I’m a loser and don’t like to travel (in the words of my wife), or because I think I’m too busy when I’m not to go to a show. I do not follow the show ring that closely, and based on what I see, I’m certainly happy I don’t. If you think those flatmate cattle will make it in your pasture, great! If you ask me, they are starting to look like a Shorthorn, and we all know how great they have become. Cattle still need to have a base and some power. Yes, those extreme choke next ones are fun to look at but rarely do they make it in the pasture. I love pretty cattle, but I enjoy bank deposits more. This type creates bank deposits.

I love to visit my customers in the Midwest and see how my cattle are doing for them. The pre-diabetic Scott Frost wanna be from Woodbine, Iowa has done an exceptional job in picking out my best females. We don’t need to tell Pryor he’s any smarter than he already thinks he is, but I will give the guy some credit. This one’s mother has sold her two calves for $4000 & $7000. I wish I could have got this one in a little earlier. Her condition could be better but her picture makes her look big time. On a side note, when I saw Adam this summer he told me he was going to make the catalog with this female and congratulations you did.

This group of heifers (Lots 34-39) come from my good buddy, Doug Hansen, in Estherville, Iowa. He always buys a nice group of breds and I have the pleasure of plucking a trailer load of calves out of his herd every year. I brought half to town and the other half I incorporated back into my herd. This is a good example of the quality our first calf heifers can raise on their first calf. The Hansens do a great job with their cattle and are even better people to deal with. Whatever he says goes and there is no pissing backwards. I love to deal with straight shooters and he certainly is that and more. I’m sure he’ll be there January 2nd, so be sure to shake his hand and ask for a short opinion about our current political environment. I know you will get a firm and honest opinion that I will stand behind.

A lot of people ask me how long it takes to write these footnotes and in all honesty, I usually just open my Gmail app on my phone, press talk to text while I’m looking at the cattle, and start describing them. It usually takes about 2 hours to fill the book up with comments. Now the editing and punctuation might take two days if you ask my wife. I think the monkey that scribbled on the ACT exam got a higher English score than I did. All I had next to this beast is powerful, functional, and sappy. She is all three of those and more. If you’re ever in Algona, Iowa ask my buddy Murl Dodds about the time he went 87 on a son of Mossy Oak Mudslinger. It was this last spring and he came out of the gate with a jump to the left and then back to the right. Murl was in good position, but after the eight seconds the bull had the final say. Broke six ribs, and beat him like a redheaded stepchild. Luckily, Murl was okay and too stubborn to know he was hurt. He always puts together a great set of calves in the summer bid-off sales. We were fortunate enough this year to sell him a group of eggs and pregnant recips that raised his high seller. She was a HIA x PB Angus (Opportunity) female. These next two are maternal sisters out of that same great angus donor. We had a bank of eggs on her and sold her through this sale 2 years ago. Breeding heifers is like going for it with a driver on a par 4. We have all heard about that one steer that came out of the first calf heifer and won all of the shows. Much like we have seen on TV when Dustin Johnson cranks one about 430 and lands in softly in the middle of the green. Let’s be honest, 99% of the heifer calves go to the sale barn and we don’t ever own the 1%. Much like how our golf ball never carries the green, and ends up in the water, brush, or in Remington Weiss’s usual case, out of bounds. I think we need to closely watch the first-generation. I don’t like to play with fire and I don’t like to pull calves. I bred this female and a few others to a PB Wagyu. They should come super small and make that first calving episode a much less stressful experience. I will buy all wagyu influenced calves back for $1200 next fall. This heifer originated at Clin Von Glen’s in Denison, Iowa. He is a great supporter of the sale, and always a great stop during our fall tour. I would love to make fun of the guy, but if he was mad, I don’t think there’s a log chain made that could hold him down. He’s a stout boy, and could probably beat the bull with the china cabinet. He told me this heifer would be a sale feature and she has filled that role. I love her smut face (for those that don’t know the term smut, ask a sheep farmer). They are the best females, and I expect the same with her. She was the backup show heifer for my friends that had lot 5. Same story on the calf inside. He was the best Interstate Chantel bull prospect I had ever seen. Of course, I only got one year of use out of him until he didn’t come home from the mountain. I have some semen and have bred just a few cows to him. This group of his daughters are exceptional. I can’t think of a bank that has ever succeeded with a 0% interest rate and a portfolio of unsecured notes, but for some reason the average club calf breeder thinks they’re better off in this position after selling their best calves. Things need to change and in a hurry. We need to get back to our roots of tradition ag-business practices. This Monti Montana female comes from Mike Smith at Coyote Valley Cattle in Iowa. He’s as straight as a string and always represents his cattle with integrity. It has been an absolute pleasure doing business with him. This female is a perfect example of where she came from. What you see is what you get. She is extra cute with the perfect blaze face in a yellow package. If you receive a phone call to buy any of these Angus – do it! These are all great foundation type to build a cow herd around. Breed them Simmental, Maine or keep them purebred. They have the great cowy look that is essential for maternal excellence. I love the right kind of Angus, and these are exactly that. On the phone call subject, I spend all day listening to talk radio and there are a ton of advertisements for receptionist services. Studies show people hate voicemails and automated calling, but not in the club calf world! We don’t answer our phones, and if you’re lucky enough to get a voicemail, it’s either full or not set up yet. Jeeze, come on! I agree it’s disrespectful to answer when you are working with others, and I often leave mine in my truck to avoid the distraction, but I always try to call back. In fact, this fall I called Schaben to buy some fat cattle for me, and he answered in the middle of selling during the weekly auction. If Jon can answer between lots and take care of a customer, why can’t we do the same? My generation needs a Stockshow U class on “customer relations” more then anything right now!

They always ring the bell with their fall sales and I usually have to pick my jaw up off the ground after looking at their calves. They have this deal figured out. Lot 76 is a full sib to their recent Iowa State Fair Champion, but in a black package. Watch her video online! Mark my words, she will not be super full when sale day rolls around. Other than the illegal drug trade, it would be difficult to find an industry that will deliver a product to a buyer; knowing they are not going to get paid for a certain time, and only paid if said product is to be sold at a higher price than purchased. Either we need to rethink our business practices or there is not a Quaker-Amish-Mormon combination that has the faith of a club calf breeder. I don’t get it. We need to change the game and put everybody on an equal playing field. We buy a lot of cattle from our customers and we have always paid for them at delivery. This female was able to be purchased last fall because of the exact scenario I described, did not go as planned. She was never paid for, was luckily returned, and I was anxiously waiting to buy her like a fat kid on the corner waiting for the ice cream truck.

I love these mellow yellows. They are true 50/50 Red Angus/Charolais crosses. This one’s mother sold two years ago to my buddy, Brad Otto. I have sold numerous bulls out of this same meeting that have done an exceptional job. I think this heifer when crossed to a crippled fuzzy will flat-out work. Add a shot of hair to her and she will add everything else the club calf bulls are needing help with today.

“Science” says it’s safe to put on a mask and walk into your local Wal-Mart, Home Depot, or Menards with 500 other people wearing the same pajama pants for the last two weeks, a head of hair hocus pocus couldn’t even break down, and look worse than the chronic pen at a 50,000 hd feedlot. But don’t you dare mask up and sing at church, eat at your local burger joint, or watch your kids ball game indoors. Obviously, I don’t have a PHD behind my name, but if you can’t see a problem with this you probably shop for non rBST almond milk. I live five miles from Oregon. During the entire shutdown the Marijuana dispensaries have been open 24/7, but the schools and all youth activities are shut down. Totally makes sense, right? But don’t you dare get together for Christmas. Stay home and be miserable like all the elitists that make these policies. I’m not sure science is needed to form an opinion on this heifer. She is extremely long fronted and choke necked. Perfect leg set on a great running gear, and a hair coat that would make Chewbacca jealous. Maternal sib to lot 12.

“We saved the best for last!” Is there a more cliché start to the last lot in any sale then that? This is the last heifer and sorry to disappoint, but she is not the best. She’s probably more like “middle of the road,” to be honest. I don’t have any info on her other then she looks pretty nice. Tons of hair and deep sided with a massive amount of bone. The mystery lots always pay for themselves quick. Jump on the bus and take a mystery lot home.

If you are a fan of the current Angus that are winning in the ring turn the page. Personally, I think they are gorgeous to look at, but they don’t work in my neck of the woods. I have twin 9-year-old girls that average 72 lbs. dripping wet, and I think they are stouter than the new age Angus. I am always looking for an Angus female with power, bone and performance. They will always be profitable no matter where the trends flow. Lots 104 and 105 are my type. A lot of people talk about foot size and bone. These two could be stand in doubles for the Budweiser Clydesdales. They are massive at the ground and I don’t think a PB Angus can have anymore then what these two both possess. They are proven cows with a Champion Bull at the NILE and take a look at Lot 23. She is a direct daughter of lot 105. Did we mention they are maternal sisters out of the great Malson’s Savannah 27W. She was the Champion Angus at the NWSS in 2011. The homework is done. Proven, both have been flushed with results, Daugthers of a Denver champion. Selling choice and half interest in both females selling. Call for details or more info.

Picture day is kind of like raising kids. You want to kill them one moment when they won’t stand correct. The next moment, you are willing the bet the farm based on the pose the heifer gave you with the perfect stance. We all hate picture day(s), and the emotions are always in the high-flow spectrum. So, with that all being said at the end you’re always proud of them. I am certainly proud of this one. She pictured like a champion because that’s exactly what she is. I farmed this one out to be shown, and of course, she was bred late. We kicked her out on grass this spring and basically forgot about her. Unfortunately, she had her first calf die inside of her about two weeks before calving. It was a nasty process like always, and I thought she was probably done for. Some home the cattle gods were smiling down on me, and she quickly cleaned and bounced back like a Champion. She was always an all-star and even looks more like it now. Super powerful female with a load of hair and half-blood papers if you want them. She will be a fun one to bred many different ways.

This is a unique Maine female. She is out of Sooner’s dam and the great Statesman. She is loaded with power, power and hair! Now, why am I selling her? Good question. She is just to hard doing for my area. She needs a comfy home. I bought her to flush and use as a base for some high Maine females, but they just won’t cut it in my environment. I’m really starting to wonder if any Maine cattle will cut it in my area. Environment is the king and dictates more than EPDs and genetics all day every day!

Going old school here with Whiplash. My dad always called me Whiplash when we would sort pairs on horses because I looked like the monkey riding the back of the Border Collie dog you see at the rodeos. I figured staying on was the goal, but you’re supposed to have some grace as well. This Whiplash daughter has done an exceptional job for me. She has always outperformed herself and raised some great calves. Her bag could certainly be better but I have never had to assist a calf. She will raise a lunker and love it to. PAST BEAR HUNT WINNERS: 2017 - Stoltz Exotics - Nebraska 2017 - Doug Hansen - Iowa 2018 - Kevin Fisher - Ohio 2019 - Brian Little - Oklahoma 2020 - Brian Little - Oklahoma
First of all, I want to thank Trevor for this bear hunt. We went to North Central Idaho with Jay Roche and two other guides. Between their stories - some true, and some I’m not so sure about - and the scenic country, it was quite the experience! Trevor calls it “God’s Country,” but I’m not sure about that. We hunted with dogs that had GPS collars, across creeks, rocks, trees, snow and other obstacles. At one point, the bear was 12 miles away from us and circled back and ended up 1.2 miles away. The dogs tree’d him, thank heavens, because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to walk 12 miles in the mountains to shoot him. The hospitality Jay showed us was second to none. Besides wrecking two four-wheelers and tearing the front end out of one pick-up, everyone came back in one piece with lots of pictures and stories. I could go on and on about this hunting trip, but Trevor said to keep it short! Thanks again, Trevor, for one hell of an adventure. - John Stoltz PAGE 56 • WESTERN EXPOSURE
