“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”- Dolly Parton. Many of us need to be reminded of this this time of year. With kids being back to school with several activities and constantly on the run, fall preconditioning, crop harvest, weaning, moving hay, and fall calving for some we can get really busy making a living and may forget to keep making a life. I recently heard that on average a family spends 37 minutes of quality time together each day! Now let that sink in. Are you average? I know it made me stop and think about what choices I am making each day with my family, my job, and how I utilize my time. During really busy times we have to be creative and challenge ourselves to not forget to keep making a life.
As the dust has settled and I have been able to regroup a little bit from the whirlwind of Nebraska Angus Association events that took place in August and September I am happy to say that each event went very well. To start off was the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. This year entry numbers were low for Angus with 24, but the quality that showed was top notch. Following the state fair was Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island. Displaying at Husker Harvest Days were breeders, C1 Cattle, Dethlefs Angus Ranch, Hollman Angus, and Schulte Angus for a total of five pens. These pens included two pens of young bulls, one older bull, a pen of three heifers, and a cow calf pair. There was a lot of traffic through the tent this year and the weather was phenomenal! A day after Husker Harvest Days the annual Nebraska Angus Tour took place in the Kearney area. The participation this year was one of the largest ones with more attendees going to every stop. During the tour, attendees got to enjoy socialization with other breeders and sponsors, eat outstanding beef, view cattle from Gardels Lazy Four Angus, Schulte Angus, Key Ranch, Bartels Angus, and TC Ranch. Special interest during the tour included a presentation by Dr. Mark Boggess- Director of US Meat Animal Research in Clay Center, a tour of Wood River Dairy near Miller, and a viewing of the east lot at Phelps County Feeders with talk about their feedlot and business Nebraska Star Beef near Bertrand. Over 100 people attended this year’s tour. At the final stop door prize drawings and the annual heifer raffle drawing took place. Congratulations to Kelsey Evans of Bertrand for winning this year’s heifer!
Coming up for events this year will be the National Angus Convention in Orlando, Florida in November, and our annual meeting and banquet and royalty contest in Kearney in December. I encourage everyone to make plans this year for our annual meeting and banquet. This event provides great networking and education for Angus producers. At this event we have a meeting that provides information on what the Nebraska Angus Association has been working on and the future goals for the association. The board of directors and myself hope you can attend this year to help provide feedback to assure that the association keeps moving forward in the right direction.

With that I hope everyone has an amazing fall and holiday season!

Hello Fellow Angus Enthusiasts,

As I write this, I’m looking at a sale report with 600 lbs. bawling steers in our area bringing north of $3.00/lb. Steers going the door of our feedlot grossing $3,000/hd. The long-range weather looks to be returning to a favorable moisture pattern for the state of Nebraska. While that might mean some snow this fall, the future is bright for those of us that own the beef factory.
It is a great time to be in the cattle business and I believe that it is an even better time to improve and invest in genetics. As you go through this newsletter or scroll through the events page on our website, you’ll see that there are as many high-quality Angus cows for sale in and around the Cornhusker state as there has been in the last 10 years. I cannot think of a more advantageous time to trade in poor producing cows for high quality genetics that I think will only be more expensive and valuable over the next 3-4 years. In 2014, there was a great run on cows and bred heifers the last time calves got this high. Now the cow herd is even smaller, and rebuilding has hardly begun based on feedlot placements.
Looking to spring, if you have the opportunity keep and breed heifers start making the plan now. Investing in a high-quality herd bull that you can collect and breed those heifers to is always a good investment and bred heifers look to be worth even more in 2024/2025.
I apologize for my attempt to be Randy Blach at CattleFax but I am excited about where we are in the cattle business and where we are headed. Nebraska Angus members are leaders in top quality Angus genetics, and I look forward to seeing you all capitalize on this long-awaited top side of the cattle cycle.
As coming up is the American Angus Association Annual Meeting and Convention in Orlando, FL the first weekend in November. If you have wanted to take the kids to Disneyland, here is the opportunity to go and get to fellowship with Angus breeders and learn the latest in goings on at the American Angus Association. We also hope to see you in Kearney on December 2nd for our Annual Meeting and Banquet.
May God Bless you all and I hope to see you this fall,
Joe Epperly NAA President308 884-3900

Greetings Angus Family,

What an adventure we’ve had these past few months! The State Fair brought us to greet exhibitors with cookies and water assisted by our queen and princess. Husker Harvest days found us venturing up and down the streets finally ending up in the Angus tent to greet patrons sharing our passion for this awesome breed. The Angus tour took us across the central part of the state bringing a variety of cattle enthusiasts sharing knowledge of every aspect of the cattle industry. Oh and did I mention that I was trusted to drive one of the vans on the tour! I really enjoyed all the passengers and learned a lot from them.
As we look ahead to the next few months, we are busy preparing for our winter meeting held in conjunction with the adult meeting and banquet where we will also hold our auxiliary fundraiser— the Silent Auction. We are accepting donations for this auction looking for unique items for all ages. If you have any items to donate or suggestions, please share with a board member.
Our next meeting will be held at Diva’s at Kearney Floral on December 2nd at 2:30pm. During this meeting we will be holding officer elections, so please consider sharing your talents by becoming an officer. We will also be learning how to create a table top arrangement for the holiday season with instructor Stacey Schulte. If you will be joining us and want to participate, please let me know by November 15th to reserve your materials. There will be a small fee for this activity.
Many blessings to you and your families this holiday season and I am looking forward to seeing you in Kearney this December!
Best regards,
Laurie Dethlefs • 308 530-4391

The Angus Foundation congratulates the students who expanded their horizons this summer as Angus/Talon Youth Education Learning Program interns. The interns joined five Angus host ranches throughout the United States for an immersive learning experience in the cattle industry. The Talon Youth Education Learning Program internship is the legacy of the late Camron “Cam” Cooper of The Talon Ranch, Twin Bridges, Montana. Cooper set up the Angus/Talon Youth Education Learning Program Endowment Fund in 2009 to be a holistic educational opportunity for students.

“We had an excellent group of interns for the summer,” said Jaclyn Boester, Angus Foundation executive director. “We enjoyed watching the

growth our interns achieved while working and learning alongside their hosts.”
The five individuals hailed from a variety of regions and backgrounds. Talon interns “learn by doing” through hands-on experiences provided by their host ranches.
“By participating in the Talon Internship, I enhanced my networking skills along with technical skills that I couldn’t have learned in a classroom,” said Garrett Ulmer, 2023 Talon intern.

Ravenna, Nebraska, interned with Blueprint Genetics/Henning Farms, Janesville, Wisconsin. Dethlefs studies animal science at the University of NebraskaLincoln. She grew up as a fourthgeneration Angus breeder on her family’s operation, Dethlefs Angus Ranch, and has been involved in the Nebraska Junior Angus Association and National Junior Angus Association. Dethlefs plans to pursue a career in beef reproduction while staying involved in her family’s ranch.
Blueprint Genetics/Henning Farms provided Dethlefs a unique combination of experiences. Henning Farms is a family-run program focused on providing high-quality Angus cattle. In addition to annually marketing heifers, the farm has an embryo-intensive program through work with Blueprint Genetics. As an intern, Dethlefs spent time assisting with both operational duties at Henning Farms and at the Blueprint Genetics IVF collection facility.
