Hello and Welcome!
We are delighted to welcome everyone to our annual production sale. This year, 2025, holds special significance as it marks 40 years of dedication to the Gelbvieh breed for the Sickler family. Reflecting on the past year, we find ourselves grateful for the remarkable journey we’ve shared with all of you.
Each year, writing this letter offers an opportunity to look back at the challenges and high points we’ve experienced. Despite the hurdles our cow herd faced throughout the summer, we are pleased to report a very good breed up and conception rate. It’s truly remarkable how resilient and adaptive our cattle have been, even when faced with less-than-ideal weather conditions. The tide has finally turned in favor of cow-calf producers, with markets showing strong support. Good calves with solid weights have brought in good money—an excellent reason to consider incorporating Gelbvieh into your cross-breeding program! I put a special emphasis on the maternal side of the pedigree when I wrote footnotes this year. With calf prices at a record high, and input costs increasing just as fast, it’s more important than ever to look at the maternal efficiency and power in your cow herd. The bulls your buy this year will influence your cow herd for the next 10 years – let’s make sure they’re leaving the kind of cows behind that will make you money. No matter the changes and challenges that come our way, one thing remains constant: good, hard-working cattle will always pay the bills.
This year we are offering the first sons of our new herd bull additions, including LRSF Itasca, RWG Jealous, and JRI Troubadour. We place a large emphasis on keeping our genetics fresh so we can continually offer fresh bloodlines that will work for our customers. We tend to say it every year, but the set of bulls we have to offer this year is the strongest, most consistent group of bulls we’ve ever had on the ranch. We are incredibly proud of these bulls, the way they’ve developed, and the future in front of them. Our goal is to provide you with genetics that not only make you money, but bulls you’ll be proud to have
walking your pasture.
As in the past, the bulls were grown from conception to weaning utilizing the Biozyme mineral nutrition program. At weaning we made a change to a new feed and mineral program through Hubbard Feeds. The bulls continue to be grown on a forage based ration with a target gain of 3 to 3.5 pounds per day, while still keeping them fresh and not getting overly fat. This years offering is averaging 3.71 pounds per day since weaning – very impressive given the heat, dust, snow, and cold that we’ve been given this fall and winter! Again this year, we are excited two welcome two guest consignors to the sale – Dan & Morgan McCarty, and Shawn Kuhnhenn. Their bulls have been here since the day we weaned, and have been on the same health and nutrition program as the PHG bulls. They also sell backed by the same guarantee as our bulls.
The sale will again be held at the newly renovated sale facility at Klint & Maralee’s. All cattle will be sold by video, with the bulls available for viewing within feet of the sale facility. No live animals will be entering the building. We will have the videos available for viewing on our website www.prairiehillsgelbvieh.com approximately 2 weeks before the sale. Any supplemental sale information will also be posted on our website. The animals will be available for viewing beginning at 12PM on Friday, February 7th, and 9AM Saturday, February 8th.
This year the sale will be broadcast on the internet through DVAuction.com. Please make sure you’re approved prior to the sale if you’d like to bid online. We will also have people available if you choose to bid over the phone. Please contact Klint in advance so arrangements can be made.
We would again like to thank everyone for their support and trust in our program over the last 40 years. Please stop by anytime to tour through the sale offering and cow herd. If you have questions on any of the animals, please don’t hesitate to give us a call!

What a bull to lead off the 2025 sale offering! Homo Black, Homo Polled, and loaded phenotypically and genotypically. He’s in the top 10% or better for over half of his EPD traits. He’s backed by one of my favorite cows in the herd who achieved Dam of Merit status in 2024. With 4 calves averaging a 107 weaning ratio, she’s as predictable as they make them. Take a look at MAGA himself - long sided, clean fronted, but still plenty of rib shape and dimension. We thought long and hard on keeping this guy ourself to replace Itasca, but we’ve decided to utilize him AI instead. If 2024 taught us anything, it’s that MAGA is a movement, and this guy will move your cow herd in the right direction! Selling full possession and 50% semen interest.

A bull with this much length and dimension could only be named Montana. Probably the most powerful of the Itasca sons, he’s an awesome combination of power and performance. 81 pounds at birth, 898 at weaning, and a 4.9 ADG for his first 60 days on test. Mama is a 3 time Dam of Merit winner with a 105 weaning ratio over 6 calves. Backed by Dominance and the great Esmoralda cow, he has a pedigree that will work for nearly everyone.

We purchased Marlin’s dam from DTK Gelbvieh in Iowa as Emerson’s first show heifer. Affectionately nick named “Jello”, this moderate framed, easy fleshing mama has one of the best temperments you could ask for. With the softness of Itasca, and the fleshing ability of his dam, Marlin should put a set of calves on the ground that will make you money!

I don’t know if words can express how much I like these Itasca calves. We lost Itasca after his first breeding season, and never got semen collected, so these will be his only calves to sell. I’d sure recommend getting in on the ground floor. It’s even easier when bulls like this come backed by 2 generations of Dam of Merit females! His half brother was one of our high selling red bulls in 2024 - you’ve got to like that kind of consistency!

Merica has had our eye all summer. A bull that will certainly catch your attention in the pen with his smoothness and eye appeal. Once you start to analyze him harder, it’s hard to ignore the amount of length this guy brings to the table. The easiest way to add free weaning weight is to add some length to your calves. I like this calf quite a bit. While his numbers are good, his real performance should have been even better. Short story - this guy was ‘borrowed’ by another cow that had twins and decided she liked him more than her own calf. We left both calves on her for the summer and she weaned off 1,350 pounds at weaning. DNA revealed the true story at weaning. You can only wonder what he would have done if he would have had mama to himself all summer! Top 5% or better for WW, YW, TM, CW, & REA.

This guy reads like a heifer bull, but he’s probably one of the most powerful red bulls in the pen. Gaining at 4.93 pounds per day over the last 60 days, this scale buster has really come together since weaning. You can definitely see the influence of RWG Yikes coming through on his dams side. Speaking of which, his mama is none other than the infamous Rosie C58 female, and he certainly got mamas attitude. Malcolm is guaranteed to catch your eye when you go through the pens on sale day. We purchased his dam from the Kicking Horse operation in MT as one of the most powerful dark red females we had seen in a while. I was hoping to get a few daughters out of her, but she blessed us with this bull calf and he’s been an absolute stand out all summer. This guy is going to be hard to ignore come sale day. While he may be the oldest bull in the sale, he already has a herd bull presence. Kinsley was Kylee’s Balancer show heifer last year, and talk about a heck of a first effort - a 904 pound actual weaning weight, and adjusted to 822! He’s been gaining 4.64 over the last 60 days on test, and just keeps getting deeper and wider. Max was born in January when we hit a stretch of -60 for a week, and his ears show it. Marshall comes to us from Emerson’s show heifer Kacey. We exposed the show heifers to Frontrunner to make sure they were bred early for junior nationals, and these girls hit it out of their park on their first calves! This 75% bull has all the right pieces to work on heifers or cows. 71 pounds at birth, with top 15% CE and BW numbers make him a great option if you’re looking to reduce some birthweight. Look at his width and rib and know that you’re not going to have to sacrifice performance on those calves either.

McCool - a perfect name for this guy. He has sure come on since weaning, averaging 4.5 pounds per day on 60 day test. You’ll appreciate the length and squareness that this guy brings to the table. His 77 pound birthweight makes him a candidate for cows or larger framed heifers. Gunner, Yikes, and Jackson on the bottom were all used on heifers, and lend to the consistency here. One of my favorite red bulls in the pen - both based off of his phenotype, but also based on his pedigree and the history. Mama is a 4 time Dam of Merit, Grandma is a 2 time Dam of Merit, and a 2 time Dam of Distinction. That’s a lot of words to say that this cow family is pretty dang good! When you see the Elegance cow family in the bottom side of a pedigree, you know that you’ve got the makings of a maternal power house. J95 was the last natural calf from Elegance 716T - we swung for the fence with that mating, and she really clicked with EC. Fast forward and the choice to stack JW on top of that proven maternal package really worked. Loaded with eye appeal, this guy will surely turn your head in the pen. He’s got enough pieces that you can use him on a variety of different cows.

We normally don’t breed our Red Angus cows to homo black bulls, but this calf is the result of a happy accident. 804F lost her calf in one of the blizzards of 2023. Jealous showed up from Canada earlier than expected and I needed a buddy for him to hang with. I sure didn’t expect her to get stuck on her first heat. The resulting 50% Balancer calf is pretty darn good and will turn some heads sale day!

Mirage is an EC that comes from a cow with influences of Legacy and Fighting Irish. This girl landed a bull calf in the sale report last year that was one of my favorite red calves. It takes a lot for a later April born calf to make the cut for the sale, but this guy keeps checking every box we put in front of him. 61 pounds at birth, 813 at weaning, top 10% for calving ease, and performance numbers in the top 25%. We used Troubadour successfully on heifers and will be using him again if they come like this guy!

This guy got his name from the old cereal commercial - “Give it to Mikey, he’ll eat it!”. This dude has been gaining 5.33 pounds a day while on feed test. Check out his rib, his quarter, and his hip - he’s not packing on his winter fat, he’s packing on some beef! At the same time you’ve got to appreciate the Troubadour softness and structural correctness. He’s also the heaviest weaning bull in the offering this year at 946 pounds. Uffda!
PHG MEMPHIS M123
Born the same day as M124, these two bulls have been inseperable all summer. They continued their competition after weaning, literally weighing within 10 pounds of each other every 30 days during weight checks. Honestly they’d make a perfect pair of bulls to turn out in large heifer breeding projects if you’re looking for consistency in your calves.

With Just Do It getting injured during breeding season last year, we ended up not getting any natural calves from him. Luckily TJB Gelbvieh purchased a semen package on JDI when he sold in 2022 and immediately flushed their Anissa donor to him. If there was a Mt Rushmore of Gelbvieh cow families, Anissa would right up there. When the opportunity came to purchase embryos from that flush, we jumped on the opportunity. We ended up with 2 heifers and this stud of a bull calf. There’s not much I would change about this dude, but if he was homo polled he’d likely be walking our pastures this spring.

KHR 216K was our pick of the bred heifers offered at the 2024 Golden Rule sale. Her pedigree tracing back to EC definitely influenced that decision. We were really excited when she dropped this cool black bull calf. With a pedigree that is an outcross to most herds, pay attention to Hille Roy R126 hiding up on the top side. Christina Dockter will be quick to tell you that some of the best females in their program trace back to Roy!

Top 15% for BW and top 25% for calving ease, he’s the kind you want hanging out with your girls come breeding season. I purchased the B290 cow from Chimney Butte Ranch as a 10 year old cow in 2023 with the hopes of getting a daughter and maybe flushing her a couple of times. This bull calf is the first effort for us, and she’s bred back with another bull calf in a couple of weeks. This guy is a dude! 83 at birth and then coming in at 890 at weaning...off of a 10 year old cow. That’s pretty darn impressive!
MYSTERIO M39
We sold the opportunity to flush Betty Grable G41 in our first Princesses sale. Cranview Gelbvieh purchased the chance and produced the K173 female. We’re pretty fond of that cow family and purchased her back as an open heifer. Kylee fell in love as soon as “Black Betty” came home and suddenly she was Jr National bound. If this is the kind of calf she’s going to produce, Black Betty has a bright future around here!

Marquee always catches my attention when I drive past the pen. A calf that just has the look and stance of a herd bull, it isn’t suprising when you look at his lineage. Don’t forget that Jaw Dropper, Blackout, and Sucker Punch were all used successfully on heifers, so that 71 pound BW, and top 3% CE number are legit.

We named this guy MacGyver because he’s kind of a ‘do anything’ bull. Need calving ease? He’s got it. Adding performance? He’s got it. Increasing carcass quality? He’s top 20% for his carcass numbers. About the only thing he can’t do is fix your baler with duct tape and net wrap!

Our Red Angus offering isn’t big on numbers this year, but wow is it big on quality! Majesty goes back to the Penny B52 cow that was the first Red Angus female we added to our program. Propulsion continues to be a go-to sire for our Red program, and calves like this are exactly why. Square made, deep quartered, and blood red. He’s one that will leave his mark!

Marley is the result of combining the best of Canadian Red Angus genetics, with some of the best American genetics. An absolute power house of a bull, we should have pictured him when we had the chance. You’ll certainly appreciate his explosive rib and capacity.
We round out the Red Angus offering with another Propulsion son on a Canadian based female. While this guy might be the last bull in the catalog, he’s sure to be found on sale day. With nearly half of his EPDs in the top 25%, he’ll bring structural soundness, udder quality, and foot structure to American based Red Angus females.

MAKE YOUR CROSSBREEDING COUNT
“The maternal strengths of Gelbvieh are a great advantage in my cowherd. These females are good mothers, have quiet dispositions, claim their calves at birth and milk well.”
- MATT JARVIS, PHILLIPSBURG, KS
GELBVIEH & BALANCER ®
Make Crossbreeding Easy
PERFORMANCEPRODUCTIVITYPROFITABILITY
Gelbvieh maternal influence in a crossbreeding system offers added fertility, increased longevity, and more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed.
The crossbred female is 30 percent more productive over her lifetime. Greater productivity equates to more money in the bank.
Using Gelbvieh and Balancer ® genetics can increase profitability through heavier weaning weights, improved feed efficiency as well as heavier, faster gaining feeder cattle.
