Welcome to our annual fall sale!
This is our 26th annual sale since we started the Paint Rock Angus production sale back up in 1998. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve our fellow cattlemen with seedstock that perform and have stood up to the test of time.
We are offering a great set of bulls that have been raised and developed in the high elevation, hard environmental pastures on the Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming. Many of these bulls offered are half and three-quarter brothers to aid in the production of uniformity in your calf crop. This year we are offering many of the breed’s top sires along with sons we have raised out of these top sires for a broad selection on sale day.
As always, the bulls are wintered here at the ranch and delivered to you in the spring, ready to go to work, free of charge. We feel it is our duty to provide you with a bull in breeding condition, not overly or under finished. With that said, if at anytime there is a problem with your purchase, we will make it our first priority to make it right.
We look forward to seeing you sale day Tuesday, November 26th! If you can’t make it in person, you have plenty of options for bidding. Northern Livestock and DVAuction will be broadcasting the sale live on sale day.
Thank you to our past customers for your continued trust and support in our program! Thank you to our new customers for seeking our program out!

A standout sire when it comes to having some vigor and coming with plenty of ease. These calves hit the ground running and have done nothing but grow. A calving ease herd bull with very sound calves and strong maternal traits that has been added to our program this year. We wish we had more of these bulls to offer, but are very excited to see how his daughters perform in our herd as there were way more females born to him than bulls!

This sire has been extremely compatible with our cow base. He injects plenty of power into the bull calves while still being very sound. Coalition stamps his calves with a big square hip and a super attractive design while still being good footed. Not only did they weigh up the heaviest of our set but the females are just as impressive as our bull calves.

If you want calves that come easy and inject a ton of growth this is the sire group to look at. The sons and daughters out of this sire are all around good cattle. They have great fleshing ability and excel in being some of the stoutest, good footed, and are flat impressive. These bull calves this year have done nothing but get better all summer and are super docile.

Easy doing and easy feeding sums up the calves out of this sire. We have used this sire a lot the last few years and have been extremely happy with these cows and bulls. Deep sided, powerful, and good footed all while having the best disposition. Some of the best cows in our herd come from this line!

Quick Reference to ASA EPDs and $ Indexes
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.
AMERICAN SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATION
Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

WINTERING AND DELIVERY:
As always you can expect bulls ready to perform when delivered in the spring! We pride ourselves on wintering these bulls on a high roughage ration in rocky pastures with appropriate bedding for the weather conditions. We know that a fat bull that has been laying on the frozen ground all winter won’t be good for the customer or the producer so we take the extra time to make sure it’s done right! In the spring we will deliver performing bulls straight to you and look forward to the visit!

There are nine pathfinder’s in Magnum’s three generation pedigree!
His bull and heifer calves have plenty of volume and power; calving ease with plenty of performance.
