Herd Health: Herd health is excellent. All cattle have been vaccinated and boosted with modified live IBR, BVD-PI3, BRSV and 7-way Heifers have also been vaccinated for Lepto 5 and Vibrio. They have also been treated with dewormer. All cattle have tested negative for BVD-PI. All bulls have passed a BSE and semen evaluation.
Hauling Rebate: Bring your trailer to the sale and receive a $100 rebate per bull. Any bull(s) destined for a state that requires a Trich test to enter will be tested, at our expense, on March 18th, but will not be able to leave sale day. You may bring your trailer back within 7 days of the test results to receive your haul rebate. Please see Trich explanation on page 6 for full details. There is no trucking rebate on the heifers.
Delivery: We offer free delivery on bull purchases for the first 700 miles and free delivery anywhere in the continental U.S. FOR TOTAL BULL
$30,000. Delivery for purchases under $30,000 but over 700 miles will be at cost for only those miles over 700, prorated among bulls still on the load. Please provide a facility where we may unload, sort, and reload. If unable to, please make an arrangement with a neighbor, salebarn, etc. We make every effort to get your bulls as close as possible, usually right to your place. However, because some deliveries are made with a 53’ ground load or pot belly trailer, we may consolidate deliveries to one location in the general area. On some long distance deliveries, we may ask you to meet our truck to lessen the time animals are in transit. Please have other cattle near unloading area so bulls are not alone. All deliveries and injuries are at buyer’s risk unless the optional Bull Warranty (see page 6) has been purchased. Heifers are FOB Strong City, KS, but we can help arrange delivery at a reasonable cost.
Free care: In lieu of free trucking, buyers may leave bulls in our care, at buyer’s risk, until May 1, 2024 at no charge.

Our program: Trouble free efficient fertile cows has always been our focus. We concentrate on the female because that is the foundation for everything else you might want to do. Bulls are developed to manifest differences, not for the most gain. Having two herds of identical genetics in two separate seasons has allowed us to see real time the importance of using data to create EPD’s and Indexes to compare across contemporary groups. We manage our Fall and Spring herds differently due to environment and available feedstuffs. Those two variables directly impact actual weights, sometimes radically. Just because we focus on the female does not mean our cattle will possess inadequate growth or carcass traits. See page 36-37 for real world examples of 7 consecutive years of our feedlot results.
Your Plan: To get the genetics you need find a seedstock provider you trust. One who reports lots of data into meaningful contemporary groups. We hope you choose us! Think about your genetic needs. Do you need a cow freshener, a genetic changer, or genetics that maintain what you currently have? Know the limitations of your environment and management, and make sure your cow herd fits. Someone who works off the site and sees the cows before sunrise or after dark has different needs from the ranch that develops their own replacement heifers and makes a living from the cows. The corn farmer in Missouri has very different selection criteria then the rancher in New Mexico that runs a pair on 58 acres.
Frame Score is reported in our catalog as Moderate, Moderate+ and Moderate-. Given our mature cow size we believe our Moderate frame is about a 5. Because of seasonal nutritional differences, Fall born calves in the Flint Hills express their growth curve differently compared to those born in the spring. We have found actual hip height adjusted to a year to be fundamentally inaccurate.
Dam Information: We have always endeavored to describe the dam of every bull in the sale. How we do this continues to evolve as increasingly meaningful tools become available. Again in 2024, we will provide dam’s MPPA (Most Probable Producing Ability) which compares the repeatability of that cow’s production as measured by her calves’ relative weaning weight in our program.
We collect the actual weight on every cow annually, and provide that data on the dam of every bull in the sale. We give that weight greater context by also providing the Age of Dam (AoD) as well as the Body Condition Score (BCS), which is taken at the same time as the cow weight. While this has been a reliable tool to share differences in the size of bulls’ dams with our customers, this year, we’re introducing a new, more powerful tool to help identify genetic differences in mature cow size - Mature Weight EPD.
Mature Weight EPD is a EPD that is available due to our participation in $Profit. The Mature Weight EPD (MW) predicts expected differences in the mature weight of bulls’ daughters. Understandably it has a significant impact on both $Profit and $Ranch. Mature Weight contributes both to Revenue and Expense sides of the profit equation. Larger Mature cows do bring more at salvage, but they eat more every day. The Mature Weight (MW) EPD will be published on each bull, along with a percentile rank to make it easier to compare bulls’ genetic differences in terms of the anticipated mature weight of their daughters.
The Cow Fertility EPD was added to the $Profit and $Ranch indices last year. By itself, the Fertility EPD predicts differences in the number of calves weaned by bull’s daughters. Using High Fertility EPD bulls across the herd will build cow herds that result in higher calf crop percentage weaned, reduced culling requirements, reduced replacement rates, thus lower cow herd depreciation costs. Together these drive HUGE differences in profitability.
• Bull A has a FERTILITY EPD of 2.0
• Bull B has a FERTILITY EPD of 1.0 We would expect daughters of Bull A to produce 1 more calf during the first 8 years of their life when compared to daughters of Bull B.
Selection Indices: Red Angus indices are built using EPD’s that often have very little actual data supporting them.To provide a more meaningful index with far greater data density of data used in calculating the supporting EPDs, we have added $Profit to our selection suite. Pages 7 - 9 features an explanation of $Profit, it’s components and how to use these tools in selection. Like our Red Angus EPDs, those EPDs and indices produced by the $Profit team come with percentile ranks, which can be very useful - especially if you are unfamiliar with a specific EPD or index.
Parental Validation and Genomic Enhancement have been completed on all Registered Cattle in this sale.
Supplement Sheets will be available for the Spring bulls that were scanned for carcass merit on February 20, 2024, which is too late for the information into EPD calculations for this catalog. This sheet will also include out cattle. A Female supplement sheet will be available with lot information and calving expectancy after the preg check Februrary 27, 2024. We evaluate every bull in our sale for Docility and assign each a numerical score. While several breeds currently calculate a docility EPD, there is no standardized method for data collection.
We used the following technique:
Each bull was removed from his contemporaries, put into a 12’ wide sorting alley and made to stand by himself between two people that were approximately 20-25’ from one another. Because this is a subjective measure, it was important that the same person scored every bull (similar to other subjective measures like udder scores or Body Condition Scores). The bulls were evaluated and scored 1-5 depending on their level of comfort with human interaction under mild pressure and in a somewhat confined space.We share each bull’s Docility Score with their sale catalog lot information.
1. Very Comfortable (stands quietly, chews cud)
2. Comfortable (Walks around)
3. Less comfortable (Walks faster, respiration may be elevated, not happy but accepting of mild pressure)
4. Nervous (Bull wants to return to herd-mates, may attempt to run past with little to no pressure)
5. Very Nervous and/or Aggressive (puts people on the fence). NOTE: Animals that score “5” are culled and not offered for sale.

Trichomoniasis Testing will be completed on bulls for all states that require a Trich test. This will be done after the bulls are purchased at our expense. If you are unsure as to what your state requirements are, please call us and we can help determine whether your bull(s) will require a Trich test. The chance that you will infect your cow herd with Trich by purchasing a bull from any reputable seedstock provider is almost nonexistent.
All Mushrush bulls are guaranteed for Breeding soundness, Structural soundness, and disposition (see terms and conditions). If you would like to add coverage for injury or death of your bull, you may purchase the optional Mushrush Ranches warranty. We would like to emphasize that this is not insurance (like that purchased through a broker), rather an additional service offered to our customers.

• In the event your bull is permanently injured or dies, you receive credit towards the purchase of another bull in the amount of the original purchase price minus any salvage.
Example: You purchase a bull for $4000 at the March 15, 2024 sale and buy the warranty for $200. He gets injured on May 31st. You sell him and get a credit for $4000 minus what he brought when you sold him. If he died it would have been $4000 credit towards your replacement bull purchase.
You don’t last 40 years in the Red Angus seedstock business without your customers’ profitability being your Top Priority.
That’s why for the better part of the last year, we’ve been working behind the scenes to assimilate the Mushrush cow herd inventory and data into the Leachman $Profitshare database, which provides access to cutting edge genetic selection tools. You may have heard of the economic selection index, $Profit, which quantifies differences in profitability of each animal’s genetic contribution to the beef supply chain, but this system will provide Mushrush Ranches and our customers with even more useful and tailored tools to help make the best informed selection decisions! For example: $Ranch, is a profitability index designed specifically for cow/calf producers, who sell calves at weaning and raise their own replacements - this describes the vast majority of our bull customers! We will also provide the new Fertility EPD pioneered by Zoetis which predicts variation in cows’ lifetime production as well as identify which bulls’ daughters produce the highest calf crop percentage. For years we have scored and ranked our own cattle for udder quality, foot structure and docility, but now the $Profit system will provide genetic prediction tools to quantify the genetics which produce those phenotypic outcomes that we strive for and that our customers demand.
How $Profit Works: $Profit assumes that the average commercial bull will sire 100 progeny over his lifetime, that 30% of the replacements will be retained and that the rest of the heifers and all of the steers will be finished and sold on a value-based grid. Even though many ranchers sell their calves at weaning - and don’t own them all the way to harvest, we have seen feedlots’ willingness to to pay for calves from genetics recognized for superior post-weaning value.
Example:
• Bull A has a $Profit of $15,000
• Bull B has a $Profit of $10,000 We would expect Bull A to return $5,000 ($50/head x 100 calves) than Bull B. This benefit would be the cumulative advantages of both Bull A’s progeny that went into the feedlot as well as daughters that were retained as replacements.
What traits are included in $Profit?
Think of $Profit as a genetic accounting tool - adding up all of the revenue generated from some traits, and subracting all of costs incurred by others.

2024 is our 41st year of supplying Red Angus genetics to the beef industry. We have always believed that sutainable profitability begins in the cow herd. This will be a video only sale, no animals will pass through the ring! All animals will be penned at the sale facility for inspection prior to the sale and throughout the auction.
In our quest to provide you bulls with proper development for years of trouble-free service, we have changed our development protocol on these Fall born bulls. After the traditional 205-day weight was taken in early April, the bulls were turned out with their mothers on 2600 acres of native tallgrass range on the neighboring Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Weaning was delayed until about 10 months of age. The bulls were then placed on Grow-Safe bunks, eating a high roughage diet, to measure the individual feed efficiency of each bull. Following that the bulls were turned out in our rugged rock quarry traps where they learn to travel over rough, rocky terrain while developing muscle and bone. What is the advantage for you? You invest in fit athletic, hard footed bulls that know how to forage and travel – bulls that will not melt away and have the libido to go out and service lots of cows for years to come. Yes, a pampered feedlot bull will have a higher yearling weight. If you are concerned about the growth potential of these cattle see the past 7 years of closeout results from our cattle fed at Hy-Plains Feedyard on Pages 36-37. Those are real world results.

Whoever thinks elite Profit index cattle come with poor phenotype - has never seen Lot 2. He is Powerful! But as good as he looks, his data reads even better. We love the fact that he predicts to add significant weaning, yearling and ADG - but his mature weight (MW) EPD predicts only average cow size. It’s important to consider that $Profit and $Ranch are relatively new metrics at Mushrush Ranches. We haven’t been specifically selecting for these values for multiple generations. But, we have been selecting for good uddered, highly fertile, easy fleshing, structurally sound cows and making them compete against each other in large meaningful contemporary groups. When we joined $Profit, the FERTILITY EPD and $Ranch found us! Specifically it verified that we had a large percentage of our herd on the desirable side of the bell curve for those traits. W.J. Stovall from Augusta, Kansas, was getting by with his non Mushrush bulls but was ready for the next step in 2020 for his 300 cow commercial herd. When other people dialed back on risk, he took the opportunity to completely turn over his bull battery with Mushrush Red Angus bulls. Since then he has purchased bulls and bred females on an annual basis building his new genetics into both sides of his pedigrees. The results were impressive, and he was able to see a significant improvement in his herd’s productivity and profitability.
“Our goals were met 100%.” Weights were up by 25-80 pounds per calf and the bulls did their jobs getting his breedback improved. From 2021 to 2023, his conception rates jumped from 88% to 98% with the vast majority being in the front of the season. “This fall’s breedback was the most exciting. 2 cows in 130 were open. We think these pregnancies will be some of the most valuable we have had in a long time. This was in a summer of D4 drought when there were wrecks all around us.”

The close-out picture above details the performance and feed conversion of the heifers fed in the winter of 2022/2023 at Hy-Plains Feedyard in Montezuma, KS. The table on the opposite page shows the results of seven consecutive years of our cattle fed there. Proof that Mushrush Ranches bulls sire calves that excel at growth and efficiency, reaching optimum market weights while keeping Mature cow weights and costs in check.

To start, your environment is very likely unable to support extra growth. Your weaning weights will change very little but your mature cow weights will increase as you select for more weaning and yearling weight.
The Result: Bigger harder doing cows that require more feed and are harder to breed back, resulting in More open cows = More expense and less income.
At Mushrush Ranches our focus is on moderate sized, efficient, fertile genetics carefully picked to do more with less. Our average cow weight at weaning in both Fall and Spring herds for 2022 was 1155 pounds in a Body Condition Score of 5 (First calf heifers were excluded as they are still maturing.)

[1] Cost of gain on the 2022 heifers was .176/pound less than the yard average (including steers). That’s a $92.82/head advantage. It is no wonder Mushrush sired calves and feeders usually receive a premium when identified as such!
Spring Bulls - Feeding Spring Born bulls offered as yearlings is a delicate balance. We have to feed them hard enough to manifest differences in growth and carcass traits but not so much as to make bulls fat and unfit. That said, our Spring yearling development ration is extremely high roughage, including only 35% concentrates (whole corn and DDG). As with the Fall born bulls, these Spring yearlings are allowed to roam in large traps, getting plenty of exercise to get into condition to handle large groups of females without falling apart.
Spring SimAngus Bulls are: Lots 114, 124, 125, 126, 147, 148, 159, 160 and 161 and are identified with Red Sale Catalog Templates. Recipient cows from our home ranch, these cow are pregnant with a natural service calf instead of a Registered embryo. As good as he is, Dr. Joel Anderson can’t stick them all. Sires are the same Mushrush Red Angus herd sires we use on our registered cows. H556- 4413465 and 0461H-4419733. After preg check we will group the cows into sale lots by age.
These heifers were AI bred on December 4 -5, 2023 to calving ease Mushrush Red Angus herd sires and then run right with our registered heifers, exposed natural service to K065-,4643361 K213-4643617, K607-4751583, K517- 4751535 for 55 days. The AI bred heifers will calve around September 1, 2024 with the natural service bred heifers starting about September 20, 2024 for 40 days. Bangs vaccinated, BVD-Pi negative, and current on all vaccinations. Heifers will be lotted after preg check in groups of like kind and calving date.
These fancy commercial heifers are ready to breed this spring. All half sisters are out of Ref. sire G Mushrush Jocko H822. These heifers are Bangs vaccinated, tested BVD-PI negative and are current on all vaccinations. In addition they have undergone a Reproductive Tract Score by Dr. Joel Anderson, Cross Country Genetics, to ensure they are cycling and have no tract abnormalities including small or irregular pelvic opening. From our ET recipient herd, Rolling Prairie Ranch, Hatfield, MO, they were born and raised on fescue.

There was a time when folks didn’t think the calves out of a 2-year-old were ever good enough to make a herd bull or a replacement, but our two-year-olds more than hold their own. You’ll find bulls in the front of the sale order and almost 40% of the U-Pick-Em heifers are out of 2-year-olds. We believe that is a result of decades of selection for rapid early growth, moderate mature size, and superior fertility. These two heifers will be even better two-year-olds than their dams.

Bidding: Each animal on which there are two or more bids will be sold to the highest bidder. Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the printed matter in the catalog.
Terms: Terms of the sale are cash unless prior credit arrangements have been made with the sellers.
Purchasers Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Care will be provided by the seller free for 48 hours for those hauling their own.
Trucking: Trucking will be provided at purchasers risk for free on bull purchases for the first 700 miles, nationwide for purchases over $30,000, or free care until May 1. See page 3 for details.
Certificate of Registry: A certificate of registry and transfer will be furnished for each animal sold as a registered animal, after settlement has been made.
Health: All cattle will have official health certificates to allow shipment anywhere in the U.S.
Breeders guarantee: All bulls sold are guaranteed for fertility, structural soundness and disposition for a period of six months following the sale. Each bull has passed a breeding soundness exam including semen test. Any bull showing difficulties in one of these areas, and if in healthy condition, may be returned to the site of the sale at buyers expense. The seller, at his option, may either refund the purchase price to the buyer or provide credit towards purchase of a replacement animal. All claims regarding breeding difficulties must be accompanied by a letter from a licensed veterinarian to that effect, such statement also indicating that the difficulty is not the result of injury or illness following the delivery. Buyers wishing for protection against injury or death of their bull/s may purchase the optional Bull Warranty (page 6).
Liability: Every precaution will be taken for the safety and comfort of those who attend the auction. All persons who attend the sale do so at their own risk, and the owner, auctioneer, clerks, and other employees assume no liability, legal or otherwise, for any accidents which may occur.
Genetic Defects: We have examined all pedigrees and performed DNA testing on individuals or pedigrees deemed susceptible to possessing a known genetic defect. We fully guarantee all animals in this sale to be free of any genetic defect monitored by the Red Angus Association of American on the date of the sale. If the buyer can prove otherwise with a parent verified DNA test, we will replace the animal in question in accordance with our Breeders guarantee.
Contract: The above terms and conditions shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal sold. Implied warranty: The warranties and guarantees on this page of Sale Terms and Conditions are in lieu of all other warranties, and the remedies given are the sole remedies of the buyer. Except for the provisions stated on this page, there are no warranties of any kind on the animals in this sale as to the merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

Sourced from longtime customers, these heifers will have been thoroughly scrutinized and culled by the time you pick them up in October. All heifers will be:
• BVD- PI tested negative
• OCV
• Be tract scored for irregularities prior to breeding
• Bred by timed A.I., then exposed natural service to Mushrush Red Angus calving ease (top 10%) bulls for 45 days
• Ready to turn out until calving as an aggressive health protocol is followed with a final boost given at confirmation preg check in October
These heifers will be A.I. bred around the middle of May with a projected calving date of 2/15/2025.
