2012…The summer to remember, or maybe forget. It has been a summer that many of us will never forget…intense and relentless wind, unending triple digit temperatures that seared our livelihoods and our souls, sapping the determined spirit of agricultural producers (for cattlemen and crop producers alike). When we did see storm clouds gather, often they brought only dry lightening and subsequent fires, or damaging hail.

Even with one of the warmest 12 month eras on record, the only casualty for our Association activities was our Annual tour. The participants, in an extremely close vote, chose to not hold the tour this year even though they knew the tour would move onto the Northeast region of Nebraska in 2013, if it wasn’t held in 2012. While it was an extremely emotional and difficult decision, it turned out to be the correct call as three fairly large fires scorched portions of the tour area in late August, just two weeks prior to the scheduled tour date. My heartfelt thanks goes out to my board of directors for their guidance on this issue. A decision to cancel an activity such as the tour not only affects those members participating on the tour, it affects the Association as a whole.

Despite this year’s drought, exhibits at this year’s State Fair were up nearly 10% from a year ago, and our tent at Husker Harvest Days was full (eight exhibitors) for the first time since my employment as Secretary/Manager began in 2008. Again the weather affected Husker Harvest Days as wind was a factor in the enjoyment of the exhibitors on Monday (setup day) and the first two days of the exhibit. In fact, the dry summer coupled with the strong Northeast winds on the second day of the event filled a portion of our tent with corn husks and dirt (not just dust) from the field North of our exhibit. From the comments of exhibitors who have been at this

event for many, many years, this was the first time that the exhibit closed early due to weather.

We continue to plan for the upcoming year. Our Annual meeting and banquet is scheduled for December 1, 2012 at the Holiday Inn in Kearney. Please check our website for updates on hotel reservation deadlines and a schedule for that day. Also check our website for changes to our sale calendar as some members have cancelled or postponed sale dates due to dry conditions, while others have moved their sale date for various reasons.

These advertisers provide critical support of our operations and our Association. They have invested in our organization, let’s invest in their future. What did we learn about ourselves this summer? We learned to care more for our neighbors as we assisted each other battle huge grass and forest fires in several different regions of our state, help them find needed hay or pasture, or assisted in hauling water to livestock. We learned that each of us will make the necessary decisions to survive this year’s drought, and we learned that we must continue to pray for needed moisture that will replenish our way of life and renew our hearts. If we do not receive much moisture this winter or next spring… well I don’t even care to think about the choices we’ll have to make in 2013. Let’s keep praying for that moisture.

Husker Harvest Days 2012

In September we attended Husker Harvest Days. We had a great turn out for 3 days. Hot the first day, blew away the 2nd day, and then a beautiful last day. Eight full pens of Angus cattle! Set up time was a breeze with all the extra help. Nice to have a lot of younger people getting involved in the Angus business, but we would be lost without the crucial expertise of “Dutch” Dethlefs to guide us.

While at HHD we spoke with the first organizers of the NAA display many years ago.

The farm show at that time didn’t think livestock needed to be included. Boy did our association help prove them wrong. It is amazing how things have changed. Take a tour of the Northwest area of HHD’s sometime and see all the tremendous livestock displays.

It even amazes me to see how all the other breeds have changed. They are now “BLACK” and add the term “ANGUS” to their name. Even they know where GOOD BEEF comes from!

Hello Angus friends, It has been a hot dry summer and hopefully fall will leave all of Nebraska in a better condition. There has been a lot going on for the Angus Juniors this summer. We had our summer state preview show in June.

It was hosted by the Craig Dethlefs and Todd Hasenhauer families in North Platte. It was a great show and we thank these two families for stepping forward to host. While in North Platte we elected new officers: 1st Vice President Michaela Clowser; 2nd Vice President Maci Lienemann; Historian Caylie Egger; Secretary Treasurer Aliesha Dethlefs; Directors Taylon Lienemann , Cheyann Lovett , and Jenny Keyes; and myself Jud Hoffschneider President. Heather and Allan Smith were elected to serve a three year term as advisors. We appreciate all of the hard work, dedication and guidance from our outgoing advisors; Stephanie and Craig Schafer.

The officer team is looking forward to a productive year.

Louisville Kentucky at the National Junior Angus Show.

Michaela Clowser and I were chosen as voting delegates to elect the new Junior board of directors. This year we also had a candidate running for the Junior board ,Melissa Keyes. We were well represented in the various shows and contests. As we returned, we wished we could have brought back some of the rain Louisville received during our stay.

This fall will slow down some for Angus Juniors, with the start of school. We had a meeting at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island. It was great to see all of the Juniors and see some good Angus Cattle. We decided at the meeting in Grand Island that the State Junior Angus Show next summer will be at the Gage County Fair Grounds in Beatrice, Nebraska hosted by the Lieneman and Clowser families. Blocks of rooms have been reserved at the following motels: Holiday Inn Express 402-228-7000 and New Victorian Inn and Suites aka Caprice 402-228-8808. The blocks will be held until the 30th of April, 2013. There is also a block of rooms held for the National Jr. Angus show in Kansas City at the Comfort Suites Speedway Hotel 913299-4466. Our next meeting will be December 1st in Kearney at Winter Preview.

Our Angus Family : Obituaries Richard Lee Weers was born February 16, 1939, in Fairbury, Nebraska, to William T. and Faye (Lucille) Weers. He was baptized and confirmed in the Diller Congregational Church; later becoming a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Diller and then Zion Lutheran Church of Harbine.

Rich spent most of his life living on the family farm near Diller. He started his own Angus herd with a Black Angus heifer, which was a 4-H project in 1953. This one heifer grew into an Angus cow herd of over 300 cows. As a young man he left home to work with a combine crew that traveled north with the wheat harvest. Tobias Fritzen and Rich became partners of a combine harvesting business traveling from Oklahoma to North Dakota. He always said he was on vacation when he was in his combine harvesting.

He married Shirleen Fritzen in August of 1965. She passed away in 1972.

On August 16, 1975, Richard and Judy Gunther were married. They became the parents of Shawn and Steven. He was a loving husband and father.

Rich served his country in the Army Reserves for 10 years and was active in the Diller American Legion.

He enjoyed working on the Jefferson County Fair Board, Farmer’s Coop Elevator Board, and Blue Valley Beef Revue. He was a long time member of the American Angus Association and Nebraska Angus Association. doing his part for Nebraska Angus Board for many years and serving as president in 1982-1983. He was a member of the Diller Cemetery Board for over 30 years.

Rich enjoyed going to Diller or Harbine for coffee with his many friends and family members. He and Judy loved getting in his pickup and going to the different pastures to check on their cows and calves. He had a special relationship with Ben Larkins, who he said was like a third son. His six grandchildren brought him much enjoyment. They all enjoyed rides in the tractor or combine with papa. He enjoyed working at the Fairbury Sale Barn and driving a silage truck. To him there was nothing better than a good nap in front of the TV--but only when the work was done.

Richard, 73,was called home to be with his Lord on Feb. 18, 2012, after a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife Judy; sons Shawn and fiancée Leslie Todd, of Diller; and Steven of Lincoln; grandchildren Marquis, Isaiah and Spencer of Diller and Michael, Vanessa and Rose of Lincoln; brother Darrel and Nancy Weers of Lincoln, sisters Shirley Lewis of Lin8 • October 2012 • Nebraska Angus News

coln, and Carol Benzel of Byhalia, MS, father-in- law Tobias Fritzen of Diller; his sisters-in laws Susan and Bob Bauer of Fairbury, Nancy and Larry Etmund of Martell; brother-in-laws Henry and Jan Gunther, Marion and Sheryln Fritzen all of Diller, and Roger and Terri Fritzen of Cortland; special friend Ben and Megan Larkins of Fairbury; many nieces and nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, and daughter-in-law Melissa Weers.

Funeral services were Feb. 22, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church of Harbine with Pastor Mark Schlamann officiating. Burial was at the Diller Prairie Home Cemetery with a military service by Diller Post 282.

Eldon Charles Neujahr, age 72, was the youngest of six children, born at Seward, NE, to Rudolph and Hulda (Suhr) Neujahr on August 2, 1939. He passed away at his home in Liberty, NE on Friday, February 17th, 2012.

Eldon was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Gresham, NE. He attended St. Paul’s Parochial School and graduated from Gresham High School, Gresham, NE in 1957. He married Emily Scheer at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Arlington, NE on June 9, 1962. He spent much of his life on the family farmstead near Surprise, NE until 1995 when he and his family moved to Liberty, NE. Eldon was presently a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Marysville, KS. He served both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force National Guards. He was a member of the American Angus Association and the Nebraska Angus Association. He was an independent livestock order buyer, traveling to several states and making many lifelong friends. He was also a hog buyer for Armour, Madison, NE and a cattle buyer for Producers, Darr, NE. He enjoyed his children’s sporting events and activities as well as his grandchildren’s sporting events.

He was a fan and supporter of Kansas State football. Angus cattle were his love; he enjoyed travel and spending time with his grandchildren, especially fishing at the pond located on the home property. He was a 4-H member and leader, and took great pleasure in showing livestock in county, state and national livestock shows. He was interested in tracing his German heritage and genealogy.

Lennart of Aurora, IL and son Nathan T. Neujahr of Liberty, NE. Eight grandchildren- Caroline, Katherine and Ryan Neujahr, Dalton, Veronica, Garrett and Olivia Neujahr, and Suzanne Broersma. A brother Raymond Neujahr and wife Bernita, Lincoln, NE, Brother-in-Law Warren Scheer and wife Mary, Arlington, NE and Sisterin-Law Virginia Larsen and husband Rhea, Bennington, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Hulda (Suhr) Neujahr, by three sisters, Opal Schlechte, Mildred Niemann, and Janice Struebing and a brother Orville Neujahr.

A celebration of Life service was held Feb. 22, 2012 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Marysville, KS. Memorial graveside service was held at St.Paul’s Lutheran Church cemetery, north of Arlington, NE on Feb.. 23, 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorials were directed to the family.

Gary Stoller, 65, of Caldwell, Idaho and Palisade, Nebraska passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2012 in a plane crash in rural Elmore County northeast of Mountain Home, Idaho. Gary was piloting the small plane and encountered stormy weather as he traveled from Nebraska to Idaho to meet up with his wife to go on a cruise for their 40th wedding anniversary.

Gary was born December 18, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois to Oscar and Tillie Stoller. He is survived by his wife Davy Stoller of Caldwell; son Scott Stoller of Chico, California; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Tiffany Stoller and granddaughters Reagan Skow and Mckinley Stoller, all of Palisade, Nebraska. Gary is also survived by his siblings Leigh Layne, Sandy Stoller and Aaron Stoller and his nieces and nephew, Katy, Hannah and Alex Go; Monica (Brandon) Rappaport; and Rocky Camin.

Gary was a loving husband of nearly 40 years, a proud father, grandfather and uncle. He spent his youth in Chicago, Illinois; Seattle, Washington; and Los Angeles, California while his father was enlisted in the military. As a young man, Gary worked as an electrician in Southern California. When he married Davy, they purchased and ran the Beverly Ponyland.

In 1975, Gary and Davy moved to Northern California and bought their first ranch. They later purchased the Columbia Stage Line and started a horseback riding business in the Columbia State Park, an Old West gold rush town in the Sierra Nevada Continued on next page.....

Foothills of California. They operated these successful entities for 16 years.

In 1986, Gary established Bear Mountain Angus with his wife and two sons. He was passionate about the Angus business, and today, Bear Mountain Angus remains a familyowned business which has been passed on to his son and daughter-inlaw Brian and Tiffany. In recent years, Gary joyously welcomed his two granddaughters, Reagan and Mckinley and was a dedicated, loving grandfather. Gary loved and lived life to the fullest and knew no strangers, making friends everywhere he went. Gary’s sense of humor and limitless generosity touched countless lives and his legacy will live on in the memories of those who knew him.

Grave site services were held Friday, June 15, 2012 at the Columbia City Cemetery in Columbia, California.

Betty grew up on the M Lazy M Ranch at Egbert, Wyoming where her family raised registered Hereford Cattle. She was actively involved in 4-H and enjoyed showing hogs and cattle with her brothers. Betty had the privilege of attending National 4-H Congress in 1959 as a part of the Wyoming Livestock Judging Team. She attended school in Egbert and Burns, Wyoming graduating with honors.

Betty attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie earning a Bachelors Degree of Science in Home Economics in 1965. She was involved in a variety of activities including the Student Senate, Home Economic Club and field hockey.

After graduation, Betty worked as the Home Extension Agent in Carbon County, Wyoming until the time of her marriage to Edwin Hall of Bassett, NE on November 26, 1966. They made their home on the Hall Ranch along the Niobrara River in Keya Paha County, Nebraska. Three children were born, raised and nurtured, Les of Bassett, Kyla of Sargent, and Cody of Brooklyn, New York.

Betty was an active citizen and community leader. She gave freely of her time to the United Methodist Church, served on the school boards of Rock County High School and Bassett

Grade School, was a member of the Rock County Fair Board, volunteered time to the Bassett Arts Council, was appointed to the Niobrara River Council, and belonged to the KBR Home Economists. She assisted many organizations with their budgets, including Rock County and various fire districts all while managing the financial and herd records for the family ranch. She was instrumental in establishing the Rock County High School Foundation.

Betty’s contributions to her community and the lives around her are immeasurable as well as her commitment to developing our youth.

Betty is survived by her husband Edwin; son Les and wife Rachel and son Craig of Bassett; daughter Kyla Olson and husband Peter and daughters Abigail, Katie and Emma of Sargent; and son Cody of Brooklyn, NY. Other survivors include brother Lyle Anderson and wife Barb of Scottsbluff, NE; sister Lois Schoene and husband Kenneth of Cheyenne, WY; sister-in-law Becky Anderson of Frederick, Co; sister-in-law Beverly Hall Young and husband P.H. of Valentine; sister-in-law Carolyn Hall of Bassett; nieces, nephews, cousins and innumerable neighbors and friends.

“A lot of people we sent F1 bulls to were very disappointed because of gene segregation and what was being transmitted from each parent,” he says. “Some progeny of these bulls really favored traits of one breed and some favored traits of the other, some looked Angus and some looked Continental. You ended up with a set of calves that were not only visually different, but a lot different in terms of outcome and how you needed to manage them.”

Geneticist Bob Weaber, Kansas State University, says that’s partly because what works on average for the whole calf crop varies among individuals. That may shift the balance of traits toward one breed or the other.

“Even though the F2s [composite progeny] have half of their genetic material from each breed on average, some repairing of chromosomes from the same breed occurs,” he says. “When we make an F2 we see a decrease in heterosis, because on average one-half of the animals’ chromosomes consist of pairings from the same breed of founder.”

Data from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) suggests that the progeny from matings of F1 parents are no more variable than either of their purebred founder breeds for traits like weaning weight or yearling weight. However, for traits controlled by a single gene, these progeny are noticeably less consistent than the F1 parents, especially if the founder

breeders were very divergent, Weaber says.

Speer says that makes it hard to measure how much productivity they should add to the herd: “In many instances composite bulls actually represent backcrossing and may reduce heterosis potential versus using a breed that serves as a total outcross.”

From a seedstock producer’s perspective, it can be much more difficult to create a reliable composite compared to a purebred bull.

“I have 27 years of objective breeding decisions that harness the power of the AAA [American Angus Association] database,” says Brian McCulloh, Viroqua, Wis. The registered breeder, who makes 350 of those decisions each spring, says the predictive power is strengthened by the broad use of artificial insemination (AI) by Association members, who submit within-herd data that ties all animals together.

“Simply put, I am not comfortable ‘experimenting’ with data from other breeds to create a composite bull for our commercial customers. I have more confidence predicting the outcome of our pure line Angus bulls,” he says.

The Angus database updates weekly with more than 20 million performance measures and 17 million pedigrees. That data volume explains why, after dabbling in the composite market to try offering

A good crossbreeding program takes some background in genetics, a big enough herd and land base, good bull suppliers and time to figure all that out. Producers looking for a simpler route to heterosis often opt to use a composite bull.

“In order for a crossbreeding operation to maximize heterosis, it takes a lot of different pasture, a lot of management, which because of size and time a lot of people can’t devote to it,” says Jarold Callahan, president of Express Ranches, Yukon, Okla. “You basically have to have different herds within your herd.”

So the composite bull market was born, where breeding stock is billed as already having that built-in hybrid vigor.

“Implementing crossbreeding can be somewhat daunting,” says Nevil Speer, Western Kentucky University animal scientist. “Many operations would rather forgo such effort if production can be maintained while also ensuring relative absence of problems. As a result, producers are often encouraged to utilize composite bulls as a simplified means to boost heterosis and subsequent production.”

But Callahan says it’s not always a “quick fix.” Express has sold hundreds of Limousin-Angus crosses over the years, but recently decreased the number of com-

customers an outcross, McCulloh abruptly stopped.

Using the MARC across-breed EPD (expected progeny difference) adjustment factors help in comparing data, Callahan says. “But there is still a little bit of an unknown as to where that animal is going to come out.

“The purebred cattle evaluations give you better insight in terms of predictability of individuals and their offspring,” he says. Genomically-enhanced EPDs hone that ability. “You can make more progress – because you have greater access to performance information – than you can in most crossbreeding operations, unless they’re extremely well designed.”

To date, the DNA technology can only effectively sort out straightbred populations, he adds.

“That precludes it from being useful in composites and crossbreds,” Callahan says.

When selecting hybrids, commercial producers may face another challenge: “There’s an increasing need to purchase bulls in volume that provide both uniformity of calf crop and deliver on the various traits of interest,” Speer says.

“Commercial bull buyers have access to larger sale offerings when shopping for Angus bulls compared to other breeds.”

Purchasing siblings in bulk is routine.

“That opportunity doesn’t exist when considering composite bulls,” he says.

Callahan doesn’t dispute the advantages of genetic diversity, but says he’s concerned with those who are “crossbreeding just for the sake of crossbreeding.”

His typical composite customer is in a terminal program, purchasing rather than raising replacement heifers. Otherwise, many have switched back to straightbreds.

“They really enjoy the uniformity of their calf crop and the predictability in their genetics,” he says. There are no shortcuts to that.
