Welcome Friends & Cattleman! Thank you to our customers & friends for your support of our program!!

Merit is a family operation and we are passionate about the industry and its future. Our unwavering focus has been to breed and raise functional, profitable cattle that excel in our environment and management. Raising the kind of bulls that our commercial customers demand is front and centre for us and we adjust to fill those needs. We are proud of our program that’s taken over 35 years to build, but we are always striving to be better. The basics are critical and every piece of the puzzle is scrutinized to make the best cattle we can. That being said, you will not find any unicorns here, they don’t exist. Our herd reference and service sires are unique in the fact that they are owned or raised by Merit so there’s an opportunity for you to own fresh genetics. We primarily use bulls we own or have raised because we believe in their genetic value. We try to stack as many superior cows in every mating to create maternal quality and predictability. We are missing the shows this past summer and fall, seeing all our friends and meeting new folks. Showing has been a great way to present our product for people to evaluate. That being said, WE DO NOT RAISE SHOW CATTLE, WE SIMPLY SHOW THE CATTLE WE RAISE! As of this writing, it’s the end of October and our bred females are out grazing brown stockpiled grass, with their only supplementation being protein tubs. We expect them to continue grazing into December or as long as that resource is available. The sale cattle are not highly managed and they are bred and raised to be able to do the same for you. Videos will be available on line a few weeks before the sale. The cattle are always available for viewing and we’d love to have you see them in person. This offering is deep! The “general” footnote we feel explains what we try to accomplish with each and every female on the ranch. Give us a call or shoot us a text to talk about our program or individuals in the offering, we can give you an honest and accurate evaluation of our cattle and their genetic history as we know them best.

Best Regards,

Trent, Janelle, Macy, Garrett & Carson Liebreich

Welcome to the Sale!

Welcome to the Females of Merit Volume 3...

An exciting offering containing a number of Range Boss daughters that are highly coveted for their maternal abilities let alone their function and fashion they show off. As well Range Boss and some of his up and coming sons, Sting, Kingsman and McClaren feature as sires and service sires throughout the lineup as well as Laflins Casino who came to Merit this spring in a key acquisition. Pick of the ET calves by GDAR Insight and the 6078 cow comes with much anticipation, Insight left his mark on the herd through numerous females which were productive with longevity but also left sons that hit the mark time after time with his his most notable son being Merit 77X at Right Cross Ranch. ET matings from the 2019 Show Female of the Year, Barbara 507 offers endless potential let alone the Flora 4120 embryos, 4120 is the dam to 6078 donor at Merit. Interesting enough as you browse through the book you will notice how so many pieces tie together through cow families or through sires raised at Merit that they have implemented back into their program. The heifer calf offering while modest in numbers come trumped up with production potential through their cow families with a handful carrying the type to show and be competitive!

As stated many times over the years the cattle at Merit are expected to perform throughout the year and the last number of years have been trying through extremely dry conditions with limited forage potential. If it would rain again for a whole summer I’m sure the community would surely enjoy that. Trent and Janelle are as critical as they come on their own cattle and the standards to be met and you can rest assure if they are offering them for sale they’ve cleared a lot of hurdles. If you have any questions regarding this standout offering from Merit Cattle Co feel welcome to contact any of us at Castlerock Marketing we are extremely familiar with the herd and the sale cattle. See you sale day! Shane Castle Castlerock Marketing 306.741.7485 www.castlerockmarketing.com

We love good cattle, whether they wear a show halter or not is irrelevant. If you’re good you’re good. It’s just that simple! Barbara 507 is GOOD! She is the reigning Canadian Angus Show Female of the Year! Her show career last fall with powerhouse son Merit Paycheque 9002 at side racked up the accolades; Supreme Champion Female Harding Fair, Supreme Champion at Young Ranchmans, Champion Female Olds Fall Classic, Champion Angus Female at Ag Ex and Supreme Champion Female, Senior Champion Female at Farm Fair and Res Champion female, also a top five in the Alberta Supreme. Merit Sam Elliott 9144 - Service Sire

Her son Merit Paycheque was the highlight and high seller at our bull sale selling to Kary Family Farm for $22,000 for half interest. His exciting service is highly anticipated. You can’t make a cow much nicer and fault free; elegant in her design, feminine head, neck extension, angle of shoulder, boldly sprung rib, sound feet and legs, maternal, perfect udder and a producer. Her sire, Conneally Final Product has made an incredible impact on the Angus industry with his daughters. He’s built a super maternal reputation, with highly productive daughters that display ideal teat and udder quality. We now have a daughter in herd and a son by McLaren is sure to be a sale feature in the spring. The Merit Sam Elliott 9144 mating combines another super strong proven maternal component along with exceptional performance traits as he’s in the top 1% for weaning and yearling. Sam’s dam, Merit Flora 6078, needs no introduction and is a model cow in many ways. Sam Elliot was undefeated in his division last fall being named Junior Calf Champion at Olds Fall Classic, Ag-Ex, Farm Fair and Agribition. We retained him to walk our pastures, he’s an aggressive and intelligent breeder. Selling 3 embryos guaranteeing 1 pregnancy if implanted by a certified technician. Embryos are exportable. Merit Flora 4120, “Charlotte”, was Carson’s pick of our 2014 heifer calves for his 4H and junior project. She was admired by many as a yearling for her correct structure, depth, and overall balance. She continued to impress as a 2 yr old with her excellent udder and her “Fancy” heifer calf at side. She then raised our top Merit Valor daughter who subsequently did a topnotch job on her first calf Merit Gibsons Finest 9128G who is working in the herd of Lyle Dudgeon in Ontario. Her third calf Merit Flora 8040 was a feature and a high seller in last years sale, selling to Wheatland Cattle Co. Many will know our Flora family from Flora 4120’s first daughter, “Fancy”, Merit Flora 6078. Many more will come to know this cow family through the impact of Fancy’s sons, Merit Renegade and Merit Sam Elliott, with more to come…

Charlotte passes along excellent udder quality, super sound structure and quiet dispositions in her progeny. Her 2020 calves are all at the front of the crop with both bulls and heifers. Her natural heifer calf by Sting could possibly be the best heifer calf we’ve raised! Two sons will highlight our 2021 bull sale. She is a prolific embryo producer and has clicked with every bull she’s been mated to. Merit Kingsman 8030 was our high selling bull in 2019 to Pedersen Angus and Macnab Angus at $40,000. Sired by Bar S Range Boss and out of Layla, he is poised to become a maternal legend. Kingsman stamps his progeny with consistency. They are among the best of our 2020 calf crop. This is an exciting mating from a female with a proven track record, we will be expecting calves from this flush in 2021. It’s not hard to figure out the Socialite cow family’s impact on our herd. They rise to the top on a consistent basis. “Daisy” is elegant in her design with power, capacity and a quality udder. She’s sound in her structure on a great foot. The kids had a lot of success showing this female; class winner at CWA as a calf, Reserve Intermediate Champion heifer Lloyd Stockade, Champion Female Sask Angus junior show as well as numerous accolades at 4-H and jackpot shows. Her sire Merit Big Dawg 3049 was the high selling bull in our 2014 sale to Double ‘F’ for $30,000. He was stout made with tons of character and an awesome foot. Her 2020 bull calf by Merit Sting 7047 will be on the radar come bull sale season. Kelly Schaff calls Supercharger “among the most visually stunning bulls to ever walk American turf”. SAV Supercharger 6813 was selected for use in our embryo program based on his pedigree packed with maternal power, combining two of the best cows in the SAV program, as well as his impressive phenotype. He combines his strong maternal heritage with performance, structural integrity, tremendous length, expressive muscle, large scrotal and undeniable herdbull character. Special sale feature, Garrett really wanted to offer something exciting & proven to highlight this offering. ‘Lucy’, as we call her, is a direct daughter of our tried and true donor Layla, Merit Socialite 48X. Maternal brothers include Rage, Kingsman, and Whiskey; all Merit high sellers going to notable seedstock operations.

Merit Rage 4031 - Maternal Brother to 5038

“Lucy” is a powerhouse that grabs your attention. She’s pretty without being a giraffe, big barrelled, easy fleshing and sound in her structure.

Merit Socialite 4195 - Grand dam of 5038

Shown at side of her dam, the pair were Champion Female at Canadian Junior Angus Showdown, Supreme Champion at Young Ranchmans. Lucy was also crowned Champion Angus female in the BMO Junior Beef Extreme at CWA. Her first calf Merit Judge 7042 is a herd sire at Bar JV Angus in Montana. Second calf is a Unit daughter who is in her first year of production and has raised a son with a WWR 102 and will be on a lot of breeder’s radar come spring when its time for prospective buyers to select a bull to use on heifers. He’s a cool calf! Her actual birth weights on her calves is 76, 64, & 80. Unfortunately, she slipped her 2019 calf in late December of 2018.

Merit Whiskey - Maternal Brother to 5038

Merit Renegade 8130 - Service Sire to 5038

In 2020 she raised a powerful Wisconsin daughter, that’s made a lot like her with a 113WWR. Lucy has been a ranch cow with no special treatment since her show career was over as a calf on her mother. The kids had planned to exhibit her at Showdown this past summer. She reminded us that she is a ranch cow when we haltered her to clean up for sale pics, lol. We feel she’s a real breeding piece and fortunately we have two daughters in herd. Everything is on the up and up with this tremendous female - Her feet have never been touched but she is developing a small crack on her front right claw. Also has a small tic of white on udder. We chose to mate her to Merit Renegade because we really like her Unit 2yr old and the job she was doing. It also adds another great cow family to the profile.

These outstanding Range Boss daughters are 7/8’s sisters, both raised by two year old dams. They have been favourites with visitors since they were babies and they are favourites of ours as well.

Merit Lady Ann 7065E - Dam of 9031

They are beautiful in their design, with substance of body, enough muscle, structural soundness and functionality to project them to be superior brood matrons. Their Unit mothers are just as similar as they are, feminine, bold bodied, and sound with beautiful udders. The kids had them on their list for their summer show projects. When events were cancelled early in the spring, these heifers were never separated from the main group and have continued to excel under the same management. The cow families they represent consistently produce at the top of our program. 9031’s great grand dam is a full sister to Merit Luke 3120 who left an excellent set of daughters here. 9043’s great grand dam raised Merit Sage, herdsire for Spruce View Angus.

Merit Paycheque 9002 - Service Sire to 9031 and 9043

These heifers are bred, on the same day, to Merit Paycheque. We feel strongly that the addition of his performance, fleshing ability and maternal heritage will make these two of the best investment opportunities of the sale season! Merit Flora 6078 “Fancy” has made a huge impact in a short period of time. Sam Elliot saw both AI and natural service here.

Merit Renegade 8130 - Maternal Brother to 6H, 9H, 12H and 14H

We purchased GDAR Insight 7201 in the spring of 2008 at the highly regarded Montana operation of Gartner-Denowh Angus Ranch. Insight added breed leading performance coupled with maternal strength, exceptional foot quality and large scrotals. His daughters are consistent in kind and have been very productive. Several have gone on to earn Elite designation by the CAA. His mother is a pathfinder dam. We used his son, Merit 77X, for many years. Now, after more than ten years, we chose this mating to hopefully re-introduce his influence while adding another great cow to the tabulation. The Insight sons from this flush will be highlights in our 2021 bull sale. These heifers are special. They’re future herd builders, the next piece of the puzzle. There are slight differences between them, however they all have tiny well spaced teats, great feet with lots of heel and good dispositions. This is your opportunity to select a future donor with an outcross yet highly proven pedigree. Selection to be made by January 1, 2021.

Sound structure, starting from the ground up. Fertility Calve unassisted Be maternally minded, but have a good disposition Have a good udder that will remain sound for a long productive life. • Wean a quality calf; one that makes the replacement female pen or a bull with the performance and soundness that our commercial customers demand.

WHAT WE EXPECT from our females

• • • • •

That’s what we are all about!

• We only use EPD’s and performance records as tools. Stockmanship does NOT require a computer! • They’ve got to look good, life’s too short to look at ugly cattle. • Easy fleshing with the capacity and ability to rustle for forage. • Be productive on grass and hay. High input females are self eliminating. • The past 5 years here have been tough, the cattle have to be tough. • They’re not perfect and don’t always work out. That’s just the nature of the business. We don’t make fantastical claims. • We are always striving to make them better and more efficient. We love nothing more to see our customers success both commercially and as seedstock. • Constantly studying and analyzing our cattle brings us joy and satisfaction.

Galaxy caught our eye in the marshalling area at Canadian Western Agribition prior to the President’s Classic. We were able to purchase him privately the next morning. He went on to win his class in the Angus show the following day. The year prior his maternal brother caught our attention as well. His dam has been a solid producer for Cornish’s and she is still in production in their herd at 11 years of age. Galaxy is a no-holes type of bull, phenotypically attractive, extremely sound in his structure with a high quality foot design. His disposition is gentle and he’s an aggressive breeder. He walked with the entire group of yearling heifers and held his condition well. We think he will be a great asset for calving ease and producing progeny that both our commercial and seedstock customers will find appealing.
