Christine Vasiliades PUBLISHER & FOUNDER

PUBLISHER’S WELCOME 2020 has come and gone. Through all of this, I trust that everyone has learned something new about themselves. We’ve watched on as businesses have closed, modified, pivoted, and struggled.

Crystal Hunt PHOTOGRAPHY

Crystal Hunt is a landscape photographer from Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania. She is an avid outdoorsman and trout fisherman. After graduating from Boiling Springs High School in 1987, she served in the U.S. Army as a Chinese linguist then earned her Master’s Degree in Organizational Leadership Management. Crystal currently lives in a log home in the mountains near Pine Grove Furnace State Park. www.CrystalHuntPhotography.com // Cover Photo ©Crystal Hunt Photography

In the midst of it all, Live.Work.Play managed to launch both the Lancaster PA and Tampa Bay editions. Having no employees and managing four publications in two states that are 1,100 miles apart, I’ve learned a lot about myself as well. We have also increased our residential distribution and now work with a combined 325 Realtors, Builders, HOA communities, property managers, and lodging. This has led us to not only local, but national and global, readership. Thank YOU for reading! It feels like we’re finally on the other side of this. As the year progresses, I look forward to continued growth and supporting even more independent business owners. You’ll find more than two dozen brand new businesses in this year’s Central PA edition. Let’s show them our support! I hope you enjoy The Best of Central PA!

the history of ARTICLE BY MELISSA DANG

In 1986, there was a dream in the mind of local businessman Mike Trephan. He envisioned an “oldtime” riverboat sailing the waters of Harrisburg and quickly set out raising money to make this dream a reality. In 1988, the Pride of the Susquehanna first sailed and the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society was formed to run it. Throughout the season you can’t miss the sight of this timeless red and white striped boat navigating the Susquehanna. The mission of this riverboat is to attract tourism to Harrisburg, as well as bringing education and the arts to the city through an unforgettable venue.

remarkable stained glass ceiling. The restroom doors and decorative oars are original to the RMS Queen Mary, the famed ocean liner that sailed before and throughout WWII. The Pride is much smaller than the Queen Mary, but a length of 65 feet, a width of 24 feet, and a weight of approximately 100 tons makes her the largest vessel in Central Pennsylvania. In 2016, the Riverboat Society celebrated their one millionth passenger; a landmark that many originally thought impossible. Beyond the glitzy dinner cruises and live music events, the riverboat also broadens its impact through education. The Susquehanna River School, a “floating classroom” for all ages, first sailed in 1998. Aboard, students learn about the History, ecology, and environmental issues affecting the Susquehanna River and its inhabitants. As the sunset dances across the water and the radiant light begins to illuminate the city and the many famous bridges of Harrisburg, tourists and locals alike enjoy the unforgettable sights and sounds of the Central Pennsylvania’s delight. The Pride of the Susquehanna sails the delicate balance between the past and the future.

The Pride is one of the only six remaining authentic riverboats left in America, run only through paddlewheel power. The paddlewheels are used for propulsion and steering—no propellers or jets are needed. This unique craft serves as a gem for the local area, just a few blocks from the Pennsylvania State Capitol. The riverboat’s construction was funded by local residents and businesses. The Pride is a reimagining of the riverboats from the late 1800’s, and that historic charm can be found throughout. Her interior contains a beautifully polished brass and copper interior and a LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

One of the largest museums in the U.S. that portrays the whole story of the American Civil War. OPEN DAILY 1 Lincoln Circle in Reservoir Park HARRISBURG, PA 717.260.1861

TH

Welcome to the National Civil War Museum The sweeping drive through Reservoir Park gives an unparalleled view of the majestic building atop the highest point in Harrisburg ~ The National Civil War Museum. As you approach the entrance to the Museum, you will be struck anew at the Moment of Mercy statue by sculptor Terry Jones, framed by the walk of valor. Take a moment to reflect here on the mercy given to the fallen soldiers by one brave man, Confederate Sergeant Richard Kirkland, during the Battle of Fredricksburg, forever memorialized in bronze. Once inside the Museum, let the grand rotunda’s splendor take you back to a time of sweeping staircases and grand dreams before you enter the Museum galleries and are forever changed by the history you will see. The National Civil War Museum will take you back in time to learn about the American Civil War, where over 620,000 Americans perished. The Museum seeks to tell the whole story of this most troubled chapter in American History while focusing on the issues, the people, and the lives that were affected and contains over 25,000 artifacts. A self-guided tour takes you through 17 galleries illustrating the war and all its consequences, beginning with A House Divided, 1850-1860: a timeline of incidents and issues prior to the Civil War and concludes with Lincoln: War & Remembrance: a retrospective of the war; the martyred President; the role of veterans after the war. In addition to our static displays and artifacts, our award-winning We the People video program, the continuing story of ten characters, lasts about one hour and concludes in the museum’s theater, as the Nation’s joy turns to sorrow in a 16-minute film discussing the end of the war and the assassination of President Lincoln. The vistas that are seen from the Museum grounds and our covered Observatory span four counties and the scenic Susquehanna River narrow. Also visible is the area of Harrisburg that contained Camp Curtin, the largest camp of rendezvous in the North during the war. The capital of Pennsylvania and a major rail hub for men and materials, Harrisburg played a vital role in the Civil War and was threatened by the invasion of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Before you leave the Museum, stop by the gift shop for that special gift and browse our amazing stock of books, some autographed that you won’t find anywhere else.

DID YOU KNOW ?

// Photo © George Sheldon / Shutterstock.com

• Chris Millard was a student at Elizabethtown Middle School in 1972. Shortly before he lost his three-year battle with cancer, he wrote a story about a great knight who sought out the four diamonds of courage, wisdom, honesty and strength, in order to be released from the grips of an evil sorceress. When Chris died of cancer later that year, his parents Charles and Irma Millard, included his story, “The Four Diamonds” in the package of papers they sent to Herb Kraybill at Hershey Medical Center, who was organizing a fund to help children with cancer. The Four Diamonds fund is now supported by THON, an annual fundraiser organized by students at Penn State University. Students have raised more than $180 million to conquer childhood cancer. • Hummelstown was founded as Fredrickstown in 1762 by a German couple, Frederick and Rosina Hummel. They purchased the land for 200 pounds sterling, then divided the area into building lots, which were sold to German settlers. During the mid 19th century, the Union Canal along Swatara Creek was an important factor in the development of the local economy, promoting trade and transportation. Today 200 pounds would be $255.64 • Milton Hershey built the first modern chocolate factory and model town. He wanted to create a self-reliant community where his employees could reside close to work. Hershey also wanted the community to be a place where his employees could have comfortable homes, an inexpensive public transportation system, a quality public school system, and extensive recreational and cultural opportunities. Mr. Hershey had tickets to board the Titanic, but didn’t follow through with the trip. We’re glad he didn’t!

The Apple Festival is held annually on the last Saturday in September in New Cumberland Borough Park.

• Presented annually by the Mechanicsburg Chamber of Commerce, Jubilee Day is the largest, longest running one day street fair on the east coast attracting up to 70,000 attendees. The annual event features more than 300 vendors from near and far offering food, games, arts & crafts, business information, retail products, amusement rides, and more. There is a children’s area with activities for the very young including a free petting zoo and live entertainment on two stages. Admission is free. • On the first Saturday in June is Foundry Day, a juried arts and crafts show. It’s held along the Children’s Lake on Front Street in Boiling Springs. Craft makers, organizations, and food vendor booths line the street from the Memorial Clock Tower, along the lake, right up to the walking bridge.

Most probably know the gist of Groundhog Day: Each February 2, America’s most famous groundhog and Pennsylvania native, Punxsutawney Phil, emerges from his burrow, and looks for his shadow. If he sees it, the legend goes, six more weeks of winter lie ahead. And if he doesn’t see his shadow, there will be an early spring. But did you know that Phil is married? Phil has had many wives. While Phil has an extended lifespan from drinking the elixir of life, his wives do not partake so they pass away like normal groundhogs do. Phil always finds love again, though—and always with a groundhog named Phyllis.

May we tempt you with our apples?

Your adventure awaits...

Located along the Anclote River where it intersects the Gulf of Mexico, Tarpon Springs is a rich mixture of culture, customs, and families. Its waterfront is a working seaport and shopping district with the unmistakable feel of a Grecian fishing village. Its downtown is a showcase of proud historic buildings and homes from the gracious Victorian era. It’s an unlikely blend of histories, and one you’ll find only in Tarpon Springs, Pinellas County’s oldest city. 76

| LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Past Indian history in this beautiful coastal community predates the arrival of the first settlers in the early 1800’s. Soon after, the advent of the railroad and the building of the Anclote Key Lighthouse brought many positive changes to the area. The town’s Victorian influences stem from the late 1800’s to about 1905, when the seaside village became a playground for wealthy Northerners. These seasonal residents built luxurious estates along Spring Bayou. Soon Tarpon Springs gained fame as one of the great health centers and winter resorts of the time.

Welcome Center 1 N. Pinellas Avenue Monday–Friday, 10 am–5 pm Visitors’ Center 100 Dodecanese Boulevard 7 days, 10:30 am–3:30 pm 727-937-6109 TarponSpringsChamber.org

Two Cultures, One City... Tarpon Springs Rich sponge beds, discovered in the 1880’s, spawned a flourishing new industry. In 1905, young sponge divers were recruited from the Dodecanese Islands of Greece. The sponge industry thrived, as did the Greek community, and the town’s focus changed. Some of the Greek immigrants who came to the area continue their traditional trade of sponge diving. Today Tarpon Springs is a showcase of both cultures, from its vintage Victorian era mansions and buildings to its lively Greek traditions and community.

Experience the flavor of Greece and the excitement of an authentic working waterfront on the Sponge Docks. Visit authentic Greek restaurants and bakeries, sponge diving and sightseeing tour boats, unique shops, antique shops and art galleries, and the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral, home of the largest Epiphany celebration in the Western Hemispheres – No Passport Required!

500,000 individuals helped. 50 million meals provided. Elevated food insecurity in central Pennsylvania can be calculated with these staggering statistics. The true impact of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s mission during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, is measured by the gratefulness of the people it serves, the simple comfort that a box of fresh food provides that kept families going.

“With 5 kids home when schools shutdown and my job being rescinded due to the pandemic, the food provided at the distribution was a life saver. ” - Brittany, Lycoming County Scan QR code in corner to hear more from Brittany.

A 40% increase in demand, disruption in the food supply chain, and safety protocols for volunteers posed challenges to the mission of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank as it launched a significant response to the COVID-19 crisis. During the pandemic, the Food Bank provided hundreds of thousands of Crisis Response Boxes of healthy, shelfstable food including millions of pounds of fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein. The generosity of Central Pennsylvanians allows the Food Bank to keep up with the need through the duration of the COVID crisis and continue to support Central Pennsylvanians during the prolonged recovery period. With your support, we will continue to ensure no one in central Pennsylvania will go hungry.
