PUBLISHER & FOUNDER

PUBLISHER’S WELCOME 2020 has come and gone. Through all of this, I trust that everyone has learned something new about themselves. We’ve watched on as businesses have closed, modified, pivoted, and struggled.

Emily Fogelman

GRAPHIC DESIGN & LAYOUT

Emily Fogelman is a freelance graphic designer in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. She has been part of the Live.Work.Play. team for over two years and has been a designer for more than 17 years. She is a graduate of Penn State University and the The Art Institutes. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family. www.EmilyFogelman.com

In the midst of it all, Live.Work.Play managed to launch both the Lancaster PA and Tampa Bay editions. Having no employees and managing four publications in two states that are 1,100 miles apart, I’ve learned a lot about myself as well. We have also increased our residential distribution and now work with a combined 325 Realtors, Builders, HOA communities, property managers, and lodging. This has led us to not only local, but national and global, readership. Thank YOU for reading! It feels like we’re finally on the other side of this. As the year progresses, I look forward to continued growth and supporting even more independent business owners. Let’s show them our support! I hope you enjoy The Best of South Central PA!

Columbia DID YOU KNOW? • Columbia was almost the capital of the United States. When Congress voted in 1790, Columbia lost by one vote to Washington D.C. • Later, Columbia missed out on being named the state capital, in favor of Harris Ferry, which later became Harrisburg. • Situated along the Susquehanna River, Columbia was founded in 1728, and was originally known as Wright’s Ferry. • The market at 15 S. Third Street in Columbia was built in 1869. Beneath the building is a dark basement known as The Dungeon which includes 7 cells. The cells still exist today in their original form! LIVE. WORK. PLAY.

Welcome to the National Civil War Museum The sweeping drive through Reservoir Park gives an unparalleled view of the majestic building atop the highest point in Harrisburg ~ The National Civil War Museum. As you approach the entrance to the Museum, you will be struck anew at the Moment of Mercy statue by sculptor Terry Jones, framed by the walk of valor. Take a moment to reflect here on the mercy given to the fallen soldiers by one brave man, Confederate Sergeant Richard Kirkland, during the Battle of Fredricksburg, forever memorialized in bronze. Once inside the Museum, let the grand rotunda’s splendor take you back to a time of sweeping staircases and grand dreams before you enter the Museum galleries and are forever changed by the history you will see. The National Civil War Museum will take you back in time to learn about the American Civil War, where over 620,000 Americans perished. The Museum seeks to tell the whole story of this most troubled chapter in American History while focusing on the issues, the people, and the lives that were affected and contains over 25,000 artifacts. A self-guided tour takes you through 17 galleries illustrating the war and all its consequences, beginning with A House Divided, 1850-1860: a timeline of incidents and issues prior to the Civil War and concludes with Lincoln: War & Remembrance: a retrospective of the war; the martyred President; the role of veterans after the war. In addition to our static displays and artifacts, our award-winning We the People video program, the continuing story of ten characters, lasts about one hour and concludes in the museum’s theater, as the Nation’s joy turns to sorrow in a 16-minute film discussing the end of the war and the assassination of President Lincoln. The vistas that are seen from the Museum grounds and our covered Observatory span four counties and the scenic Susquehanna River narrow. Also visible is the area of Harrisburg that contained Camp Curtin, the largest camp of rendezvous in the North during the war. The capital of Pennsylvania and a major rail hub for men and materials, Harrisburg played a vital role in the Civil War and was threatened by the invasion of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Before you leave the Museum, stop by the gift shop for that special gift and browse our amazing stock of books, some autographed that you won’t find anywhere else.

Lancaster County currently has 28 intact covered bridges. Also referred to as kissing bridges, they provide a brief moment of privacy to couples walking across them. But the real reason for the covering is to protect the underlying wooden supports from excess weathering allowing the bridge to last much longer. At a time when most traffic involved horses, the wooden sides would also prevent the horses from veering into the water. Pennsylvania has the largest number of covered bridges in the nation. Today, 219 bridges remain in 40 counties.

Most probably know the gist of Groundhog Day: Each February 2, America’s most famous groundhog and Pennsylvania native, Punxsutawney Phil, emerges from his burrow, and looks for his shadow. If he sees it, the legend goes, six more weeks of winter lie ahead. And if he doesn’t see his shadow, there will be an early spring. But did you know that Phil is married? Phil has had many wives. While Phil has an extended lifespan from drinking the elixir of life, his wives do not partake so they pass away like normal groundhogs do. Phil always finds love again, though—and always with a groundhog named Phyllis.

LOCAL AUTHOR

Melissa Hurd Voice of the Broken

Melissa Hurd tells how she grew up in Potter and Adams counties, Pennsylvania, moved through the foster care system, and suffered abuse only to grow up and become an abuser herself. Then God intervened. “The Voice of the Broken” is deep, reflective, and rich with a gritty humility that speaks to the power of God to change lives, redirect hearts, and bring good out of even the worst of experiences
