The concept The ever growing concern of decreasing natural resources will consequently leave the next generation or even this generation with the opportunity to create an alternative means of transport suitable for people with diverse needs. Noteworthy solutions need to be in place for the future in order for people to be transported in an environmentally and sustainable manner. With the reduction of oil and natural resources, designers have been given the challenge to provide a need for a vehicle which can replace the way commuters travel today. A Human Powered Vehicle is one way in which we can go about changing the way people commute. With modern advances in technology, this can create HPV to be durable, sustainable, practical and individualised to suit peoples changing needs. One small group of people I have focused on is the suburban mother. Often, these are women who are not in the paid work force or part time workers who have young children and tend to drive large people movers in and around the suburbs. In a day, she would most likely make many small trips over small distances to kinder, day care, school and the shops. In order to design a Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) for a mother it had to act in a similar manner as a functional car and more specifically a ‘people mover’. It had to provide transport for more than one person as well provide room for bags, shopping, sporting equipment and multiple children aged between 0-5 years of age. My concept is designed to meet this woman’s needs. It has a safe and shelted capsual for children which provides ample storage, can transport around 3 people at one time and provides a comfortable and ergonomic ride for the mother.

In order to determine if this HPV is environmentally friendly a RAT or Rapid Assessment Tool has been used to assess the environmental impact. This HPV produced a RAT score of 1660. In relation to other products this has a high environmental impact score due to the manufacturing process. The production of the HPV uses a high level energy due to the amount of Aluminium, transportation of OEM components and rotomolded parts used in the process. However, while the RAT score may be high, this product has been designed to last a long time and not have a short life span. By maximising the life cycle phase of this HPV the high level of energy used in the manufacturing is averaged out over its life span. In effect this only creates an impact during the initial stages of manufacture and reduces the impacts during the usage phase.
