in this issue: Welcome to our Annual Bodywork issue—in this holiday season of giving and connecting, we invite you to also remember yourself. It’s possibly more important now than ever, to remember and replenish ourselves as we take on and balance our lives with some inward journeys for the winter. On page 8, Denise LaBarre explores Bodywork for the Whole Being. She shares with us information on how to find the right healing practitioner best suited to meet our unique needs. The Ancient Origins of Lomi Lomi are explored by Jody Mountain on page 12. Learn about the many aspects of specialization in terms of healing and maintaining wellness, that were once primary to Ancient Hawaiians who lived as one with the land. These practices are still important and can offer great benefits and serve as a vehicle for deep transformation and healing. Licensed Acupuncturist Alan Schroepfer answers the question Why Acupuncture? on page 16. Here, you can review some of the literature and anecdotes in support of this age-old healing technique. Gain insight into The Healing Power of Reiki in an article by Allison Jacobson on page 18. A Reiki session has the ability to bring balance into your body mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually, and can empower your body to do what it is really meant to do – heal itself. BODYWORK for the whole being

We are complex beings. Complete healing must involve body, mind, spirit and the emotion that connects them.

by Denise LaBarre

Bodywork can help heal on many levels and keep us healthy throughout our lives. Maui is a hub of alternative healers who combine various modalities into their own signature style. Learning a little more about the terms and the processes involved can help you find a bodyworker that suits you, now. Massage feels good and meets our basic need for touch. Beyond that, it increases circulation and offers a host of other physical benefits. Fall/winter is a great time to slow down a bit, turn inward, and receive bodywork. There are so many options: deep pressure, lymphatic drainage, hot rocks, sound, yogic stretching, lights, crystals… You can find just about any kind of style, focus and combination if you look. I recommend asking your body what it wants to move or change and how much. Do you need subtle, gentle 8

Living Aloha

|

movement or do you want to move big, intense energy? Do you want to address stuck emotional energy or avoid it for now? Are you open to integrating all levels at once? Can the bodyworker hold space for what you want to move? Some bodyworkers have a wide range. Others specialize deeply. Your body will let you know where to start. For example, the therapeutic work I do combines massage (body), a background in psychotherapy (mind), and shamanic journey (intuition/ spirit) with an emphasis on moving emotional energy through the whole system. What does all that mean? That means at the least, you get a great massage. We can talk – a lot or not. The energy of your “issues” arises as you talk and my work helps to move it through and out. We might talk about your childhood, write down the destructive messages that constantly play in the background

november–december 2015

of your mind, and set them on fire (shamanic play). I have a trampoline in my back yard that I use to shake things up, get energy moving, and invite in fun! Most of all, I listen to the intuitive guidance, from your body, through my hands. No two sessions look or feel the same, even for the same person. The emphasis is on experiencing the emotional energy physically. Once you feel it, it can move out – forever, if you so choose. Feeling the energy sadness or anger you carry is usually much less awful than your fear of it. It’s the resistance that feels like suffering. Whatever the techniques used, breathing is always your portal inward. Whether or not the bodyworker reminds you, make sure to breathe deeply when you’re on the table. Your breath is the greatest energy mover.

The field of bodywork is expanding and evolving at an exponential rate. We need it to help shift our bodies along with the planet. However, our vocabulary to express working with the complex and subtle energies of the human body haven’t expanded as widely as our intuitive understanding.

Don’t get hung up on the terms All bodywork moves energy but the term “energy work” implies a focus on more subtle energy, sometimes with very light or no touch at all. When people ask me “Do you do energy work?” I ask what they mean by that. The way I see it, it’s all energy work, just on various levels. I call myself Healing Catalyst rather than a “healer” because I catalyze—set in motion—healing without being the one who does the healing. I feel that is up to the client, and the divine. I also call myself a “Body Whisperer” because I communicate with the body intuitively the way a “Horse Whisperer” communicates with horses to learn what they need. But these are just names. The proof is in the work.

Bodyworkers use terms in different combinations – bioenergetics refers to the energy flowing through a living system; somatic means “of the body.” “Integrative” and “transformative” are great words but you may need to ask what they mean to the bodyworker that uses them. Look up copyrighted modalities to see if they offer what you think they do. Individuals tend to add their own flourishes the more experience they get with a technique. When in doubt, ask.

How to find a bodywork match: • A sk your friends, colleagues, and family. They will know if someone they’ve worked with is a potential match for you. • L ook online. You can get a feel for someone from a website, but realize that the proof is in their touch, not in their graphics and layout. • U se your intuition to feel it out. Then, as with any health provider, you ultimately have to meet the person to see if the style and energies match.

• T iming—Sometimes it’s a matter of timing. An approach that may not work for you now might be a match in the future. A bodyworker’s offerings may change, as will your needs. • Books/workshops—If they’ve written a book or give workshops, check those out. You can see if the work fits you—often for a fraction of the cost of private sessions. • Hotel Spas/Healing establishments—Booking a massage at a hotel or healing office usually assures you that the bodyworker has all the proper credentials and (usually) a certain level of professionalism. If you are relatively new to bodywork, going to a larger establishment is probably worth the additional cost. Plus, they often have a hot tub, sauna, or other goodies to round out your bodily indulgence. • A sk questions/communicate. At an establishment with many massage therapists, you can ask about the therapists’ experience. Keep in mind that the skill level and experience of the front desk staff can be very different from the person who will ultimately touch you. Ask questions, go with an open mind,

and communicate what you do and don’t want. Even highly intuitive people can’t read your mind—and it’s your body. You may not find an exact match every time you try a new bodyworker but sometimes going to someone who doesn’t help you actually catalyzes clarity about what you do need, instead. So with all these variables, how do you find the right match for what you need, now? Ask questions and use your intuition! The list in the Green Pages in the back of this magazine is a great place to start.

THE ANCIENT ORIGINS

OF LOMI LOMI

by Jody Mountain Ancient Indigenous peoples lived as one with the land. Their harmonious and synergistic relationship in nature was seamless. Food, clothing, recreation, healing and spirituality were each experienced within a harmonious whole. What we perceive today as separate healing modalities: Lomi Lomi Massage, La’au Lapa’au (Plant Medicine), Pule (prayer) and even Lua (Hawaiian Martial Art) were, in various forms, a part of daily life. Growing up with the land, it was a natural learning to discover

what parts of the ‘Ohana (family) could assist when faced with imbalance or illness. Since every form of Life was considered family by the Ancient Hawaiians, this would include the body, emotions, thoughts, spirit, plants, rocks, elements, motion, touch and attention. In this way, plant remedies, healing touch, massage tools, and the energetics of attention were uncovered and nurtured. According to the earliest records, everyone grew up absorbing aspects of healing from the land, elders, and their own experience.

Kahuna Lomi Lomi Often, families would gravitate towards specific conditions or techniques such as pregnancy & birthing, skeletal manipulation, muscular strains, sprains and

bone setting. Some traditions included cleansing sauna therapies, poultices, purging, prayer, topical or internal herbs, spiritual counseling, or ho’oponopono, in preparation, or as part of the healing session. While everyday applications were part of the fabric of society, those who were chosen for in-depth study, or who mastered certain aspects of the healing arts, became Kahuna (experts in their field). The Kahuna would embody a broader, deeper spectrum in their area of expertise. They were connected with all aspects of the illness, remedy, environment and particular method needed for restoring balance in the whole person. Kahuna Lomi Lomi specializing in the art of bone setting, for example, were

often knowledgeable in ‘Lua’, the Hawaiian martial art — absorbing a relationship with the bones, joints and deeper body structures, both for battle and healing. Kahuna Lomi Lomi specialized in a wide range of modalities, derived from the need for therapeutic application. Their fields of knowledge were vast and results could be stunningly effective. Lomi Lomi covered a wide range of ailments from digestive disorders, convulsions, fractures, chills, fever and swelling, to pain and poor eyesight. The healing experts of Ancient Hawai’i offered methods and protocol too numerous to list here, applicable at every stage of Life, some even possessing the knowledge of how to bring a person back from the brink of death.

Ke Ala Hoku — Pathway to the Stars While Lomi Lomi was practiced seamlessly with herbal medicine, in its even more ancient origins, it was also performed as a spiritual practice. ‘Lomi Lomi Nui’, (‘The Great Massage’), was a rite of passage practiced exclusively in designated he’iau or temples for a minimum of 10 hours. This sacred form of bodywork comes primarily from the Spiritual traditions of the pre-Polynesian Hawaiians, who inhabited the islands for thousands of years. These mystical peoples held the belief that Spirit inhabits all kaona (levels) of matter, including the human body.

Kahuna practitioners would refine their ability to work with the various access points of energy, spirit, light and information in their own bodies, allowing a pathway of transformation to open. This was reflected in one of its original names: ‘Ke Ala Hoku’ (Pathway to the Stars). In addition to its many therapeutic effects, this sacred rite was designed to bring initiates to an expanded experience of their place in the Universe, creating more possibility of living in the best possible alignment with themselves, their families, communities and environment.

Though few true Kupuna (elders) with the old knowledge survive, some in the younger generations have preserved what they could of this ancient art. As a result, many versions of Lomi Lomi are now practiced throughout the islands and worldwide. Most forms of Lomi Lomi, have been put into two or three different ‘schools’, distilled from the knowledge of hundreds of family lines.

and relaxing massage, consisting of long, smooth strokes with the forearms and hands, and deeper work with the elbows or fingers. Certain techniques will be applied for specific conditions such as the various stages of birth including pre-natal care, labor, childbirth, after birth and infant care. The surviving body of knowledge also includes common ailments such as sciatic pain, migraine headache, digestive disorders, and fractures, among others. A few forms of Lomi Lomi using the feet have also survived, imparting a different quality of energy and pressure for skeletal alignment, muscle

and connective tissue tension. Some practitioners today, with additional training, also combine herbal medicine with the practice of Lomi Lomi.

Ke Ala Hoku Today Ke Ala Hoku is probably the rarest surviving form of Lomi Lomi today. While it maintains the essence of its ancient roots, sessions are typically 2 to 3 hours instead of 10. Therapeutic Lomi Lomi techniques might be included, however these are applied with no intention to heal or fix. why Acupuncture? by Alan Schroepfer, LAc Acupuncture is one of the most common fields of alternative medicine used by westerners to complement their Western medical therapies. Its popularity is growing year in and year out and its efficacy in treating many complaints is becoming well documented. Indeed, as early as 1998, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) printed the following: “ … promising results have emerged, for example, showing efficacy of acupuncture in adult postoperative and chemotherapy nausea and vomiting and in postoperative dental pain. There are other situations, such as addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, osteoarthritis, low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma, in which acupuncture may be useful as an adjunct treatment or an acceptable alternative or be included in a comprehensive management program.” 1 A more recent JAMA Internal Medicine article (formerly Archive of Internal Medicine) reported on a study from October 2012, which found that acupuncture significantly reduced chronic back and neck pain, osteoarthritis and headache. 2 And finally, a study just out in the publication Autonomic Neuroscience shows a direct link between stimulation of areas of the brain and their corresponding acupuncture points used to relieve pain, nausea and other disorders as shown on MRI. 3 So the evidence is mounting in acupuncture’s favor— but just what is acupuncture? The term “acupuncture” describes a family of procedures involving the stimulation of points on the body using a variety of techniques. The acupuncture technique that has been most often studied scientifically, involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles 16

that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation. Practiced in China and other Asian countries for thousands of years, acupuncture is one of the key components of traditional Chinese medicine. As a traditional Chinese medical practitioner and acupuncturist, I have seen the changes my patients have experienced from this ancient and venerated healing modality technique. Let me start with anecdotes from my grandmothers. Fannie, was having chronic back pain. I spoke with her about acupuncture and we decided I would treat her once per week in her home. She improved almost immediately. She had less back pain, more energy, a better appetite and my aunts said she looked vibrant. Irene, developed shingles while I was away. She tried what she could with western medicine but nothing seemed to work. When I returned, I started treating her with acupuncture every other day and treated her for two weeks with Chinese herbal therapies. Within the first week of treatment her pain disappeared. Within two weeks of treatment the lesions abated and were pink and healing. I later treated her for neuropathy in her legs, and vertigo. She had great improvement in both cases. She admitted her doubts and now she shares her story constantly to get others to try acupuncture and alternative medicines. One of my patients had a wedge resection of the right lower lobe of his lung. Approximately 8 months post-surgery he developed severe intercostal pain from nerve entrapment as a result of the surgery. He went to pain management specialists who prescribed analgesic patches, capsaicin cream, physical therapy and pharmaceuticals for relief. All to no avail. He came to

me seeking relief from chronic symptoms. While it took approximately six weeks of weekly treatments, he is now free from the intercostal pain. All of the studies cited and my anecdotal evidence supports the assertion that acupuncture relieves pain. Acupuncture has been employed as a health care modality for over 3,000 years and there are many studies that support its benefits. In my practice I have seen acupuncture relieve symptoms of stress and calm the mind, reduce and relieve pain, improve immunity and overall health and reduce or increase blood pressure depending on the need and the specific points stimulated.

acupuncturists charge less than the going rate for a good massage—making this affordable care for almost everyone. In addition, in the state of Hawaii, acupuncture is covered under auto insurance and is also included in many health insurance plans. So the question, “Why Acupuncture?” Because it has been shown to relieve symptoms and suffering on many levels and is a well-suited adjunct to western medical care. 1. N eural mechanisms of acupuncture as revealed by fMRI studies Autonomic Neuroscience (2015)

Indeed, the mission of almost every practitioner I’ve encountered is to relieve their patients’ suffering. Most Alan Schroepfer, LAc has an extensive background in the healing arts. He graduated from the Maui Academy of Healing Arts School of Massage in 1998, and has since been a massage therapist and acupuncturist in Four and Five-Star Spas on Maui. The Healing Power of by Allison Jacobson

Reiki

In today’s world, where we are searching for ways to live happier, healthier lives, Reiki is an alternative healing method that can bring us many benefits. Reiki is a form of energy healing that can be traced back thousands of years to ancient Tibet. It was rediscovered in the late 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui of Japan, a Buddhist Monk. Reiki was then brought to the West via Hawaii in the 1930s by Mrs. Hawayo Takata, a Kauai native. In recent years, with the power of the mainstream media, Reiki has become more widely known and is now accepted as a standard healing practice. Hospitals and doctors are integrating Reiki as a complementary treatment to surgery, cancer treatments, organ replacement and more and are finding positive results for their patients. Reiki has been scientifically shown to speed healing, decrease pain levels, and relax the mind and body. Reiki is not a healing modality reserved just for gifted healers. We all have innate healing abilities, whether we are conscious of them or not, so anyone can learn and practice Reiki. Reiki practitioners are simply a channel for the universal life force energy, the same energy that pulses through the universe giving life to all living things. Practitioners study and train under a Reiki Master to become attuned to the Reiki healing energy. This allows the practitioner’s energy pathways to be open to transmitting energy to their clients. During a Reiki session, the practitioner places their hands on or above the recipient’s body. The positive energy and healing intention flows into the recipient and balances and heals the energy in the body, including clearing blocked energy centers or chakras. As the energy flows from their hands into the recipient’s body, 18

it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which supports the client’s body to begin to heal itself through regeneration and nourishment of the body, and also strengthens the immune system. With the hustle and bustle of daily life, to-do lists, and responsibilities, our sympathetic nervous system (our fight-or-flight response) is almost always active, as we are constantly on the go, overly stimulated and in a state of stress. This weakens our immune system and opens us up to illness, injury and a laundry list of other negative effects. When the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, our body’s healing abilities are most powerful. Reiki is a non-invasive, natural and safe method of healing that can work in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery. It can help to support all areas of your life, including, but not limited to, physical ailments or illness, chronic pain, stress, anxiety, emotional trauma, grief, relationships and personal growth (goals, intentions, and fears). Reiki is not a religion, nor does it conflict with any religious beliefs. And for the skeptics out there, you don’t have to believe in Reiki in order to receive benefits. This is a universal healing energy that everyone can benefit by. A Reiki session balances the body mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually, enabling the body to do what it is really meant to do – heal itself. It promotes relaxation and stress reduction, increases feelings of peace and overall wellbeing, strengthens the immune system, reduces or eliminates pain and provides countless other healing benefits. By working on all levels, Reiki helps the body to relax into a state that allows optimal self-healing. One of my clients, Kat Parks, shares the results of her Reiki session: “Even though she was not touching me, I could physically feel her ‘touch’ through the energy she was manipulating in my body. About ten minutes passed, and when I arose, I

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is derived from two Japanese words: “rei” which means universal, spirit, divine and “ki” which means breath of life, life force energy So Reiki is universal life force energy felt completely healed where I was previously experiencing pain, and totally revitalized in my whole being.” Because Reiki is an energy healing method, it does not have to be done in person. It is just as effective when done from a distance. Just like your radio receives radio waves being transmitted from far away, Reiki can be transmitted from any distance. The healing energy that the client receives is the same as in person. Reiki practitioners can also treat themselves, as well as animal companions. Consider exploring how Reiki can benefit you. Where do you need help? Reiki can support each and every one of us, mind, body and spirit, and help us to live a happier, healthier life.

Craniosacral Therapy Balancing Natural Rhythms for Vibrant Health by Eva Tree Blum, LMP, CCST

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle yet powerful method of bodywork that facilitates your body’s inherent ability to heal itself. CST pays special attention to the cranium, spine and sacrum, all of which are linked by a continuous membrane which houses the brain and the central nervous system. Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) surrounds the brain and the spinal column, supplying the central nervous system with vital nutrients. CSF washes and cleanses every cell in the brain, and provides an incredible opportunity for healing. When the CSF becomes sluggish or restricted due to injury or trauma of the body, many compensatory problems occur. Consider that our bodies are made up of 70% fluid, and we begin to appreciate the value of this fluid, this ‘breath of life,’ this ‘potency,’ within the system. Dr. A. T. Still, the father of

Osteopathy stated that “fluid, ‘the great river of life,’ must be tapped and the withering fields irrigated at once, or the harvest of health be lost forever.” With this in mind, this fluid-based work has tremendous application in the health field. CST offers profound benefits for the release of physical, mental and emotional tension, and enhances the function of every system in the body. It can be very helpful in treating musculoskeletal issues, such as whiplash, TMJD, sciatica, chronic pain, migraines, birth trauma, depression, PTSD, organ function, digestive issues and recovery from surgery. As my teacher, Beth Cachat, would often say, “CST treats head injury to sprained ankles, and everything in between…”

This work is rooted in Anatomy and Physiology but I believe it bridges beautifully with the deepest mystery of how we know ourselves as energetic and spiritual beings. As a practitioner of CST, I seek to hold a neutral mirror for my clients’ systems and reflect back to them their inherent wholeness and the forces and means in which they can access their CST offers an deepest truths and opportunity resolutions from past traumas. For to reclaim me, CST is about joy, vibrancy, recovering and re-membering spaciousness, who we truly are grace, vitality and as vastly gorgeous intelligent beings, optimal health. blessed with the opportunity of a life in a body. Biodynamic CST offers a profound and gentle way to find our way back ‘home.’

Chiropractors

a drug-free, hands-on approach by James A. Pleiss, DC

Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Doctors of Chiropractic (DC) mainly diagnose and treat back, neck, arm, leg and headache pain and are considered by definition primary care physicians as they are often the first doctor a patient will visit when experiencing back pain. Chiropractic is the largest alternative medical profession, and with the current amount of research regarding the efficacy of spinal manipulation, chiropractic is arguably more mainstream than alternative. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills, and when appropriate, they consult with and refer patients to other health practitioners. Some chiropractors specialize in orthopedics, sports injuries, neurology, nutrition, internal disorders, and/or diagnostic imaging. Chiropractic is considered an integral part of the back care team as noted in many guidelines published in this and other countries and many chiropractors have joined multidisciplinary spine care practices. Doctors of Chiropractic practice a drug-free, handson approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors believe that spinal vertebral dysfunction alters many important body functions by affecting the nervous system, and that skeletal imbalance through joint dysfunction, especially in the spine, can cause pain and/or dysfunction throughout the rest of the body. Chiropractors use spinal manipulation as their primary treatment of these conditions.

Chiropractic treatment has been proven to be safe and effective particularly for back and neck pain. Other conditions that chiropractors treat include, arm and leg pain, headaches and conservative management of extremity conditions. Many chiropractors also use water, light, massage, ultrasound, electric, and heat therapy and may apply supports such as straps, taping, and braces. Chiropractors may also counsel patients about wellness concepts such as nutrition, exercise, lifestyle changes, and stress management. This nondrug approach to treatment of musculoskeletal pain by chiropractors has become desirable, particularly when considering the potentially life threatening side effects of the medications commonly prescribed for back and neck pain. Chiropractic treatment is covered by most insurances in Hawaii including workers’ compensation, motor vehicle accident insurance, Medicare, most union plans, HMSA, UHA, HMAA, some Kaiser plans through American Specialty Health (ASH), and EUTF, amongst others.

James A. Pleiss, DC is a chiropractor in private practice located at Longevity Health Center at 2045 Main Street in Wailuku, Maui. He is currently an appointed member of the Hawaii Board of Chiropractic Examiners and has been Past President of the Hawaii State Chiropractic Association. His website is www.drjamesapleissdc.com

touch. Touch is one of the basic human needs in order to stay healthy and thriving.

by Miri Chamdi In the fifteen years that I’ve been a massage therapist, I’ve had the honor to touch people of all walks of life. I’ve touched people from different parts of the planet, men, women and children who need to be soothed and healed by touch. I truly love my work, touching people with the care and expertise I’ve developed over the years. Some people come to me with chronic pain they have been carrying for a long time. Some come with acute pain due to injury. Some come with pain which they have no clue why it is roaming in their bodies. Some pain is alleviated through one simple session, other pain requires more attention. I have had my own share of pain throughout the years. I myself went through extensive healing, with touch and other means. My body carried on the burden, suffering from past and present. I relate to those who come under my fingers, knowing exactly what it is like to be ridden with pain, with suffering. You might call it the wounded healer. Touching people’s crystallized tears became my passion. Their suffering was tangible under my hands. I worked with their pain, as they trusted my touch to help open and alleviate their wounds. I often massaged my growing son, as even his little happy self hung on to emotional turmoil at times. I massaged people’s cats and dogs. I loved how they vulnerably lay on their backs, stomachs exposed, devoted to my touch. I realized that almost all living creatures love to be touched, love to be taken care of and healed. 24

Three years ago I went through another transformation. Due to various reasons, I changed my diet to one which is based solely on plants. The main reason was that my eyes opened to the immense pain and suffering animals and the planet go through so we humans can enjoy the flavor of their flesh and byproducts. I asked myself serious and pressing questions. How congruent is it if I, as a massage therapist dedicated to alleviate some of the suffering people and their pets embody, could pay for the unimaginable suffering of other creatures? Creatures who have the desire to live and the ability to suffer just as much as anyone else. I visited some farms and saw the cows and sheep I was eating and feeding to my family. I touched them. When they felt safe enough with me, I slowly massaged them behind the ears. I felt through my fingers their relief. It didn’t feel any different than the relief my clients and their pets feel. The decision was made. I will not finance these creatures suffering any longer. As time went by, I noticed the effects of the plant based diet on my body and mind. I slept better, I moved more smoothly, my body ached less and my mind became sharper and clearer. As a therapist, I wanted to know the science behind these changes and so I began researching the health benefits of a plant based diet. I read peer reviewed articles, watched lectures given by medical doctors on the subject, listened to other health practitioners from the alternative medicine world on their own findings. One thing they all had in common is the subject of inflammation.

As a massage therapist I know that inflammation of muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints is the source of pain and suffering. So how is diet related to inflammation of the human machine? I will not flood you with all the extensive science, which is immense, but only bring one point to the table: acidity of the blood and its relationship to inflammation. Animal based protein and fat make our blood acidic. That in turn creates systematic inflammation, which in turn causes pain and suffering. It’s that simple. What did I do with that information? I studied it even further, incorporating my inquiries into my work.

Delivering

I began asking my clients about their diet. Most of them thought they were eating a healthy diet composed of lean meats, low fat dairy, fish, and of course fruits and vegetables. I shared with them the information I have come to study, asking them to eliminate animal products for one month from their diets and instead feed their bodies with whole, plant based foods. For some it was easy, others needed more time and more information. Across the board, those who went plant based noticed a significant difference in their body. The inflammation they experienced reduced and in turn, the pain and suffering lessened. These people also noticed a change in overall mood. When before, while eating animal products they were prone to irritability and mood swings, while on a plant based diet they felt lighter, calmer and more balanced.

the

Local Farmers

Market to

Your Door!

As I searched the subject deeper, I came across more information which is not talked about much in the world of science and nutrition, but is undoubtedly was still significant. When animals are being produced for human consumption, they go through various stages of stress. Behind the word stress, there is chemistry. It is called cortisol, the stress hormone. Whether it is through the consistent abuse in factory farms, or at the “check out line” right before being slaughtered, animals feel fear and stress while they listen to their fellow animals being slaughtered. This fear and stress is translated into immense amounts of cortisol flooding their bodies, the same flesh and byproducts we consume. So a lot of what we consume is cortisol saturated flesh and byproducts. How does it affect our own bodies? We could argue back and forth about the exact science of the matter, we could bring to the table conflicting studies and information. Yet, at the end of the day it comes to one simple concept. When we eat suffering, we suffer. Think about that for a moment. The energetic matter we put into our bodies will in turn be translated to the energetic matter we produce. Sometimes it is subtle, sometimes more profound.

I am not a doctor or a scientist. I am a massage therapist who simply did my own research on my own body and asked others to participate and be more pro active in their own healing. The results speak for themselves. We can name the effects in scientific terms such as “acidic blood”, “cortisol”, “saturated fat”, “condensed animal protein,” and so forth. We could also simplify it to match our layman life. Consuming less suffering produces less suffering.

It’s that simple.

Our distribution of over 12,000 printed copies every two months— directly targets the health-conscious community on Maui. 3 Tips for Advertisers our advertisers are very happy:

Besides publishing Living Aloha Magazine, our publisher has run the largest free magazine distribution network in the country for 37 years. They have assisted thousands of free magazines get optimal distribution aimed at getting results for their advertisers. Here are 3 things you need to know to calculate the value of your advertising dollars.

“ Living Aloha has been great at getting us in touch with many locals interested in sustainable farming methods as well as many tourists.” — Lew Abrams, Ahimsa Sanctuary Farms

3. T hen you want to know 1. T he first thing you should 2. D o not go by readership know is how many copies numbers. You want to know how many of those are are being printed by the the actual number printed. actually getting picked up publications you advertise Many publishers inflate their versus thrown away, when in. Some publications baffle numbers and multiply what the new issue comes out. you with how great their they print by anywhere from Many publications here on editorial, photos and layout 3 to 6 times and deceivingly Maui are distributed while are, but avoid telling you call it “readership”. After locations are closed and have what they actually print. Be many years of distribution no idea how many copies VERY cautious of a publisher experience, we know this is are actually getting picked that doesn’t disclose how false advertising. It would be up. Advertisers are paying for many copies they print. nice, but 3 to 6 people are advertising in issues that are not reading every copy. not even being picked up. We don’t like to see advertisers being taken advantage of. Plus, the waste really hurts How a magazine our environment. looks and reads www.magazinedistribution.org/clients.html

“ I have many new clients because of Living Aloha Magazine” — Josh Froberg, Maui Rolfer “ We love that Living Aloha Magazine and Leilani stand for the same principles. We get many people on our farm tour and sometimes the entire tour is people who read about us In Living Aloha.” — Laurelee Blanchard, Leilani Farm Sanctuary

is important, but getting advertisers response through good circulation is the key. Aloha!

the hidden effects of the

“SLIPPAH” by Josh Frohberg

We all recognize the slipper, or “slippah”, here in Hawaii: as iconic as sea turtles, cheerful, colorful, and worn by everyone. But the contoured soles and bright logos hide a nasty secret: the slipper is restricting the efficient function of your foot as you walk around. This lack of proper function leads to harder impacts on the ground, as more energy is transmitted up through the knees and into the torso from the rigidity of the calf, and this translates directly into more jarring spine movement from the foot hitting the ground. The tension is easily felt on the outside of the calf, causing an outward rotation of the feet in relation to the hips. This creates a less-than-perfect plane of movement for the knee to operate in, and also means other 36

muscles must adapt themselves to allow walking to happen. As these adaptations continue, more alterations are made in the body’s walking muscle pattern, showing up in symptoms such as tense calves, tight hips, cramped lower back, or the feeling of a pulled groin muscle. The more you walk in “slippahs”, the more the toes continue to point outward, and the tension through the body is unrelieved. As this process continues, the lower back usually becomes straighter and more rigid, creating

november–december 2015

a precarious situation for the intervertebral discs and the nerves that run around them. The outwards roll of the legs means the pelvis wants to tip forward, robbing the iliopsoas muscle of its strength, which compromises its function of raising the knee. In turn, this means the hip abductors and quadriceps must work harder to raise the knee, creating more tension in the thighs and hips, causing the leg to rotate out further. The vicious selfreinforcing cycle of tension, pain, and inefficient posture is now in full swing.

Proper foot posture is next to impossible with the muscle tension that is required to hold the slipper on, whereas a pair of sandal-type slippers with the strap covering the area above the toes allows a much more natural movement of the ankle and bones of the foot. This allows the foot to easily change and adapt to moving over uneven ground, translating into a more “planted” feel. This connection to the ground is part of our sense of balance, leading to a more confident stride. Taking time to walk barefoot, especially in soft sand, with an awareness of foot position and relative posture, can help promote this balanced feeling by re-education of the sensory bundles that run through our muscles.

When posture is compromised by muscle adaptation it is less than ideally efficient, with the body’s energy being spent on working many muscles that are not designed for postural activity. Conversely, when posture is biomechanically correct and efficient, energy is wisely spent and lasts all day. The experience of standing properly often feels like being suspended from the sky, as a boundless expression of movement is now possible. But remember, as shoes and posture are a lifetime affair, change may not come as quickly as hoped for. Along with changing your footwear and walking habits, it can be possible to speed up the process with muscle exercises, postural realignment, and focused myofascial release with a skilled practitioner. Our body is our expression to the world, and as such, it should signify the freedom that we all hold dear.

Josh Frohberg is a Certified Rolfer® and Craniosacral therapist (CST), serving the people of Maui since 2008. His unique concentration on these two very different methods stem from his own experience with bodywork therapies after sustaining several accidents while working as a bike messenger in the city of Vancouver, B.C. 38
