Welcome~ to our Annual Bodywork Issue All mammals instinctively give healing touch to comfort loved ones. Certainly, we all know the importance of loving touching, stroking, rubbing, massaging, hugging and kissing children, pets, friends, lovers and anyone for whom we feel affection. When accompanied by genuine caring and empathetic concern, touch works wonders! We also look into bodywork touch and how that can turn a stiff, out of balance area of your body into a much better flow of blood and energy. We look deeper into Thai ‘Yoga’ Massage therapy and the ancient Hawaiian massage style Lomi Lomi and how that much deeper touch and movement can help muscles and blood vessels do what they’re supposed to do. One Dance Tribe has their annual dance retreat on Maui coming up in January. In this form of dance you cultivate embodiment by listening through the body. Listening through the body allows each movement to be felt and expressed in a continual unfolding. In our Vegan Aloha section, Dr. Will Tuttle says our future is vegan and he’s got some serious proof of the good it will be for our healthy lives, the planet and ALL animals. He also explains how devastating it will be for our planet if we don’t take action now. Please use our Green Pages on your island of choice for a list of local bodyworkers in your area. Healing

Touch

by David Klein, Ph.D., Naturorthopathic Doctor

All mammals instinctively give healing touch to comfort loved ones. Certainly, we all know the importance of loving touching, stroking, rubbing, massaging, hugging and kissing children, pets, friends, lovers and anyone for whom we feel affection. When accompanied by genuine caring and empathetic concern, touch works wonders! Every disease condition has a corresponding muscular contraction. This is our natural response for protecting the traumatized area. The nerves in spastic, contracted muscles cause discomfort. In time, the contraction generally relaxes on its own, facilitating faster healing. In many cases, however, people consciously or subconsciously hang on to the memory of the trauma, causing the contraction (or “emotional armoring”) to persist. This impedes the flow of vital healing energy, leading to more “dis-ease.” An effective psychological tool we can use once we’ve identified this pattern is to feel deeply the emotional discomfort in the body and be with it until there is a natural shift to equanimity (a resolution). When we focus our attention in this way, the emotional issues come to the forefront of our consciousness and can be acknowledged and released, transforming dis-ease to ease. Whenever we feel emotionally out of balance, it is prudent to become present and still and practice this self-help technique. Additionally, we can employ physical healing touch techniques. For people recovering from illness, this can be essential for reconnecting healing energy to any traumatized and weakened areas of the self. Thus, we are repatterning and rebalancing the flow of our life force. We can gently lay our own hands on our belly and become aware of the good feelings that arise, dwelling on and inviting the nurturing sensations to remain. Daily repetition of this practice can revive and infuse any body organ with new energy. We can also gently massage our own belly, kneading any tense spots to release the contractions. 8

NOVEMBER–DECEMBER 2016

We can also get the loving help of others and receive the healing energy which is waiting to fill us up. The healing energy of loving touch is the same whether we receive it from ourselves or from others, and it reconnects us to our whole, vital, natural state of wellness. In simplest terms, we are simply allowing the fullness of feeling the nurturing love within ourselves. The goal is to maintain that feeling throughout our body by maintaining whole, loving mind-body consciousness. The Ancient Art of Laying On Of The Hands Since the earliest times, “laying on of the hands” has been practiced by “healers” to aid the sick and evoke a healing response. Warm, radiant energy emanates from the vital life force flowing through all that lives. Every cell in our body possesses sensory intelligence that responds to this life energy. Various names for this energy include: “God,” “chi” by the Chinese, “ki” by the Japanese, “prana” by Indians, “orgone energy” by Wilhelm Reich, “animal magnetism” by Anton Mesmer and “elan vital” by Henri Bergson. “Reiki” is the Japanese word for universal life energy. The Kabbala and the Veda healing system taught laying on of the hands. Jesus was renowned for healing people simply by the laying on of the hands. While it is often thought that the laying on of hands is a Biblical concept, it originated over 5000 years ago, in Chinese medicine, Ayurveda and many Shamanistic traditions, as well as other ancient religious and spiritual systems of mindbody-spirit healing. In Wise Secrets of Aloha, co-authored by Kahuna Harry Uhane Jim and Garnette Arledge, the ancient tradition of “Lauilima” is described as a pooling of many hands, aimed at raising the lowered vibration of one experiencing disease. Lauilima is considered “grace receiving gratitude, an emotional safety net” that sustains wholeness, anchoring these qualities so the receiver never has to fall into lower vibrations. In essence, Lauilima guides people into the full vibration of love.

The Mind-Body Connection In the early half of the 19th Century, Dr. Wilhelm Reich’s approach was to work with the body rather than the mind. The famed Viennese psychiatrist said: “It’s not the psyche (mind), but the soma (body).” His groundbreaking work led some psychiatry schools to incorporate “somatics” into their approach and fostered “alternative healing” counseling therapies in this field. In addition to or in lieu of attitudinal healing and counseling therapy, we can, of course, employ healing touch on our own and others’ bodies. Loving healing touch can “re-mind” the body that it’s OK to release the memory of the trauma and relax the contraction, restoring comfort and ease. Indeed, we can all use a parental or lover’s pat on the back, or a hug to soothe the stress of life. As Dr. Deepak Chopra said: “To promote the healing response, you must get past all the grosser levels of the body—cells, tissues, organs and systems—and arrive at a junction point between mind and matter, the point where consciousness actually starts to have an effect.” In Unwinding the Belly – Healing with Gentle Touch, co-authors Allison Post and Stephen Cavaliere assert that gently working the fingers in the area around one’s navel is “the most powerful self-manipulation you can possibly do. It can be profoundly relaxing when done with gentle breathing, and it connects you to your center in a very real sense, starting a process that will immediately begin to release tension.”

Your Body has Your Answers How do you know what your body needs at any given moment? … By tuning inward and listening. As a kid, you did it all the time, automatically. But you gradually got socialized out of listening internally and began taking your cues from your parents, the teacher, the clock…

by Denise LaBarre If you find yourself stressed, living in your head, and in some way disconnected from your body and its communication, getting bodywork is a great way to tune back in - plus it feels great. Bodyworkers (including massage therapists and others who touch, using different techniques, with therapeutic intent) are trained to listen to the body and can interpret your body’s messages that you may not be hearing, from “I’m dehydrated” to “Get me out of this relationship.” Bodyworkers are people who naturally enjoy touching and understand the value of touch and connecting inward. Many of us experienced touch-deprivation or disconnection in our upbringing and doing bodywork is both our gift to the world and a way of self-healing. We are the translators of your Remember to body’s messages and a portal to breathe through release and ease.

down a bit, turn inward, and receive bodywork. There are so many options: deep pressure, lymphatic drainage, hot rocks, sound, yogic stretching, lights, crystals … You can find just about any kind of style, focus and combination. Hawaii is a hub of alternative healers who combine various modalities into their own signature style. Learning a little more about the terms and the processes involved can help you find a bodyworker that suits you now. Start by asking your body what it wants to move or change and how much. Do you need subtle, gentle movement? or do you want to move big, intense energy? Do you want to address stuck emotional energy or avoid it for now? Are you open to integrating all levels at once? Can you trust the bodyworker to hold space for what you want to address? Some bodyworkers have a wide range. Others specialize deeply. Listen to your intuition and you will know who to go to for bodywork help. The bodywork I do combines massage (body), psychotherapy (mind), and shamanic journey (intuition/ spirit) with an emphasis on moving emotional energy through the whole system. What does all that mean? That means at the least, you get a great massage. We can talk—a lot, or not much. The energy of your “issues” arises as you talk and my work helps to move it through your body and out. We might talk about your childhood,

write down the destructive messages that constantly play in the background of your mind, and set them on fire (shamanic play). I have a trampoline in my yard that we use to shake things up, get energy moving, and invite in fun!

Give yourself the gift of relaxation and listening within. Your body deserves it! Most of all, I listen to the intuitive guidance from your body, through my hands. No two sessions look or feel the same, even for the same person. The emphasis is on experiencing the emotional energy physically. Once you feel it, it can move out – forever, if you let it. Feeling the energy sadness or anger you carry is usually much less awful than your fear of it. The resistance is what feels like suffering. Whatever the bodywork techniques involved or whom you work with, breathing is always your portal inward. Whether or not the bodyworker reminds you, make sure to breathe deeply when you’re on the table. Your breath is the greatest energy mover.

Energy Work? All bodywork moves energy at some level. The term “energy work” implies a focus on more subtle energy, sometimes with very light or no touch at all. When people ask me “Do you do energy work?” I ask what they mean by that. The way I see it, it’s all energy work, just on different levels. I call myself a Healing Catalyst rather than a “healer” because I set the healing in motion without being the one who does it. The healing itself is up to the client and the divine. The body has its own language that we are born understanding, but after we’re socialized out of listening internally, we may need help re-orienting. I communicate with the body intuitively to find out what it needs the way a horse whisperer communicates with horses. You may not find a great match every time you try a new bodyworker, but sometimes going to someone who doesn’t help you catalyzes your clarity about what you do need, instead. The field of bodywork is expanding and evolving at an exponential rate. We need it to help us connect with our bodies and all beings on the planet. When you meet a new bodyworker, ask questions to expand the collective conversation about complex and subtle energies in the human body. So, how do you find the right therapeutic match for what your body needs, now? Ask questions and use your intuition! The Green Pages listings in your area in the back of this magazine, is a great place to start. Enjoy!

TOUCHING

the soul I came to massage and bodywork through an unusual doorway: as a student of an Ancient line of healing wisdom.

by Jody Mountain

While my teacher, Kahu Abraham Kawai’i, was a Master Healer in both bodywork and herbal medicines, he was mostly a Master of Life. By this, I mean that he identified the Source of his wisdom as Life itself. Like many other Indigenous Healers, he was a student of the principles of Life as they showed themselves in the body, mind/ emotions, circumstances and the nature that he inhabited. He taught me to become a continual student of Life, and to listen deeply to the radiant inter-connectedness of it all. Life is continually meeting itself in different forms. Rain touches the Earth allowing plants to grow, fish and other organisms to thrive. Sunlight touches the leaves and ignites photosynthesis. Even inside of us, the Life in our breath meets our Living tissue to feed and produce more Life in the form of oxygen, toxin release, 12

|

and energy. We are seemingly swimming in a sea of Creation, and the same sea is swimming inside of us, on many, many levels. At the most foundational level, the various aspects of Creation do not distinguish themselves. The sun doesn’t decide to touch the plants, just like our body doesn’t decide to breathe, or distinguish between the breath and the energy it produces. As humans, we tend to compartmentalize existence, however, Life is simply moving as one synergistic whole. This is the way I was taught to approach the body: as One Being, inseparable from all of Life. When I touch another human being, I am aware that I am touching the wholeness of their existence, made up of every moment of their lives. How we, as practitioners, see the body, however, is only one part of the story. Of equal importance, is

NOVEMBER–DECEMBER 2016

the Source from which we offer the work. The Origin point of our awareness determines the quality of our touch, the effectiveness of the treatment, and the transformational aspects of the work. The most potent place we can access, inside of ourselves, is the Source of Life itself. The Ancients recognized Life in all aspects of our being: our thoughts, emotions, hopes, dreams, desires, memories, fears, sensations, cells, atomic & subatomic particles, tissues, organs, any image we have ever seen, every vibration that has passed through our bodies on each step that we have ever taken, is all considered Life. Kahu would call them members of our Family. The matrix of this sea of creation is the Spirit that animates it all. So the most potent place we can come from, in this form of healing work, is Embodied Life, the place where Spirit meets Form.

Where we are coming from dictates what we see, and how we engage with it. Just like someone walking down the street who’s hungry will only see the restaurants, and another person, whose shoe just broke, may only see shoe or repair shops. Inside, if we are coming from a place of wanting to ‘fix’ an ailment, tension or injury, we will look for the signs and signals that we have learned indicating these, and embark on a protocol to address them. If we’re coming from a place of wanting to provide relaxation or stress reduction, we will create a space and treatment to focus on those results. Similarly, if we are grounding ourselves in Creation / Life itself, and continually bringing our attention back to this listening, we have the possibility of accessing the Life Force in another. The resonance of our attention creates a space for Life

to be met. As a living being, it will recognize that it has been heard and seen, and begin to flow, rise and expand. This awakening, inside of the clients’ own system, in my experience, is what invokes healing. This is the Ancient Art of Touching the Soul. Manifestations of tension, illness, injury or misalignment are not conditions to be rejected, but rather expressions of Life that are calling for attention. Listening in the con-text of the Whole allows for these expressions to be heard, and to become free. Recognizing Life in all aspects of our experience, and allowing our attention to rest in Source, is not just a ‘technique’ for bodywork practice. It can be valuable in every moment of our lives. Kahu taught them as ‘Navigational Tools for Life’. In his words: “This work begins with the understanding of yourself: your

range and patterns of movement, and how they contribute to your total understanding of Life. You are provided with a vehicle to expand, express and ultimately, free yourself.” Listen deeply to Life, and you will hear an invitation to

Touch the Soul.

by Tanmayo Nicole Brown Lomi Lomi is a unique form of massage indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands. As it was passed from generation to generation as part of a rich oral tradition, it evolved into slightly different forms and lineages within different islands and communities. Lomi Lomi means rubbing, squeezing, and massaging. Some say its so nice, it’s said twice. Its characteristics involve long, smooth flowing strokes along the whole body, feathery to deep integrative touch on muscles and energy lines, joint mobilization, and shiatsu-like pressure. It can be relaxing or stimulating depending on the desired result, and always soothing, energizing, and restorative. It has been described as a dance around the body, a prayer in motion, and the “touch of aloha,” as it combines all these elements into a unique experience for both practitioner and recipient. A session often starts with a prayer/chant and a moment of silence and stillness as the practitioner invokes the clients particular spirit guides (amakua) and ancestors, or just attunes to divine loving presence within. As renowned Big Island kumu (teacher) Margaret Machado puts it, “I dont do the work, the Lord does”. Long before Christian contact, Lomi Lomi was flourishing all over the Hawaiian Islands, along with a rich tradition of herbalism and natural healing (Kahuna La’pau). All these practices were rooted in a deep spiritual tradition of Huna (secret), more recently popularized as the Law of Attraction. Wherever attention goes, energy flows; consequently, the world is as you think it is. Therefore, Lomi practitioners choose to focus on the harmony, beauty, and functionality already present within the client; and expand it in a joyous and celebratory way, through movement, breath, and prayer with skillful loving touch to restore balance.

NOVEMBER–DECEMBER 2016

Ho’oponopono addresses the mind, soul, and spirit, releasing past hurt and grievances by literally “making right right “ bringing one into the power of now. Lomi Lomi summons the body’s innate intelligence to heal and repair itself the way nature intended. The consciousness of the practitioner is immersed in loving awareness of self, others, and nature (Aloha means ‘One Breath’). As Lomi Lomi practitioners, we remember our true essence through prayer, chant, dance, conscious breathing, and precise alignment. It allows us to draw the patient into a deep remembering of soul identity, which is the source of true healing. Besides being so effective and anatomically precise that it can be used with physical therapy, Lomi Lomi is infused with Mana (energy) and known to restore wellness, not just physically, but also mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Reconnecting with the primordial essence and nature plays a vital role in the healing process. The ancients revered nature - they drew power from it. The Lomi practitioner invokes all five elements: Water (fluidity & letting go), Earth (grounding and stability), Fire (power & passion), Air (ease & space for transformation), Ether (freedom & expanded energetic field). The Hawaiians recognized the existence of the fifth element (electricity) and perceived an aura (electrical field around living things as seen in Killian photography) they called Aka . Therefore, Lomi strokes always extend beyond the boundaries of the skin. Kahi Loa is an imposition of hands on two parts of the body, usually the spine, creating a bridge and energetically resonant current, similar to Reiki or polarity therapy. Lomi Lomi was banned and made illegal by Christian missionaries and had to go underground until the 60’s. It is now recognized as a tradition that is to be treasured, thanks to enduring family values and a few Kahunas who preserved and passed it to younger generations. It has now become fully recognized, practiced, and sought after all over the world.

Tanmayo Nicole Brown has been initiated by Auntie Margaret and has been practicing Lomi since 1993 and teaching internationally. A long time Maui resident, she offers sessions and monthly weekend-long certification courses. www.mauiwellness.com • 808-283-6888

Thai ‘Yoga’ Massage: Cultivating the

Healing Space Within

by Matthew Galena An ancient practice for movement and healing. Thai Yoga bodywork is a blend of assisted stretching, acupressure, energy meridian therapy and common massage techniques. It’s fondly known as “Lazy Man’s Yoga,” as the recipient gets massaged, pushed, pulled, bent and twisted through a one-way partner yoga choreography, while focusing on relaxing, breathing, and allowing themselves to be positioned, supported and moved about by their partner. Historically, Thai bodywork was essentially a form of traditional physical therapy traced back to over 1000 years ago, one of many ancient sacred healing practices that were cultivated and passed down through the hands of monks and ascetics in temples, as Buddhism spread through Southeast Asia. When the 16

sore and injured needed healing, they visited a traditional doctor of this “old medicine.”

Thai bodywork is traditionally considered “energy” work. Though very physical, Thai Yoga is primarily considered an energy therapy, promoting the flow of “lom” (or “wind”, also known as chi, qi, prana and mana) throughout the body. Thai therapists manipulate this energy by massaging and stretching the “Sen,” a set of unique energy meridians through which this “wind” blows. The human body is mechanical in a very organic way. It is the most amazing bioelectric organism we know of, full of tiny sensors, pumps, pistons, fluids, lubricants, wiring and airways that

NOVEMBER–DECEMBER 2016

must be maintained, unfettered and unblocked, for us to properly function. This “wind” is described as the energy that moves us about in this amazing vehicle we walk around in every day. If a channel becomes restricted, then “lom” cannot flow as freely, and in time blockages may become more severe or permanently set in place. So how does Thai Massage keep the system clear and open?

Thai Massage cultivates your healing inner spaces. Thai Yoga opens the channels for ‘lom’ by releasing hardened muscle knots, separating muscles and connective tissue that have become “glued” together, and stretching muscles to reduce the strain they

exert on the rest of the body. By softening and releasing muscle knots using massage and acupressure, Thai therapists encourage contracted, shortened fibers to relax and lengthen. This alone reduces overall muscle strains, as well as the tension or pressure they may be exerting on bones and joints. Even when relaxed, muscles, tendons and their supportive connective tissue (myofascia) can become anchored in place or to each other, eventually restricting their range of movement over time. Thai therapists divide these bindings with massage to the Thai “Sen” lines, found deep in the spaces between neighboring muscles. Once softened and freed from one another, muscles can be gradually stretched, adding more resting length over time, while improving postural balance and unrestricted movement. Framed within a rhythmic routine, rolling and shaking your body loose, the overall result is much more space to move around in, like changing out of business clothing into something much more comfortable! A little more elbow room on the inside!

Why do muscles need to be stretched? Unfortunately, muscles are unappreciated when it comes to how they can negatively affect our overall health. Consider that muscles are the only part of the body that directly puts pressure on anything else. It’s their job, to create movement with physical force, but every other component… skin, bones, organs, nerves, blood vessels, etc… are essentially just along for the ride. Nerves commonly get pinched, but this usually happens when a bone is pulled out of alignment against a nerve, or when tight muscles are squeezing one directly. Joints may be painfully compressed or pulled out of place with everyday movements, but both often occur because one

or more muscles involved are too short or tight, and are pressurizing the joint, or restricting it from moving smoothly without jumping its track or jamming together. If there’s a mysterious joint problem with no related injury or medical explanation, wear-and-tear under pressure is a simple answer worth considering. Not to mention, our muscles are simply neurotic (just like we are), and have a habit of packing themselves down further when we’re not consciously doing anything, due to subconscious nervous patterns that keep us clenching without thinking about it. As we put our muscles under pressure from hard work, in return they put us under pressure from a lack of length and space. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to soften, lengthen, and otherwise heal them back to feeling good!

Our muscles are of solid “Earth” that need mending. Food for Thought: In one model of Thai healing philosophy, every part of the body is made of a certain mix of Earth (solids), Water (liquid) and Air (gases or empty space). Muscles are considered “earthen” because they are mostly solid, but need a certain amount of water and air space to maintain a proper consistency. Healthy muscles should be fluid and supple, not hard and unyielding. Over time, soil in your garden can be soft or hard, moist or dry, spacious and light, or packed and heavy... determined mostly by how much water and air are mixed in. Earth you can run your fingers through can eventually settle, pack down and dry out until it’s solid. Obviously there’s very little water, but more importantly, there’s no airspace for any movement, especially for roots, water and bugs or microbes. This is what made the original bricks naturally strong in the first place...

a lack of water and internal space. If you squeeze the dehydrated soil firmly, it no longer is malleable and able to form new shapes like clay. Instead, it fractures, breaks and sometimes bursts apart into jagged bits. The same soil that plants loved is now harsh and unforgiving, unable to provide the roots what they need, and its brick-like consistency needs mending to be hospitable once more... by dividing the Earth, to introduce Air, and allowing Water to flow through that space to rehydrate and restore the environment, for life to flourish. In this spirit, Thai therapists (and other massage therapists) are helping “cultivate” your muscles back to health! Spreading the Earth, to allow the Air and Water to flow and bring healing to the land.

Feel like you need some space now? Does your body feel packed together, or pulled out of place? Is there something that just needs more space to be happy? Give your body some room to move by spreading it out any way you can! Been thinking about going to yoga classes? Wonderful, you’re on the right track! Find knowledgeable professionals to help you learn how to release your burden. Almost any kind of stretching or massage will help! Sometimes the answers are simple ones, you just have to get back to the basics!

by Liah Howard In my lifetime I have received and given hundreds of massages. While this doesn’t make me an expert on massage, there are some things I have learned through the years about the subtle energy exchange that happens before, during and after a treatment. As a practicing psychic, who loves to get bodywork done, I am very particular about who I have work on me. When choosing a massage therapist, I want them to have a mindful presence. I appreciate a therapist with a conscious intention that the massage be positive, healing, relaxing, and therapeutic. I know that in addition to the physical touch, there is an energy transference that occurs during a session. I want this energy exchange to be positive. It is important to me to choose a massage therapist that I trust to hold a “sacred space” so I can relax and release any tension or stress and feel safe on the table. I learned this discernment after I experienced some massages that impacted me negatively and left me feeling drained.

positive healing relaxing

Some massage therapists are more intuitive than others and can “read” the needs of my body and my emotional state even before I speak to them. Other massage therapists are doing their job, giving a massage, but it is from a much more detached and automated place. Their heart may not be in it or they may not have developed the extra sensitivity 18

to intuit what I need. Unfortunately, some other body workers may also have an agenda of their own which detracts from the healing nature of a massage. My goal when receiving a massage is to let go and open to the experience, so I can relax and go deeply within to receive the healing transmission. I’m not there on the table to teach, entertain, stimulate or please my therapist. When I book a massage, it is because I am feeling depleted, tense or in pain and want to relax. So it is important I select a therapist that resonates with me. Many massage therapists are quite psychic and receive intuitive messages, pictures and the causes for pain in the client’s body. They may pick up on an old car accident or an injury as they are working silently on the client. This ability to psychically “read” the client’s energy field can develop over time. As a massage therapist for many years, I noticed my intuition getting stronger and stronger as I risked sharing little bits of information I received while working on the client’s body. Some massage is done in silence or with just soft music playing. There is a grace that happens in the stillness and quiet. When I was open and listening to the messages from the client’s body, I learned about their emotional and spiritual needs, as well as the needs of their body’s pain and tightness. I studied energy work and learned how to direct a

universal healing source of energy, along with the muscular therapeutic touch while giving massages. This combination of healing energy and therapeutic touch produced a positive effect for the clients. This subtle energy exchange before, during and after a massage can make the difference between feeling refreshed and relaxed from a positive exchange, or depleted and victimized from a negative exchange. Choose your massage therapist carefully. Rather than basing your selection on credentials only, tune into your intuitive feeling about the person and whether or not they are a vibrational “match” for you. A massage can be a sacred, holy gift that energizes and heals on deep levels.

Choose wisely and feel refreshed, relaxed and energized.

We are living on the road. For seventeen years Madeleine and I plied North America’s highways in our solar-paneled fifth wheel “rolling home” and after a three-year break, we are again in our rolling home for our 11-month “Vegan For Life” lecture tour. We are able to get a pretty good glimpse into what’s happening here. Two things especially stand out. One—monoculture agribusiness. Huge fields of corn, soybeans, hay, alfalfa, and other grains and legumes grown primarily to feed our billions of hyperconfined cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, and fishes. Two—hospitals and medical facilities. They are springing up like mushrooms after the rain—mainly for the flood of people hyperconsuming the flesh, eggs, and milk of the aforementioned creatures.

of all vegetables and fruits! This could be our future as well! If we understand and act.

North and south, east and west, monocultures and hospitals. Drugged and poisoned land with all its inevitable results. According to recent statistics from the Department of Agriculture, a whopping 86 percent of U.S. agricultural land is devoted to just four crops— corn, soy, hay, and wheat—the main crops used to feed and fatten confined animals. By contrast, growing all the vegetables in the U.S. requires only 1.5 percent of our agricultural land! And for all the orchards and vineyards that provide our nuts, berries, and fruits, it’s just 1.6 percent! Just three percent of our farmland produces all our fruits, veggies, and nuts! Talk about small footprint! Several years back, for example, as we were driving through Iowa, and I was delivering lectures promoting veganism in cities and towns throughout Iowa (whew!!), we traveled through countless thousands of acres of soybean fields. We found out that only one small field in the entire state grew soybeans that were used for tofu and soymilk for humans; virtually the entire vast Iowa soy crop was squandered to fatten cows, pigs, and other enslaved animals who were hidden away in their stinking sheds and feedlots far from the major roads. In contrast to this, Russia has been encouraging small-scale family gardens (“dachas”), and these dachas have been a remarkable success, now supplying 93 percent of Russia’s potatoes, and 80 percent

It is way beyond time for all of us in our culture to look behind the curtain of institutional denial and bring the light of compassion and awareness to our meals and what our meals require.

NOVEMBER–DECEMBER 2016

By reducing vast expanses of our precious forests and prairies to toxic monocultures, where only one species is allowed to grow in order to feed the mistreated animals whose flesh and secretions we are all pressured into eating, we create the ongoing conditions of psychological, ethical, ecological, cultural, and spiritual disconnectedness. These prevent us, as a society, from understanding the roots of our unyielding dilemmas. The violence on our plates reverberates through our bodies, our minds, our culture, and throughout our world. How can we or our elected representatives act wisely while the blood that is running through our veins and brains is polluted with hormone, drug, and pesticide residues, cholesterol, and the fear, panic, and psychotic depression lived by the animals we eat?

Everyone in our culture feels it, I think. The existential doubt, visceral and haunting, about our future. The future of our species. Of the Earth. Our way of living. We feel it, but it’s just too much—so we turn away and focus on the familiar distractions, turning up the volume to drown out the inner knowing. Yet our sanity longs for truth. More than anything else, veganism is truth. The truth of awareness—of what we’re actually eating. Of what it takes to get it on our plates. Of all the implications of our routine actions. The truth of our interconnectedness with all beings. The truth of our radiant essential nature, free, awake, loving, merciful, and wise. The truth of the consequences of our meals: of our devastation of oceans for fish to feed chickens and cows whose bodies, babies, and yearnings we steal. The truth of our repressed and deadened horror. The truth of our inability to make some pretty obvious connections. Eating violence and terror, we long to avoid the truth. Everywhere, though, the truth is popping up! It’s increasingly difficult to avoid hearing and seeing the

obvious. Eating animal foods destroys the Earth. Drives global climate breakdown. Drives species extinction. Drives ocean depletion and forest devastation, drug addiction, disease, soil loss, water pollution and depletion, acidification, toxification, despair, and the mentality of exploitation and elitism and war. Like the rising sun, the truth is shining brighter every day, revealing the interconnections and bringing healing, insight, and understanding. And we are awakening. Veganism is the stark and liberating solution to the omnivore’s dilemma, the cultural conundrum bearing down ever more relentlessly as our massive violence toward animals and the Earth and future generations ripens before our eyes. Happiness, peace, and freedom flow from nonviolence. We are all connected, and our joy is in blessing others. I don’t know how it will happen, but this I know in my bones: our future is veganism. Our future selves are vegans—delightedly and powerfully aware of the ancient truth of our magnificence. We are not commodifying, abusive, and numb people who heartlessly destroy the Earth and the sacred web of life—who have no future and who have lost our purpose by stealing the purposes of others. We are consciousness, grace, kindness, creative inspiration, joy,

and understanding. When light shines, darkness simply disappears without a trace. No fight is required. Letting the light shine through, breathing deeply and fully, we partake of the infinite, moment after moment.

This, then, is the situation in a nutshell: We are all beings of light and awareness and love, born into a culture of violence, ignorance, and exclusion. We take on its darkness and fear, and the core ritual used by our culture to effect this is our daily meals, where we are forced to participate in routine killing by eating and buying the flesh and secretions of imprisoned, terrified animals. Our path to freedom lies in freeing these animals. Veganism is the feminine wisdom of interconnectedness, the spiritual and practical key to happiness and peace for all. She is our future. She is beckoning to us. We all live on the road—the road to vegan living and to the harmony, sustainability, freedom, and co-creative celebration shining within.

808 Wellness is a Healing Center in Kihei, South Maui and is the brainchild of couple Sara Schroepfer, BA, LMT and Alan Schroepfer, LAc, LMT. It has been a vision of Sara’s for over 15 years. Initially, she had started a small Healing Arts Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, when she met Alan. As a massage therapist, he had returned to MN from living 12 years on Maui to be near family while going to acupuncture and Chinese Medicine School. Upon returning to Maui 4 years later, married and starting a family, they embedded themselves in the South Maui healing scene. Over the last five years, they have grown to enjoy business relationships with select Wailea spas and established their reputations as premier therapists with visitors, kama’aina and health professionals. “We came to a place where we deliberated on how we spend more than we could afford for rent at multiple offices on island or to venture out and find our own place. Given our history, the choice was easy and here we are.”

In their first year of business as 808 Wellness, they offer premium service and multiple modalities that include: advanced massage therapy and bodywork, TCM & acupuncture-bodywork integration, energetic healing and spiritual therapeutic care, CranioSacral therapy, Reiki, Access Bars Consciousness and Shamanic Healing. At 808 Wellness, they carry prepared TCM herbs, therapeutic grade essential oils and other holistic and local products. They have assembled a highly trained team of amazing and licensed practitioners that offer their own unique styles of therapeutic relief, deep tissue massage, structural rebalancing and general well-being. The 808 Wellness office is open 7 days a week, from 9am to 6pm on Monday through Saturday, Sundays and evenings by appointment. 808 Wellness is making one more transition and is pleased to announce their upcoming move and expansion inside the Rainbow Mall on December 1st. Moving to a larger office will allow them to offer more types of services and treatments with increased therapists and specialists. They are looking forward to having regular classes, workshops, seminars and speaker series based on the themes

of health, wellness, spirituality and personal development. The intention is to offer South Maui a unique environment for the community to come together and share in education and learn tools and techniques to further their own healing path and self discovery journey into their Body, Mind and Spirit. “It is our belief that a person who is aligned in their Self gives back to their community and thus helps to make the world a better place.” 808 Wellness looks forward to meeting you and to helping you along your journey. “UA OLA LOKO I KE ALOHA” — Love gives life within

Inspired by the Hawaiian philosophy of the “Aloha Spirit”, founders Cody and Nancy Sheets began with the simple mission of sharing Aloha with family, friends and visitors through the use of environmentally friendly fashion and socially conscious products. Opening Fleur De Lei, an eco boutique in a rustic Hawaiian cowboy town called Makawao on Maui, was the answer to fulfilling their big vision: a local marketplace where people can shop for a good cause, feel good about the products they buy and help minimize the impact on the environment. In Hawaii “Aloha” is a common word that is often used in hello and goodbye greetings or expressing love, but those who practice the spirit of Aloha know it has a profound and deeper meaning. The meaning derives from ancient Hawaiian wisdom that was given as a gift to

the Hawaiian people “in the joyful (oha) sharing (alo) of life energy (ha) in the present (alo).” To Hawaiians or locals who live in Hawaii understand, Aloha is a way of life that helps create and spread positive energy to others and the environment. “Our planet gives us such awe-inspiring natural beauty that anyone can recall a time where they’ve experienced a special connection with nature. Being in tune with nature is another big part of experiencing the Aloha Spirit. We believe its important for everyone to make responsible choices that give back to nature while preserving our current environment so future

generations can continue enjoying all of nature’s gifts”. Nancy concludes, “by applying the Aloha Spirit in our daily lives and business operations we can shower those around us with unconditional love and respect. Inspiring others to joyfully live life and preserve the environment is our way of contributing to a better world. The most rewarding part of our job is the more Aloha we give to people, the more repeat customers we get back in return.

Embodiment:

The Power of Creating Union

by Amara Pagano

Embodiment means to occupy one’s body, and its power manifests when we are connected to our bodies. The ancient Hawaiians believed that in listening to the body we are listening to spirit and that essentially - there is no separation between body and spirit. There is a story that when they traveled from Polynesia in canoes they were able to find their way by listening to the bottom of the ocean. This level of being connected in the body and listening is something we have lost in our western society. We live in a world where body and spirit are largely disconnected. We have engaging minds, completely running the show while not being connected to the body. As a result, we generate and experience a lot of stress: personal, social and environmental. Embodiment can bring us back into connection, into right relationship with ourselves, our communities and our environment. When we are connected we receive all the 28

information we need to navigate the waters of life. Our body is like an antenna that connects us to the web of life and when we occupy the body we receive the benefit of resting inside of this great web. So how do we find this connection again? One path is through conscious movement. In this form of dance we cultivate embodiment by listening through the body. Listening through the body allows each movement to be felt and expressed in a continual unfolding. In Azul conscious movement we practice occupying and listening to each part of the body in order to strengthen our embodiment. As we practice in the dance, we experience moments where body and breath are unified and the power of union is felt. Often there are ah ha moments, when the information and the guidance we need arrives. It lands in us, not

coming down from our heads but rising from our knowing. From this experience of union we get to live the beauty of our being and touch the deepest part of ourselves. If you wish to explore the world of conscious movement and have a direct experience of embodiment, there is an amazing opportunity to do so next January on Maui at the annual OneDanceTribe event at Camp Keanae. www.pathofazul.com

Amara has been teaching movement as a spiritual practice for over 20 years. She is the creator of Azul Conscious Dance and the founder of the global conscious movement community OneDanceTribe.

Gauranga Live Goes Global by Emily Garland Jai’s Hilo Farmers’ Market table is usually buzzing with fans. “I want another one,” an older man says, handing Jai a folded bill at a recent market. The man takes a free shot of turmeric tonic in a small paper cup and Jai hands him a bottle of the spicy turmeric, ginger and coconut milk elixir—the same stuff the man bought that morning. The 34

man exhales sharply. “Nothing but the best…in the world,” he exclaims. You give me the zing!”“Not only the zing, but it’s good for you,” Jai says. “I know,” the man replies. “I’m lucky you’re here.” The man leaves, and Jai grins. “That’s what keeps bringing me back,” Jai says. “I can’t stop it now. I can only make it grow bigger.”

NOVEMBER–DECEMBER 2016

It is Gauranga Live, the line of local, organic, raw and vegan tonics, smoothies, yogurts, popsicles and probiotic cultured veggies Jai produces. Jai created Gauranga Live more than 10 years ago to treat the leaky gut he developed after 15 years in the Marines. “I had extreme pain digesting food,” Jai says of his ailment, which lasted several years and caused a massive bulge in his stomach. “It got so bad I realized I needed to do something.”

started selling his drinks at Hilo Farmers’ Market 10 years ago. Gauranga Live products are also at Maku’u Farmers’ Market and many Big Island health food stores.

Jai’s first product was his Hawaiian Green Smoothie, a liquid meal of kale, pineapple, mango, banana, ginger, turmeric and coconut milk. Ten products followed. Ginger and turmeric star in most Jai’s drinks. Ginger alleviates digestive problems and boosts the immune system. Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory and treats flatulence and toothaches, Alzheimer’s and cancer. Gauranga Live’s instantly cultured veggies pack a punch of friendly flora bacteria. “It goes right into your bloodstream and you instantly feel a the difference—it really works,” Jai says of his goods.

difference The pain drove Jai back to eating direct from the ground, organic produce, as he did growing up on a large plantation in Belize. With dreadlocks, natural fiber clothes and a living-easy attitude, Jai maintains his coastal-living look in Hilo. “We grew everything,” Jai recalls of his Belize home. “There was no such thing as organic and not organic. Everything was organic.” Post Belize, Jai began consuming the junk that makes up the aptly acronymed Standard American Diet, especially during the Marines, when he subsisted on packaged rations. After the Marines he transformed his eating in six months, switching from processed foods to a vegan, mostly raw diet. “He became brand new,” says Jai’s wife Amala. Jai’s energy and awareness soared, and his pain disappeared. “It was an awakening that occurred for me,” Jai says. “As a result I just have a strong desire to share.” Jai

The man who took the turmeric tonic shot felt it, as do many of Jai’s customers, including the teenagers at the Hilo residential treatment center where Jai worked. “The green smoothie made a huge impression on their behavior,” Jai says. “They were way less violent, way more tolerant, understanding and attentive in classes.” While some are initially puzzled by the claws of ginger and turmeric and jars of rainbow-colored cultured veggies on Jai’s market table, he has no shortage of buyers—or success stories. A woman whose four-day headache disappeared after a sample shot of turmeric tonic. Another woman who lost so much weight on his 21-day green smoothie cleanse that Jai didn’t recognize her when she visited his booth. Jai’s green smoothie also helped that woman’s three autistic sons. Two of her sons improved their pronunciation. Her third son was so violent that he gave his mom bruises. The green smoothie stabilized his moods.

pure, spiritualized foods Stores sold out of Jai’s drinks during his recent 12-day vacation, and market customers complained. “Make no mistake, there’s always a lot of people there,” Amala says of Jai’s Hilo market table. At first Jai thought his customers were just being polite. But they kept coming back. “That’s why people keep coming back—’cause they’re really getting results,” Jai says. Susan of Hawaiian Paradise Park has lost weight and gained energy from her Gauranga Live regimen. She drinks green smoothie mixed with turmeric tonic for breakfast and after workouts. “It makes my body feel good and is energy for me,” she says. “If I drink a green smoothie I feel like I’ve done my duty for the day.”

Gauranga Live is well on its way. Jai recently started selling his coconut milk to restaurants and hotels and plans to open a bayfront shop in Hilo where he would make and sell his products. “I’m ready to take it to the next level,” Jai says. “It’s what I’m excited about.”

Although his family helps, Gauranga Live is essentially a “one-man show.” Not that Jai minds. “It’s actually a play, it’s not a work,” he says. “I just really enjoy doing it. It’s not rigid, it’s a flow. I really like how it’s unfolding very effortlessly.” While Jai is still looking for that “multi-million dollar account,” his fans are sure his time will come. “You got a good product, you got good energy,” one of Jai’s many friends tells him at a recent market. “It’s just a matter of time.” For more information, or to order Gauranga Live products, call Jai at 808-430-0804 Please visit Jai’s GoFundMe site at www.gofundme.com/Help-Hawaii-Family

Jai calls his products “pure, spiritualized foods.” Gauranga Live is named after Sri Chaitanya Mahaprahu, believed to be the incarnation of the Hindu God Krishna. Mahaprabhu (Gauranga), wanted to spread Krishna-devoted dancing and singing to the world. Jai wants to do the same with his wares. “This type of food should be available in every town and village,” Jai says. “That’s our goal, to spread to every town and village globally.”

Until just recently I never had the desire to spend a lot of time on Oahu. Having spent most of my life in Los Angeles and New York City, Maui was such a relief that I never wanted to leave (although I had to sometimes). This caused me to wonder why I lived in big cities for so long. The thought of heavy traffic to me was like Kryptonite to Superman. What I saw of Oahu was not inviting, until now. I went to Oahu for only a couple of music gigs in many years and just stayed for the night and flew out as quickly as possible the next day. Now that Living Aloha Magazine has branched out to all the Hawaiian Islands I need to spend time in Oahu. After spending 3 weeks there in the last few months my feelings have changed. Juggling the heavy traffic directions was pretty easy. During my recent times on Oahu I have come across a wide diverse array of healthy things happening there. 40

S. King St. in Honolulu has loads of vegan and vegan friendly restaurants including vegetarian supermarket chain Down To Earth (total of 4 stores on Oahu). Also, the mostly vegan farmers market Saturdays at Ward Center happily filled us up with scrumptious samples after leaving the airport. The most recent trip was for the amazing and first ever VegFest Oahu a few weeks ago. It was an incredible event attended by 3,000 plus beautiful humans that care about their health, the planet and ALL of its sentient beings. There were many great food vendors there and one really caught the attention of my heart and stomach—Peace Café in Honolulu. Although I’d recently been to Peace Café before eating their food at VegFest Oahu, eating their food in that open air, Peaceful environment and perfect weather was such a treat. The idea of “Peace Café”, according to them, started from a simple concept of their wish for peace on earth. “We desire for a peaceful harmony amongst man, animals, and nature. We believe that a peaceful mind is created through pure

Be kind to animals, nature, body, and spirit through food we consume …

GOURMET VEGAN

and whole foods that Mother Nature provides—and a peaceful mind creates peace on earth”. They provide full flavor by using whole and organic foods—lunchboxes with brown rice, muffins using spelt flour, organic vegetables with roots and skin. They also strive to use local ingredients for the freshness and for support of local farmers.

100% GLUTEN-FREE & NON-GMO

Peace Café promotes kindness. Be kind to animals, nature, body, and spirit through the food we consume. Connecting the lines between animals, nature and humans, and promoting the concept of harmony between every living creature on this planet is as essential as the flavor of their food. Through their abundant selection of soulful food, hand-picked ambient music, simple décor and the mellow vibe created there, they provide a space that is filled with happiness, and a space where you can feel peacefully at home. They also have a big wooden table in the middle of the eating area where different people are encouraged to meet and create new friendships with like-minded people.

ORGANIC & LOCALLY GROWN [as much as possible]

Now more on the food… For sandwiches, among many others, they have BBQ Tempeh with their original sweet ‘n’ sour sauce with coleslaw. Another is the Avo-Veggie with slices of avocado and veggies. Most sandwiches come with lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, sprouts and homemade vegan aioli spread. For full entrees my favorites have been the “Yogini” — light and simple with brown rice, beans, greens, and seaweed. The BBQ Tempeh Plate with coleslaw, green salad, brown rice, and cornbread is up there with the Yogini. They also have Caesar, Soy Soba Salad and a Moroccan Stew. Some beverages they have includes Lattes—Americano, Soy, Kinako, Grain, Chai and Grain Coffee plus a selection of Kusmi Teas and Mauna Kea Iced Tea. They can be served hot or cold. Their desserts are all dairy, egg and refined sugar-free. My favorite was the Brownie Mochi cake. They also have Matcha Berry, Kinako Berry, Kinako Chocolate, Chocolate Berry and Apple-Banana Cinnamon. Their homemade ice creams are Vanilla Bean, Chocolate and Avocado. I now go there every trip I make to Honolulu. There’s much more to choose from. See their menu on their website. You will be very happy and peaceful.

Krystal says; “I love Kauai. I love everything about it. On this island we are all intertwined, which has given me a deeper sense of connection here. It also gave me the idea of creating a business that helps the community, combined with a passion to create healthy, sustainable products”. In 2010, they started Kauai Kombucha. The community pulled together and pledged on a Kickstarter campaign to help them with funds to start brewing, bottling, and selling this healthy, tasty, fermented beverage known to cure all sorts of ailments. Kristal says; “I thought I was going to save the world. Realistically, it was hard, exhausting, and I had no idea what I was doing. Fortunately, I don’t like falling short of my goals and looked for ways to stay local. So I modified my methods, and eventually turned it into a business that many people seem to love, and a job I love doing”.

She assembled an amazing team and started Kauai Juice Co. They now create cold pressed, glass bottled, organic, locally sourced juices. Kauai has an abundance of fresh produce, leafy greens, root veggies, herbs, and seasonal fruits. Kristal says; they consistently hear from people over and over again about how much Kauai Kombucha has improved their health. These people have touched our hearts. That means more to us than anything. So to continue in the direction of healing, we decided to also offer juice cleanses in multiple varieties. For us, juicing is one of the best ways to achieve mental clarity and energy while detoxing and cleansing the body. It is fair to say that we are obsessed with juicing, and there’s nothing better than sharing what you love with the people you love”.
What makes Kauai Juice Co.’s juices different from what you can buy at a grocery store is that most juice at

grocery stores are flash-pasteurized to reduce pathogens. This method heats the juice to high temperatures that sterilizes the juice, destroying live enzymes and nutrients, and minimizing flavor. At KJC their juice is cold pressed with a special type of juicer that leaves all the vital nutrients and enzymes in tact, allowing your body to absorb them efficiently. With KJC, you’ll receive protein from our Green Juices as well as our Nut Milks. While the nut milks are a more obvious source of protein, don’t discount the protein punch that comes from living plant foods. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and amino acids are in everything. Other great sources of protein include: bluegreen algaes such as Chlorella, E3Live, Spirulina (64% protein), and Green Superfood Powders and concentrates such as Vitamineral Green. Where do you think the nonmeat-eating, strongest animals in the world, the Silverback Gorillas, get their protein? There are numerous reasons why Kombucha is good for you. To sum it up, Kombucha is a fermented probiotic. It has healthy bacteria and essential acids that help with digestion, joint care, detoxification, and boosts your immune system. People love it as a healthy replacement to beer, in that the carbonation can stimulate the same feeling of beer but with positive side effects. You can find their Kombucha and juices in over 30 retail stores on Kauai and at their 3 Kauai Juice Co retail shops. You can email them at info@kauaijuiceco.com, or just call their shops directly.
