As we transition to the third season of the year, a time that is synonymous with full maturity, we begin to reflect inward wondering what the final months of 2017 will bring. Part of that self-reflection can be achieved with yoga and mediation techniques that are discussed in this issue. We invite you to learn more about all of the beneficial elements of this ancient practice and start a journey of physical, mental and spiritual awareness. This is part of Living Aloha— that which leads you to a more authentic self and holistic way of life. Yoga can mean many different things to each individual, but this definition of “Namaste” seems to sum it up quite well…

Some of you might be scratching your heads right now, wondering how your dirty dishes might be considered ‘Holy’. One answer lies in our preconceived definitions — the ways in which our minds have been separated to be pitted against ourselves and against each other. What if our notions of the Sacred have been fed to us, and include definitions that are seemingly out of our reach: pristine, devout, without ‘sin’, elevated, pure and most importantly: ‘connected with God’. We have been taught, for millennia, that we need an intermediary to contact the Divine. We have been taught that we are unclean and not worthy of the purity of this connection. What if just the opposite is true? What if the Sacred is operating in and through everything, including our own bodies, minds and emotions? What if everything is Sacred just because it exists? How would this change our navigation and experience of life? We may find ourselves in a new matrix of understanding. In other words, Instead of ‘darkness’ and ‘light’, ‘sacred’ and ‘profane’, we could experience the energy of motion or stuckness, inspiration or lack of choice, expansion or contraction, stillness and flow. Being present with the actual qualities of our experience, instead of our conceptual labels, creates more space for us to inhabit a ‘living spectrum’ of reality. As we bring our attention to The Mystery in any experience, we also become attentive to what we don’t know. Our known conclusions pale in the face of what is actually here. More of the Mystery of Life is able to reveal itself, and we find ourselves in a state of discovery. Indeed, we may find a whole new way of perceiving. We may discover the profound expansion of Aloha, which, in one definition, is “the acceptance of everything inside of us and compassion for all that exists.”

HEALING CATALYST CORNER Inspiring you to make connections that heal

Awareness from the inside out Meditative practices such as yoga, tai chi, qi gong, Pilates, and Somatics use directed breath with specific physical movement and/or postures for health and relaxation. Regardless of the specific details of form and process, they redirect your focus from external concerns, back into your body and present-moment awareness. The emphasis is on breath and movement (even if the movement is small or subtle as in sitting meditation) and the point is to feel the stretch, the movement of energy, and the connections—from within. From the Sanskrit word meaning to yoke, yoga is often translated as union, or connection. Whether it’s through gentle breathing or dynamic, flowing poses, conscious movement helps you make healing connections. It’s hard to feel what’s going on with your knee or hip when it’s still. But move it a little– especially directing your breath and awareness into the area–and you can feel exactly how much it is stiff, sore, or flexible, right now. Movement helps you really feel what’s happening in your body, now. The key is to bring your awareness to your movement and back into your body with your breath as often as possible to live your life 10

You start your life experiencing everything from the inside out, through the vehicle of your body, or “earth suit”, as my friend, Harriet calls it. As a baby, you laughed, loved, and breathed fully (from the belly) without checking yourself. But gradually you became socialized, and learned to take your emotional and behavioral cues from others and your social environment – from the outside in. You learned to breathe more shallowly, without puffing out your belly, and maybe laughing and loving less as well. The mental and social filters that give us our adult perspective also reflect the wounds and prejudices of our parents, teachers, and peers. From this flawed, reflected perspective we come to see ourselves as less-than, unworthy, or unlovable. That’s not the Truth, but our minds keep driving that misdirected bus. We experience our bodies as an after-thought rather than the vehicle of connection. Meditative practices nudge the mind out of the driver’s seat and guide us back to where we can

Using meditative breathing tools helps you maintain better balance and respond rather than react. The more you deepen your breath in a practice, the more you have it available to you as a tool when “bad” things happen. Whether you’re pissed that someone cut you off in traffic or you’re in the dark night of the soul, breathing back to centeredness can help you stay calm and even find humor where your mind would wind you into panic. Multiple Gifts Even though I took my first yoga class 35 years ago, I am still very much a beginner and see my imperfect practice as a gift I give myself. I go to yoga classes to surrender my self-directedness for a while. I also go to “be exercised” because I probably wouldn’t do those 20 extra leg lifts on my own. Still, the hardest part for me is holding my inner awareness enough that I don’t hurt myself. Letting the instructions be suggestions rather than commands and feeling for the edge of where I can move in that moment is my practice in a class. I have a much easier time with my FALL 2017


solo qi gong practice because I can hear my body’s signals easier when there’s no external distraction, but I need that gift as well. It’s also a double-edged sword, going to a class with people who can stretch further, bend deeper, and show me what I can’t do, by comparison. My mind has the habit of comparison - a habit I can drop, if I pay attention. I can use my powers of comparison to show me possibility and inspiration rather than judgment. I can stay in my body with my breath-awareness and listen for what my body is ready for, now. Few people can put their bodies exactly into all of the fancy asana shapes, and my body is no exception. Some days my wrists simply can’t handle as many downward dog poses as the instructor directs, or I get ambitious, wanting to stretch further than my body can go in that moment. When I push myself beyond my limits, I hurt myself. Then I’m out of class for days or weeks and I loose the incremental fitness benefits of the practice. If I continue to pay attention even through that, the injury brings me back inside, slows me down, and humbles me. It becomes another gift. An ongoing meditative/movement practice helps you tune in to the subtle changes in your body, mood, and condition from day to day and disconnect from the mental chatter and external focus that may grip you most of the time. The more you experience the physical and psychological benefits, your mind will resist it less and practicing becomes easier. Whether you sit in meditation and the biggest physical movement is your breathing, or you breathe while pretzeling yourself into fantastic yogic shapes, feeling your breath-energy move helps you re-member yourself from the inside out. You become re-minded about who you are at the core, underneath the limiting projections from your family and life experience. Every time you do it, you return to your foundation as spirit looking through a physical lens. Even a few simple deep breaths now, before you turn the page, will help bring your energy back inside and you will feel more centered and balanced, in this moment. Go ahead, give yourself this gift. ;-)

Bring on the

happy: 5 Yoga Postures Guaranteed to Make You Smile by Denise Caiazzo Sometimes we’re fortunate to wake up and have a wonderful day where everything flows, the to-dos all get done, good things happen at work, you feel healthy, and all is well at home. But other times it can be a little rough getting through the day in this wild and seemingly unstable world of ours. Right? So whether you’re having a challenging day or you just want to bring a bit more happy into your life, give any of these yoga postures a try. I guarantee that you’ll feel a big, juicy smile coming on!

Happy Baby Pose (Ananda Balasana)

Every time I do this posture, even if I’m not in the best mood, I instantly feel giddy and silly…I always notice a sweet smile emerging on my face as I let go into it. It also releases the hips, hamstrings, sacrum, and back; calms the brain and alleviates fatigue. So…Lie down flat on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Bring your knees into your chest and let them release out a bit more to the sides of your body with feet flexed and facing the ceiling. Hold onto the inside arch or outer side of each foot, whichever is more comfortable. If you don’t reach your feet, use a strap over each foot or just grasp the back of each thigh, but keep the bottom of the feet facing upwards. Allow your tailbone to relax into the floor. Drop your chin a bit and relax your shoulders into the mat. Breathe deeply in and out. Now here’s the fun part. It’s not an official step of the pose but it’s what I enjoy the most: Rock gently from left to right, back and forth, back and forth as long as you wish, letting all the cares of the world go, only rocking and rocking. Weeeeeeee. Feeling happier? 12

Downward-Facing Dog with a wiggle

(Adho Mukha Svanasana)

If you’ve ever done yoga, you’ve probably done this popular posture. It’s a fantastic stretching and grounding pose. But stay tuned because I add something fun at the end. Ready? Place hands and knees on the floor with back straight, with knees directly over your hips and hands slightly forward of your shoulders. Spread your palms. Turn toes under. As your exhale, allow your knees to move away from the floor and push into the floor with hands and feet, buttocks pointing upwards. You make a triangle with your body. Inhale, and as you exhale push into your hands releasing the chest back toward the thighs more so the top of your triangle (your sitting bones) points even more towards the Heavens. Your heels may or may not reach the ground. No forcing, just breathe and let the stretch happen. Once you’re settled in, think of your favorite dog…and wiggle your butt just a little (or a lot), shake your head, and if you dare pant just a little. You might even look back to the right and to the left to see your wiggling butt. Again, not officially part of down dog, but it sure is fun to do.

Lion Pose Roooooaaaaar!

Kissing the Earth Walking Meditation

(Simhasana)

Yes this is a serious pose with important benefits. It eases problems with teeth grinding and clenched jaws, releases tension in the chest and face, stimulates the throat, and is said to eradicate disease. But tell the truth, have you ever done this asana and not giggled a bit afterwards? Here’s how it goes…Sit in a comfortable position, either kneeling, in Lotus, or cross-legged. Place your hands on the ground about a foot in front of you at shoulder’s width. Keep your back straight. Take a deep inhale. As you exhale, open your eyes wide and look up, raise your eyebrows, open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue (like Gene Simmons from KISS – if you’ve been around long enough to remember him). Splay out your fingers like you have claws on the ends. And make a loud roaring “haaaaaaaaaah” sound throughout your exhalation. Now have a friend take a photo of you (ok, just kidding on that one). Then relax your face and sit back into a comfortable position, and breathe. Do this once or twice more. Feel the rush of power, you lion or lioness!

Flying with a Partner

Let’s just dive right into this one. The base (I like to call them the plane and to simplify the process I’m going to call the base him/ he) lays flat on the mat with legs extended up parallel to his hips with feet flexed and arms extended up parallel to his shoulders with palms flexed. The flyer (her/ she in this example) stands facing him with toes close to his buttocks. He slightly bends knees so she can place his feet just below her hip bones. Ready, set, fly! She reaches for his hands as he extends his legs slowly, lifting her into the air. It’s playtime. Now she gets to do whatever feels good moving slowly to keep their balance, let their hands go and arch her back upwards (like a Swan dive), play with bending her knees. He can bend one knee at a time. Have fun! And don’t worry about taking a safe tumble together…that’s often part of the flying experience.

This one isn’t a pose but it’s a moving meditation that anyone can do so beautifully and naturally. Go out into Nature, the forest, the beach, near a hidden waterfall, whatever calls to you. Go alone or with a companion, either human or animal. But walk silently and slowly, no talking. With each step, look around and notice the grandeur of creation. The lush colors and healing scents, every flower, plant, tree, stone, critter, insect. Each has a soul. Send each one love and say thank you. Go hug some trees or caress rocks if you’re so moved. Let each step bless and heal Mother Earth. In the book “Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life,” Thich Nhat Hanh said: “Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet.” With each gentle step, think “So Hum.” Which means “I Am That.” The thread of universal energy and consciousness runs through everyone and everything. When the vastness of that truly permeates your heart, you can’t help but smile with love and gratitude. Who knows, maybe you’ll even skip a little like I do sometimes while doing a walking meditation with my amazing dog Zena! Peace, peace, and perfect peace.

Yoga isn’t magic.

by Emily Garland Yoga isn’t magic. Katy Benjamin of Big Island Yoga Therapy in Hilo, Hawaii makes that clear to students. And she knows. Diagnosed with scoliosis at 10, Benjamin had her back fused at 21. Benjamin loved Yoga before surgery. After: torture. “I had so much pain,” she says. “I was so angry, so depressed. I would drag myself out of bed super depressed to go to Yoga ‘cause I felt like I should go, and it would hurt.” Yoga didn’t stop hurting until Benjamin discovered Yoga Therapy. Benjamin has since taught Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga for the past five years, along with birthing education and doula services. While Benjamin knows first hand that Yoga doesn’t always feel good, she also knows it has improved her students’ lives. Pat Moore had surgery two years ago to repair a major blockage 14

He also participated in Dean Ornish’s nine-week program for reversing heart disease. Ornish’s program features a plant-based diet, Meditation and Yoga. Today, Moore’s heart disease is nearly reversed. He’s lost 25 pounds and, except for baby aspirin, is off medication. He’s also better at stress management. Yoga has played a key role in Moore’s recovery. “No question about it,” he says. “I’m more in tune with my body, I’m listening to it more... I know my blood is flowing better, I have better energy ... better stamina. I want to get up and do things.” Things like the three-week, five-hour-a-day hike Moore and his wife Donna recently completed along the Camino

de Santiago (Road to Santiago) pilgrimage route from southern to northern Spain. Moore practices Yoga daily and plans to continue Yoga Therapy with Benjamin when he returns to Hilo. Benjamin is earning her Yoga Therapy Certification from The International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT). IAYT has certified more than 2,000 Yoga Therapists and accredited 27 yoga therapy training schools. IAYT’s certification requires up to 1,200 hours of training. Although Yoga Therapy has only recently begun gaining popularity in the Western world, the practice began more than a century ago in India. In the 1980s Ornish published research about Yoga Therapy’s health benefits, and his program was approved for health insurance coverage in the 90s. Yoga Therapy is now a fixture of many FALL 2017


health clinics and hospitals and is even utilized by the Department of Defense. So what is Yoga Therapy? According to IAYT: “Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga.” Benjamin is all about empowerment. “My goal is that [my students] won’t need me,” she says. “That in three to 10 or 20 sessions they’ll have the tools they need to self-regulate.” These tools are highly individualized. Benjamin likens teaching a standard Yoga sequence to cooking from a recipe, and teaching Yoga Therapy to cooking from scratch for each student. She begins each class by asking students to share how they’re feeling physically, mentally and emotionally. She then tailors her class to meet each student’s needs.

While student needs are diverse, most students come to her frustrated. They often feel failed by the medical system or by the one-size-fits-all approach of many yoga classes. Jennifer Sims, 44, recently attended Benjamin’s functional Yoga Therapy class for the first time. She’s practiced Yoga at home for years, but had never been to a class. “I thought it would be a lot of women like the ones I know who go to Yoga religiously who can do headstands and balance on a foot for 100 years,” she says. Sims’ canoe club teammate convinced her that Benjamin’s class would help her lower back and hip pain. Sims was pleasantly surprised. “It definitely didn’t feel high pressure,” she says of the class. Yoga has also relieved enormous pressure for Laura Humpf. Working at a therapeutic school outside of Chicago,

Humpf was burned out, depressed and exhausted. She couldn’t sleep. Then she tried Yoga. Not only did Yoga put her to sleep, it ignited her passion. She quit her job, moved to Seattle and became a certified Yoga Therapist. Humpf, of Satmato Yoga Therapy and Rainier Beach Yoga in Seattle, is also a licensed Mental Health Therapist. People come to Humpf with trauma, depression, eating disorders. Her students are “terrified to get into their bodies.” She helps them safely inhabit more of themselves through movement, talking and meditation. She encourages students to “find their own shape” and create their own poses, often representing their mental states. “I think about Yoga thousands of years ago,” Humpf says. “It was dudes in caves moving their bodies in creative ways. We have so much knowledge inside of us.” Humpf helps students discover and use this

healing knowledge. Her approach works. The cumulative effects of daily Yoga and Meditation have helped keep one of Humpf’s longtime students out of the hospital. Before seeing Humpf, the 40-something woman had been hospitalized several times for severe depression. Humpf has taught the woman to recognize anxiety and depression’s warning signs, and is helping open a road to healing. Like Benjamin and Humpf, Julie Vosters of Yoga Therapy and Integrative Care of Hawai’i, LLC in Honolulu collaborates with mental health and medical specialists. A Yoga Therapist for 15 years, Vosters has worked in many medical clinics and introduced Yoga Therapy to generations of families. Vosters provides prenatal and palliative care, and “everything in between.” She’s earning a doctorate as a Nurse Practitioner

to help bridge the gap between Yoga and Medicine. A former professional ice skater, Vosters has used Yoga to alleviate her injuries and ailments, including osteoporosis. Like Benjamin, Vosters knows Yoga isn’t magic. But it’s close. “Yoga, for people who are open to it, leads into a realm…that love of Spirit, of Life, of something I can’t quite name, but it’s really important,” she says. “Yoga and Yoga Therapy can reach people no matter their background, their physical or mental health status, their educational level.” Yoga Therapy is more specialized and targeted towards the individual than group Yoga. Be sure to find the qualified Yoga Therapist that’s right for you, and move in the direction of optimum health.

AS MEDICINE

by Liah Howard Meditation invites us to let go and not hold so tightly to the passing drama of life. Through extended practice we can learn to be a witness to the happenings in life, rather than a victim of life. Through meditation we can learn to access the infinite stream of love, healing and light that the Universe offers so freely. We are then free to direct this energy in a positive way.

The avenue I use for developing inner peace and wellness is meditation and mindfulness. I used to be just an early morning meditator where I would sit for an hour, do mantras, practice breathing techniques, hand mudras and sitting in silence. Now my meditation practice has evolved and I find myself meditating many times during the day. I am continually checking in to see if I feel connected to inner peace or outer turmoil. healthy and peaceful. Our negative or positive attitude in life can affect our vitality and stress levels, which, in turn, affect our health. The words meditation and medicine have the same root, which means, ‘to heal’. A friend observed that medicine heals the body, while meditation heals the soul. While I appreciated the sentiment, I couldn’t help but wonder if it wasn’t, perhaps, a bit too simplistic? The mind likes to separate the body and soul. However, I believe that they are inextricably linked. The mind can indeed heal the body, as well as the soul. Dr. Hans Seyle, who first made the connection between stress and biological effects said, “The modern physician should know as much about emotions and thoughts as about disease symptoms and drugs.” This alternative way of practicing medicine can heal what is blocking the soul’s light, as well as healing the body. Having a positive body-mind connection can contribute to health and wellbeing, while a negative mindset can cause disease, depression, and soul sickness. When we choose a simple meditation like this, over reacting as a victim of life and stressing out over circumstances, our bodies and emotions are better able to cope with the passing drama. In this way we can become empowered and can direct healing energy into any situation. In this sense, meditation is medicine, and while nothing can replace taking care of your physical body, it is important to recognize the internal shifts that are within our grasp. I invite you to either begin a meditation practice today or return to an old practice you had. Your health and well-being will be the better for it.

Most of us look to other people for our praise and our feedback. Most of us are starving for this level of recognition and verbal love. So instead of giving your power away waiting for someone else to fill you, this is an opportunity to fill yourself up with love and adoration. You are the most powerful person ever when you love yourself this much and don’t need anything from anyone else. To make this technique even easier, you can use your smart phone and download a meditation timer app. A meditation timer app will allow you to program 3 mini meditation sections so you just hit start, close your eyes and allow the gongs to let you know when to start the next section. My favorite app is called Meditation Timer, is FREE and has a Buddha man on a brown background as the icon. Set your 3 meditation timer clocks to begin. For a beginner meditation session, start with all 3 clocks at 3 minutes and 33 seconds. For a more advanced meditation session, set your timer clocks to 3:33 and 11 minutes and 11 seconds and 3:33. Then sit in a comfortable, quiet, safe place and hit the start button to begin your journey. Each time your section is complete a gong will move you to your next section. At the end of your meditation, wrap your arms around yourself and give thanks to yourself for taking this time. Count several things in your life you are grateful for and count several things you love about your body. The most important part of this creative meditation is that you love, appreciate and adore yourself more every day AND you remember you are worthy of having it all.

The Practice of

Surrender I’m a struggler by nature, raised in the belief that no matter what I was doing, the solution was to try harder. Become better. In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali describes the observance of Ishvara pranidhana—literally, surrendering to the Source—as the way to Samadhi, the inner state of peace and oneness. It’s a place where we can literally just be in the present moment, the ultimate goal of the yogic path. Here’s a story on that and how this practice can enter our lives. I had been looking for answers and, recently I met someone with the ability to communicate with Spirit Guides—called Nā ’aumākua in Hawaiian culture. These beings may be human, animal or even possibly other life forms that come into our lives to assist our evolution. They may work with us for the duration of our lifetime or a shorter time period, even just minutes or hours.

—Crazy, I know. This is just an example on how our monkey minds take over thinking and planning how the journey and lessons should unfold. Life however works in rather simple ways. Here’s what actually happened. I took a trip to La Puerta, Baja California—one of the most nurturing, beautiful spots I’ve ever visited. The scenery is majestic: flower gardens, old stone walking paths, bridges that go over the Colorado river and charming casitas; the air is crisp and it smells like rosemary and pine. The retreat offers yoga, mindfulness and fitness activities from dawn to dusk making it the perfect getaway for body and spirit. Yet… sometimes we can find ourselves in the perfect place at the wrong time or with the wrong people.

I sat attentive in front of this channeler as she delivered a message: “You need to recover the energy of the mountain”.

The dichotomy of being with someone and feeling alone was getting to me at every level; I felt disconnected spirituality, emotionally. Here I was in this paradise and was supposed to feel happy like butterflies and lilies. Yet something was “off’, I felt restless.

What is that supposed to mean? How do I do this?—I thought. I observed my mind spin into an Indiana Joneslike vision quest: I’d go to Peru, hike the Andes path with a journal and protein bars in a backpack, surrounded by goats and lamas. At the top I’d encounter a shaman and figure out the message.

One morning, in a effort to de-clutter my mind and get some answers, I decided to go hike the trails of Mount Kuchuma…nothing like the fresh mountain air for clarity and peace. After a while of trekking, I realized I was very lost; missed my exit sign. There, hot and mentally exhausted from trying to figure a way out, appeared in

my path a big oak tree where I could rest in its shade. As I laid there in Savasana, I recalled the voice of my yoga teacher whispering the word “surrender”. Ahhh…I exhaled in relief. I placed a hand on my heart and cleansing tears rolled down my face. I had been stressing and building so much anxiety overthinking how to solve this inner turmoil and find the way out of the wild mountain’s terrain. In that moment I realized that neither the exit to the mountain nor the relationship could be figured out with my mind, but with my heart and soul. Taking some deep Ujjayi breaths, the fear and frustration slowly melted away as I felt an unconditional presence within. A knowing that somehow, everything always works out. I got up on my feet and it didn’t take more than five minutes to find a trail that took me back to the retreat center. When we stop worrying, the way is revealed. This magic switch goes on the moment we let go, when we stop looking and ALLOW guidance from the Universe to show us the way instead of us forcing the way. I know the practice of surrender can be challenging for us, especially since we’re trained all along to do the opposite. Also, I believe that we generate so much resistance because we confuse the spiritual process of renunciation

with giving up when it’s quite the contrary: over-doing and over thinking prevents us from letting the alchemical flow of life unfold. As Joseph Campbell quoted, ”we must be willing to let go of the life we’ve planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us.” I invite us all to stay open to life’s innumerable opportunities and challenges without agendas or the compulsion to seek things that enhance our pride or ‘security’; trusting this silent power that may never respond to our expectations means having faith. The essence of Ishvara Pranidhana and recovering the energy of the mountain the Shaman described is about trusting the Source and listening deeply to our inner voice, the essential core. It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. We are gathering the tools for our next climb.

the yoga of Ahimsa

Most of us think of yoga as a practice of physical postures designed to make us more flexible, strong and healthy. The practice of Yoga is actually over 5,000 years old and consists of a vast body of knowledge. The word ‘Yoga’ comes from the Sanskrit work yuj, which means yoke or union. An Indian sage named Patanjali recorded the practice of yoga in a collection of 136 aphorisms called the Yoga Sutras. These sutras provide the framework for many paths of yoga practiced today. According to the Yoga Sutras, the practice of yoga consists of eight limbs, which include guidelines for ethical perfection, physical postures (asanas), breathing practices, concentration and meditation. The first principle of ethical perfection upon which the entire science and art of yoga is based is Ahimsa. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word that means non-violence. It means to do our best to not cause harm in our thoughts, words and actions. What might life on this planet look like if we were committed to this basic principle? It seems that our priorities would change dramatically and we would value care over profit. We would approach all aspects of our lives from the foundation of caring for life. This single principle, if we choose to adopt it, is the foundation for peace on our planet. We are the ones 24

who can choose, in our daily actions, to end war and suffering for others. Every day we have the opportunity to practice ahimsa with our dietary choices. Every dollar that we spend on food is a vote for abuse or kindness, for devastation or sustainability. When we choose a diet that consists of fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains and legumes we are choosing ahimsa (non-violence). When we choose the more common way of eating consisting of meat, fowl, fish, dairy, and eggs we are choosing himsa (violence). What are we voting for? We have been socially indoctrinated from infancy by parents, teachers, clergy, media and our culture at large to repress our inherent compassion and disregard the abuse that our dietary choices cause to animals, the environment and, ironically, to human health. Now we can remove the blinders and question this cultural programming!

Here is some information to inspire more compassionate dietary choices that are in alignment with the values that we hold dear. There are many compelling reasons to choose a completely plant-based way of eating. Here are ten primary ones.

1

Animal Welfare The reason that sixty billion land animals (and over a trillion marine animals) are being abused and killed annually is because we are hiring people to do this with our voting dollars. When we purchase and eat these products, we are an agent of this abuse, and we’re also ingesting the biochemistry of terror and misery. Because there are no nutrients for which we need to harm animals, as millions of vegans can attest, we can choose vegan foods over meat, eggs, and dairy products. This is an effective way to put ahimsa into practice towards the animals, the environment and our health.

Eliminate World Hunger and Starvation

Dairy and meat products are particularly wasteful of land, grain, and resources. It takes up to sixteen pounds of grain to produce just one pound of meat. All that plant food can be used much more efficiently if it is fed directly to people. An acre of farmland can feed twenty times as many people eating GLAD (Global Loving Ahimsa Diet), than the Standard American Diet (SAD).

Reverse Water Depletion

Over forty percent of the world is facing water shortages. The meat industry alone uses over fifty percent of all U.S. water. Dairy production is also wasteful because of the necessity to irrigate feed crops. It is estimated that one gallon of California milk requires a thousand gallons of water. We can use this precious resource much more efficiently.

Reverse Deforestation

Animal agriculture accounts for more than eighty percent of deforestation, with roughly fifty million acres of Earth’s forests destroyed for cattle grazing and soy crops, planted to FALL 2017

feed imprisoned animals for meat, dairy, and eggs. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. They are vital to the life our planet. Switching to a plant-based diet will slow or stop the dangerous rate of deforestation that is threatening our world.

R everse Global Climate Destabilization

Carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are the biggest contributors to global warming. Dairy farming is a primary contributor to the accumulation of methane. The millions of confined dairy cows emit methane as part of their digestive processes, and their manure gives off nitrous oxide. Cheese is second only to beef in having the most devastating carbon footprint of all foods. Choosing plant-based foods significantly reverses this impact and reduces global warming.

Reverse Pollution

Animals imprisoned for meat, dairy, and eggs produce about 130 times more excrement than the entire human population, and though their waste is more toxic than human waste, disposal regulations are far less stringent. In addition, because these animals are injected, fed, and doused with pesticides and antibiotics, streams and aquifers are polluted with toxic chemicals, which then enter and contaminate whole ecosystems, sometimes including our drinking water.

Conserve Energy

Animal protein production requires more than eight times as much fossil fuel energy to produce than a comparable amount of plant protein, due in part to the large amount of corn, soy, alfalfa, and other grains and legumes that must be grown to feed them.

Improve Nutrition & Health

Heart disease and cancer are the two leading causes of death in the United States. Dietary cholesterol and saturated fats are major causes of heart attacks. The SAD diet is high in cholesterol and saturated fats, whereas the GLAD vegan diet is free of cholesterol and low in fat. The risk of heart attack and cancer is significantly reduced for those eating the GLAD diet. Dairy products lack fiber, carbohydrates, and iron, and are high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and inflammatory and acidifying animal proteins like casein. We can significantly improve the duration as well as quality of life by adopting the GLAD way of eating.

Eliminate Slavery

Few people realize the connection between animal slavery and human slavery. When people began enslaving wild sheep, goats, and then cows in Western Asia about ten thousand years ago, this led eventually to the first wars and the arising of slavery. As Dr. Martin Luther King said, “A threat to justice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere,” and Tolstoy wrote, “As long as there are slaughter houses there will be battlefields.” By replacing the mentality of domination and violence toward animals with lovingkindness and cooperation, animal liberation becomes human liberation and environmental liberation.

It’s the Right Thing to Do!

The food that is best for us is also best for the other forms of life on Earth, and for the life support systems upon which we all depend. Partaking of organic, whole plantbased foods, which are kind to animals, the environment and human health, contributes to personal and global peace and wellbeing.

While the yogic tradition has long recognized vegetarianism as the ideal— encouraging abstention from the violence and toxicity inherent in eating flesh and eggs—it has traditionally included dairy products. Now that spell is being broken and yoga practitioners from virtually all traditions are increasingly committing to vegan living as an essential foundation for their practice.

The first principle of ethical perfection upon which the entire science and art of yoga is based is Ahimsa.

This is a significant development, demonstrating the vibrancy and authenticity of the yoga community as it becomes increasingly obvious that virtually all dairy operations, both organic and conventional, are inherently abusive in many ways. For example, as standard procedure, cows are impregnated against their will on “rape-racks” to induce lactation. After nine months, they give birth and their babies are immediately stolen from them, causing them both enormous distress. Denied their mothers’ nurturance and milk, the calves survive, ironically, on a mixture of soymilk, cows’ blood, and additives. The cows are immediately impregnated again while lactating, which quickly destroys their health, and their physical misery mirrors the emotional agony of being confined, sexually abused, and robbed of their children. Of the four calves that a dairy cow typically births, one will become a slave to replace her mother, and the other three will be killed either at birth or after a few months of excruciating hyper-confinement for veal. These calves bring in money for their flesh, skin, and the rennin in their stomachs that are used to coagulate cheese. In fact, it is common practice to send a cow to slaughter when she is eight to nine months pregnant with her fifth calf so the industry can kill them both to increase profits. continued >>>

Though their natural lifespan is 25 years, cows are sent off to slaughter at only 4 to 5 years of age, debilitated by this abuse.

This culturally approved stealing of the sovereignty and the purposes of other beings has devastating effects not just on the victims but on our world as well. Dairy products are detrimental not just to the cows that suffer by being reduced to milk machines, but also to fragile ecosystems, wildlife, climate stability, and genetic diversity, all of which are harmed by dairy operations. In addition to the trauma inflicted on cows and ecosystems, dairy industry workers are also traumatized by being forced routinely to mutilate and abuse the animals they are using and eventually killing. As dairy consumers, we are paying them to do work that tends to bring out the worst in them. Hungry people are also harmed, because grains, legumes, land, water, fertilizer, and other resources are fed to cows that inefficiently convert these precious inputs to greenhouse gases, toxic sewage, and dairy products for the privileged, while hundreds of millions of people go hungry. Vegan living, as a contemporary practice of the ancient principle of ahimsa, is an authentic and effective response to this violence and waste. Cows’ milk is intended for baby calves who put on six hundred pounds in their first year, and who have the digestive enzyme rennin to break down casein, the main protein in milk. We lack this enzyme and casein causes enormous havoc in humans, as contemporary research has confirmed, increasing the risk of childhood difficulties such as sore throats, runny noses, ear aches, and acne, as well as autoimmune diseases, diabetes, kidney disease, obesity, breast, prostate, and colon cancer, and other conditions caused by the inflammatory and acidifying effects of dairy foods. Additionally, the pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, and heavy metals in our environment are typically fat-soluble and end up in the fat of cows who are fed large quantities of mostly GMO corn, soy, and alfalfa, as well as fish meal and rendered animal by-products, and also hormones, antibiotics, and other drugs and chemicals. These toxins end up concentrated in milk and especially in cream, cheese, and butter. Beyond these physical toxins are the metaphysical toxins. In buying dairy, we are supporting (and directly causing) terror, despair, confinement, desperation, panic, sadness, and anxiety, because these are the routine experiences of cow mothers and calves in dairy operations. We consume products from this cruel industry because we have been taught to do so. None of us, on our own, would ever attempt to eat or drink mammary secretions from other species. The more we understand about nutrition, the more we understand that most of us have been given the gift of physical bodies that don’t require any animal to suffer to get all the nutrients we need to be radiantly healthy. Swami Satchidananda said, “Peace is my God. When you are in Peace, you are in God.” There is a well known mantra in the Yogic tradition which says: “Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu.” This translates as: “May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words and actions of my own life contribute in some way to the that happiness and freedom for all.” This mantra is calling upon us to embody ahimsa. Eating animal products goes completely against this principle. Albert Schweitzer said, “We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace.” Until and unless we treat those who are vulnerable in our hands with kindness and mercy, we ourselves will not experience peace. Ahimsa is the first and foremost principle upon which the entire science of yoga is based and lovingkindness is our very own true nature. It is our sincere hope and prayer that this article provides information and inspiration to make more compassionate dietary choices that are in alignment with the practice of ahimsa. May our practice of Yoga continue to increase our physical, mental, and spiritual health, as well as contribute to building a world of freedom, justice, and compassion for all of us on this beautiful and abundant Earth.

Pauwela Store by Jody Mountain A little gem has sprung up for those of us living in the heart of Ha’iku, Maui. Pauwela Store, just opening its doors this past July, specializes in providing health-conscious packaged food, local produce, many vegan and mostly organic products. It’s a timely gift to those of us who recognize the value of eating organic food.

Storm – providing friendly service

Owners Mike Grier and Junko Nagoshi said they saw an opportunity to be of service to the community by providing convenient, accessible and healthconscious raw and prepared foods. Traveling to the increasingly busy centers of Pa’ia and Kahului to frequent the other nearby health food stores on-island has become a traffic and parking ‘adventure’, to put it nicely. In the midst of quiet, friendly and rural Ha’iku, Pauwela Store offers fresh organic produce, ‘grab-and-go’ prepared snacks, fresh organic juices and smoothies, organic frozen goods, as well as fresh local flowers and healthy cleaning products for the home. They carry a vast selection of major vegan brands like Tofurky, Field Roast and Follow Your Heart. Nagoshi and Grier said they believe that living on Maui should mean being able to access produce conveniently and affordably. All of the fresh produce will be completely organic and locally sourced, with plans to continue to build their inventory of locally made offerings over time. For this writer, the luxury of slipping a mile down the road to do my grocery shopping has been wonderful. Although I love Pa’ia town, eliminating that drive, and still getting most things that I need on a daily basis has added a lot of ease to my life, not to mention saving on gas! Living Aloha publisher, Carlos Garcia who also lives close by, is thrilled that in half the time it takes to find parking in Pa’ia, he can drive to Pauwela Store, buy what he needs, drive back home and be eating it.

Being from Japan, Mindfulness has played an important role in my life. Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one’s attention to experiences occurring in the present moment, which can be developed through the practice of meditation and other training. Mindfulness is the word that comes to mind when I’m at Vegan Hills. It’s one thing to go to a vegan restaurant and have amazing food, but it’s an entirely different thing when you experience a beautiful meal that’s crafted with

great care in an atmosphere filled with joy and kindness. All the staff is vegan, genuinely care about the planet, all animals-both human and non humanand provides great service. The Vegan Hills team is devoted to a mission of offering delicious, healthy, fresh, natural, and non-GMO vegan meals. Their dishes use mostly organic as well as local ingredients. Their goal is to prepare nutritious vegan meals for the discriminating connoisseur with refined taste, with an international menu that offers the very best in Western and Asian gourmet cooking. Vegan Hills’ aesthetics say that meals should be healthy as well as have an artistic presentation that is stylish, elegant and beautiful, thereby to delight all the senses-taste, scent, sight, sound and touch. The Zen “minimalist” aesthetic of their food and atmosphere is inspired by the Japanese Wabi-Sabi taste that appreciates the graceful beauty of simplicity, frugality and naturalness, right down the placement of their microgreens on the entree. Executive Vegan Chef/Owner Megumi Odin was born in Tokyo, Japan where she was a professional food stylist who designed elegant meal settings for

magazines, television programs, and other productions. After leaving Japan she founded Peace Café, the first vegan restaurant in Honolulu, then started Satori, a pop up restaurant at the Soto Mission Zen Temple. Her mission is to spread the vegan lifestyle everywhere. We were there for Saturday brunch and they have a little different, but still amazing, menu for the other days. After ordering our food we kept seeing all these incredible looking plates flying by us and wound up ordering 4 dishes for 2 of us thinking we’d just sample them a little. We finished everything. The first scrumptious all vegan and organic dish was called “Good Morning”; 2 ‘buttermilk’ pancakes, tempeh bacon, tofu scramble, salad and non-oil roasted potatoes. Next up was the “Mexican Breakfast.” It contained tofu scramble, brown rice, chili, avocados, sour cream and mixed greens. We especially enjoyed their beautifully presented “Strawberry Princess” with 3 pancakes topped with strawberries, their own strawberry sauce and “whipped cream.”
