Welcome~ to our Annual Yoga issue This issue we bring you a few different views on how to experience yoga. Yoga is not only something we do for exercise. Yoga does more than burn calories and tone muscles. It’s a total mind-body workout that combines strengthening and stretching poses with deep breathing and meditation or relaxation. Yoga is kind of like a massage except that instead of moving your body parts using hands externally, you are moving them through twisting them internally. Yoga is like a massage for your bones, skin and organs from the inside. It’s been around for more than 5,000 years and still continues to grow as more people are exposed to its benefits. There are more than 100 different forms of yoga. Some are fast-paced and intense. Others are gentle and relaxing. Visit a yoga studio and let them explain what type of yoga might be the best for your body and needs. Living Aloha Magazine is getting much more interactive with the community— We are sponsoring and attending the Hawaii Yoga Festival at Kalani on the Big Island. If you want to join us please register using the code LIVEALOHA. Kalani has a free exclusive offer for you and we will give you a free Living Aloha t-shirt. [see back page] We’re offering free Spinning classes at Enjoy The Ride MAUI in Lahaina on September 17th and October 8th. [details on page 20] The first VegFest Oahu is scheduled for September 24th. Why Yoga? by Denise Alfie
What if our religion was each other? If our practice was our life? If prayer was our words? What if the Temple was the Earth? If forests were our church? If holy water—the rivers, lakes and oceans? What if meditation was our relationships? If the Teacher was life? If wisdom was self-knowledge? If love was the center of our being? The human race is now in an unprecedented evolutionary crisis—a global dark night. As we know, it is from the fertile darkness that light emerges. Potentially, there’s a birth canal for a new, embodied, mindful humanity. In our commercial and high-tech era, we are constantly seeking new and more sophisticated external forms of happiness, short-term enjoyment and relief. However, all these things do not actually change us internally or give us more control over how we think, act and feel. We are becoming largely inert spectators, letting other people draw our lives, yet the side effects of this reality are becoming obvious: depression, anxiety, drug abuse, boredom. Among our youth there’s a growing unrest, frustration, anti-social behavior, environmental neglect, bullying, etc. And our education system plays a fundamental role in the whole equation. There’s a lack of education on healing modalities, self-knowledge, inner skills, environmentalism, healthy relationships, and connected living. 8

Introducing Yoga into our educational system does not require drawing complex plans, nor does it require huge monetary allocation. All that is required is a determined effort and execution. Simple asana practices, philosophy and pranayama, can bring about wonderful results. This is why Yoga is part of the answer. I want to pass on to you the inspiration of the yoga legacy we’ve been given by our ancestors who observed the cosmos and had daily practices and rituals to align with the rhythms of nature and an organic way of living. When we align to this ancestral calling through yoga, our bodies, minds and hearts connect to an incredibly vast and universal source of energy-life force-that is called “Prana” or “Chi”. When we access and channel “Prana”, we create new neural pathways of transformation that result in a unique mind-body “wiring” that allows us to tap into our feelings, actions, attitudes, attachments and resistances with a whole different perspective.

“Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu.” May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life contribute in some way to that happiness and to that freedom for all.
Yoga not only offers “asanas” or physical practice, but meditation, breath techniques and a strong philosophical core with moral, ethical and societal guidelines to help us lead a Pono (spiritually righteous) life. Living Aloha means Being Yoga: it is both a work out and a work in. With regular and simple practices, a balance is achieved: we feel more relaxed from tension, get clarity of thought, self confidence, cheerfulness and a sharper memory. So as far as these qualities are concerned, Yoga should be part of a holistic answer and new paradigm of conscious living. We cannot go any longer using old methods that have proven over and over to fail and cannot fulfill a human being’s creative potential. We need the values of oneness, authenticity, peace and unity. So instead of sitting silently and allowing the sorry state of our society to continue in the decay, I invite us all to become the solution. Teachers, parents, brothers, let’s make Yoga a fundamental subject, like math or grammar. Let’s ask for holistic education from our governments and nourish it from the core of our homes. Let’s teach our Keiki practices that heal from within and fill our souls instead of feeding the popular belief that in order to be happy we need more stuff, achievements and online followers. Yoga offers us a much healthier approach in which we need to approve ourselves, love ourselves, and know ourselves. I hope our teachers, thinkers and especially our leaders, take yoga into serious consideration because it offers great possibilities, solutions and hope.

Yoga
Ancient Cellular by Jody Mountain
Though there are many aspects and definitions for Yoga, I have always loved the simplicity of the one most of my yoga teachers have offered: a conscious union of body and mind, creating more harmony in our being. When I was introduced to the work of Ancient Lomi Lomi (also known as Ke Ala Hoku — Pathway to the Stars), I was surprised to find that most of the work was not at all about bodywork, but about the awakening of our own cellular consciousness. One method used to explore the Great Mystery inside of our bodies is called ‘Ho’omanamana’. In the words of my teacher, Kahu Abraham Kawai’i, Ho’omanamana is “stretching as awareness of physical, psychological and energetic body and its’ connection to breath. Ho’omanamana is taking old, ancient or unused energies and converting them into contributing functions.” As I dove deeply into this powerful work, I came to view Ho’omanamana very much like a form of ancient Yoga. Consciously making gentle circular, or stretching movements throughout the joints, muscles, liquids and connective tissues of the body, I discovered an experience of deep interconnection between tissues, breath, awareness, emotions, memories, thoughts and expanded consciousness. Beginning stages of Ho’omanamana allow us to begin to listen deeply to the many layers of our being by paying particular attention to breath and sensation as we move. As a dancer, used to pushing my body to (and past) its’ limits, I was fascinated by the gentleness of the practice and it’s encouragement to honor the early boundaries of my range of motion. The slow movements felt deeply comfortable to me and I would wake up early to give myself plenty of time for the practice. For over three years, I practiced Ho’omanamana for a minimum of 3 hours each morning. To my surprise, I found it to be full of emotion. Anger, sadness and fear would emerge unexpectedly as I moved towards different positions. I spent much of that time in tears, as layers of sadness, trapped in my tissues, came rising to the surface. Most of the time, I had no idea why I was crying, but felt great relief emotionally as well as more and more freedom in my body.
After each session, I felt as if I had more ‘space’ to breathe, think, feel and move. As it evolves, Ho’omanamana begins to include practices to develop strength, deeper flexibility and build Mana (life force energy). Like Yoga, this ancient body of work approaches the moving body as a foundation for awareness to arise and for consciousness to flow more freely through all of us, structure included. In the paradigm of ancient Lomi Lomi, the body is recognized as a huge part of the subconscious mind, holding within it, every experience we were unable to ‘metabolize’ consciously. As we are able to ‘let go’ and be guided by the wisdom of our sensations, we are shown various pathways, through the complexity of our being, which result in deep healing. In this way, Ho’omanamana is like an ‘adaptogen’ — an herb which responds uniquely to each person’s particular needs. One persons’ trajectory of healing from a car accident or a broken arm, will be very different from anothers’. As we start listening on a cellular level, we realize that our own unique pathway of healing is already here, waiting for our open attention. Our cellular consciousness knows how deeply to breathe, which positions to hold, how quickly to move in any given moment, what emotions may need to be released, what awarenesses need to be uncovered, etc. Listening and following, in this ancient practice, gave me a potent and grounded pathway to access all aspects of my system, and promote a profound sense of well-being. I have found Ho’omanaamana to be, like Yoga, a union of the vast dimensions of our being, allowing us to approach Life with more wholeness. Mahalo to Kahu and all who came before him, for bringing this profound work to the modern world.

by Denise Caiazzo Yoga is serious stuff. We show up at class with focused concentration and dedication week after week, year after year. We devote ourselves to practicing with precision… to embodying the fullest expression of the asanas (physical postures)… to surrendering deeply into pranayama (breathing exercises). We hope to progress as time goes by, to be happier and healthier. Isn’t that why we keep unrolling our mats and plunging with gusto into our best yogic condition? Maybe it’s time to lighten up a bit about the “How do I get my leg up there?,” the “Where does my foot go?,” the “How long do I hold that breath?,” the “What time of the day should I practice?,” and the “Which direction should I face?.” Imagine if you released all of that and let your body, mind and soul simply flow into playfulness? Just like when you used to go to the playground -- or the beach -- as a kid! With a little levity, you’ll find the true loving essence of yoga. So with my tongue in cheek, I have a few confessions to make… some quirky observations from my 20-some years on the mat. I’ll bet you’ve had thoughts like these, too. Ready? Confession #1: I LIKE IT when the teacher enthusiastically proclaims, “Denise that’s amazing!” (when I’m extended as far as I can go into King Dancer pose) or “Wow Denise!” (when I’m in the full expression of Pigeon). It’s not so much about my ego being fed. It just feels good to be noticed and acknowledged. Know what I mean? Oh, but wait, was she talking to me or is there another Denise in class? Hmmmm. Confession #2: I SNEAK A PEEK in the mirror sometimes when I’m in Down Dog or Tadasana to see if my lower back is straight, if my ribs are tucked in, if my pelvis is neutral. Perfection is not the goal. We’re all perfect exactly as we are right now in this very moment. What’s important is surrendering to The Now. To this body that’s a whole lot older (I mean more mature) than when I started doing yoga. But still I check the mirror to see what I look like and where I can make an adjustment. And then I hear a voice in my head saying, “Holy Moly we sure look silly with our butts up in the air like that! What would aliens say if they dropped in on our class right now?” Oops, what was the teacher saying?
SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER 2016
Confession #3: I FEEL A LITTLE CONSPICUOUS when I don’t do a posture along with the rest of the class. Every good teacher will tell you to follow their words but always listen to your body first and foremost. If that twisty knee pose doesn’t feel good to you, don’t do it… if you’re really tired and don’t want to fly into the high energy of the Vinyasa, just rest in Child’s Pose. And be mindful of injuries. Because I partially compressed a vertebrae when I was 40, I can no longer safely do Reclining Twists. It changed my practice forever. I used to love letting my knees drop all the way to the left and then the right while keeping my back and shoulders flat on the ground. But, no more. So alas, I sit it out… or I do another posture, maybe a seated twist. Still I can’t help wondering if my fellow yogis are thinking that I’m a diva or what’s wrong with me that I’m not doing exactly what they’re doing. Truth is, I’ll bet they didn’t even notice because their monkey mind was whispering (or yelling) at them, too!
lets out a, well let’s say some trapped air? I know you smiled, even if just to yourself. See, levity is good. Confession #5: THERE’S NOTHING I WOULD RATHER DO than yoga. Really nothing. It’s great for your body, healing and rejuvenating. It’s powerful for your mind, calming and centering. And it can transform your spirit, bringing you into alignment with a fountain of Eternal Energy. Okay, I got a little significant on you again. So back to the point… you are a brilliant, beaming Divine Light that happens to be housed in a physical body. And you have a very human “monkey mind.” The next time it’s unleashed, give it permission to dance along with your yoga practice. Notice it and let it go. Love it with all your heart. And as you witness your seemingly endless internal dialogue, chuckle a bit at the silliness of it all. Laughter is good for your soul… on and off the mat!
Namaste.
Confession #4: I SECRETLY enjoy hearing my classmates breathing and feeling the energy of our bodies rise and fall in unison. If I’m really honest about it, I don’t even like to do asanas on my own. Because there’s something so amazing about doing yoga in community, all of us connected in purpose and action. Oh, and what about when the guy next to you starts snoring? Or someone over there

yoga is for every body by Denise LaBarre
The word yoga is most commonly translated into English as union or connection yet it comes from the Sanskrit word meaning listen. Think of it as listening within to the body. Whether this listening is guided by a live instructor, done alone, or done in front of a computer screen, a yoga practice is a great way to realign yourself throughout a hectic life. These days most of us spend too much time sitting in front of a screen and/or sitting in a car and we aren’t getting the exercise and movement our bodies need for healthy balance. Sitting constricts the flow of energy in the hips, shoulders, chest and body, overall. A yoga practice brings your breath and awareness out of your head and back into your body—especially to the parts that need it the most as you listen to their calls of stiffness or pain. If you don’t know much about yoga already, think of it as a huge, old tree with many branches. You don’t need to know the minutiae of all the branches or all the fancy terms. The trick is to find a branch that fits your needs and reap the benefits of a rebalancing practice. The list of yoga styles is endless; some emphasize the form of the pose (asana) or the flow of breath and energy through movement. There’s hot yoga; partnered, acrobatic yoga; strength-building yoga, restorative yoga, chanting yoga… even on-line classes you can follow at your convenience. All involve awareness of the breath through the body, and at least a little movement and stretching. I recommend starting with a live teacher, either privately, or in a class. You need live feedback and correction to form good foundational habits. Once you have a good foundation of principles such as basic positions, how it feels to ease into a pose, and basic breath practices, you can do a routine anytime, any place that suits you. For me, doing some yogic stretching in a quiet corner of an airport between flights or even on the plane makes traveling easier on my body. 14

SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER 2016
Even if all I do is the same routine every Monday in yoga class, it brings me back to a base point and to what is going on with my body, now. One week I’ll be more flexible, the next week, more emotional—but I wouldn’t have that awareness without my routine yoga practice. I go to class for support in paying attention to my body and it’s needs in that moment. Also, because I hold healing space for others in my work, it’s a lovely relief to have someone hold space for my rebalancing. A yoga practice will contribute to your life, no matter how stiff, flexible, old, young, out-of-shape, or fit your body is. Extreme athletes need a meditative/breath practice to balance the ways they push their bodies hard. Couch potatoes need stretching and movement. No matter what you do (or don’t do) with your body, yoga can bring you more balance, relaxation, and ease. The trick is finding a practice that feels good and that you’ll continue doing. Older or Injured? Look for classes where the instructor gives options to back off or intensify a pose. Every body has areas that are relatively more and less tight; and ways their bodies simply won’t stretch. I’m a mesomorph, with short limbs and thick muscles and my body has never been able to do a proper eagle pose, let alone as I get older. I have learned to let the young/fit/ ectomorphs twist into pretzel shapes without envy and focus on what my body is asking of me in the moment. My body is always grateful for the practice and doesn’t get injured if I listen to how far it can go that day. The more I can’t do a pose easily, the more I know I need my yoga practice to maintain function and flexibility. Injury certainly happens in Yoga but can be minimized by going slowly and listening to your body rather than you mind, which often urges you to compete or “get it right.” If you take as your priority listening to your body without
pushing where it isn’t ready to go, you can feel confident that you won’t hurt yourself. The aging market keeps expanding and we all want to feel good in our bodies. There is demand for more yoga instructors who are adept at guiding their students through limitation and rehabilitation of injury. Yoga especially speaks to the ectomorphic need for stretching and coming out of the head and into the body. Body types – Most of us have a blend of type characteristics but tend more toward one of the three poles: ectomorph –long, bean-shaped body, with lean muscle and minimal fat -prefers thinking and pondering mesomorph – apple-shaped body with short bones and dense, thick muscles - prefers doing and physical action endomorph – fleshy, pearshaped body - prefers feeling
Not only do different bodies have different capacities, even different sides of the same body can be radically tighter or more flexible. These differences deserve your awareness, your listening so they get the treatment they need. Emotional opening – Camel pose and other poses that stretch open the heart and belly—those areas protected and constricted by all that sitting and hunching—often catalyze tears and other emotional release. If you find yourself getting emotional as you hold a pose or stretch further, welcome it as a bonus of the practice. Social aspects – Going to a class can be a great way to meet new people. There are classes for pregnant mothers, classes for older and/ or injured bodies, classes for elite athletes… Taking a yoga class is a
great way to connect with others in your physical niche or a new social one. If you feel intimidated by the young and fit who look great in stretchy tights, remember that the practice is about listening within. To the extent that anyone focuses on what others are wearing, or how far someone else can bend, they’re missing the point of the practice. From my perspective, the more yoga intimidates you physically, the more you probably need it. Whether you focus on breathing, fitness, flexibility, strength, social connection, pose form,—any extent you listen to more closely to your body and emotional state, you will improve your health and enjoyment of life. Do your body a favor and give it some union and connection this week. Living Aloha Magazine’s Green Pages are full of yoga resources on each island to get you started.

I’ve been there for an occasional yoga class or dance event for the day. I knew the schedules would line up some day to immerse myself in a full yoga festival. As a yoga lover, there’s no better event than the Hawaii Yoga Festival for me to really experience Kalani for a week. This fall, Kalani will be hosting the 2016 Hawaii Yoga Festival on its 120-acre retreat center campus set in the lush jungle of east Hawaii. The Hawaii Yoga Festival, now in its 4th year, embodies Kalani’s mission to facilitate 16

personal transformation via nature immersion on their beautiful grounds one minute from the ocean, discovery of Hawaiian culture, and wellness practices. Yogis of all skilllevels will explore the many meanings of balance, guided by Hawaii’s most talented teachers on and off the mat. Festival-goers will engage in strengthening and restorative asanas, meditation, kirtan, and wellness treatments. Activities throughout the festival will be tailored to support cultivation of personal balance—giving participants new tools and awareness for application in everyday life. Attendees will also be invited to enjoy Hawaiian culture events, freshly-prepared meals from the Kalani kitchen, and opportunities for self-discovery and connection. Many individuals go to Kalani in search of balance—and for a break from the hectic pace of life. This year’s Hawaii Yoga Festival is dedicated to that intention; finding balance between work and play, effort and release, connection and solitude. “We hope our guests will leave feeling restored, and take away new strategies for creating balance at home,” says Joel Tan, Kalani’s Executive Director.
The 2016 Hawaii Yoga Festival opens with a Hawaiian culture presentation, including a hula performance. In addition to the roster of diverse classes and lectures throughout the week at Kalani, there will be excursions to sites in Puna such as Kapoho Tide Pools, Kaimu Black Sand Beach, and the village of Pahoa—threatened by lava flows from Pu’u O’o vent in 2015. A Full Moon Drum and Dance with internationally-renowned drummer Chris Berry will close the festival, bringing everyone together one last time for a devotional musical performance. For festival details, visit HawaiiYogaFestival.com.

Love Your Body, Love Your Life by Jennifer Loftus
Love Your Body, Love Your Life is one of Nia’s mottos. Nia is a cardio dance group fitness class to music that incorporates martial arts, dance arts and healing arts. Nia’s philosophy is that through movement we find health. Nia fitness is based on the idea that exercise should feel good inside and out. Nia as a lifestyle practice is a way for me to move through life, choosing wellbeing in body, mind and spirit. As I continue to condition for life in my NOW body and guide others to do so, I am always inviting in awareness. The choices invited by the Nia practice help me remember I always have a choice in any situation, and that gives me personal power. And ahhh… that ever present element of life… change! Nia is never the same and conditions me to dance with change. I am always fascinated by the science of the body and how to move with it. Nia allows me to continue to choose the sensation of pleasure as I move—avoiding the “no pain, no gain” mentality. I want to feel good in my body as long as I am in a body, and be able to do all the things I want to do. A functional fitness practice that is fun, this draws me to Nia like a magnet. As I call on the tools and gifts of the Nia practice, I enhance my life force energy. The more life force energy I have, the more I can allow what I bring to the planet to ripple out into the world and encourage others to do the same. Moving with Nia keeps me in balance as I invite in and embody the different movement energies of Nia, keeping them ready to call into action off the mat. Tuning into, embracing and moving WITH my palette of emotions through music and movement keeps my emotion in motion. I remember to play and have fun with Nia! As I continue to listen to the voice of my body throughout my day and what it needs, life in a body becomes more pleasurable. As I move with greater consciousness and understanding, my body, mind and spirit respond with a resounding, “YES!” Jennifer Loftus is a certified and licensed brown belt Nia instructor. She teaches Nia classes twice a week at Island Spirit Yoga in Lahaina, Maui. Jennifer holds space for authenticity, truth, inner wisdom, playfulness, creativity, healing and fun in her classes. www.movesingheal.com or islandspirityoga.com 18

what is
spinning?
and Why is it so popular?
by Jeannette Howard “Spinning®” or Indoor Cycling is one of the latest and fastest growing trends in the fitness industry. So what is indoor cycling and how could riding a stationary bike indoors have millions of fanatical followers, including athletes and celebrities like David Beckham, the Kardashians, and Lady Gaga flocking to studios and raving about all the benefits via twitter accounts and social media? First of all, indoor cycling classes have evolved considerably over the last decade. No longer are these classes held in a typical 500 square foot room in a gym basement with a wood floor, bright lights, a boombox, and if you’re lucky---a set of mirrors to check your form. But today, they resemble more of a modern day nightclub atmosphere that is candle-lit, and outfitted with huge projection screens. Imagine bicycling through the Swiss Alps or taking on the Tour de France or watching a Katy Perry concert and pedaling to the beat in unison with rows of other riders, as an instructor is on stage wearing a wireless mic encouraging the group to give every ounce of effort and get to the top of a hill while a DJ level sound system blares music in the background. Cutting edge and trend setting fitness studios are producing high-level entertainment and motivation that is highly addictive and retaining high volumes of members for two reasons… Classes are FUN and you get RESULTS! Enjoy The Ride MAUI is the first of its kind on the island---a studio that is dedicated to cycling. The doors were opened in Lahaina on December of 2014 and since then, it’s grown a loyal following with both Maui residents and visitors alike, all drawn to the positive vibes that come out of challenging yourself in a group environment. Several classes sell out weekly and the studio continues to upgrade the standard of teaching, and continues to raise the bar and bring in new and exciting rides every month to keep the classes fresh and exciting. The studio owners, Jeannette Howard and Philip Raya created this boutique studio to offer something new and exciting to Maui. Howard, an avid traveler had taken 20

numerous indoor cycling classes internationally and on the Mainland and wanted to recreate this type of exciting experience here at home on Maui. Raya had recently relocated to Maui from Santa Monica, where he managed and partnered in a trendy LA gym that catered to celebrities and Hollywood elites like Gene Simmons of KISS, his wife Shannon Tweed, and TV stars like David Duchovny. Combining Howard’s creative vision with Raya’s fitness expertise, Enjoy The Ride MAUI was born.

Maui members that attend daily classes have been saying a lot. Just recently, Jill Huschke thanked the owners for opening the studio; she shared that she never exercised before and ever since she has started coming to Enjoy The Ride MAUI, she feels welcomed and is committed to being healthier. In fact, she recruited her husband Ron and together they have lost 80 pounds, Jill lost 50 pounds and Ron is down 30 pounds to achieve his ideal goal weight. “It is addicting because it just makes you feel so good that you keep coming back for more,” says Lorrie Robusto, a local resident and member at Enjoy the Ride MAUI. Plus, you can burn anywhere from 400 to 600-plus calories per ride and weight loss is a huge benefit.” Some riders have burned up to 1000 calories on a single ride with elite cyclist and coach Brian Acker known to push his riders for 60 minutes at race pace sprinting intervals.
The Majority of Today’s classes are Full Body Workouts and not just Cardio. Riders do 45 to 60 minute rides that consist of not only cycling intervals, but also paired with light hand weights. Upper body exercises and core work are performed in class to give a very efficient and complete workout.

SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER 2016
Kuleana coalition
by Sam Small
Hawai’i is unlike any other state in the United States. Few people realize that the domination of the Hawaiian Islands for the past 175 years, first by the Plantation System and later by the U.S. Military, has resulted in an unnaturally consolidated political and economic Power Elite that today is controlled by profit-driven, off-island corporate interests. These controlling interests seem to seek only to exploit Hawaii’s delicately balanced natural resources and benefit few of the people who actually live here, be they Hawaiian or Other. Hawaii’s indigenous people, the Kanaka Maoli, have been living under the thumb of plantation and military oppression for four or five generations. Long enough for many to grow up today believing that to be oppressed and exploited is “normal”. But Maui County is anything but normal and, typically, the Spirit of Maui has provided its people with an extraordinary, “perfect storm” opportunity to take back control of our own destiny.
The opportunity at hand is to elect at least five of the current Maui County Council candidates who are committed to upholding the Public Trust Doctrine and truly serve the people’s and the land’s long-term interests, not shortterm corporate profits. Historically, Maui’s voter turnout has been extraordinarily low and biased, which means real change can happen here even if only a small portion of our community is motivated to vote in their own best interests. Businesses and their employees who directly benefit financially from Big Ag and runaway development are already active in local politics. They contribute as much as they can to candidates who will protect their vested interests. You see their names printed in the local paper, as if to announce which candidates the local machine favors.
Monsanto. These special interest groups work aggressively to suppress Home Rule and seem to support, without question, all proposals submitted by off-island interests, no matter how profit-driven or destructive they are to the quality of life here in the long term. If folks would just consider the source of the instructions they get and imagine what life will be like here for their grandkids if these off-island interests continue to get their way, they may choose to vote differently this time. Remember, no one sees what you choose inside the voting booth. However, it is the oppressed people, who have been culturally exploited by the Powers-That-Be, who for generations have not been participating in local politics, and who, if motivated to vote, can make the biggest difference in this election.
Other voters simply do what they are told by construction unions, realtors associations, Forward Progress or

1) Some Hawaiians don’t participate as a matter of principle, because they believe voting would validate a “fake system” based on the illegal occupation of their sovereign nation. 2) Other Hawaiians do not feel empowered to vote because there’s rarely a candidate to support who truly represents them and their needs. 3) And still others, including many non-Hawaiians, say they feel intimidated by the Power Elite. We’ve heard from far too many County employees, small business people and home owners who have business before the County, who say that they are fearful of getting involved in politics or even making a campaign contribution to the “wrong candidate” because the public disclosure of those contributions will get them “in trouble”. The extraordinary opportunity at hand in this year’s election has answers to all three of these roadblocks to meaningful change. Several of them exist for the very first time. It started in 2014 when, for the first time ever, a citizen’s initiative collected enough petition signatures to get a proposed law on the election ballot. Citizens here recognized that the agro-chemical companies are exploiting loopholes in the federal regulatory system (that they themselves designed) to perform open-field experiments on genetically modified crops and restricted-use chemical cocktails, upwind of our communities. The law called for the companies to stop their experiments until a study can show that what they are doing in Maui County, specifically, is causing no undue harm to our people or our local environment. History was made when Monsanto and Dow reported the most money per capita ever spent on a local initiative election in the United States, over $8 Million, (with more surely spent under the table) and elected Maui County officials openly spread lies trying to defeat the law. History was made again on Election Day when the people rose to the calling and duly voted to approve the law. And yet again days later, when the same Maui County officials turned against the people to collude with the corporations and refuse to certify or enforce the people’s vote. These outrageous and unprecedented violations of the public trust have fueled a fire that has been smoldering in this community for a long time. Activists, Hawaiians and others, have risen up to demand action on a number of issues, and the community has responded with its support. Recent outpourings of public testimony against several environmentally and culturally exploitative residential and commercial developments have been extraordinarily effective in shutting these inappropriate projects down. Because the public’s support for dealing with issues facing our community and the demand for change to our obviously corrupt local government is finally clear and present, candidates have come forth for this year’s election like never before.

SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER 2016
Candidates, who are your neighbors, and who truly understand the hopes, dreams and needs of the Kanaka Maoli and other Maui families who have not been heard or served by local politics for far too long. Candidates, who are indeed worth voting for, are putting their necks on the block, and are asking for your support. The Kuleana Coalition for Change (KCC) has identified candidates for Maui County Council, and the State House who have made a commitment to uphold the Public Trust Doctrine as a guiding principle for their decision-making. That most of these candidates are indeed Hawaiian is once again historic. As to the principle of not voting, one of the current candidates for County Council, Trinette Furtado, herself a Kanaka, recently made this call to action: “We are seeing the reality of this “fake system” all around us, in our people going hungry and houseless. This is happening with or without our intervention. How can we change it? We have to ensure that there is still something left for our Keiki when we finally reach Independence. If we are so hardcore as to not vote we will turn around and there will be nothing left for our Keiki, because this fake system will have given it all away. We must fight in any way that we can and that includes getting involved to vote. ”
So with good reasons to vote and candidates worth voting for, we as a community needed to deal with the issue of our people’s very real fear of getting in trouble for publically making contributions to candidate’s campaigns. That’s exactly why the Kuleana Coalition for Change was created. As a 501(c)(4), Independent Expenditure Committee, there is no limit to the funds it can receive or spend and it does not have to disclose the identity of any individual who contributes, no matter the size of the contribution. Its mission is to empower individuals in our community to participate in local politics without fear that their business or employment will suffer retaliation from the Power Elite, as has been the way of life here since the emergence of the plantations. Furthermore, to raise the bar in our local politics from the negative personal attacks that candidates suffered at the hands of some political committees in 2014, the Kuleana Coalition has incorporated a promise into its platform to only present positive messaging. Indeed that message is included in its tag line: “The People’s Positive Voice in Maui County”. Candidates who the KCC does not support can expect to see it present information only on what is fair game; the facts of their voting records and
the connecting dots between their campaign statements and special interests that do business in the county. On its website the KCC calls on any candidate who benefits from negative advertising generated by any committee to publicly denounce the practice and demand that it stop. It’s actually kind of poetic that the very same Super Pac committee structure that’s doing so much damage on the mainland, with the extraordinary amounts of money that it allows into politics with no public disclosure of source, is actually the mechanism of free speech to an oppressed population living in Hawaii. And this is not just a Hawaiian thing, this is for everyone who has a stake in Maui County’s future, even those who never imagined that to live here was to live under the oppression of a power structure unlike any other state. The Kuleana Coalition has chosen to support candidates who have expressed their commitment to uphold the Public Trust Doctrine and restore it as a guiding principle for setting county policy. The understandings codified by the Public Trust Doctrine have always been a part of Hawaiian culture. At the time of statehood the Hawaiian Elders

insisted that it be written into the Hawaii State Constitution to provide specific protection for the wellbeing of the land, air, fresh water and ocean. Our State Government is explicitly charged with protecting the purity of these resources for the benefit of future generations. The Public Trust Doctrine is a successful social policy, dating back to Roman times, to protect a community’s local natural resources from outside, even Royal, exploitation. In the late 1700’s, when resources in the United States truly appeared endless, The Doctrine must have seemed unnecessary, and abandoning it then did fuel the industrialization and growth of the U.S. into the global superpower it is today. However, as we have seen over the course of our lifetime, there are indeed limits to the exploitation our planet can absorb. The United States is today diminished by the rampage of exploitation that continues unchecked in so many communities, displacing people and ruining lives, all for the benefit of Wall Street and International, short-term corporate profits. Again, Maui County is extraordinary. Because of our small size, and the island’s complete inability to absorb unchecked exploitation, we have reached our limit sooner and more blatantly than anyplace else. And because our Hawaiian Leaders understood this day would come and insisted that the Public Trust Doctrine be included in the Hawaii State Constitution, we already have the mechanism of our salvation at hand, we need only the political will to enforce it. So what’s your job? Empower yourself by participating in our local elections. The general election is Tuesday November 8th. You can vote via early walk-in, mail-in or at the polls on election day.

Your other job is to contribute at least $100 to each of the candidate’s campaigns of your choice, because the state can match your $100 and double the value of your energy focused towards change. If you can afford the money and the public disclosure, your job is to contribute up to $2000 to each of the candidate’s campaigns of your choice. But if the public disclosure does not suit you, you can make a contribution of any size, with no limit, to the Kuleana Coalition for Change, where your name will not be publically disclosed. The Coalition is being directed by seasoned political professionals and is dedicated to supporting its chosen candidates on your behalf. Go to www.KuleanaCoalition.org. Maui has given us this perfect storm opportunity to make a difference. Your financial support and your participation will indeed have an extraordinary effect: Once we get just five of these candidates elected to the County Council, all of us together, will effectively begin to take Maui County back from exploitation.
‘Nuff Already! Contribute, vote, and share this message with your friends and family. Together we can restore balance to allow all our county residents to thrive, without destroying the precious gift that is Maui. Treasure Hunt Trash Beach
Being among the beach-cleaning volunteers at Kamilo, AKA “Trash Beach,” felt like taking part in a deeply meaningful treasure hunt.
by Krista Joan Donaldson After a moment of shocked silence to ingest the immensity of the job, vibes snapped back to the jovial spirit of a free rummage sale. The beach looked like a plastic bomb had detonated; billions of shards of multicolored shrapnel covering white sand and black rock. “I would love any action figures you find!,” called one young woman. “And I am collecting disposable utensils for my trash fashion show costume!” dibbed another. Some strong boys headed off to see who could recover the biggest, washed up mass. Kamilo is undeniably magnetic. Referring to native milo trees or twisting, swirling cur-rents, Kamilo was a place where people in the old days came to harvest massive logs that rolled onto shore. The shoreline is positioned as the first landing place for sea life in thousands of miles and an undisturbed habitat for plants and animals. Swelled by environmental disasters and pollution, billions of plastic fragments of every imaginable size and color collect offshore in the Great Pacific garbage patch, to end up swirling onto this beach. In the past decade or so, Kamilo has been attracting thousands of people to confront one of our Islands’ most daunting health and environmental threats—plastic marine debris. Removing over 186 tons of plastic pollution from Kamilo in just over a decade, Hawaii Wildlife Fund (HWF) spearheaded the massive undertaking. The inspiration came with the rumor of one mama monk seal that was reportedly birthing on the beach. The group’s co-founder, Bill Gilmartin had been directing monk seal rehabilitation
with Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Endangered Species Recovery Program. In 2001, Mr. Gilmartin (“kind of an intelligent, humble, monk seal guru,”) heard of a mother seal settling in at Kamilo - the first recorded pupping monk seal on Hawaii Island since becoming endangered. He started visiting Kamilo with his wife, and then bringing volunteers from marine science U of H, Hilo. As HWF VP, Megan Lamsen tells it, “These visitors began noticing piles and piles of marine debris. They also saw dozens and dozens of native plants, and how unique, rare, and amazing this coastline is and this stretch of ahupua’a in general is.” He spent years trying to figure out how to harness energy in the community to make the pilgrimage to Kamilo to do some clean-ups. With colleagues and friends feeling strapped and overwhelmed, two years later, he was awarded a state grant. “He came back down here with 75 volunteers. Two tractors and a flatbed later, they removed 100,000 pounds—so 50 tons—that first weekend.” The July 9th clean-up my crew attended was one HWF action in a year of events; spanning Big Island, Maui, and Oahu celebrating the group’s 20th birthday. After an hour 4WD ramble seeing no one but our six-vehicle caravan, we popped through a thick nau paka border to catch a first glimpse of the final resting place for tons of the world’s plastic discards. “This is ‘away,’” describes Megan. “I wish I could tell the world that there is no ‘away’ for plastic. The ocean is where so much of it ends up.” …continued on page 36

…continued from page 33 Marine debris is washing up on every Hawaiian Island. Members of Pulama Lana’i helped at Kamilo to learn different strategies so they could train clean-up volunteers on Lana’i and to compare debris found at home to other debris. Sifting through patches on the beach where “microplastics” made up 90% of the “sand,” was eye opening for the group, who noted that the fragments on Lana’i were larger and more fishing related. Other volunteers at Kamilo were concerned with the health impacts of tons and tons of toxic plastic floating in our oceans. One naturopathic doctor found an ancientlooking bottle that had dozens of little chunks bitten out of it. She said, “Fish eat the plastic, we eat the fish; not to mention the chemicals and hormones that are released into the water as these plastics break down.” Despite the carnage, hope always wins with HWF. The day’s work dealt up some scores. From a teen who discovered a perfect penny-bank in the shape of a teddy bear, to the
entire truckload of rainbow-colored ropes scooped up by local eco-artist Don El-wing, spirits left soaring. Our team of 41 volunteers ended up hauling out almost 2000 pounds of debris in just one day. “This is my tenth time coming to a Kamilo clean-up,” said Chuck, “and I am still amazed how much junk is on the beach and how much better it looks when we leave.” There are many ways you can help stop marine pollution! Pick up some debris next time you go to any beach. Participate in an organized beach clean-up like the one at Kamilo. The best thing you can do is make a pledge to stop using single use plastic. You can help celebrate with Hawaii Wildlife Fund in a series of events throughout the year. >>The next clean up at Kamilo is September 24<< Details and schedules available at

OAHU Licious Dishes + Greens & Vines
by Carlos Garcia
“ We are much more than just a restaurant serving food and drink. We make choices every day, which result in perpetuating our health and Mother Nature’s health by not using animal products.” –Sylvia Thompson I’m happy to say that Honolulu has been high on the list of vegan destinations on many web sites recently. There are many vegan restaurants and one that really stood out on my last visit to Oahu is also a raw food restaurant called Greens & Vines in Honolulu. There’s a powerful energy you feel with “Living, Whole-food, Plant Based meals”. The body recognizes each bite made of vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, so it is easily digested and energized. If we all ate like that, sickness would drop dramatically. Raw Vegan food has been scientifically proven many times over, that it’s so powerful it can actually cure you of disease. So it’s probably better to not get sick at all and live your life fully instead of having to heal your life away. A little history pre-Greens & Vines, on the way to Bermuda at a stop in New York, Sylvia Thompson and her husband Pete, dined at raw food restaurant, Pure Food and Wine. “That’s when the lights went on,” Thompson says. “Each bite was so vibrant, I didn’t even think—oh, it’s raw—and when the dessert came, I had to ask, if it was vegan?” Licious Dishes opened in May of 2007 doing Meal Plans, Grab N Go and Farmers’ Markets in a little shop at Dole Cannery as a certified kitchen with a small Grab N Go deli fridge near the door where SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER 2016

customers could pick up pre-packaged meals-to-go, and their Meal Plan orders on Fridays. Their food has always been totally Gluten-Free (no grains), Vegan (no animal products-100% whole-food, plant based), Non-GMO, and much of it is organic/ locally grown. It is truly “Raw”, uncooked and unprocessed. It’s as close to the land as you can get (i.e., whole foods). In 2011 after winning the Critic’s Choice Star Advertiser Ilima Awards, while serving up their food and blowing away everyone that tried it at the awards banquet, her husband Pete gave her the green light to start the raw vegan restaurant including wines. It took a year of the legal/construction process and finally opened on October 28, 2012. The restaurant became Greens and Vines and is at the corner of Ward Avenue and Kapiolani Boulevard in Honolulu. It’s been a hit with locals and tourists ever since. There is more demand now for Meal Plan services because many people live very busy lives and don’t have time to go out to restaurants, supermarkets or to even pick up meals to-go everyday. The packaged meals can be eaten at dinner time or taken to the office for lunch. Each week they offer six healthy, packaged, gourmet meals (see their website www.e-LiciousDishes.com for information and to order four rotating Meal Plans that are available at designated locations around Oahu.) Creativity reigns in meals like: Cauli-Thyme Mash, Miso Shallot Gravy – made of Cauliflower, Macadamia Nuts, Lemon Juice, Thyme, Garlic, Olive Oil. Basil Tomato Olive Spaghetti (Marinara, Zucchini “Noodles”,) side Spinach Salad with Red Onions, Olives, Mint. Middle Eastern Taco – Almond Falafels, Romaine Lettuce, Marinated Sweet Onions, Garlic Tahini Sauce, Non GMO corn tortillas.
And they’re all made from scratch in their certified kitchen.
You can also sample and purchase their food at these farmer’s markets: KCC, Saturday mornings, 7:30 to 11:00 KAILUA, Thursday afternoons, 5:00 to 7:30 KAKAAKO, Saturday mornings, 8:00 to 12:00 Queen’s Medical Center, First Wednesday, 9:00 to 1:30 “So many people keep asking us, when are you coming to our neighborhood? The time is now to spread our roots around the island”, says Sylvia. “If you’re interested in becoming a Meal drop-off point for locals in your neighborhood to pick up, please let us know”. 909 Kapiolani Bl., Unit B, Honolulu, HI 96814 • 808-536-9680 www.e-liciousdishes.com • www.GreensAndVines.com

It’s no secret that Hot Yoga is popular.
benefits of practicing
Hot Yoga by Patricia Carrera
From celebrities to athletes, everyone seems to enjoy and talk about the benefits of this practice. Here’s are some of the benefits you’ll get when you sign up for hot yoga class: Increased flexibility: the room is intentionally heated to warm your muscles and allow you to safely reach new levels of personal flexibility. I would consider this to be one of the greatest benefits of practicing Hot yoga. Being that one of the most common misconception that prevents people from coming to a yoga class is not being flexible enough. Over time your body will improve and you’ll gain the flexibility that you never thought you could have.
Cardiovascular: Practicing yoga in a heated room will increase your heart rate and you get a great cardiovascular workout. The heat allows your blood vessels to become more flexible which makes circulation easier and increases oxygen and nutrient flow throughout the whole body. Detox: The heat also stimulates detoxification of the body through sweating. As mentioned above, the heat improves circulation in the cardiovascular and the lymphatic system, which aids in the flushing out of toxins. Weight loss: Each posture combines flexibility, strength and balance to work your body from the inside out. With persistence, patience and dedication, you can lose inches of excess fat and develop muscle tone and strength that might never come from other forms of exercise. Practicing yoga draws bodily systems into harmony, regulates metabolism, and normalizes weight. Weight loss is one of the most popular side effects of practicing Hot yoga. Breath: Your Breath work is very important during a yoga practice, especially in a heated room. If there is no breathing, there is no yoga. It won’t take long before you learn to breathe in a full and controlled manner. Relaxation: Hot yoga goes above and beyond when it comes to relieving stress and building inner confidence. This practice is the true definition of “mind over the matter”. The endorphin rush you receive after completing a 60 or a 90 minute sweat session will leave you feeling like there’s nothing you can’t accomplish.
No matter what your level of fitness is, Hot yoga is for anyone and everyone who is willing to try. You will find Hot Yoga physically and mentally challenging, yet you’ll feel amazing after it and cannot wait to be back in the Hot Room. vegfest OAHU
September 24th, 2016 at Honolulu Hale — 1 to 6:30 pm
celebrate. learn. taste.
by Will C.
VegFest Oahu will be taking place on September 24 at the Honolulu Hale. This free family-friendly event, celebrating plant-based sustainable living, will run from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Local restaurants will offer delicious vegan food, and inspiring speakers will talk about health and environmental topics. There will even be a learning kitchen where expert chefs will demonstrate plant-based cooking. Shoppers will enjoy the Wellness Market with green and vegan-friendly products, and everyone will have a chance to delight in the music and entertainment. The beautiful grassy lawn of Honolulu Hale, on the corner of King and Punchbowl streets, offers abundant trees for shade, as will the event tents being set up for the festival. There is plenty of free parking in the underground lot. Local leaders in the vegan, sustainability and artistic communities make up the volunteer core team organizing the event. Their mission is to give the public a fun-filled opportunity to learn about the many benefits of choosing vegan foods and
lifestyle choices to improve health, contribute to solutions for climate change and encourage compassion for animal welfare. One of the performers on the Main Stage will be muchbeloved local musician Paul Izak, founder of Yogarden Hawaii, singing his songs of peace and green living. For the Inspiration Speaker Series, they’ve just confirmed Michael Kramer, author and financial advisor at Natural Investments specializing in sustainable and socially responsible investing. In our Learning Kitchen you will get to see cooking demos from expert chefs Sylvia Thompson, from Greens and Vines Restaurant and Down To Earth’s very own deli Manager Edgar Edge. The program is being expanded more and more every day as people learn of VegFest and ask to be a part of this event. Join the VegFest Oahu mailing list to keep up with the festivities as they unfold. Joy Waters, VegFest Oahu producer, explains why the time is right to hold Oahu’s first VegFest: “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
recently ranked Honolulu as the seventh in the country in their list of vegan-friendly cities. This represents the broader interest that people in Hawai’i have in plant-based products and services. We represent that growing demographic. VegFests have been happening all over the world for years, and now the time is right to bring it to Hawai’i. We want to nurture an engaged community that supports plant-based living as part of our local culture.” VegFest Oahu is bringing together Oahu’s major players in the vegan, vegetarian, health, sustainability and animal rights movements to celebrate, collaborate and learn from each other.
Will C., is a wild monkey that lives in the jungle of New York City and comes to Maui every 2 to 3 months. He comes to eat as much vegan and raw food as possible and has set the Guinness Book of World Records for eating 369 bananas in one sitting. (Not really but makes good effort).

vegan Aloha
Options to the Destructive Meat and Dairy Industries
by Miri Chamdi
“Be the change that you want to see in the world,” said Mahatma Gandhi several decades ago.
I hear this quote in its various versions. “Lead by example, embody the change, put your energy toward the good instead of bashing the bad,” are all wonderful words of advice. I try, with all my heart to fulfill these catchy phrases, yet at times I fail. Why? Because there are some
planetary issues which require a little more attention, a little more assertive conviction and yes, a little more uncomfortable encounters. Yet, as time goes by, it is becoming easier and easier to advocate for a vegan lifestyle change. There is a collective movement, an awakening, as more people understand the ethical, environmental and health issues which accompany the consumption of animal products. And there are those who go the extra mile to make sure that people will have access to wonderful products and projects which makes going vegan a sweet walk in the park. 44

SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER 2016
Only a decade ago, going vegan was considered a move of a martyr. It seemed as if even the word vegan was out of space, something extreme and very difficult to be. If your palate craved a little more than grains, legumes, veggies, nuts and fruit, you would have to pay a fortune for alternatives to animal products. Mock meat and mock cheese were “plastic food”, marginal in nutritional values and tasted like cardboard sprinkled with spices. They didn’t quite satisfy the addiction to meat and cheese, and yes, they are addictive. Literally. Take cheese for example. It is placed in almost everything we eat. Salads with cheese, a cheese quesadilla, cheese sandwich, cheese with wine, cheese with crackers, everything is cheese, cheese, cheese! Why are we so addicted to something which was originally designed to make a baby cow, goat or sheep double its weight within a short period of time? Opiods are the key factors to that addiction. Mother’s milk of human, cow, sheep and goat (among others) contains opiods which release endorphins, the good feeling hormones, in order for the young to stay close to its mother, to suckle a lot of milk and grow fast. We might be the only species who consume mother’s milk as adults. And not our own mother’s milk, or a night nurse’s milk, but the mother’s milk of a different biological species. When we consume other species’ mother’s milk as adults, the same opiods go to work, making us sleepy, lethargic, inflamed and addicted. The dairy industry knows this. It keeps us addicted so we will continue, on a regular basis,
to consume their products which fatten both us and their bank account. Yes. Cheese is delicious and comes in abundant forms. It is also usually the hardest to give up when one understands the ethical, environmental and health issues involved with its consumption. The good news is that it is now easier than ever to break this destructive and unnecessary addiction. The first step is to understand the dire consequences the consumption of dairy results in. The second step is to take responsibility for our consumption habits. The third
step, is to enjoy eating and to satisfy our palate with food which was prepared with the minimum amount of cruelty, ecological impact and health impact. I write these words as I lick my lips of the baked feta cheese made entirely from nuts which I made last night. It is creamy, with just the perfect texture and the perfect amount of salt. I just happened to come across this great recipe on the web. And the web is abundant with plant based recipes brought to you by people who have passion, creativity and care just enough so you too could enjoy and thrive on a vegan diet. Anything you want to make with animal products you could make with plant based alternatives. When you search the web all you have to do is write the word “vegan” after what it is you want to make and impress your friends and family with. If you are not the type of person who likes to be in the kitchen, don’t despair. There are wonderful people who understand your busy schedule or your aversion to the kitchen environment and make these products for you. Cheese, yogurt and milk in abundant versions, simple or gourmet, with or without gluten, organic, non organic, non GMO and my all time favorite, “probiotic.” Are you more of a meat lover? Is it hard for you to give up meat but you understand the ethical, environmental and health issues involved with its consumption? No worries! There are people who think like you as well! Sure, there are those plant based products which are getting more and more sophisticated, healthy and widely available which could satisfy your love for meat. But if you are a hard core meat lover, one which simply cannot trade off the flesh of an animal for the plant based version, there is
a solution for you as well. Or more precisely put, a solution is on its way. It is called “super meat” or “in vitro meat.” It is meat in every aspect; texture, flavor, blood and all! Only instead of raising billions of animals, deforesting the rain forests, gobbling an insane amount of water, land and other resources, putting up with the dangerous amount of methane gas farm animals emit, it is meat which is grown in a lab from a real animal’s stem cells. Before you put down this article with disgust, open your mind and contemplate this for a moment with me. If you could eat real meat which tastes exactly the same as the one you so love and cherish, only it does not have the hormones, antibiotics, food coloring and other harmful chemicals, heart disease causing triglycerides and stress hormones such as cortisol which animals are flooded with before slaughter and which surely affects our bodies in one way or another, wouldn’t you? Oh, it will also be cheaper and available in stores everywhere in a short period of time. Why? Because it is becoming impossible to sustain our love for meat and other animal products as long as we don’t have another planet to spare. And, well, we don’t. Take your time, sit with this revolutionary thought. Food makers understand where the wind is blowing. They understand the power we, as consumers hold. If we don’t buy, they don’t make and will make what we will buy. As the vegan lifestyle is becoming mainstream, more and more creative food is being made and developed. Show these companies the power of your dollar. Put it where there is least harm and destruction. Then sit back, sip a smoothie and watch the speed in which they create responsible, delicious and creative food for you. Here is another obstacle which is becoming easier to overcome. Remember when you were a child and your parents or guardian took you to the farm to see animals such as cows, sheep, pigs and chickens? Most likely those animals would later become someone’s dinner,
but you didn’t think of that then. Because your parents or guardian never took you to a slaughterhouse to show you how your burger or chicken McNuggets were made. For some reason they skipped this step. They might have taken you to an apple or an orange orchard to show you SEPTEMBER–OCTOBER 2016

how apple sauce and orange juice are made, but never to a slaughterhouse. No. You were so happy petting these animals, laughing when they behaved funny, wiped off the sticky saliva with your sleeve when one of them got close enough with trust and showed some affection. Those little yellow chicks were so cute and you wanted to take one home with you! Later in life, some of you made the connection that beef is a cow, pork is a pig, venison is deer and so on. You might have felt betrayed or appalled. You might have turned away from animal products and got on the vegan wagon. Or you might have felt better never thinking again how and from whom your food is made. Yet, every time you see a cow or a pig in organized farms or simply grazing grass in a fenced up pasture, there is a nudging thought which, with all your might you want to put away. When and how will this animal get slaughtered? The great news is that you may now take your children to sanctuary farms which rescue these animals from the animal holocaust, love and care for them and make it possible for you to bring your children and experience the joy of being with animals without having to think when these animals are going to be stripped from their right to live. Wonderful people who dedicate their lives to saving and caring for animals are making it possible for you to instill compassion in

Miyoko Schinner of Miyoko’s Kitchen with Laurelee Blanchard of Leilani Farm Sanctuary on Maui
Special thanks goes to Miyoko Shinner of Miyoko’s Kitchen for spending many years of her life creating products that alleviate the need for animals products. Cheese is the most common animal product people find hard to give up. Her various flavors of artisan vegan “cheeses” have changed the face of the dairy industry. Companies like hers are helping reduce the destruction of the planet, making people healthier and reducing the suffering of millions of animals with their dairy alternatives. Her European Style Cultured VeganButter really had me fooled when I first tried it at the 2016 Natural Products Expo. It’s the only butter alternative made without palm oil. It’s a little scary now much it tastes like dairy butter. Miyoko’s Kitchen Mt. Vesuvius Black Ash is the FIRST vegan cheese product to win a Sofi. Sofi Awards are like the Oscars of Specialty Food. With over 3,000 entries, winners are chosen by a national panel of culinary experts in a blind taste test. Winners represent the best of what Specialty Food has to offer.
