Daphne Ewing-Chow I have been engaged in the writing business for the past two decades. The opportunity to work in beautiful spaces is the dream of any artist, so the two days that I spent at Godings Beach House, writing, being inspired by the ocean and interacting with Mr. Nixon and his team were nothing short of idyllic. I am so grateful for their hospitality.
Gina Francesca Gina is a Barbados photographer specialising in Love, Maternity and Family photography. Her work has been featured in both local and international magazines including the prestigious British Vogue 2017. Gina loves to capture natural moments as they unfold and prides herself on creating images to be treasured for a lifetime. When she’s not behind the camera, you can find her with her greatest of joys: her three children. Follow Gina on Instagram @ginafrancesca photography or email her at gina@ginafrancescaonline.com.
Junior Morgan The visionary behind The Morgan Media, Junior is one of the leading photographers in Barbados. He is widely sought after by some of the Caribbean’s leading brands, personalities, publications and corporate players who rely on his keen eye and creative direction for fresh, bold images. His work can be seen on page 70 where he photographed images for Suga Apple Swimwear.
Carlie Ester Carlie came of age ferociously scribbling through blank notebooks and precociously defying authority. These days she’d rather read the thesaurus than advocate chaos, and probably spends too much of her time running in circles. Carlie purports herself to be an athlete, radio announcer and professional writer - read on and you may find evidence to support at least one of these claims.

eated at the whetstone table overlooking the bougainvillea-framed ocean front, it is easy to find inspiration in the natural beauty of Godings Beach House - the fishing boats putt-putting in the distance, the glistening ocean and the palm trees that mischievously dance to the vibration of the wind. The natural tranquility of the garden setting is symmetrically enhanced by two gazebos, holding hands with the mosaiclined pool - all within feet from the white sand beach. It is impossible not to become transfixed by the tranquility. Godings Beach House is not just another luxury villa dotting along Barbados’ Platinum coast. Godings is a lifestyle correction - a retreat from fast paced living and an opportunity to reconnect with nature and simplicity while immersed in the highest standard of luxury and amenities. Every element of this luxury experience is a testament to the discerning taste, personality and spirit of its owner, Mr. Simon Nixon.

Just as with the rest of the house, the bedrooms are very simple and soothing, each with its own private terrace and en suite bathroom. In order to preserve this type of ambience, the interior designer intentionally excluded televisions, opting instead for a cutting-edge cinema room.

Mr. Nixon’s approach is distinctive, in that each of his properties is his personal vacation home at one of his favorite escapes. Godings Beach House is infused with a certain je ne sais quoi - that essence that is unique to its owner. From its close proximity to water which is reminiscent of the getaways that he would take to the seaside as a child, to its openness and minimalism, which speaks to his distaste for enclosed hotel-like accommodations - Godings provides the experience of what it is like to vacation like a billionaire. “Our guests know that they will always get a certain standard when they stay at one of our properties. They are in the best locations and are of the highest aesthetic standards while being authentic to their setting,” says the owner, who selected Altman Villa Rentals as the representatives for Godings Beach House and has been extremely satisfied with the support that he has been receiving from their team of experts. “I have played a part in the villa development for 35 years.
The setting sun illuminating the stunning architecture of Godings.
Relax and refresh in the master bedroom’s en-suite bath tub.
Godings Beach House is simply magnificent” remarked Sir Paul Altman, Managing Director of Altman Real Estate & Villa Rentals. This luxury villa is located on one of the most breathtaking beaches on the North-West coast of Barbados; the five bedroom house sits on over an acre of pure serenity. The open plan of the house, which features glass walls and doors where ever possible, capitalises on the natural beauty of the beachfront setting. “Godings Beach House has captured the ‘Barbados Style’ and has taken beach living to its ultimate level” said Sir Paul. Walking through the vast doorway at the main entrance of the house is an awe-inspiring experience - the luxurious simplicity of the living area impeccably frames the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea - the glass doors and unadulterated view of the beach make the ocean appear to be a natural extension of the house itself. The rich colors of the Caribbean are striking accessories, providing a pop to
the minimalistic elegance found within. Although there are no private beaches in Barbados, the serene oceanfront at Godings Beach House is enclosed by a natural cove that provides a private beach type of setting. In short, it is picture perfect. Architect, Douglas Luke and Interior Designer, Jill Stein took great care to preserve the owner’s taste and signature style, from the use of organic wood in every room, to the extensive use of limestone on the floors and walls, providing a clean, yet very Bajan aesthetic. The gentle greys, creams and browns are delicately highlighted by the bright colors of the garden, tropical wall art, Ann Sacks Mediterranean-style mosaics that adorn each of the bathrooms and accent pieces, such as the handmade Peter Milne ping pong table on the terrace. The entire 13,500 square foot house from the bedrooms, to the home office, to the living and dining areas and kitchen face the poolside and oceanfront garden. Given the location, the breeze consistently flows

through, causing the Verpan seashell chandelier over the staircase to sing a peaceful wind chime-like song, adding to the peaceful ambience. Just as with the rest of the house, the bedrooms are very simple and soothing, each with its own private terrace and en suite bathroom. In order to preserve this type of ambience, the interior designer intentionally excluded televisions, opting instead for a cutting-edge cinema room. “If you want to watch movies, we provide the cinematic experience in the cinema room, and a television in the kitchen. I do not believe that there should be televisions in the bedrooms,” says the owner unapologetically. “The bedroom should be a place of serenity. It should be for reading, private time and sleeping. “Yes indeed,” agrees a regular visitor to the house. “Sitting out on the terrace is like watching a movie in itself. With the comings and goings of the boats every fifteen minutes, the scene constantly changes.” Aesthetics aside, what makes Godings an extremely intriguing and exclusive luxury product is its unique lifestyle approach. The owner is passionate about wellness and encourages his guests to indulge themselves in a healthy vacation, should they wish to, while providing them with all of the resources to do so. Godings Beach House has a network of yoga instructors and therapists who offer alternative therapies, as well as a private chef who will make and suggest dishes from various cutting edge and healthy recipe books and websites such as Deliciously

The property features a well-stocked gym and is located close to golf, tennis courts and offers a plethora of watersports opportunities on its very own oceanfront. Guests can also partake in some of the more unique opportunities for exercise offered by the property’s idyllic location. “I love to take a paddle board from Godings and make my way over to Mullins and have lunch and then paddle back home. I also love to wake up in the morning and swim over to the platform in the water which is about 150 metres out and then swim back in and have breakfast that the chef would have prepared for me while I was out,” gushes the owner. When asked to describe his home in three words, Mr. Nixon responds with “luxurious, contemporary and wow.” The words sanctuary and Bajan should be added to this list. Godings Beach House marries the highest standards of luxury and wellness with the beauty, serenity and authenticity of its Barbadian setting. Perhaps this is most fittingly encapsulated by a recent visitor to the property. “I come here when I’m really tired and I’ve been eating in hotels, rushing around in business meetings. Godings helps me revert from all of the bad stuff I’ve been doing.”

By Malissa Blackman, Weddings by Malissa Photos by Gina Francesca shot on location at Sweetfield Manor, Brittons Hill.
It does not matter how many years I have been planning and designing gorgeous weddings, after 13 years, I still get excited about designing photo shoots, because it can really show everyone what my team and I can do. Sweetfield Manor was the perfect venue for this shoot, with all of the lush green gardens and the bright bougainvillea colours everywhere and, with the most beautiful pool. It truly was an oasis! The entrance to the main house at Sweetfield Manor, mirrored our Bajan chattel house designs with pineapple ornaments. So we knew this design had to be a tropical design with lots of bright authentic Caribbean colours, such as, bright orange, purple, pinks, yellows and lots of natural local greenery from the island, whilst incorporating pineapples to tie back with the setting at Sweetfield Manor. Over the years our team has been bestowed many awards, most recently, Luxury Travel Guide for Wedding Planner of the year 2016, of which we are very proud and is a true testament to our team’s dedication that we give each of our clients. Malissa can be contacted on 262-1450 or by emailing malissa@barbadosweddings.net • www.barbadosweddings.net

Creating a romantic and intimate Barbadian wedding experience was the inspiration for our beach themed nuptials. A harmonious design complimented by the surrounding lush tropical foliage, rustic beach elements and ombre blue tones of the ocean that are all found at this stunning location. Tropical, locally grown flowers, soft foliage and beach elements such as starfish and shells were used to this effect and cocktails utilising our local Barbadian rum served in handpicked refreshing coconuts were chosen to celebrate the union. A custom made distressed tabletop was created for the dining experience and I teamed up with the renowned designers at Jenny Blanc Interiors and Utopia who both offer Bridal Registry services. Coconut Chilli Shrimp with Mango Pickle and a Cucumber Salsa was selected by Chef Scott Ames of Scott’s Catering to compliment the theme. When planning a beach wedding, select your attire and hairstyle with the beach in mind, advise your guests accordingly and ‘ditch the heels’ – there’s nothing like having your toes in the soft Caribbean sand. Twenty-five years in the industry has taught me the importance of planning, designing and executing a wedding that reflects each couple’s personalities, dreams and aspirations. Most people are familiar with longer term mortgages - 25, 30 and even 35 year mortgages where they can spread their payments over a longer period so they can enjoy more of their disposable income or save or invest. However, some persons love the idea of forced discipline and of achieving financial liberty in a shorter time frame.

A JOURNEY TO DESIGN With design in her blood, Sophie’s round-a-bout journey led to her ultimate design destination. By Rachel Ramphal
Photos by Sofie Warren
ophie Domenge has been quietly transforming home décor for select clients in Barbados for the last 4 years. What started off as a chance opportunity opened the doors on her second dream career. Born in Barbados in 1973 Sophie lived an idyllic childhood by its beachy shores until the age of ten when she was sent to a traditional English girl’s boarding school. For Sophie this was both a wonderful and a trying experience. “I’ll never forget my Mother saying – ‘You are going to school by the sea’ then seeing the grey, dark choppy shores and pebble beaches of the South of England and thinking – This is not the sea I know. I can laugh about it now of course and it has shaped who I am today profoundly” explains Sophie. After boarding school Sophie expressed her desire to study design, however, at the time, her father (renowned architect Ian Morrison) did not believe this would be applicable living in Barbados and so instead the obvious choice was Hotel and Restaurant Management at University. This was followed by ten years working in and running restaurants in London’s West End. “I developed a good business sense working for a PLC in the UK, and I still managed to express my creativity through food and restaurant design.” says Sophie.

Redecorating the seaside apartment at Little Good Harbour hotel
It was during this period that she met her French mixologist and chef husband Stephane. Sophie had already made her mind up to come back to the same beachy shores in Barbados after seeing a gap in the mid-market restaurant scene on the West Coast. In 2006 Sophie and Stephane opened Scarlet, an all enclosed air-conditioned restaurant with a bistro menu. They were told it would never work in Barbados but they took on the challenge and, as she explained, “I like to push the norms and think outside the box”. The rest is history as Scarlet, (despite the naysayers) has seen great success with its hip décor, innovative menu and trend setting cocktails - they are currently scouting a location for a second restaurant. Sophie continued to dream about a career in design until one day the planets aligned and a friend of hers suggested that she redo an apartment for her Mother in Port St. Charles - the catch? There was very little budget. Sophie worked her magic and voila, upon completion the apartment sold. After this the ball just kept rolling, with word of mouth bringing one job after another. Sophie had applied to The Kensington and Chelsea School of Design but by now she had already grasped the knowledge of the course work ‘on the job’. Outdoor shower at Little Good Harbour hotel

“Style and taste cannot be taught. It may vary from person to person but irrevocably you have to have it in your DNA,” says Sophie. “I am blessed with some good design genes from both parents,” she laughs. “I would like to think that my designs are timeless, easy, slightly rustic and perhaps a touch of French country. I do however, love the clean lines of modern design and do believe very much that less is more,” says Sophie. When clients approached her about re-decorating their apartment in Port St Charles, Sophie was excited at the opportunity to work in a space designed by her father. The clients wanted a timeless and easy beach space and one that could stand up to the wear and tear of a holiday rental property. The sofa was covered in a Sunbrella fabric, the dining room furniture was painted white with the chair cushion covers made out of bright pink Turkish hammam towels, “they wash beautifully and make a great seat for a beach-side apartment!” Pops of soft purple in one bedroom and orange in another give each room character while a small hanging bed in the upstairs office space is perfect for that extra guest or just to lounge. ‘This is where I started my ‘two tone’ furniture, I love this look, I’ve used it a lot since and it is very impactful.” Up cycling is very important to Sophie. “We live in a throw away culture now... If I can reduce that as well as incorporating local crafts people it is doubly satisfying and a win-win for everyone.” On one of her jobs she re-purposed an old cast iron pot turning it into a vanity top sink, while a run of the mill old oak chest was transformed into the vanity. An antique furniture cabinet was stripped and painted and, with mirrors inserted, it became beautifully functional as decorative storage for the client’s bags and purses. Sophie also loves to marry functionality and practicality, “when you can bring these two things together then you’ve nailed it!”

A complete transformation of a seaside apartment at Little Good Harbour hotel brought about a simple, pared down beach-y vibe, again using many up cycled elements; a pickled wood ceiling was removed and re-purposed into window sills, artwork pieces and frames for mirrors. Tree trunks from Sophie’s garden became side tables and a beautiful sofa was made with a modern nod to rattan caning. A locally made mahogany dressing table was painted to give a softer feel while pops of blue throughout mimic the blue of the sea lapping just outside the window. Sophie worked very closely with another one of her clients and brought a rustic and natural look to a refurbished cottage in the grounds of a Plantation house. Plaster was removed to expose the coral stone and the ends of the ceiling beams, a coffee table was made out of the original window frames while old pine boards were used as kitchen shelves. Sourced factory iron pieces were set into the walls and used to hang lights while a local metal work company made the curtain rods and large door hinges. Sophie’s mood boards are often more conceptual than literal and to this end her ideal clients are those who trust her vision implicitly. “No two jobs are ever the same and a great rapport with the client is essential to the process and creative momentum. It doesn’t always end exactly the same as planned as sometimes better options present themselves.” Although Sophie’s study time abroad took her heart across the ocean away from her island-home, sometimes you have to travel out of your way to find the path back home which ends in a place of self-fulfillment.

Sophie’s decorating tips: 1. Paint is the number one transformative application. 2. Use local crafts persons who are willing to work with your design.
3. Pick one object that has sentimental value or that you love, and use as an inspiration piece or jumping off point. A piece of art or objet d’art is good. 4. You can soften the look of mahogany furniture by using a medium-tone grey paint, not white. Use this watered down before brushing on, then remove some if necessary with a wet sponge. 5. Don’t be afraid to re-use and re-purpose old or found items, this will add character to your space. The photo on the right shows an old door, sanded down and used as a coffee table.

Palms to ParAkeets By Sue Thomas-Richardson, Jenny Blanc’s Design Director
The tropical trend is happening all over the world both in Interiors and fashion. You only have to browse the lifestyle and clothing stores to see a glorious display of hot vibrant colours patterned with tropical themes; monkeys, turtles, fish, parrots, flamingos, orchids, hibiscus, shells and corals. What could be more exciting than planning the Interior decoration of your own holiday home in the Caribbean with Jenny Blanc, a company inspired by your dreams and visions of stepping into your tropical paradise, surrounded by the vibrance of sunset yellows and oranges, mystical ocean blues, breezy palm tree greens, sleepy sandy creams and dreamy driftwood greys! The selection of outdoor fabrics has multiplied tenfold in the last decade and one of the most popular requests we get when designing homes in the Caribbean is “splashes of colour without being OTT.” Whilst we still have to consider exposure to heat, salt, moisture, suntan lotions and rum punch when putting together fabric schemes for our Caribbean projects, ensuring that the fabrics being proposed are durable to all of these elements; we are now far less restricted with choice. The major fabric houses keep plying our Design studio in London with new collections for outdoor use featuring an abundance of exotic tropical themes and colours, cool and fresh or hot and exciting. Our challenge as designers is to keep the excitement under control and temper the imagination of our clients, knowing that there should be a limit to the boldness, we often have to calm things down with the neutrals. In the tropics, it is essential to have curtains for privacy at night especially in bedrooms and to block out the mid-afternoon sun, we recommend simple designs for curtains as it is always preferable for a room to feel spacious and calm with subtle prints or beautiful sheers. Window blinds are very practical, cost effective and easy to use, especially in bathrooms and can be a little more decorative with a fun print. Powder rooms are so often the perfect room for creating a talking point! An alternative to using fabrics for your blinds, would be the fabulous selection of natural fibres that we love to use, they create a very tropical effect and are especially good for more contemporary designs. Upholstering headboards and making bespoke bed runners or spreads with a lovely weave or print can be so effective and adds another opportunity to build on a lovely fabric scheme in your bedroom. Throw cushions are a must in bedrooms or living areas; apart from contributing to comfort, they provide the opportunity to introduce that splash of colour. They also provide the perfect opportunity to use many of the beautiful trims available for that special finishing touch such as delicate shells or glass beads. Brush and corded trims are now also available for outdoor use in a fabulous selection of colours. Traditional, transitional or completely contemporary, there is a wonderful selection of prints, weaves and textures suitable for upholstery in tropical climates; in fact no longer are these fabrics hard and canvas like. With the incredible progress in the development of manmade textiles, it is hard to believe that the present day outdoor fabrics are purely acrylic as they are soft to the touch and comfortable to sit on though extremely durable, washable and resistant to the powerful UV rays, holding on to the colours for several years which was unheard of a decade ago. Whether you need to replace some cushions, re-cover a sofa, or refresh a whole room, the friendly team in our Sunset Crest showroom are happy to help you. Alternatively you can visit us in our UK Showroom where we have a larger selection of fabrics as well as our Design Studio which is the headquarters for our Interior Design projects for both the UK and the Caribbean.

Suga Apple Swim is fronted by badass designer Kim Angoy. She’s one multifarious mother, showing fearless entrepreneurship and creativity by dropping her bombshell swimwear designs that have her “Babes” swimming in body-positivity.

By Carlie Ester Photos by Junior Morgan . noop Suga Apple Swim’s instagram and you’ll see tons of what, at first glance, may appear to be cheeky girls baring their best bits in sexy swimwear. Peek closer, and you’ll see what these women really are: a bevy of confident beauties, mothers, athletes, career professionals, and of course, fashion models. But what separates this grid of madonnas is that they represent feminine power at its pinnacle. They are women in all sizes, shapes and shades, and they’re all Babes. It’s all contrived by designer and founder of Suga Apple Swim, Kim Angoy. As a mother of two boys, Kim understands the complicated and glorious process of pregnancy, childbirth and the leftover attributes like stretch marks and sags. She says, “I understood what a woman’s body went through and how to tackle a lot of issues.” Her swimsuit cuts are fresh, new, innovative and basically throw a middle finger to the polarizing notion that a woman has to reveal it all in a teeny bikini or reveal nothing at all in a boring whole piece. “I think I have been able to give young mums more confidence where having sexy swimwear is available, while covering up what we don’t want the public to see.” Suga Apple Swimwear essentially covers here, and lets you flaunt there, hides this, and reveals that. The pieces are made with patterns that flow like liquid dynamite, they come in flowery tropical prints to luscious velvet to lustrous snakeskin, with texture like netting or frills blended over, under and in between. Kim has invented swimwear that comes with invisible armour; when you put it on, you’re magically empowered. Models photographed at St. Helena, a luxurious villa in Old Queens Fort, Barbados. Inside the Suga Apple Swim store in Worthing, Christ Church, the space is small but proportionate, it denotes busy-ness as Kim’s mobile rings off the hook, yet it is calming and personal, with other locally made products available. Many of the designs are actually reversible, as Kim wants to give extra quality and value to her Babes. And most importantly, there is almost an incredulous degree of uniqueness to the variety of swimmies on the rack. Kim promises “Every week, new stuff comes in to the store. I run small batches so that my customers have exclusivity!” You certainly can’t get more exclusive than having your swimsuit worn by Rihanna. A fashion vanguard herself, Rihanna was photographed wearing one of Kim’s styles, the ‘X Me Sexy’ swimsuit. For Kim, it wasn’t just that Rihanna loved her swimwear, but that the reaction from her fellow Barbadians was an overwhelming swell of pride followed by a wave of messages, posts, likes, shares and congratulations. In a touching statement that allows her to lower her guard for a minute, Kim says “What was more humbling than her wearing it, was the support of Bajans to say how proud they were of me.”

Support, she goes on, also comes from her tightly knit family. Of course it’s difficult to juggle entrepreneurship and parenthood, she admits. “From my husband, parents, brothers, cousins, friends, everyone pitches in to help. When I have to travel or have stuff happening in Barbados, there’s always one of them to help watch the kids. I can’t give them enough thanks.” Much like Rihanna wearing one of her swimsuits gave her publicity she just couldn’t buy, this type of unconditional support is the kinda stuff entrepreneurs just can’t factor into a budget. “That’s priceless, a lot of people don’t have that.” She admits. The importance Kim places on family life comes from her parents, and she has a clear admiration for her dad. “My dad came from very little and he has managed to provide for us extraordinarily. I’ve always known my dad as a hardworking person… he would always be ready to serve customers.” Since the age of 7 she helped her dad out in the family business, and credits much of her acumen to the fact she was able to observe business from the bottom up. She also credits her father for showing her what it means to selflessly help the less fortunate. While Kim has had to put herself out there to forge her own path to success, her definition of the term is very clear: “Success is being able to make a life out of what I’m doing. Being able to guide others that may not have had the guidance. And to impact someone’s life in a positive way that they may better themselves.” For the future success of her two boys, her simple hope is that they create, and “that they understand that you don’t have to be put in a box.” With all the confidence of a Suga Apple Babe, she’s adamant that “there’re so many things out there you can do with your hands. I would love for my boys to get into building.”

Though she’s probably one of the main reasons her gym stays open (by miracle she squishes an hour into her schedule to get there almost every single day without fail, and I’m willing to bet she answers work emails in between sets), I can tell that the time that’s most precious to her are her Friday night picnics with her family, and Sunday fun days on the beach. With Suga Apple Swim, Kim has already mastered the art of swimmies and now, she’s working on her fledgling fit wear which is also starting to make its own mark. Not surprising, given how passionate she is about living a healthy lifestyle-no matter what size that may be. She says confidently, “We don’t only cater to skinny people. There’s a XXL here right now.” She points to the growing piles of local and international orders to be sent out to her Babes. International orders make up about half of her business right now, but with a festive summer season approaching, I think local purchases are about to reclaim a chunk of those sales. Left: Vanessa is wearing ‘Fiona’ a reversible whole piece. Below: Keylah of Gadal Model Management Inc is wearing ‘Krissy’ in a gold metallic print.
Being a Suga Apple Babe, in Kim’s own words, is “to be confident in your swimwear, your skin no matter what your size is. To be beautifully you.” She walks in our shoes every day and arms young mothers with a new surge of selfie-esteem, the kind that appears all over her Instagram account. If her personality, her definition of success and her story have set any kind of example for her 12.1k followers, it’s to be beautifully you-inside and out. hen the management of the Limegrove Lifestyle Centre asked John Chandler just before last Christmas if he would be interested in opening an antique shop, the answer was a resounding “Yes!” “They didn’t have to ask me twice,” he says. “Having an antiques store has been a lifelong dream for me, and their timing was perfect because I had been thinking seriously over the past year about setting it up at my home at Lancaster Great House.” Within 10 days, the signage on the front window – in large gold lettering – proclaimed that John Chandler Antiques and Flowers was open for business. Inside, John has filled the store not only with items from his own collection, but also items carried on consignment. It is an impressive inventory of superbly crafted furniture, gleaming silver and beautifully painted china ware, much of which once graced some of the grandest of the island’s great houses, including Sam Lord’s Castle and Farley Hill. There are old maps and other collectibles as well; and of course, exquisite, gleaming crystal chandeliers that John admits are his addiction. “I can’t resist chandeliers, I have to have them wherever I live,” he says. “I have been buying them and fixing them up for years. But the problem is I can’t bear to part with them, which isn’t such a good thing when you are in the antiques business.” John says he was drawn to antiques from the time he was a teenager, but the understanding of what he was seeing, along with the passion, bloomed and took root during his 25-year long association with the Ocean View Hotel, first as a young manager and then as proprietor. The hotel, in operation on the island’s south coast since 1898 but now sadly demolished, was owned at the time by well-known hotelier and bon-vivant, Victor Marson. “Victor had impeccable taste,” says John. “The Ocean View was filled with fine antiques. More than anyone, he opened my eyes to antiques; not just the monetary value, but also the craftsmanship.” Bronze plated bust of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. When John sold the Ocean View in 1996, he moved to Fisherpond Great House in the parish of St Thomas and took his stock of antiques with him. His plan, at the time, was to open the house and gardens for tours. (Gardens are another of John’s passions, as is floral arranging.) However, fate stepped in when he met and married his wife, Rain, a member of a highly successful family of hoteliers and resort owners in St Lucia. The simple vision of house and garden tours was soon transformed into something more. Over the next 15 years Fisherpond Great House would become famous not only for its Sunday buffet lunch, but as a popular location for small weddings and other private functions. “Rain has amazing organizational abilities,” says John. “I could never have done it on my own, and I still panic every time she takes a break and I’m left in charge.” John’s collection of antiques continued to grow as he and Rain outfitted the house with furniture, china, silver and glass-ware that were in keeping with the ambiance of an old plantation house. They have since moved their operation to Lancaster Great House, another spectacular old plantation house and showcase for John’s antiques, and their loyal customers have followed them. Finding these items meant scouring auction sales on a regular basis, especially estate auctions where items may have been in a family for decades. “Over the years I picked up some of the most beautiful old china – Mason’s Ironstone, Minton, and Royal Crown Derby – and at ridiculously low prices,” says John. John attributes the low prices to a negative attitude that many Bajans held for years towards what they perceived as second-hand goods. “They wanted to buy things that were new from a department store. But now they are realising how well-made this ‘old stuff’ is and how rare it has become. These days, the pool of antiques in Barbados is a very small one. Even good reproductions are hard to come by because all of the superb cabinetmakers and joiners we once had are gone.” “Customers seem to love the quirkiness of the antiques I have in store,” says John. “I have to keep reminding them that everything they sit on and look at is for sale.”
Early Dutch Colonial Swivel Bronzed Cannon dates back to the 1600’s and is “the oldest antique in the shop” says John. It was first brought to Barbados in 1901.

rive through the countryside of Barbados on any Saturday afternoon, rain or shine…stroll any beach in Barbados on any Sunday afternoon, rain or shine…and you will find an energetic, boisterous and exciting game of cricket in play. As the national sport of Barbados, cricket is what courses through the veins of Barbadians, it is their lifeline…it is ingrained in their psyche and rooted in their soul… Barbados has given birth to some of cricket’s most notable legends: Sir Garfield Sobers, Desmond Haynes, Gordon Greenidge, Joel “Big Bird” Garner, Malcolm Marshall, Wes Hall…just to name a few. It is therefore no surprise that Barbados continues to give rise to cricket magnificence boasting current local stars: Hayley Matthews, Shaquanna Quintyne, Kraigg Brathwaite, Kemar Roach, Shai Hope and Roston Chase who are all currently playing for the West Indies’ cricket teams and graduates of the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Program. Hayley plays international cricket for the West Indies Women’s Cricket Team and speaks fondly of her introduction to cricket: “Playing international cricket was a childhood dream. I insisted on joining my dad and brothers when they played in the yard. Dad noticed my interest and signed me up with Wanderers Cricket Club from as early as eight years old… it all started from there.” She remembers joining the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Program through People’s Cathedral Primary School and says that experience is what opened her eyes to international cricket. “As part of the program we would attend international matches at Kensington Oval and during breaks we would take part in exhibition games to show off our development. I was inspired from then.” The celebrated player who also plays league cricket in Australia and the United Kingdom (UK), credits the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Program for being the stepping stone to her international career and also her earlier opportunities in cricket. Together, Scotiabank and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) have completely revolutionised cricket development in Barbados, and the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Program is a game changer in the lives of many aspiring young cricketers. Twins Nahje and Nasir Callender, nine, are currently enrolled in the program through St. Paul’s Primary and while both admit that it is “hard work”, they readily agree that the effort does not outweigh the fun. Nahje is keen to excel in the sport and says he has even thought about playing for the West Indies someday. “It has taught me how to bowl and catch, but it is also teaching me how to prepare for hard ball cricket.” While his brother says: “It has helped to build my muscles and made me more disciplined.” Their Dad explained that a family member who resides in the UK visited Barbados and noticed the boys’ commitment to cricket and purchased a full cricket kit for them to practice as home as well. This investment, he added, also helped their development in the sport.

There is no denying the impact the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Program has made on the Caribbean, especially Barbados, where the clear majority of participants originate. Ten-year-old, Isaiah Arthur of St. Gabriel’s Primary School, is very serious about cricket and is confident he will play with the West Indies one day. “I hope it happens. I know the kiddy’s cricket program is a step in the right direction. I am more disciplined and focused since joining.” Locally, the Program has provided coaching and technical supervision of children in primary schools, as well as, technical supervision of physical education teachers since 2000. In 2012, the Kiddy Cricket Festival was launched in Barbados. Featuring an exciting series of preliminary zonal games culminating in a final in which the top eight primary schools battle for the title of top Kiddy Cricket School and the coveted Championship Trophy. Meanwhile, regionally, from 2010 to present the programme has provided nearly 5,500 cricket kits to primary schools across 15 countries, with an annual enrolment of over 150,000 pupils. From the programme’s inception, more than 900,000 children have passed through the Kiddy Cricket program, enjoying the game of cricket both on the field of play and also in the classroom. Robin Parris, WICB Territorial Development Officer (TDO), has managed various components of the program for the past six years. “The Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Program is my baby. My heart sings when I see the children developing through the program while participating in the various activities especially the kiddy cricket festival. As well as, the response from the various principals and primary schools.” He noted that the children meet current West Indies cricketers and spend a day at Kensington Oval during an international match, while also participating on the field and displaying their various skills. “They also benefit from advice from international players.” Robin concluded: “Scotiabank has been so supportive of the program and its various components. Their support is important to the coaches, parents, teachers and to me especially as TDO. Thank you, Scotiabank, for 16 years of incredible support.”

The St. James: The newest luxury development on the West Coast of Barbados.
To bear the name of the most luxurious parish on the island is a bold statement, but the beachfront extravagance expected of the Platinum Coast is epitomized at the condominiums at The St. James. The condominium complex is the newest luxury condo development on the coast, and is an exclusive, intimate grouping of four luxurious apartments sitting on the beautiful beach at Payne’s Bay. While its enviable location precedes it, the complex’s modern architecture and chic design must not be understated. Complete with walk-in closets, modern kitchen, ample storage area and elevator access, each apartment houses five bedrooms over an impressive 4,500-plus square feet of floor space. This includes a self-contained guest cottage that accompanies each unit. Its ground floor unit, known as The Villa, features a 32 ft. swimming pool, private garden and stunning sea views, while units on the other floors offer statement elevated views of the turquoise waters off the beautiful coast. In addition to direct access to Payne’s Bay beach, the condos at The St. James offer access to key amenities such as world-class restaurants, bars, the high-end Limegrove Lifestyle Centre and the golf courses at Sandy Lane and Royal Westmoreland are just a few minutes drive away. This new development has already captured the attention of buyers, with only two units remaining - The Villa and 102.
