Title: Fishers of Men SPS: To explain how central the role of “fishers of men” is to our calling. Key Scripture: Luke 5:10 Supporting Scriptures: 1 Peter 3:16, 1 Peter 3:15, Titus 1:9, Hebrews 5:12 Introduction: Luke 5:10 - Christ challenged this new disciples with this statement…” From now on you will catch men”. Why did he say this? What can we learn about our responsibilities as followers of Christ? ● Highlight the word “catch“… Not hunt, pursue, or destroy… But catch… ● This is a reminder that from the very beginning of our calling, it is about our ability to serve others. It is about our role, and our part in the mission. 1. We serve to “catch” or draw others through our example. ○ 1 Peter 3:16 (NKJV) having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. 2. We serve to “catch” others through our sound defense of the truth. ○ 1 Peter 3:15 (NKJV) But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always [be] ready to [give] a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear; 3. We serve to “catch” others through our inspirational confidence in teaching God’s fundamental truths. ○ Titus 1:9 (NKJV) holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. ○ Hebrews 5:12 (NKJV) For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need [someone] to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. Conclusion: Part of the expectation of Christ toward those that followed him was that they become “fishers of men.” We must be willing to have the same mindset.
