Welcome...

S

pring is definitely in the air! This issue has a focus on Homes & Gardens, so look out for all the local businesses which can help turn your house into your perfect home. Did you know that daffodils now flower, on average, around six weeks earlier than they did a few decades ago? Living In Magazines garden horticulturist and writer, Valerie McBride Munro, discusses how the climate these days really has changed the way our plants grow - see pg 19. There are some great events going on locally in the next couple of months, too. Local Barnes resident and well known actress, Niamh Cusack, is starring in My Brilliant Friend at The Rose Theatre in Kingston, while American singer, Dean Friedman (Lydia, Lydia...) is playing at the Landmark Arts Centre in Teddington. We've got tickets to both performances to give away, so don't miss out - find out how to enter on pg 27. And, of course, we've got the Barnes Music Festival, with a host of spectacular performances - see details pg 31. The Easter holidays are almost upon us, so if you're wondering how to fill the time with the children, look no further than pg 37 to find out what fun activities are on locally. Pippa, Editor

LIVING

Who doesn’t love the idea of living in a light, bright and airy openplan space? Katherine Sorrell explains how to get the most out of it

Image: modishliving.co.uk

W

e’ve all hankered for a large, open-plan living space – where family and friends can be relaxed and sociable together, yet do their own thing at the same time. And the key to ensuring that an open-plan room looks good and functions brilliantly is careful planning. Start by thinking about how you’ll use the space – for cooking, informal eating, entertaining, working, relaxing and so on – and divide it into appropriate areas. Just as if they were separate rooms, but without conventional dividing walls. In some cases these separate zones can be created with changes of level, but generally they’re achieved through the considered use of flooring, colour and pattern, lighting and the positioning of furniture. Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space can be problematic, as kitchens/halls need something splash-proof that can be mopped, while sitting areas ought to feel inviting and comfortable. There are two solutions. Either use different (but complementary) floorings, thus automatically creating visually distinct zones, or lay one practical flooring throughout, giving a sleek and flowing look. Stone or ceramic tiles, engineered or laminate floorboards, rubber and good quality vinyl are all suitable – simply soften with woven or fluffy rugs around your sofas and chairs to create the

'Pale colours will emphasise open airy spaces, while darker shades are dramatic...' framework for a separate ‘living’ area. Pale colours will emphasise open, airy spaces, while darker shades are dramatic and can help make large areas feel cosy. One option in an open-plan room is to zone the scheme by using tones of one colour, going from light at one end to darker at the other. If your space is very long and thin, painting the end walls in a deeper shade makes them appear closer, thus improving the proportions, while a neutral scheme throughout can be given matching accents of a brighter colour – say, a rug in the living area, glasses on the dining table and a couple of kitchen accessories – for a smart and interesting look.

'Good lighting makes a big difference in any room and is especially important for open-plan living...'

You may find that conventional furniture doesn’t work as well as expected in an open-plan space – in which case search for largerthan-average pieces, bearing in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. What you need to avoid, especially in a larger room, is placing the seating around the edges, or spacing it too far apart. Steer clear of the hospital-waitingroom or furniture-showroom look at all costs. Instead, group your seating so that sofas and chairs are sociable, either facing each other or creating a corner (modular units are good for this). If you’re starting from scratch with an open-plan design, try to include an island or peninsular unit between the kitchen and the rest of the room. That way, you get a visual break between the two zones and the cook can comfortably chat with family or guests while preparing food. Kitchen manufacturers now produce plenty of products that blend kitchen, dining and living functions, from cabinets that co-ordinate with free-standing storage to media units that incorporate a TV, so it’s no longer hard to design a space that blends easily from one zone to another. Good lighting makes a big difference in any room, and is especially important for open-plan living, helping to zone the space and provide either strong illumination or soft ambience. Food preparation areas need bright lights, which can usually be built into the bottoms of wall-mounted cabinets or, if you have an island unit, can take the form of a ceiling-mounted track or a row of pendants. In dining and living areas, meanwhile, you’ll want flexible lighting that can be turned up or down easily. Experts advise installing a range of circuits that can be controlled by separate switches or dimmers but, unless

you’re at the building-work stage, this will involve a fair bit of disruption (not to mention the extra expense). Instead, simply introduce flexibility by replacing main light switches with dimmers and plugging in a selection of table or floor lamps at strategic points. One final point: bear in mind that sound carries, and you won’t be able to shut a door to block it out. If you’re eating dinner, watching TV or catching up on emails, you won’t want to be disturbed by the extractor fan howling or the dishwasher gurgling so, if possible, put your washing machine somewhere separate and buy super-quiet appliances. business profile

Building the perfect HOME Make sure you use the right company when extending your home

E

xtending your home is a big investment in time and money, so you want to make sure the company you use is experienced. Dali Pro Services (DPS) has been transforming homes into bigger, beautiful spaces for more than 18 years. Says DPS owner, Dalibor Darak: ‘We belong to the Federation of Master Builders and the Guild of Master Craftsmen, so you know that every job is the result of excellent workmanship. We always provide a high standard in design, management and construction to ensure our customer’s happiness.' House extensions Adding ground floor space not only opens up your kitchen and living space, it can add value to your property, too. Depending on the size of your conversion, you will need to apply for a Building Notice or Full Plan Application. If you don’t know a fully qualified architect, DPS has their own architect and structural engineer, who are experienced in dealing with the local authorities. A typical extension takes eight to 10 weeks to build. Loft conversions Loft conversions are the most cost-effective way of improving your home. They only take around six to eight weeks to construct and by building upwards it means you are using usually dead space rather than sacrificing garden space. DPS offer a complete service from design to finished rooms and provide a fully itemised, fixed price quotation so you can be confident about the cost before work begins. 10

Refurbishments If you don’t need an extension or loft conversion, but aren’t happy with the current layout of your home, DPS can help reconfigure your rooms to increase space, light and useable areas. Or, if you just need your bathroom, kitchen or bedroom refitted, they can help with this, too. New builds DPS’s team are experienced in building everything from a one-bedroom flat through to a seven bedroom family home, multi-storey office or apartment block. They can build you the home of your dreams, with every last detail planned. The team’s knowledge, built up from years of experience, means they can offer you a wide range of building methods, techniques and materials. They can work with you from your first ideas through to design development, statutory planning and building regulation processes to the completed project. DPS Ltd dpsco.co.uk / 0800 0432 333

talking PLANTS I am in complete awe of plants and the way they communicate - not only with each other, but in the way they convey important information to us. But we have to learn how best to listen to the messages

© Valerie McBride-Munro 2017

F

or my money, the plant world has some very clear stuff to tell us about climate change. You may have noticed that your lawn grass is growing faster than ever. Yes, it’s all to do with our changing climate, but the difficulty comes with measuring its effects. Plants have the answer, and scientists at Kew and the Kew 100 project make the point simply and clearly. Phenology is the study of the timing of plant and animal behaviour in relation to climate change. The flowering times of plants, the emergence dates of insects and movements of migratory birds are examples of behaviour, which vary from year to year, depending on the weather. The Kew 100 initiative began in 2000 with the aim of recording the date when a huge range of trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs first produced flowers. However, the beginning of this story is even more extraordinary, and we have to go back in time when a small boy, so fascinated by the subject, started a notebook of observations. For the sake of our story, we will call the young boy John. Each year John observed a huge range of plants, noting down the first flowering date for each in his long list of plants that ran not to hundreds, but a few thousand. He also wanted to lay down a good point of reference, so he decided that a flower was only truly ‘open’ when it produced ripe pollen. Over the years, John’s boyhood fascination endured through his teens, and it can be no surprise that he went on to study Botany at university. He eventually joined the staff at Kew, and stayed there until he retired. His observations continued through all of this time, and he recorded his data into five-year

'The average flowering time for the daffodil was up to six weeks earlier than expected...' averages to take account of minor weather changes. Over his lifetime, John’s results were stark: the average flowering time for, say, the daffodil was up to six weeks earlier than what we would have expected. This early flowering pattern repeatedly crept up slowly, but surely, through all of his plant groups, with some plants showing greater time leaps than others. On his retirement, John presented this remarkable research to Kew. To ensure that this amazing work was carried on, Kew decided to reduce John’s thousand-odd plant list to a more manageable 100. In 2000, it was officially launched as The Kew 100, and all of the plants on the list are still clearly talking today! a day in the life of... a charity director

local people

Jonathan Monckton is Director of the charity RPLC, which distributes crisis, winter fuel and education grants to people in need, as well as supporting local charities and community organisations

‘I

am wide awake by 5.30 every morning. The bus trip from Putney Heath to work is regularly shared with a teacher, nursery nurse, cleaners and hotel staff. Avoiding the rush hour traffic, I am at my desk shortly after 6.30 on most days, which gives me some quiet time to clear my ‘in’ tray and manage emails. 'RPLC was established in 1786, during the reign of George III. As well as helping people in need, the charity also has property assets including charitable housing, with the tenants benefiting from subsidised rents. Ultimately, RPLC aims to help vulnerable people gain selfconfidence, become involved in society and, where appropriate, move into employment. 'While the local area is generally perceived to be affluent, there are areas of real need that can so easily be ignored. Some of these include loneliness among older people, homelessness, transgenerational dependency on benefits and high levels of alcohol and drug abuse among young teenagers. Through its various activities, RPLC tries to do what it can to meet these needs and improve the capacity of local organisations working in the field. 'The bulk of my day is spent on managing

One of the charities helped is the River Thames Boat Project

the property and financial aspects of the charity while retaining oversight of grant and education activities. I believe that the voluntary sector can benefit from working more closely together. I keep in touch with funders such as the Barnes Workhouse Fund and others. 'At lunchtime, a brief visit to the local deli often leads to a sharing of local gossip or, alternatively, a brisk walk along the river can clear the air. 'It is particularly good to know that some relatively straightforward activities can help transform peoples’ lives for the better. We often hear of people suddenly affected by bad luck – a traffic accident or illness, for example – who then end up in serious financial difficulty. It is good to be in a position to offer them assistance to see them through. Occasionally, it can be remarkable how things turn out. I once had a visit from a homeless man, who was living in a tent near the river. Two weeks later a property became available that was ideal for him. The best thing was to see his beaming smile when he visited me a few days later, in denims, covered in splatters of paint – so happy to have a place to call his own. 'At the end of the day, a four mile walk home across Richmond Park is perfect - if the weather isn’t too bad!'

Colin Ferns started working for Mercedes as a 16-year-old apprentice. Thirty-six years later, he is still passionate about them

C

olin Ferns has run his own independent Mercedes service and repair shop in Richmond for 20 years. Here he talks about his love for these great cars. Why did you first work with Mercedes? Since I was a child I have been passionate about all mechanical things. I joined Mercedes as an apprentice and have worked exclusively with that brand ever since. It is a pleasure for me to work with a product that embodies engineering excellence in the way that Mercedes does. We take pride in our work and can do anything to do with Mercedes cars from tyre pressures to engine re-builds, accident repair and full restorations. Do you prefer working on new or old models? Both! We are fully equipped to deal with all models, including the latest. Our technical equipment and information is leased to us by Mercedes in Germany and so we get monthly updates to our technical information which enables us to keep track of any new developments such as software upgrades or recalls. Maybachs and AMG cars are consequently no problem for us. Why do you think Mercedes owners like coming to an independent firm like yours? The reasons are manifold but the primary reasons are to save money and get a more efficient and personal service at the same time. In the modern era people are simply not fooled by the fresh coffee, free newspapers and comfortable sofas of the main dealer. The savvy customer realises that those things come at a cost. We use genuine parts which come direct from Mercedes. The only small exceptions are if we fit a repaired exchange part rather than a new one direct from Mercedes - a radiator, for example.

We are unique in that we only deal in the one brand which enables us to have dedicated equipment, tooling and, most importantly, familiarity with the product to extraordinarily high levels. Is their warranty affected by coming to you? No, not even in the first three years. Since 2003, European law has made it illegal for manufacturers to insist that you take your car to an authorised agent for servicing in order to comply with the terms of the warranty. The only condition that has to be met nowadays in order for your warranty to be unaffected is that the service(s) are carried out at the prescribed times, using manufacturer’s instructions and parts. Naturally all of our customers will benefit from such service when having their cars serviced by us - but at around 40% saving over main dealer prices. All services are logged on the Mercedes central database, where required. How do you compare in price? Mercedes dealerships are currently charging £168 per hour including VAT for labour. We only charge £90. One lady was recently quoted £7,500 by Mercedes after mis-fuelling her car. She came to us and saved over 90%! colinferns.com You can see Colin in action at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnOkfL_vsoE

6 random questions... Niamh Cusack Actress and Barnes resident, Niamh Cusack, is starring in My Brilliant Friend at the Rose Theatre, Kingston Favourite theatre (apart from the Rose Theatre, of course)? Probably the Dorfman at the National. But I have also really loved working at HOME in Manchester and the Sheffield Crucible studio. Ibsen or Shakespeare? Do you know what, I really, really cannot say. They are the two greats as far as I’m concerned. The language of Shakespeare is unparalleled. But the understanding of humanity that both these playwrights reveal is pure gold. Both playwrights for me remind us how epic it is to be alive. That’s what I love. So sorry. I won’t choose. Do you get stuck into a good meal before or after a theatre performance? Before. And then I snack when I get home, ‘cos I’m always starving. Current events – on the sidelines or on the march? I’m a marcher. I marched against Brexit. And if I hadn’t been rehearsing on that Saturday, I would have protested against Trump. If we keep being vocal, keep being seen and heard in our protests things

might change for the better… Do you have a close friendship, like Elena and Lila’s? I have four female friends with whom I have very close friendships. And then there are my sisters… What do you love about living in Barnes? I feel blessed every day living in Barnes, walking by the river. The amount of green and trees there is a stone’s throw away from our front door.

Love eating out?

ANTIPODEA

Check out livinginmagazines.co.uk for more restaurant reviews

The beautiful building of the old post office in Kew is now home to a mix of Middle Eastern and Australian cuisine

I

kind of didn’t want to like Antipodea. Protective of Kew’s little enclave of Torelli’s café, the Tap on the Line pub, and Kew’s stalwart bistro, Ma Cuisine - the wonderful Michelin starred Glasshouse can look after itself - Antipodea’s all-encompassing breakfast-lunch-dinner offerings meant they could all be hit. But I do like it. A lot. And the others seem to be holding their own. I’ve been a few times and the staff are just incredibly welcoming, friendly and, while casual, seem like they’ve been trained to the standard of a top-end restaurant rather than a local eatery. The décor is modern, but cosy, although the wicker chairs are a bit cumbersome and the fire pit, while lovely, can get a little hot if you’ve got a seat right next to it. I went for lunch with a couple of friends, both of whom have done restaurant reviews for me in the past, so it was lovely to all eat together. The menu is large, coming in magazine-sized proportions, with lots of choice - many dishes with a Middle Eastern or Australian slant - and including lots of delicious vegetarian options. I had the woodland mushroom risotto served with spinach, yoghurt, pesto and Gorgonzola (£13.50). The rice was soft and creamy, with the hit of Gorgonzola adding perfect flavour. Absolutely delicious and a good-sized portion. Sara went for the Bengali eggplant and tofu salad with lentils, cavolo nero, pomegranate, roasted cauliflower and cardamom dressing

'The staff are just incredibly welcoming...' (£13.50, pictured). She said the Indian spices really came through, but the portion was small for the price. While she wasn’t blown away by the flavours, I tried it and thought it was even better than my own choice. Mandy, who had mentioned her own main course at dinner on a previous visit had been disappointingly small, was pleasantly surprised by the size of her prawn guvec – prawns with garlic, pepper, tomato and feta with sourdough toast (£9.50) - which as a starter was pretty substantial, which it should be for the price! Her side of of avocado was a hefty £5.20 for a mashed pear. She enthused about the prawns, which were perfectly cooked and while the tomato sauce was thick and strong, the feta calmed down the flavour. For dessert, we shared a pot of nutty mousse and chocolate ganache with caramalised hazelnut (£4.50) – sublime and somehow enough for three, although I could easily have scoffed the lot on my own. Antipodea isn’t going to be easy on the wallet, but I think once you’ve eaten there, you’ll want to keep going back. Pippa Duncan 9 Station Approach, Kew TW9 3QB 020 8940 6532 / antipodea.co.uk

Tackle hay fever head on to avoid feeling under the weather this spring

H

ay fever or seasonal allergies can be caused by the pollen of numerous trees, grasses or plants and affects around 18 million people in the UK. Symptoms include an itchy and/or runny nose, sneezing and irritated, watery eyes. Diagnosis If you’re unsure hay fever is causing your symptoms, see your GP. They may refer you for an allergen test to determine whether you’re allergic to pollen or other organic material, such as animal hair or dust mites. Skin prick tests only test for common allergens, so may be inconclusive. Your skin is pricked and exposed to a tiny dose of allergen - it should react if you’re allergic. Blood test for the Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody, produced when you encounter pollen, may also be used.

but can cause rebound congestion after a few days, so only use them for occasional relief. Steroid nasal sprays or drops prevent and reduce inflammation in the nasal lining and can help relieve eye itchiness, too. Antihistamine nasal sprays relieve an itchy nose and reduce sneezing.

Treatment Research by Allergy UK in 2014 showed that 62% of sufferers found their current medication ineffective, yet they failed to seek better alternatives or didn’t use it properly. The charity found that only 14% of steroid nasal spray users were actually using them correctly.

Inhalers and injections If seasonal allergies cause or exacerbate asthma, you may be offered a steroid inhaler, such as salbutamol. Injectable medications are sometimes given if steroids aren’t adequate.

Oral medications Antihistamines block the action of histamine, a chemical triggered by allergen exposure, to reduce or stop your allergic reaction. They may not relieve a blocked nose, but are usually effective against other symptoms. Steroids are only usually used short-term if other medications aren’t working or if your hay fever causes or aggravates asthma. They reduce symptoms by reducing inflammation. Nasal sprays Decongestant nasal sprays unblock your nose

Eyedrops Antihistamine eyedrops reduce itchiness and watering.

Immunotherapy If your symptoms are persistent or severe, your doctor may suggest immunotherapy to progressively build allergen immunity. Prevention Reduce pollen contact by avoiding drying washing outside, showering before bed and closing windows. allergyuk.org Helpline: 01322 619898

what's on LOCALLY Theatre… Heart of Darkness 3 - 8 April

Join Marlow on the deck of his steamboat, as he recounts the story of his traumatic journey down the Congo River deep into the dark, greedy heart of European colonialism. Stripped back to the essentials – one man, the objects around him and his story – this adaptation draws out the intensely personal narrative in Conrad’s tale. A voyage through Marlow’s fractured memories of his confrontation with the darkest truths of his society. Tickets from £14. 8pm start. osoarts.org.uk Living In Offer: book a ticket for the above show and bring along this page on the night to enjoy a half-price glass of wine (one per ticket holder).

Theatre... My Brilliant Friend Until 2 April

The Rose Theatre hosts a two-part dramatization of Elena Ferrante’s hugely popular epic family saga. The story chronicles the lives of friends, Elena and Lila - played by Niamh Cusack and Catherine McCormack - from their poor childhoods in Naples, through to their passionate affairs as they grow older, their careers and family struggles. Time magazine listed Ferrante as one of this year’s most influential people on the planet, despite the fact little is known about the author, who writes under a pseudonym. The two parts of the play can be seen on different evenings or together in a matinee/ evening performance on selected dates. Tickets £31 - £81. Box office: 020 8174 0900. rosetheatrekingston.org
