Get InspiredStroll around Barnegat Light Gardens have inspired artists for centuries. They represent a personal vision and a place for creative expression becoming a riotous palette of color as natures canvas during the sunny days of summer. Can there be any better way than for gardens to connect us with the majesty and beauty of nature? Take a walk around Barnegat Light any morning or evening to experience some of the secret jewels hidden throughout our town. Individual gardens become a personal exchange between the gardener and the visitor. As you walk around the quaint town of Barnegat Light you can experience the many individual expressions of charming gardens which reflect the personalities of our residents. Barnegat Light is enriched by the beautiful displays in a neighbors yard, whether its in a container of potted geraniums, clusters of petunias lining the walkways, large singular blossoms of the hibiscus plant or the grandiose and showy “snowballs” of hydrangea bushes in their various shades of pinks, whites and blues. For example, the exquisite award-winning Edith Quinn Garden located at 5th and Central Avenues behind the Barnegat Light Lighthouse Museum is maintained by the Long Beach Island Garden Club.

Unique gardens are much like fingerprints or snowflakes in that no two gardens are ever the same. The same can be said for time spent in the garden. No two days in the garden are ever the same because the light changes, blooms appear then wither, grasses grow and the varying weather and seasons effect the garden daily. In Victorian culture, flowers were the language of love. Since feelings could not be proclaimed publicly, they were expressed through flowers. Learning the special symbolism of flowers became a popular pastime during the 1800s. Each flower was assigned a particular meaning. So, please enjoy the glorious gardens of Barnegat Light this summer and remember, “The garden is a love song... A duet between man and Mother Nature.”

There are many other individual lush gardens throughout the town. Take a walk and peek through the gates and fences to appreciate the rich patterns of color, the patchwork of textures and the personality of the gardens designed with pride by their owners. Several blocks away on 7th Street is another community treasure garden located between St. Peters Church and the Parish House. It provides quiet, tree covered paths to stroll through and enjoy or meditate. Here it can be said that gardens are the pathway to the soul. 6 Summer 2013 6

A Day in the Life of a

By John W. Panacek

Tile Fishermen Wire started peeling off the drum as our fishing vessel the Anna Eileen made headway across the frigid canyon waters. I stood, as I always did in the back of the boat with one hand on the tile leader and the other grasped onto the metal bait box watching the highflyer become smaller and smaller in our wake. It was April and the seas were a good 10’, not the nicest of conditions but it was fishable. Salt spray filled the air after each wave hit the bow and even though it wasn’t cold enough to freeze on the boat, like winter trips, I still had my slicker jacket hood halfway over my face to block the stinging mist. Later today the wind is supposed to die out which will make things easier. As Captain Itchy gave me the nod I began to clip tilefish leaders one by

one onto the steel cable flying out behind our boat. It was 6 am, we had a long day ahead with hauling back and getting those fish gutted and on ice. Looking forward to finishing late tonight. A week of this oughta give us a decent catch...hopefully the price will be good when we hit the dock. Fishing methods for Tilefish has modernized over the years but it is now accomplished by setting out a 5-15 mile steal cable with a high flyer, a 4 foot flag with a float and weight on the bottom so it stands upright, and a tilefish leader about every 15 feet or so. A tilefish leader consists of a longline snap, a piece of 400 pound monofilament, and a tilefish hook which has a swivel attached. When setting the gear, the high flyer is thrown off the back of the boat while the boat goes forward, the cable spins off the drum and sinks to the bottom. When hauling back, a crew member grapples the gear and feeds it through the pulleys to the drum where it can be brought in like a giant fishing reel. The captain stands at the overhead block where the line comes into the boat, drives the boat down the path of the cable and unclips each leader as he winds them in. As these fish make their way into the boat, a crew member guts the fish and quickly throws it on ice.

John Panacek

Tilefish, also known as Golden Tile or Northern Tile are very well known for their tasty, white flaky meat. In the past they were referred to as “poor man’s lobster”. These fish are found in anywhere from 400 to 1000 feet of water, in temperatures from 49 - 58 degrees, and hiding in burrows. Since they are found mainly out at the Georges Banks or the Hudson Canyon, the boats need to be seaworthy enough to head out 100 plus miles. They are a beautiful fish, weighing in from 10 - 40 lbs but known to reach 60 - 70 lbs., and have a blue green color with an iridescent look, with numerous bright yellow and gold spots. Their bellies are white and their distinguished characteristic is an upside down rudder shaped flap of skin behind their head. They have a large

toothy mouth with serious crushing power because they feed on almost anything that finds its way down to that depth including squid, small fish, bottom dwelling invertebrates, worms, crabs, and even sea urchins. “I remember a while back, my buddy and I were out longlining for tilefish and we put a rubber glove on the hook as bait, sure enough we caught one with it and got back our glove too” Owners Captain Lou Puskas and Captain John Larson, created the market at Viking Village for tilefish ever since Captain Lou discovered them in the 1970’s. In fact, Barnegat Light was nicknamed “The Tilefish Capital of the World” in those early Captain Lou Puskas years. Lighthouse Marina, the other commercial dock called “Meyers Dock” at the time on 6th St., Barnegat Light is also a large supplier of tilefish with several boats targeting this fish. “Four of the boats up here at Lighthouse Marina rely heavily on the tile fishery and we are always excited for the tile season which is mainly spring and summertime for us. We are also excited to hear about the new quota that is now in Barnegat Light which will be great for the fisherman in town” says Capt Danny Mears Jr from the fishing vessel Monica . This fishery is highly managed by the MidAtlantic council, a government agency monitoring our stock . It is done with a quota system, meaning a boat has to own or lease an annual quota to be able to fish for Tile. Luckily Barnegat Light is acquiring more quota as of late so that our local boats can catch more of this allowable catch, providing jobs and income to the community with many fishermen being involved. “This management system is aimed at allowing for a more sustainable fishery for future generations, and that is always our goal” says Ernie Panacek, manager of Viking Village. Look for Golden Tilefish in local restaurants, it doesn’t get anymore local.

COAST GUARD’S MOST FAMOUS MASCOT 1937-1951 He served for 11 years on the USSCG Campbell. When he retired he lived in Barnegat Light at the Coast Guard Station. His headstone can be viewed there.

SINBAD LIVES! Chief Petty Officer Sinbad, dog is still alive in the hearts of service men for his motivation and inspiration during World War 11. Today, his life size sculpture in bronze is centered in the mess hall of the USSGDC Campbell (wmec-909) based at the Portsmouth Navel Shipyard In Kittery Maine. It is believed that he will keep the ship safe on its missions just as the sailors believed that no harm would come to them during the war. And it was true. Sinbad slept and ate his chow with the men and even had his own battle station. Battles and hurricanes never dulled his love of standing on the heaving deck with spray breaking over his wiry body. To Coast Guardsmen on the Campbell he was a real hero. Coat of Arms USCGC Campbell commemorates the attack on Campbell on 11 May 1944 with the famous

mascot Sinbad. Sinbad was so much a part of the Campbell that when the famous naval historian Samuel Eliot Morison had a coat of arms designed for the ship, Sinbad was placed on top of the crest. Sinbad was very famous and one of the publications “Sinbad Of The Coast Guard” By George F. Foley, Jr. Is The Adventurous, True Story Of Sinbad Whose Exploits Became Legend. The Commander and the crew considered Sinbad essential to the morale of the sailors. When the ship is underway it flys a large “Sinbad Lives” flag while underway. War dogs are as important to the service men today as they were in the 1945 and there are many Sinbad’s helping to keep America safe today. Barnegat light celebrates Sinbad by making him our mascot. Sinbad lives in Barnegat Light too! Books, cd’s and other Sinbad related items can be purchased at

Americana by the Seashore. All proceeds will be donated to our veterans who are in need of service dogs and local shelters. Books are also at Barnegat Light museum. 26 Summer 2013 26

Old Coast Guard Site

Barnegat Light, in an effort to preserve its quaint fishing village image, passed an open lands referendum. In 2008. This enabled the town to have a source for funds in case anything in town came available to prevent over development, keeping with its quiet refuge image that makes Barnegat Light unique. This put one penny on the tax rate. The Coast Guard property, located at Bayview and Sixth Street became available for auction because the housing was no longer up to government standards and it was more economical to give family housing allowances, with single guardsmen bunking at the station.

Before the Coast Guard owned the property it was a shipyard called Sundquist Shipyard which had several buildings, one a pound boat mending shop and housing upstairs for fishermen. Another building was for shipbuilding where several of the early charter boats and skiffs were built. Councilman Frank Mikuletzski remembers his father’s charter boat The Ebbie II was built

there. Because of the open space tax, nearly $100,000 a year is generated in revenue which will be used to pay off the purchase. Barnegat Light was ready to be able to participate in the bidding along with three other bidders. Each bidder had to put up $40,000 to participate with bid increments at 20,000. The final bid won by Barnegat Light was $3,090,000 for the two acre parcel

preventing the property from being developed. “If sold to a developer it would have been worth over $10 million and added traffic to the area” said mayor Kirk Larson.Taxpayer surveys and input from the Open Lands Committee will offer ideas for using the property; such as a concert stage, fitness trail, landscaping and more. With its beautiful view of the bay and Lighthouse it will prove to be an inspirational spot for people to gather for events or concerts.

What’s a Daymark? A daymark or a day marker is the daytime identifier of an aid to navigation (ATON). Generally, the daymark conveys to the mariner, during daylight hours, the same significance as does the aid’s light or reflector at night Green Colors, Green Lights, and Odd Numbers These mark the edge of the channel on your port (left) side as you enter from the open sea or head upstream. Numbers usually will increase consecutively as you return from the open sea or head upstream.
