A BARNEGAT CITY

Vacation...

IN 1910

Before cell phones, nylon bathing suits, restaurants and mini golf, Barnegat City* was considered a special seaside resort.

Arrival to Long Beach Island was by train on the Tuckerton Railroad or by boat on the Connetquot from the mainland. Your choice of hotels in town were the Sunset Hotel, The Social which boasted decent rooms for the sportier set or the more refined Oceanic Hotel. Mule driven wooden carts were at both stations to escort you and your baggage to the hotels. Oh yes, don’t forget your wool bathing suit….and the knee socks to match for the ladies. Only so much exposed skin was considered appropriate. Barnegat City had lovely, dune-filled beaches for the tourists staying at the Oceanic. Bath houses were close to the water for an easy change into your bathing suits. The Barnegat Lighthouse was nearby. It wasn’t a tourist attraction yet, as it was still in use as a beacon for the ships sailing up and down the coast. The stately keepers cottage was not yet subject to the ravages of coastal erosion, nor was the lighthouse. Head lighthouse keeper Clarence Cramer still climbed the 217 steps at least twice daily to keep the light shining.

Barnegat Light Museum Gardens

Fishing, boating and crabbing were some things to do on your vacation. Just sitting in the rocking chairs on the hotel porches enjoying the cool ocean breezes was another way to while the time away. Perhaps you’d run into some locals to chat with. The Archer family had built cottages on 12th Street, along with the South Jersey glassworks family, the Whitneys. If you needed some necessities, you could go to Butterworth’s store on 4th Street (now the inlet deli). Meals were served only at the hotels. Restaurants had not sprung onto the scene yet. Menus certainly included lots of fish, oyster, clams; all so abundant at this time. The schoolhouse on 5th Street was closed for the summer. Who knew what the 12 or so students did for the summer vacation. Maybe they held summer jobs at the hotels, or harvested seafood for a few extra dollars. Or were some working as lifeguards? Were there lifeguards back then? The schoolhouse is now the Barnegat Light Museum, open daily in the summer from 10am to 4pm. Run by the Barnegat Light Historical Society, it contains so many pictures and historical artifacts to tell the story of Barnegat Light history. Friendly and informed docents welcome you to visit. We are child friendly too. Bring the kids and enjoy the surrounding gardens, lovingly maintained by the LBI Garden Club. There is so much to learn about the history of this town and Long Beach Island. Please come visit us. Private tours available off season. Check our website at www.bl-hs.org

White's Market ...since 1954 Painting by Lori Bonanni

Remember the good old days when there was a neighborhood market and the shopkeeper knew you. Your mom probably sent you to the store to buy some bread and milk and you bought some candy with the change. They had a great deli case and made sandwiches so big you couldn't eat them all at one time. If so, be sure to stop by Barnegat Light’s very own .. White's Market .. It's a local treasure rich with history of our town. It was founded in 1954 by Lloyd and Josephine White. In the early days Whites Market was open year round. During the storm of 1962, they had to dig a large hole to bury all the refrigerated and frozen food to keep it cold. There was no electricity for several months. When White's finally re-opened there first deliveries came across the bay on the “mail boat” because the Boulevard remained impassable. During this period Josephine home schooled their son, Michael since the school bus wasn't able to get to Barnegat Light for several months. Michael was thrilled at being unable to get to High School. 1983 was the end of an era, when Lloyd passed away.

White's is now owned and operated by their son, Michael, in the same spirit as their parents had done. He is known to many as “Mike, the Meat Man”. He and his friend, Carol have tried to have the business keep pace with the times...but ever so slowly. Each season Mike opens on Memorial Day and closes promptly on Labor Day to mark the end of another summer. He hires mostly young people from the community that return year after year. Mike says “we love our employees”. “They are highly motivated, because of their parentage. They are intelligent and a joy to befriend. Some of Mike's favorite employees have had a family record of employing the mom, the daughter in law and eventually the granddaughter of the same family. Mike said another family had five daughters, we had them all!!! The town has evolved considerably over the years but the changes have been incremental. White's Market is still a place where you feel like you are walking through the door where time drifted back to a quieter life..

Night Fly

The Night Fly portion of the 3rd Annual LBI Fly International Kite Festival will be back to the Barnegat Light State Park for a second-consecutive year.

People can follow more details of the event as we get closer at:

The entire festival runs from October 6th- 9th (Columbus Day weekend.) The Night Fly will take place Sunday, October 8th, beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m.

www.lbifly.com

Last year the event had approximately 2,000 spectators pack the area for the event. The kiters hope to surpass that this year. The Kite Festival committee, as well as our 40 invited kiters, (who come from all over the world), absolutely love the environment and "Old Barney" served as a perfect backdrop for the event. The photos in this story are taken by Wayne Herrschaft, a kiter who participated on that windy, blustery night. Our cover photo was taken by Barnegat Light resident Albert Paglialunga; “The jetty is my favorite spot in Barnegat Light especially watching the sun set behind Old Barney. What I loved about this moment was it looked and felt surreal. Everyone was looking up. The kites resembled celestial objects or UFOs. They added another dimension to the night sky like they were planets or stars. Mark your calendars for this moving inspirational experience that truly highlights the amazing scenery The Lighthouse Park and inlet provides in Barnegat Light. The LBI FLY International Kite Festival was conceived by Lisa Willoughby, a resident of Surf City, who is an internationally-renowned kite flier. Together, with the LBI Chamber of Commerce, she believed that bringing such a wonderfully colorful, family friendly event to LBI would be a perfect match.

Ed Heitman

Barnegat Light’s Local Watercolor Artist “When I lived on 12th Street, I loved my neighbors…The Walnuts, Zebers, Archers, Litches, Larsons, & Saias… one of the first friendly faces was a lil girl who brought me some drinking water while building my round house. She also gave me her new kindergatrten picture of herself which I put on a shelf in my workshop” Growing up on East 12th Street in Barnegat Light was special, not only because my father grew up in our house there, but because of our neighbor, Ed Heitman. He bought the Queen Ann house next to ours when I was about 10, and still lives there at the age of 93, off season of course due to not having any heat in the house. Born in 1923 and educated in Philadelphia. Ed attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts (now University of the Arts) and then went on to Temple University for his masters in psychology with a minor in sculpture. He taught art and mechanical drawing to junior high school students in Philadelphia for 26 years when he retired in 1975. He also worked as a crew manager for stage sets at the Plays and Players Playhouse in Philadelphia where his friends there introduced him to LBI. After renting in Surf City for a few years, he later discovered Barnegat Light where he loved the wide beaches and wild foliage. He loved it so much he bought a lot on the corner of 12th & Central Ave and in 1960 with Architects Tofani & Fox, built the first round house on LBI, very modern at the time. Ed was also one of the 5 founding faculty members at the LBI Foundation of Arts and Sciences in Loveladies where he taught art every summer to pre-schoolers from 1959-1975. In 1968, a large Queen Anne house on the same street (next to ours) went up for sale and Ed bought it. He grew up in a rowhouse in Philadelphia and always dreamed of owning a big house. It is a large 3 story house with a screened in wrap-around porch. Nestled amongst many trees and shrubs and sitting on two lots, it has a charm that sets you back in time. Combined with Ed’s love for flowers, it has been featured on house & garden tours through the years. During the retired winter months, Ed volunteered for the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society which features the famous Philadelphia Flower Show every March. There he spent 16 years helping crews setup which he says was “a great experience”. He remembers tear down with so many bulbs heading for the trash, so he scooped them up and headed for the shore where he said his car looked like “it was heading for the Rose bowl” with flowers coming out of every window. The interior of the house is “eclectic”, furnished with 26 Summer 2013 26

Studio / workshop

“trash pickings & the generosity of friends”. He has refinished, refurbished, reupholstered, or repainted all its contents and trim inside and it now looks like a museum. “Every piece has a story”. He even made all his own slipcovers with a treadle sewing machine. The property also has a small garage in the back that was Ed’s “workshop”. He framed (with local weathered dune fence) the many “beach scene” watercolors that he painted and sold every summer. He would take his paper and watercolors up to the beach daily and paint, always ending with a dip in the ocean.

And His Trademark Beach Scenes

Ed had a shop at Viking Village for 10 years named “SEA THINGS” which closed in 1978. He also had a stand for 15 years at the Viking Village Arts & Crafts Shows every summer and was always the first to sell out. Many repeat buyers would be waiting for his car to arrive with a load of freshly painted beach scenes so they could add to their collection. Ed has retired the paint brush now, but his paintings continue to sell in local galleries from these collections “Your kindergarten picture is still there” he recently told me, 55 years later.
