Anything and everything you want to know about LBI’s only brewery ask owner and entrepreneur, Rob Zarko. While heading down the parkway with the ale brewing in the brew house, Rob explained how the business was opening August 5th on the backside of Bay Village. The brewery overlooks Panzones Field between 9th St. and Taylor. During the season it will be open seven days a week from 11 AM -10 PM then in the off season it will be open Thursday-Sunday. Your experience will include a tour of the brewery and the option to try some of their handcrafted ales. Options include IPA’s, Wheat Ale’s, Stouts, Belgium’s,

Ultimately the people’s wish is the Brewery’s command.” It started as a hobby in his in-laws beach house in Ship Bottom back in 1995, a beautiful place he called home which he loved and could never forget. Rob received his brewery license four years ago in PA. THE WINDMILL

LBIs ONLY Purveyor of the Original Belgian Waffle! Even though their generous portions of ice cream are to melt for, The Windmill is best known for its signature dish Belgian Waffles with The Works. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Windmill, established in 1968, is one of the original quaint stores located in the heart of Bay Village, a picturesque community of businesses appealing to every age. Open through Chowder Fest, their hours of operation are 11:30 am - 11:00 pm in the height of the summer season. Owner, Felicity BeMent, met her husband Wheeler in 2000. Wheeler’s grandfather built their multigenerational house in the early 60s. Wheeler loved spending every summer on the island, and eventually took a job at Bay Village Pizza. When he met Felicity, he shared the island experience with her. She fell in love with both him and the island. Fast forward 16 years, they now have three beautiful children ages 5-11. The BeMent family looks forward to growing the business, maintaining its decades of success, “but more importantly, we want to maintain the charm and character for which The Windmill is known.” Living in Houston, Texas, I asked her, “Why an ice cream shop on LBI?” Without hesitation, Felicity answered,” LBI is a great place for families. Who doesn’t want to spend their summer on the beach?” When this opportunity arose, they prayed for God to close the door if it wasn’t His will, but the door remained wide open. After much research, they took a leap of faith to pursue this new business venture.

They have 32+ flavors which rotate seasonally, including Blueberry Cheesecake, Pumpkin, Red Velvet, etc. Whether the flavor is Double Dunker, Party Cake, Sweet and Salty, or Chocolate Éclair, they all look and taste yummy. Their custom dipped cones are made fresh daily. They also offer cookie and pretzel cones. Their toppings range from Reese’s Cups to chopped Jolly Ranchers. Their smooth toppings include caramel, peanut butter, hot fudge, and more. The signature dish, the warm Belgian Waffle with The Works, is enough to satisfy the hungriest of appetites. Starting with a warm, fresh Belgian Waffle and powdered sugar, two slabs of ice cream are piled on along with fresh strawberries. The final presentation is completed with a large helping of whip cream and a strawberry garnish. Skip dinner and try the Waffle with “The Works”! So join me as I head over for a big fat ice cream with sprinkles and a guaranteed customer service smile to take back to the beautiful beach so typical of LBI. - Cheryl Palermo

The Windmill menu includes: hand dipped and soft serve ice cream, as well as hand dipped yogurt and low fat yogurt. Their ice cream novelties for kids (which make them come back again and again) include: Hello Kitty,

Sponge Bob, Sour Patch Kids, and Spider Man. They also serve water ice, fruit bars and tofu ice cream sandwiches for the nondairy customers, milk shakes, malts, floats, and smoothies made from real fruit puree. They even make Red Bull and Nutella smoothies.

The Chicken or the Egg otherwise known as the Chegg, is sometimes known as the center of town in Beach Haven, LBI. I had the pleasure of being able to meet with one of the co-owners of The Chicken or the Egg, Craig Cohen. I asked Craig about the Ludicrous challenge, which if you aren’t familiar with it, the Ludicrous challenge is where you have to eat 12 original wings with the Ludicrous sauce on them in 15 minutes. The Ludicrous Sauce is a SUPER spicy hot sauce! Craig told me that The Ludicrous Challenge was not very popular until it appeared on Man VS Food. Man VS Food is a show on the Travel Channel, starring Adam Richman. Adam Richman travels America doing crazy food challenges. After hearing about The Chicken or the Egg, the show came to LBI and asked if they could do The Ludicrous Challenge on the show. Craig and co-owner/brother Mark of course said yes. Challenge accepted. “It was pretty wild, yeah. You want us to be on TV? Sure!” said Craig, when I asked him what his reaction was to being on the show was. The show aired on August 25th 2010. Craig told me the challenge used to be pretty rare, but after the show aired, an interest in it began to grow. “The challenge is pretty rough, some people can’t even get through one wing. I don’t even want one!” said Craig, describing the challenge. “This place is awesome,” exclaimed Craig, “it blows me away! It’s just an amazing feeling when people say this is the center of town.” I told Craig how almost everyone I know on LBI goes to the Chicken or the Egg. I asked him if he uses a lot of advertising. “A little advertising here and there, but word of mouth

is huge! But this whole social media thing made it big.” Along with social media spreading the word about Chegg, they have a website. On the website you can find an online menu, and an internet store. Tons of stuff is for sale on the Internet store, such as: beach towels, sauces, t-shirts, and stickers. “A lot of people don’t know it’s open 24 hours, it’s kind of like our alter ego.” said Craig. Dinner is the biggest shift of the day, and it barely dies down once the bars close! “Interesting is a good word to describe the 2 am – 5 am time of the day. Sometimes more than you wish. Some of these weekends get insane. This is a party town.” said Craig. The Chicken or the Egg does not serve alcohol, but they are BYOB. This is another surprise to many people. Craig said he’s been impressed with how much people can control themselves, “Although there’s always 1 or 2 idiots you have to say something to. But otherwise it’s great.” said Craig. Along with being a great restaurant, and being opened all hours, Chicken or the Egg has a GREAT take out business. “If people don’t know about our take-out before they come here, they sure will after eating here. Customers will be sitting at tables eating and people will be walking up and down carrying piles upon piles of boxes.” To end our interview, Craig and I talked about how the business has grown. “It’s amazing how things have gone over the past 25 years, we used to be across the street from Murphy’s in a much smaller space. Now we’re here” said Craig. -Emma Colby

Finding Blue Hippo Tang and Clownfish

After seeing the movie, you may start thinking of buying a Blue Tang but you will be better off with stuffed fish or plastic toys. The Blue Hippo Tang is a difficult fish to keep in captivity. It is beautiful, yes, but it requires a very large aquarium (180 gallons), pristine water conditions, and someone who is knowledgeable about the care and husbandry of this delicate fish. It is not for beginners.

Movie character fish are based on actual living marine life…Nemo is a Clownfish, and Dory is a Blue Hippo Tang. Dory actually goes by several names: Blue Hippo Tang, Regal Tang, Pacific Blue Tang, Blue Surgeonfish, Palette Surgeonfish, and of course it’s scientific name: Paracanthurus hepatus.

There are plenty of suitable fish that look like Dory, and are easy to keep, and fascinating to watch. Check out the Yellow Tail Blue Damsel for example, as a great option. And if you are considering Nemo, please consider an aquacultured Clownfish. These fish are bred in captivity so they are not taken from the wild reefs. They are typically healthier, hardier and used to life in an aquarium. So please, let Dory and Nemo continue to live free in the ocean.

Tropical LBI Phyoplankton is similar to plants that grow on the ground because they contain chlorophyll and require sunlight to live. Phytoplankton float in the upper part of the ocean in order to absorb sunlight. They convert inorganic nutrients such as nitrates, phosphates and sulfur and convert them into proteins, fats and carbohydrates. 2380 East Bay Ave Manahawkin, NJ 08050

Phytoplankton provide food for whales, shrimp, snails and jellyfish. The phytoplankton appeared when the Atlantic Ocean experiences upwelling, which is when cooler, deeper water is pushed to the surface. Deep water contains the nutrients. Phytoplankton reflect the turquoise wavelengths. Since we have been experiencing less rain than usual, the drought is causing much less muddy river water to flow into the ocean. Muddy river water will make the ocean appear greenish and stir up the sand clouding the water. We can thank the phytoplankton for our beautiful blue water this year!

Phoenix Custom Modular Homes was created when two of its principals, with over 50 years of experience in the manufactured housing industry in NJ, decided to combine forces and form a company. Their company Mission was simple - build “Quality” Energy Efficient “Custom” Modular Homes in the State of New Jersey. Homes they would be proud to move into themselves! The main goal inside this mission was to create a pleasant experience for their customers during the process of building their dream home; one they would be sure to tell their friends, neighbors, colleagues and family about. With this philosophy, the business would not only grow but would survive even in the toughest of markets because of truly satisfied customers. At Phoenix Custom Modular Homes, it is all about the customer! It all started in 1996 with the first home on a lagoon in Chadwick Beach Island. This home, a strong survivor of Hurricane Sandy, is one of the many reasons there is so much interest in Modular Construction today. Putting a home up in the air on pilings that is constructed with more wood than a typical site built structure and building it with 2”x6” outer walls (typical site built uses 2”x 4”) makes for a more sound structure. These 2”x 6” outer walls allow for a higher R-Value of insulation as well making the structure more energy efficient and saving the homeowner money each and

every month they live in the home. The cost savings in the build are also a factor. Because it is built “faster” utilizing a meticulously controlled process in a weather-resistant environment, construction, materials and labor costs are kept at a minimum so the savings can be passed along to the customer. There is less waste and construction materials are recycled making this a greener way to build a home as well. All of these reasons and more are why many Sandy Victims have put their trust in the Modular Construction Process. It just does not make sense to build a home any other way these days. The Phoenix Custom Modular Homes Staff with their many years of diversified experience has a team effort philosophy when it comes to designing and building Custom Modular Homes for their clients. The three current principles of the company each are responsible for a separate part of the start to finish process. This way they can each concentrate on specific details of the build and be sure nothing falls between the cracks. In effect, a seamless process from beginning to end making the transition for their clients into their brand new home as stress free as possible. Their dedicated site crews, some who have been with them from the very beginning, are among the best in NJ. Their attention to detail and finish work is flawless.
