Lyle Moraine wrote “Christmas Island,” in 1946, and the Andrews Sisters, backed by Guy Lombardo & His Royal Canadians, turned it into a million dollar seller the same year. The song also served as the title for Jimmy Buffett’s 1996 holiday album.
Happy Holidays CHRISTMAS ISLAND Let's get away from sleigh bells, Let's get away from snow, Let's make a break some Christmas, Dear, I know the place to go. How'd ya like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island? How'd ya like to spend the holiday away across the sea? How'd ya like to spend Christmas on Christmas Island? How'd ya like to hang a stocking on a great big coconut tree? How'd ya like to stay up late like the islanders do? Wait for Santa to sail in with your presents in a canoe. If you ever spend Christmas on Christmas Island You will never stray for every day Your Christmas dreams come true. If you ever spend Christmas on Christmas Island You will never stray, for every day Your Christmas dreams come true, On Christmas Island your dreams come true. Jake’s Branch Park
8.6 miles of trails including a kid’s trail with lots of “bug” fun. Climb the ant
hill, spin in the cocoon and climb through a caterpillar. In the visitor’s center you’ll find exhibits, live animals and displays. View treetops from the top of the tower. Jake’s Branch Park is fun for the entire family. Charcoal grills and picnic tables makes it a great place for a party.

Winter Waves
Freezing wind mixed with sand and salt water pummels your face. Winter is here and the waves have changed. No longer do they calmly splash the beach while pushing happy children on their boogie boards. Now they are angry. Warning us not to approach, they are loud and aggressive. Get too close and you’ll be on the ground. Only the strong will survive. Fisherman prepare with heavy waterproof clothing. Surfers wear winter wetsuits. We are still lured to the beach but now jackets, boots, socks and hats are required. I miss hot sand between my toes. The sun is no longer burning my skin, Bathing suits and flip flops are tucked away for a long winter’s sleep. Summer is over. It is time to adjust to the harsh weather. I stand watching the waves crash with tremendous force to travel far up the beach and quickly race back to the ocean. Just amazing. Early sunsets make me so sleepy. How I stayed up so late all summer long, I just don’t know! I now have so much spare time on my hands. My store is open on weekends but all week I have very little to do. Watching the moon rise, taking long walks and snapping photos fill my time. I should love the winter but the cold ruins the fun of lazy days. I’d love to have this free time to lay on the beach but it is just too cold.
Moon rise in Beach Haven, photo by Lisa Ball Winter does have it’s advantages! The traffic lights are blinking and the speed limit is raised to 45 miles per hour. Restaurants have plenty of tables for us locals to sit and eat. Supermarkets have parking spots close to the door. And holiday shopping is relaxing. The Jersey Shore is a wonderful place to visit in the winter. Hotel rates are lower so take a trip down the shore and relax. -Lisa
Island Beach State Park Beach Shacks In 1945 the National Monument committee was formed. This agency attempted to purchase Island Beach State Park for the National Park service. Despite the support of President Herbert Hoover, the agency was unable to secure funding for purchasing the land. The State of New Jersey eventually purchased the property in 1953 for the price of 2.7 million dollars.
Model A Beach Buggy Photos courtesy of Ed Steinberg In 1926, Henry Phipps, Andrew Carnegie's partner in Pittsburgh steel, purchased the Island Beach State Park property. He planned to create an exclusive summer resort and managed to have three homes built: the Ocean House, the Bay House and the Freeman House. The stock market crash brought an end to his development ideas. Phipps died in 1930 and Island Beach was left under the watchful eye of the estate foreman, Francis Freeman. In 1933 Freeman, his wife, and retired Coast guard captain, Joseph Tilton, created the Borough of Island Beach. Each assumed multiple roles: Freeman was Fire Chief, head of the Board of Education and Mayor while his wife was Borough clerk, Tax Collector, and Borough Registrar. Tilton and the two Freemans met twice a month to govern the borough. They also managed Phipps Barnegat Bay and Beach Company which issued passes to visitors and administered nearly 100 land leases. Freeman's rules were simple: “Leave the flowers and don't annoy the osprey.” When the state purchased the area the existing leases were honored with the stipulation that once the original owner dies the lease would revert back to the state. During World War II the Island Beach State Park property was evacuated, except for the Freemans. They remained to manage the borough and a Coast Guard detail was assigned to patrol the area's beaches. In 1945 scientists from John Hopkins University came to Island Beach to test the world's first supersonic anti-aircraft missile. The test launch, as part of the Operation Bumblebee program, was a success and was important in the early development of rocket propelled weaponry.
When Governor Driscoll accepted the deed from Phipps' heirs, he stated: “Island Beach is unique. It is a jewel. There is nothing like it anywhere on earth.” The park opened in 1959 under the Department of Conservation and Economic Development. It is currently managed by the Division of Parks and Forestry under the Department of Environmental Protection. Island Beach is currently one of the most popular state parks in New Jersey and attracts approximately one million visitors every year. http://www.islandbeachnj.org/
Living in a beach shack is a romantic thought until you start thinking a bit deeper as to the reality of summer in a shack! Back in the early ‘30’s just after the depression, squatters would move right into these summer houses. Owners had a tough time getting them out or getting rent money from them. Squatters would hunt and fish for food out of necessity. There were over 100 little shacks at that time. Many had outhouses and well water. Horseflies and mosquitoes were quite a nuisance.

Feast of the Seven Fishes The Feast of the Seven Fishes is part of the Italian-American Christmas Eve celebration, although it’s not called by this name in Italy and is not a “feast” in the stricter sense of “holiday,” but a grand meal. Strictly speaking, Christmas Eve is a vigil or fasting day, and the abundance of seafood reflects the tradition of abstinence from red meat until the actual feast of Christmas Day itself.
Today, it is a meal that typically consists of seven different seafood dishes. It originates, however, from Southern Italy, where it is known simply as The Vigil (La Vigilia). This celebration commemorates the wait, the Vigilia di Natale, for the midnight birth of the baby Jesus.

How to Play Dreidel
1. Any number of people can take part.
2. Each player begins the game with an equal number of game pieces (about 10-15) such as pennies, nuts, chocolate chips, raisins, matchsticks, etc. 3. At the beginning of each round, every participant puts one game piece into the center “pot.” In addition, every time the pot is empty or has only one game piece left, every player should put one in the pot. 4. Every time it’s your turn, spin the dreidel once. Depending on the side it lands on, you give or get game pieces from the pot. 5. If you find that you have no game pieces left, you are either “out” or may ask a fellow player for a “loan.” 6. When one person has won everything, that round of the game is over! BeachLife Magazine • Dec July 2016 14
a) Nun means “nisht” or “nothing.” The player does nothing. b) Gimel means “gantz” or “everything.” The player gets everything in the pot. c) Hey means “halb” or “half.” The player gets half of the pot. (If there is an odd number of pieces in the pot, the player takes half of the total plus one). d) Shin (outside of Israel) means “shtel” or “put in.” Peh (in Israel) also means “put in.” The player adds a game piece to the pot. How do kites fly?
There are four forces acting on a kite: tension, gravity, lift and drag. Tension is the force between the string and the kite. As you hold the string you’ll feel tension as the kite wants to fly away. Gravity is pulling the kite to the ground. Wind is what causes lift. Air will pass over the top of the kite faster than air passing under the kite
causing the air pressure above the kid to be less than the pressure below the kite. This lower pressure will cause the kite to move upwards. Drag is air resistance on the kite. It is friction from the air. If the sum of lift and drag is greater than the sum of tension and gravity, the kite flies upward! -Lisa

Cleaning sails with just a spray of water and a light brush will preserve them without harming their durability. Soaps are not recommended. Dry sails indoors because UV rays are harmful to Dacron and nylon. Repair any torn spots. When storing sails, make sure that they will be protected from rodents. Dacron sailcloth is a favorite mouse snack, and they will chew little ragged holes all through your sail without a safeguard. There are two good options to prevent this: first, suspend your sail bags from a height, like rafters of a garage. Or sprinkle mothballs inside your sail bag. For foolproof protection, do both.

At the North Pole, the polar night begins as the Sun sets around the Autumnal (Fall) Equinox in September. It lasts for about 6 months until the Sun rises again around the Vernal (Spring) Equinox in March when 6 months of Polar Day / Midnight Sun begin. -Lisa

Freezing Temps
Fresh water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit but seawater freezes at about 28.4 degrees F, because of the salt in it. When seawater freezes, however, the ice contains very little salt because only the water part freezes. It can be melted down to use as drinking water. Ocean water off of New Jersey stays pretty warm all winter because of the currents. Constant flowing water from warm southern surface water mixes with our colder water raising the temperature. The motion of the ocean helps keep the temperature around 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. The bay will freeze if the area is shallow and the air temperature is cold enough. Deep channels rarely freeze.
Snow Day
Snow on the beach is a spectacular sight. Whiter than the sand, it covers the dunes in fluffy piles. Wind blows powdery snow into high drifts. Some areas have no snow at all yet other areas have swirled circular

Sparkling Tinsel
The frozen bay looks so odd. I always feel like I’m looking at a faraway place because I associate the beach and bay as a summer place. It is almost magical to see the snow on the water with broken ice where the deep channel water keeps moving. Everything takes on a blueish hue and you can see your breath. It’s beautiful but also curious. How thick is the ice? Will it break if I stand on it? I’ve heard stories that people walked across the bay in the winter. But our winters never seem to get cold enough for that. Every once in a while, when it stays really cold for days, I get to watch ice sailing. But it is not that often. Will it get cold again or has global warming forever changed our winter?
Christmas Tree Ornaments reached America around 1880. F.W. Woolworth, an American retailer first sold imported glass ornaments in his shop. Decorations also included cut outs of old magazines, cotton, wools and tinsel.
Tinsel made its first appearance in Germany in and around 1610. The early tinsels were made of real silver. Machines were invented to pull out silver into very thin strips. The Christmas tree was lighted with candles and tinsel both on the Christmas Day and Christmas Eve. Though silver is a durable metal, it got tarnished quickly with candlelight and the blackened tinsels were not a pretty sight. Efforts were made to find a substitute. During this time Christmas trees were embellished with wafers, candies, fruits, paper flowers and hard cookies baked in various shapes. During the 1800’s the hand cast glass ornaments became widely popular. Lauscha in Germany was the hub of glass ornaments production in Germany. Later on silk, wool thread, chenille and stiff spun glass were used in Christmas tree ornaments.
The First World War disrupted natural commerce and necessitated the production of cheaper ornaments made with new technologies. The introduction of injection plastic molding facilitated manufacturing of tiny figure miniatures.
Cell Phone Rings
to the tune of Jingle Bells
Driving through the snow, Heading for the bay, Over roads we go, Laughing all the way. Songs on cell phones ring, Making spirits bright, What fun it is to laugh and sing, In the car tonight. OH..cell phone rings, in the car, Lighting up so bright, O what fun our ringtones are, Down the shore tonight.

Satisfied this Christmas? by Pastor Luke Fraser
Island Baptist Church 215 3rd St., Beach Haven, NJ
hopeoflbi.com
Island Baptist Church (IBC) held its first worship service just over 40 years ago in what was then, the Colonial Theatre in Beach Haven. Since 1976, IBC has remained committed to a solitary mission – proclaiming the Good News of Salvation offered through Jesus Christ. This Christmas, IBC aims to fill every seat with new attendees, each one eager to grow in their understanding of God’s will for their life. If that’s you, then IBC invites you to join them each Sunday at 10am. Pastor Luke Fraser, IBC’s newly appointed zealous young preacher says, “This Christmas, my hope is to help people discover what the Bible says about being satisfied in life. It’s impossible to live a satisfied life, a life of total fulfillment where every thirst has been quenched, apart from knowing why you were put on this earth.” This pastor’s journey in life and search for truth might just sound a lot like yours. After years of searching for satisfaction, Luke Fraser found himself sinking deeper into depression, unsure of how to escape the nagging inner voice that kept urging him to give up trying. “For years I put on a façade,” says Luke. “From the outside looking in, you would never have guessed that I was starving to death. I looked like the epitome of health, success, happiness, etc. but inside, I was searching for something that could quench that deep inner longing.” In a sermon from this past year, Luke asked his congregation, “Have you ever longed for something? I’m not talking about the feeling you get while sitting in church the morning you decided to skip breakfast, trying to hide the sound of your stomach growling, dreaming of the giant sandwich you plan to eat, counting the minutes until the service is over. Nor am I referring to the anticipation you feel on Friday afternoons with one hour remaining before the weekend. No, the state of mind I’m asking about is birthed out of a deeper place within the soul – the place where the most

insatiable appetite is housed. Try as we may to satisfy this hunger and silence its growling with food, drink, money, sex, incessant entertainment, and more of the like, every human being ultimately finds this sort of endless pursuit to be in vain. Just ask Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived about what he discovered in his pursuit of the pleasures of this world – “Meaningless! Meaningless!”…”Everything is meaningless!” (Ecc.1:2). Through a personal inner-agony brought about by living the life of a counterfeit, a fake, an inauthentic person, and reaping the consequences of such a life, I’ve discovered along with Solomon, that the endless pursuit of the fortunes offered through the “American Dream” leave a man empty, even if he should find himself stubborn enough to acquire it. For much of my young-adult life, I pursued lesser “treasures” only to discover their worthlessness. At the end of the path leading to the plain, unsatisfying, subordinate pleasures of the American Dream, waits God, offering Himself in the Person of His Son as the ultimate object of our affection. He alone is capable of satisfying our deepest inner cravings. King David expressed this exact sentiment most succinctly when he wrote, “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God” (Ps.42:1). Pastor Luke says that his personal passion is to help people who’ve misplaced their sense of value. “My heart yearns to point others to discover the supreme treasure of knowing Jesus as the ultimate object of their desire. I want to lead others to discover what I have found. I thirsted deeply for answers, for love, for conviction. Earthly treasures cannot quench that deeply-rooted thirst that dwells within every human soul. Only when one drinks from the fountain of life can that thirst be quenched. – Jesus is the fountain of life. Faith in anything else is hopeless and all other pursuits offer nothing but false hope.” Luke quotes Jesus Himself who said, “I am

the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” – John 6:35 Island Baptist Church loves LBI. Their sincere desire is to see hope rise this Christmas as they open their doors to residents of Beach Haven and the surrounding townships. The church choir has been preparing for a Christmas Eve performance followed by refreshments and a time to connect with others in the church. At age 38, Pastor Luke Fraser delivers vibrant, passionate Gospel messages week after week to a people hungry for God’s Word. “You’ll be amazed at how friendly these people are,” said Luke, “come see for yourself!” Year-round Sunday services are held weekly at 10am. The church is located at 215 3rd St. in Beach Haven, just around the corner from Fred’s Beach Haven Diner. Use index cards to write notes to yourself. They are easy to carry with you and much more sturdy than a scrap of paper. Throw things out. It may be hard to do at first but after a few bags it gets easier. Instead of thinking that you may use that old tennis racket that you haven’t used in 15 years, give it away. I had this attachment to my racket and still thought of it as “new”... but it’s not. It is at least 20 years old. It was new to me because I rarely used it. It is time to let it go along with bags and bags of other stuff that I don’t use anymore. Get rid of the old to make room for the new.
