Did you know? Seahorses have no teeth or stomach. They must eat constantly to stay alive.

Seahorses are not strong swimmers. They beat their fins very quickly, up to 50 times a second and move very slowly. They breathe using gills, have a swim bladder to control their buoyancy.

There are 53 species of seahorses They range in size from 0.6” to 14”

Seahorses have a complex courtship ritual and may form a bond that lasts during the entire breeding season. The courtship involving a “dance” where they entwine their tails, and may change colors.

Male seahorses are equipped with a brood pouch on their ventral, or front-facing, side. When mating, the female deposits her eggs into his pouch, and the male fertilizes them internally. He carries the eggs in his pouch until they hatch, then releases fully formed, miniature seahorses into the water.

Some ways you can help save seahorses are not purchasing souvenir seahorses and not using seahorses in your aquarium. BeachLife.online

Summer Bird Feeding

Summertime is a great time to feed birds. You may see different birds at your feeders during summer than you do during winter. And many, such as finches and warblers, may sport their vibrant spring and summer plumage spreading color throughout your yard!

For much of North America summertime is a great time to see hummingbirds and other nectar-eating birds. Hummingbirds are frequent feeder visitors because they eat nearly half their weight in nectar every day!

You’ll also be in for a treat when woodpeckers, bluebirds, and other nesting birds bring their babies to your feeders to teach them how to eat at the feeder. The young fledglings put on such a show! Remember, birds only supplement their diet up to 10 to 20 percent at feeders. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office of Bird Management states: “If you enjoy feeding the birds, there is no reason to stop feeding the birds in the summer. You can do it year round. Feeding the birds in the summer will not make them lazy or too dependant.” The Cornell Lab of Ornithology scientists state; “ Keep the restaurant open year round and offer a variety of seeds and suet.” Talk with our Certified Bird Feeding Specialists about the many ways you can enjoy feeding the birds in summer and all year long!

Dolphin Facts

To prevent drowning while sleeping only half of the dolphin’s brain goes to sleep while the other half remains awake so they can continue to breathe! Most dolphins live long lives. The bottlenose dolphin can live over 40 years, and the orca can live to be 70 or 80! A dolphin’s dorsal fin is as distinctive as a person’s face. Thanks to a very sensitive retina that efficiently gathers light, a dolphin can see as well beneath the water as above it. Dolphins swallow fish whole, despite the 100 teeth in their mouths. The teeth are used to grasp prey. A dolphin’s skin is extremely delicate and easily injured by rough surfaces — much like human skin. Unlike any other mammals, dolphin babies are born tail first.

Barnegat Light Historical Society Museum and the Edith Duff Gwinn Gardens 5th Street and Central Avenue Barnegat Light, NJ 08006

The Barnegat Light Historical Society Museum proudly displays the original Fresnal lens that once graced the top of the Barnegat Lighthouse. It also has many photographs of Barnegat City (Barnegat Light) during the first half of the twentieth century. The Museum building was originally the schoolhouse in which early town children received their elementary education from its construction in 1903 through the last class on June 15, 1951. The building was opened as a museum for the town of Barnegat Light in 1954. Members of the Barnegat Light Historical Society maintain the exhibits and staff the museum, while the Garden Club of Long Beach Island lovingly cares for the Edith Duff Gwinn Garden.

Photos by Lisa Ball

One of the major features in the museum is the First Order Flashing Lens from the Barnegat Light Lighthouse, build by the French Physicist Augustin Fresnel. It was capable of throwing its light 20 miles or more to the horizon. Construction of the present lighthouse began in 1857 and was completed in 1858. The lens was removed in 1927 when the Barnegat Lightship took up station off Barnegat Inlet. The lens was sent to the Tompkinsville Lighthouse Depot on Staten Island, New York. In 1954, the lens was returned to the town of Barnegat Light and now is on exhibit in the museum.

How does a Frensel Lens Work?

Barnegat Light Lighthouse

The basic idea behind a Fresnel lens is simple. Imagine taking a plastic magnifying glass lens and slicing it into a hundred concentric rings (like the rings of a tree). Each ring is slightly thinner than the next and focuses the light toward the center. Now take each ring, modify it so that it's flat on one side, and make it the same thickness as the others. To retain the rings' ability to focus the light toward the center, the angle of each ring's angled face will be different. Now if you stack all the rings back together, you have a Fresnel lens. You can make the lens extremely large if you like. Large Fresnel lenses are often used as s olar concentrators.

Lisa Ball

The original lighthouse began in June 1834 but by the 1850s the original lighthouse needed to be replaced because of erosion. The new lighthouse was built four time higher that the original with a much brighter frensnel lens. The lighthouse’s beacon remained a first-class navigational light until August 1927, when the Barnegat Lightship was anchored 8 nautical miles (9.2 mi) off the coast. This prompted the automation and replacement of the first-order lens with a gas blinker. As a result, the tower’s light was reduced by over 80 percent. The gas blinker was replaced several weeks later with a 250watt electric bulb. The gas apparatus can still be seen at the top of the tower. The light was deactivated as a Coast Guard lookout tower in January 1944 and given to the State of New Jersey. Four years later, the local municipality, Barnegat City, renamed itself Barnegat Light. In 1954, the lens was returned to the borough of Barnegat Light and is now on exhibit in the Barnegat Light Museum. The area around the lighthouse was declared a state park and dedicated in 1957. The lightship was removed in 1969. BeachLife Magazine • July 2016 14

morning just as he did that fateful day in 1991. So, when the “Egg” quickly outgrew its shell, Bill and the rest of the regulars followed Mark, Craig and crew across the street to a new location in 1993. The bigger venue afforded a bigger menu which continues to grow today.

Our Story The Chicken or the Egg first opened its doors on Memorial Day Weekend, 1991. The idea was hatched by a few hungry, adventurous young men with big dreams and empty pockets. The original “Egg” was a small but quaint little luncheonette located next-door to the Beach Haven landmark ” Bill’s Barber Shop.” And even though Bill “Scrimmer the Trimmer” has since retired, his legend lives on at The Chicken or the Egg’s current location. Bill’s original sign hangs inside the restaurant as a constant reminder of its humble beginnings and the importance of customer service. Bill still eats breakfast at the “Egg” every

When we boast that there is something for everyone, it’s not without merit. There are classic items and ones that are completely original and unique. And then there are the wings… A lot of places talk a good buffalo wing, but the “Chegg” as it is now commonly known, truly delivers. The wings are big, juicy and available in 16 sauces, both Original Breaded, or Naked. The Chicken or the Egg has become know locally and Nationally for these big beauties. And best of all, the whole menu (breakfast too) is available 24 hours a day (in season). But for us, it’s not just about the food. It’s about family. It’s about camaraderie. It’s about good times. So come on in and join the family. Join the fun. You’ll be happy you did. Oh, and sorry about the lines. People dig us. But it’ s worth the wait.

Clam Chowder Quick

Mix cream of celery soup, cream of potato soup, clam chowder, 1 can undrained clams, 1 can drained clams, half-and-half cream, and whipping cream into a slow cooker.

Cover, and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours.

Clam Anatomy A clam’s shell consists of two

(usually equal) halves, which are connected by a hinge joint and a ligament which can be external or internal, much like a Venus Flytrap. In clams, two adductor muscles contract to close the shells. The clam has no head, and usually has no eyes, (scallops are a notable exception), but a clam does have kidneys, a heart, a mouth, and an anus. Clams, like most molluscs, also have open circulatory systems, which means that their organs are surrounded by watery blood that contains nutrients and oxygen.

Clams feed on plankton by filter feeding. Clams filter feed by drawing in water containing food using an incurrent siphon. The food is then filtered out of the water by the gills and swept toward the mouth on a layer of mucus. The water is then expelled from the animal by an excurrent siphon.

Clam Strips The edible portion of a clam is the foot (belly), which is normally cut into strips, breaded and fried - “Clam Strips.” The salvage, primarily the adductor muscles are ground up for use in chowders, sauces, and dips. When eating fried clam strips and a piece is very tough and chewy it’s probably an adductor muscle or piece of the mantle.

Phoenix Custom Modular Homes was created when two of its principals, with over 50 years of experience in the manufactured housing industry in NJ, decided to combine forces and form a company. Their company Mission was simple - build “Quality” Energy Efficient “Custom” Modular Homes in the State of New Jersey. Homes they would be proud to move into themselves! The main goal inside this mission was to create a pleasant experience for their customers during the process of building their dream home; one they would be sure to tell their friends, neighbors, colleagues and family about. With this philosophy, the business would not only grow but would survive even in the toughest of markets because of truly satisfied customers. At Phoenix Custom Modular Homes, it is all about the customer! It all started in 1996 with the first home on a lagoon in Chadwick Beach Island. This home, a strong survivor of Hurricane Sandy, is one of the many reasons there is so much interest in Modular Construction today. Putting a home up in the air on pilings that is constructed with more wood than a typical site built structure and building it with 2”x6” outer walls (typical site built uses 2”x 4”) makes for a more sound structure. These 2”x 6” outer walls allow for a higher R-Value of insulation as well making the structure more energy efficient and saving the homeowner money each and

every month they live in the home. The cost savings in the build are also a factor. Because it is built “faster” utilizing a meticulously controlled process in a weather-resistant environment, construction, materials and labor costs are kept at a minimum so the savings can be passed along to the customer. There is less waste and construction materials are recycled making this a greener way to build a home as well. All of these reasons and more are why many Sandy Victims have put their trust in the Modular Construction Process. It just does not make sense to build a home any other way these days. The Phoenix Custom Modular Homes Staff with their many years of diversified experience has a team effort philosophy when it comes to designing and building Custom Modular Homes for their clients. The three current principles of the company each are responsible for a separate part of the start to finish process. This way they can each concentrate on specific details of the build and be sure nothing falls between the cracks. In effect, a seamless process from beginning to end making the transition for their clients into their brand new home as stress free as possible. Their dedicated site crews, some who have been with them from the very beginning, are among the best in NJ. Their attention to detail and finish work is flawless. Gone Fishing Bunker

B

unker is one of the best baits to use when fishing for striped bass. Cut the bunker into chunks. Don’t use the tail. Use the head and the rest of the fish. Some of the biggest striped bass have been caught on bunker heads. If really large stripers are around you can use the whole bunker for bait. Bunker is the name given to Atlantic Menhaden. Menhaden range from Nova Scotia to Eastern Florida. They can be found in coastal estuaries outwards to the continental shelf. Menhaden are filter feeders, straining microscopic plankton, algae, etc. from the water as they swim. Due to their feeding habits, they must be caught by a cast net, or snagged using a weighted treble hook. They will never bite a baited hook. Adult menhaden average 12 to 15 inches in length, and from two-thirds to one pound in weight. The menhaden spawn in the open ocean. Their eggs are buoyant and don’t hatch for about 75 days. Eggs and larvae wash into coastal bays and estuaries which provide nurseries for the menhaden. In the fall, after they have grown to peanut bunker size, they migrate out into the ocean in sizeable schools which attract gamefish like striped bass and bluefish. Blitzes seen along the coast are many times due to striped bass and bluefish feeding on the schools of menhaden. Menhaden are the main source of protein for striped bass.

Squid Squid, ‘calamari’, ‘clean’, ‘dirty’, ‘unwashed’ and ‘loligo’ can be used at bait. The squid which is most commonly available to anglers is sold with the intention of being used as food and can be known as clean squid. This may be bought from fish counters at supermarkets or fishmongers, or sold in frozen blocks. The reason this squid is known as clean squid is because it is cleaned and washed soon after being caught either on board the vessel which catches the squid or at a processing plant on shore. Dirty or unwashed squid is squid (of any species) has not been cleaned or processed in any way. Some anglers prefer using dirty squid in the belief that the washing and processing of squid removes the scent and juices which attract fish. Clean squid is sometimes referred to as calamari and dirty squid as loligo. This is because calamari is a generic culinary term for any species of squid intended for human consumption and the Loligo vulgaris species is often, but not always, the species sold as dirty squid. There is much debate in the

Clam The best clams are Live Clams “skimmer”, they measure about 4 to 5 inches long in the shell. They can be purchased from a bait and tackle shops. (Clams purchased from bait shops are not for human consumption).

angling community about the ‘clean vs. dirty’ with some anglers claiming increased catch rates with dirty squid. However, it is important to remember that clean squid has been used as an sea fishing bait for years and has certainly accounted for a large number of big fish over the years. There is unlikely to ever be a definitive answer to the ‘clean vs. dirty’ debate and both varieties of squid are likely to account for decent catches in the future.
