An Unapologetic Voice
I was driving upstate to our farm the day after welcoming my sixty sixth birthday. Someone was being interviewed on one of the radio stations. While deftly maneuvering my way through weekday Bergen County highway traffic, I half-heard her say that women should break a few more rules. I am certain that statement was part of a conversation that had been started before I tuned in; taken out of context any statement can seem absurd. But, I turned off the radio, settled back to enjoy the thinning stream of cars as I merged onto the thruway upstate and began my own inner dialog about obeying rules, following Free Estimates the law, and living one’s most righteous life, regardless of gender--or age or race or profession or religion or political Fully Insured party affiliation or any category in which we may identify Lic #13VH077200 ourselves--or be labeled by others.
609-618-6553
I had a wonderful time thinking of my own list of rules to live by. And, August 16th was a wonderful time to figure it out. It didn’t take me very long. I only need two, the same two I have worked on for a lifetime--as I take care to not mistake a rationalization for a reason. Or ideology for behavior. My two rules are:
Dennis.Sweeney66@gmail.com Little Egg Harbor, NJ 08087 **The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you wish they would do unto you.
**Live and let live: I must carry not, the history of the world’s imperfections as a justification for my plight or the reason for my good fortune. I must live my best life, so that when it is over, I have helped, somehow. Oh, yes....there is one more: Hair . Nails . Make Up . Weddings
** Two wrongs don’t make a right.

Be Happy
Lisa Ball
It’s the little things that make us happy. Perhaps that’s why Facebook is filled with babies, puppies and kittens. We immediately smile when we see a baby laugh or a puppy trying to howl for the first time. We love new beginnings. Ah, how cute it is to watch a baby taking those first steps and listen to those first words. It represents a new beginning. Fresh new hope. The dream of the future. Life is truly amazing. Constantly growing and changing. Babies and puppies grow at an accelerated pace. You have to continually watch or you’ll miss it. Need a pick-me-up? Tune into YouTube and watch a baby laugh! Be Happy.

Nourishing Thoughts The morning I learned that Marilyn Monroe had died was one of those moments that scratched the core of my soul. I loved her iconic beauty--her soft voice, her disheveled hair, her thick lips, her sleepy eyes. Her body gave me permission to dare to enjoy a feminine softness and curviness that was not acceptable when I gazed at then popular fashion models who dictated how one’s body should look--skeletal, barely a women. The likes of Twiggy. Remember? Human clothes hangers. That hot summer day in August, just ten days before I was to turn fourteen, the news swept through the upstate summer bungalow colony like a midsummer storm; all the women seemed to freeze on the lawn that sultry afternoon and wept. About to enter high school, new to the search for the perfect body and head of hair and, of course, attractiveness to boys --I felt an inexplicable betrayal. She had everything I wanted! How was it possible that she could be found dead--with a vial of pills close by? I begged my parents to buy the Daily News and the New York Mirror, so that I could learn more. Understand better. I asked my trusted father how it could be that someone rich, famous, adored--and gorgeous--could end so sadly. His answer fell on the ears of a burgeoning young woman, beset with her own vague doubts and shapeless insecurities, “Judel, no one is immune from the hole in the soul; externals can never fill it.” I had no idea what my father meant, then. But, I remember scouting about for a different “model” to follow. Some five decades later, one of my cherished actors has recently died. A devoted teacher, I have watched his films again and again. Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting and Jacob the Liar. When I have needed to touch the essence of hope. The gift of healing. The core of self-love. The will to persevere against evil--in others and ourselves. These films have always made me weep. They are even more poignant, now. We all need models who fashion their lives, not on earning lofty accolades or mammoth public approval; we need to find a model who carries an invisible shield against the tyranny of the masses and an understanding that we all have a “hole in the soul” that yearns to be filled with what only a healthy person has the insight to help us learn to do: fill it with who we are--in the dark and in the empty and in the still--not merely in the spotlight and under scrutiny of the public eye. I am lucky. “If everybody loves me, where are they tonight?” (Sweetheart on Parade)--Judy Collins Written by Judy Horowitz www.senoraonline.com

Pet Tip
It’s back-to-school time, and those of you with young children know that means stocking up on fun items like glue sticks, pencils and magic markers. These items are considered “low toxicity” to pets, which means they’re unlikely to cause serious problems unless large amounts are ingested. However, since gastrointestinal upset and blockages certainly are possible, be sure your children keep their school supplies out of paw’s reach.
Just Ask Judy Dear Judy, I am the daughter of a “holiday hoarder”. Throughout my life--particularly in the fall--my mom couldn’t buy enough door decorations, tree ornaments, and lights, even though she couldn’t possibly use all that she had accumulated through the decades. We lived in a modest apartment. Oddly, I find myself doing the same. The closets and my garage are crowded with enough tubs and cardboard boxes to decorate an entire community of lawns, windows, and porches. Nevertheless, year after year I perpetuate the pattern of excessive buying for the holidays. I want to stop this madness. October seems like a great time to begin. I knew I needed to change when I bought yet another “adorable” scarecrow the day after Labor Day! I knew I was in real trouble when I also bought-and ate--a bag of Halloween candy on the same day. Thank you for reaching out with a common and oddly persistent pattern many of us face around the beginning of the holiday season. Summer has grown into an old memory, leaves fall, flowers lose their luster, and darkness comes earlier in the evening. A long winter looms ahead, and many of us wish to comfort ourselves with buying for the holidays. Objects will never fill a hole which can only be filled with peaceful acceptance and joyful appreciation of what we have. I suggest that you take immediate inventory of your Halloween stash. Whatever does not make you giddy with joy, give to any thrift shop. Someone will love what no longer excites you. What remains should be placed in a storage tub. Any space that is left can be filled. (The same should be done with the next two months of accumulation.) What does not live in its own “holiday” tub, lives in someone else’s home. Period. As for the treats, most stores should be open on Halloween Day! Wishing you a winning outcome, judy
