“Home of the Cheese Balls”

Just Ask Darla

Dear Darla,

Summer has just begun and the same old fight between me and my husband is starting again. He needs air conditioning as soon as the temperature hits 75 °. I love fresh air. I don’t care how hot it gets. I love a breeze and I love to hear the birds and other sounds of summer. How do we resolve this? We can’t have another summer of arguing. chillin’ by the beach Dear Chillin’,

Compromise is the secret ingredient behind any lasting friendship or successful marriage. Perhaps, during the hottest days of summer the air can be on and on cooler days, open the windows. You will both appreciate summer and each other more.

I wish you luck, Darla

Motivation

I’m so distracted. Gorgeous days, warm nights and the beach practically outside my window make it harder and harder to get started with my day’s chores. I make my list and check off so little by day’s end. Where does the day go? I wake up earlier and earlier because I don’t want to miss a minute of each day. I need to spend more time on the beach. I’ve been working too much and I’m feeling the effects. After analyzing my past few days, I’ve noticed that I could be much more efficient with my time. If I plan my day with my natural rhythm, I’ll be able to finish each day’s work. First thing I do is make a list. I list the items by priority. Then, I group them by location. I prefer to do all my computer work in the morning. Email is read, articles are written and my design work is completed before noon. By then, I need to get out of the house so I schedule my appointments for afternoons. My favorite time of the day at the beach is after 4 PM. So, I will schedule that in. Any work that still needs to be completed can be done after dinner. Write down what needs to be done each day. Prioritize the list Group items Check off finished chores Lisa Ball Relax

Every now and then, I feel down. Mostly on rainy days but sadness can find you any day of the week, rain or shine. What makes us sad? For me, it is when I feel forgotten. My friends tell me their problems but don’t often ask me how I feel. They wrap themselves in drama and tell me all about it. I try to keep my life drama free and as a result, I’m happier. So, for me to constantly listen to another person’s problems I need to muster a lot of energy and sheer will not to be sucked in to their tunnel of woe. Everyone knows that misery like company. I prefer to rest on a cloud of gratitude, instead. Care to share my cloud with me? There is always room for one more with hope. Lisa Ball

A Crappie Story

One of my son’s favorite moments of the school week in second grade was “Share and Tell” on Monday mornings. One early June weekend, Bryan, his uncle Ralph and his dad had gone fishing. Bryan was thrilled; they had caught three crappie fish. He proudly told his story to his classmates. They listened with rapt attention until the name of the fish was mentioned. After the laughter subsided, his teacher announced that Bryan had detention that day.

Be Happy

Bryan came out of school, weeping. He explained what had happened. The following morning, furious, I visited with his teacher after the pledge of allegiance had been recited. I definitively let her know that “crappie” was not a bad word. I also let her know that an adult’s ignorance should never hurt a child--in school or anywhere else. The following day, Bryan came home from school happy. His teacher had apologized to the class...and every child was given an individual bag of Sweedish Fish. judy horowitz

Getting rid of the Mold “As New Jerseyans continue to rebuild and recover from Superstorm Sandy, mold and its remediation have become a challenging issue for many residents and communities. It can cause property damage and be a health concern when it grows inside homes and is not properly dealt with. Exposure to mold can cause coughing or wheezing as well as irritation of the eyes, nose, throat and skin. To help homeowners ensure that their residences are cleaned and remediated properly, the New Jersey Department of Health created and released a pamphlet entitled Mold: Guidelines for New Jersey Residents.” This pamphlet can help residents identify mold in their homes. If a problem is identified during a visual inspection, a plan to correct the moisture problem will need to be developed and implemented. Residents can receive copies of the pamphlet by visiting nj.gov/health/er/hurricane_recovery_ resources.shtml or calling (609) 826-4950. Residents can also call the same number to speak with the Department’s Environmental and Occupation Health Assessment Program staff about questions they may have regarding mold inspection or removal.

Being from Toms River, I pretty much kept to Seaside Heights and Island Beach State Park on those hot summer days and crazy summer nights of my youth. Beautiful beaches, captivating sunsets, salty sea air, cute shops, local artists and people everywhere and the reason for my existence... FRESH SEAFOOD! Okay, you got me. I’m a foodie! Buttery Lobster, seared scallops, fresh fish, creamy calamari, mussels in marinara, oyster shooters, shrimp cocktail and my absolute to die for--Barnegat Bay Clams!!! I can eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner-and I have. No, I’m not lying. Oh, and let’s not forget the midnight snack with a Piña Colada. Don’t even try to tell me you don’t know what I’m talking about. How about raw clams on the half shell with a drop of hot sauce. Wait--I know, you like a squeeze of lemon! Let’s see, steamed on the Bar-B; now we’re talking. MY favorite since you’re asking, is cooked in garlic, butter, parsley and more garlic-served with toasty bread...wait, make that toasty garlic bread. You know where I’m going, right? Soaking up that delicious broth with it-- Oh My God! Or for you facebook people, OMG! Damn, I’m getting hungry! Then, there’s clam chowder -some of the best in the world right here at the Jersey Shore. Beautiful views, friendly people, fresh seafood and the feeling of summer on the Jersey Shore. Kim

Easy Parmesan Knots Ingredients

Say what? Happy as a Clam Why would clams be happy? It has been suggested that open clams give the appearance of smiling. The derivation is more likely to come from the fuller version of the phrase, now rarely heard - ‘as happy as a clam at high water’. High tide is when clams are free from the attentions of predators; surely, that is the happiest of times in the bivalve mollusc world.

Batten Down the Hatches! “Hatch” is a word with multiple meanings. In this context, we refer to the opening in the deck of a ship. The hatch of a ship, more formally called hatchway, was once commonplace on sailing ships and were normally either open or covered with a wooden grating to allow for ventilation of the lower decks. When bad weather was imminent, the hatches were covered with tarpaulin and the covering was edged with wooden strips, known as battens, to prevent the tarp from blowing off. Not surprisingly, sailors called this “battening down’”

1 tube (12 ounces) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits ( I used Pillsbury Golden Layers Refrigerated Buttermilk Biscuits) ¼ cup canola oil 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese (I did use the green can stuff) ½ teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes Instructions Roll each biscuit into a 12-in. rope and tie into a knot; tuck ends under. Place 2 in. apart on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 400° for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. In a large bowl, combine the remaining ingredients; brush the warm knots with the mixture. Yield:10 knots.

Nourishing Thoughts Endings used to be excruciatingly difficult for me. Beginning something new--job, friendship, diet, school year-all held the potential for greatness. For decades, endings seemed anticlimactic; moments beset with vague regrets and misgivings. Remaining steadfast in one’s effort, mustering energy and relentless purposeful behaviors up until the final satisfying farewell following a goal reached, has always been the challenge.

An Unapologetic Voice Summer is upon us. Undeniable it is, in the sounds of birds that greet the day with predawn chant and flight. My garden, no longer frozen brown tundra, swells with fragrant flowers pruned with love alongside persistent disheveled weeds that long to grow, too. Just as we shed extraneous outerwear and a gentle breeze dances with my lace curtains by an open window, summer gently nudges us all to acknowledge that change is part of life. To let a life outgrown melt into fresh new waters. Now. I have just about completed a monumental task that began shortly after Hurricane Sandy. You can eat the petals off of any variety of rose, no matter their color or size. It is essential that they not be sprayed by pesticides to be edible. Rose petals have different flavors. Some variety of roses taste like light sweet strawberries, while others taste slightly sour or spicy. The darker the color of the rose, the stronger its flavor. www.KarmaWords.com 11
