Happy St Patricks Day
The shamrock, which
was also called the “seamroy” by the Celts, was a sacred plant in ancient Ireland because it symbolized the rebirth of spring. By the seventeenth century, the shamrock had become a symbol of emerging Irish nationalism. As the English began to seize Irish land and make laws against the use of the Irish language and the practice of Catholicism, many Irish began to wear the shamrock as a symbol of their pride in their heritage and their displeasure with English rule.
Leprechauns
The original Irish name for these figures of folklore is “lobaircin,” meaning “small-bodied fellow.” Belief in leprechauns probably stems from Celtic belief in fairies, tiny men and women who could use their magical powers to serve good or evil. In Celtic folktales, leprechauns were cranky souls, responsible for mending the shoes of the other fairies. Though only minor figures in Celtic folklore, leprechauns were known for their trickery, which they often used to protect their much-fabled treasure. Leprechauns had nothing to do with St. Patrick or the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, a Catholic holy day. In 1959, Walt Disney released a film called Darby O’Gill & the Little People, which introduced America to a very different sort of leprechaun than the cantankerous little man of Irish folklore. This cheerful, friendly leprechaun is a purely American invention, but has quickly evolved into an easily recognizable symbol of both St. Patrick’s Day and Ireland in general.

A Day With Dennis

esterday I woke up feeling lousy. I wanted to turn off my phone, sink my head in my pillow and watch movies that make you cry all day. But something miraculous happened, my grandson Dennis came over. He is almost two, full of smiles and devilish grins that make my heart burst with love. I jumped out of bed, played cars and dinosaurs for an hour, then spent time reading Sesame Street and Dr. Seuss books. We made Mac & Cheese, threw Cheerios in the air to catch in our mouth and finally relaxed to SpongeBob on TV. When his Daddy came to pick him up, he hugged and kissed me goodbye with sleepy eyes and sticky fingers. After he left as I bent over picking up toys and cereal off the matter how bad a day begins with a carpet -I couldn’t help but smile. Just goes to show you, no little love it can end up wonderful. he origins of the bagpipe can be traced back to the most ancient civilizations. The bagpipe probably originated as a rustic instrument in many cultures because a herdsman had the necessary materials at hand: a goat or sheep skin and a reed pipe. Bagpipes have always been made in many shapes and sizes, and have been played throughout Europe from before the Norman Conquest until the present day. Medieval pipes usually had a single drone - see contemporary illustrations of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales for English single-drone pipes. Around 1400 (give or take 50 years), most shepherd-style pipes acquired a second drone. A third drone is added about after 1550. The construction of the bagpipe allows a continuous supply of air to be maintained. By squeezing the bag with his left hand while a breath is taken, the flow of air can be kept up in both the drone pipes and chanter. Other features of this instrument are the mouthpipe and the double reed of the chanter and drone. The mouthpipe contains a round piece of leather hinged onto the bag end which acts as a one way valve. As the player blows air in, the flap opens; when he stops blowing the air pressure within the bag forces the flap shut. The chanter has seven finger holes and a thumb hole, and has a usual range of an octave and one note.

I think my friend is lying. She said she has a boyfriend but I’ve never seen him. She says he lives in a different state and that is why I didn’t get to meet him yet. How do you tell if someone is lying? Pants on Fire Dear Pants on Fire, She can fool all the people some of the time and she can even fool some of the people all of the time, but she cannot fool all of the people all the time. She is bound to get caught in her lies IF she is lying. It may be true that she has this mysterious boyfriend or maybe it is only half true. Maybe she met a friend and they talk on the phone often. In her mind they are in a relationship. But in his mind they are not. She may call him and make plans to see one other but in reality he just wants to be phone friends. A sign that she is lying includes the inability to keep the story straight. She may say that he loves her and wants to marry her in the beginning of their relationship but as time goes by, she stops talking about it and may even clams up when asked questions about him. Time will tell and lies will be exposed.

pring is coming and I am so happy. I see the sun setting a little bit later every day and it makes a big difference. I NEED the sun. It is my happiness. I’ve lived with depression all of my life. Happiness does not come easy to me. I work very hard at happiness. Sunny days are mood changers. I close me eyes and turn towards the sun. I feel the warmth on my face and sunlight filters through my eyelids. I can feel the serotonin increase without taking medication! My shoulders relax, my neck stops aching everything is good again. Sunshine is a miracle. It is energy, we are also energy. Photons are emitted when an electron jumps from a higher orbit to a lower orbit. In the sun, electrons are constantly emitting photons of all wavelengths. Our body is bombarded by good and bad photons. Ultraviolet rays (UV radiation) can cause sunburn and cancer. But UV radiation is needed for Vitamin D production and is used in medical applications for treatment of psoriasis. It is no surprise that there are so many sun worshipers. The sun makes us feel great.

A tree strives to grow towards the sun, constantly branching out with roots planted deep beneath the ground.
All living plants need water and sunlight to grow. Although different species require different amounts of light, without it a plant cannot make food and does not have the energy it needs to grow. Some plants will survive nicely in filtered or indirect light because they have adapted by developing large leaves that are able to make efficient use of low levels of light. Plants absorb water through the stem and sunlight from the sky. The chloroplasts in the leaves are filled with chlorophyll which absorb sunlight. The plant uses the sunlight to combine carbon dioxide, which it takes in through tiny pores on the underside of the leaf called stomata, and water to make sugar and oxygen in a process called photosynthesis. Plants use the sugar as their food to make starches, fats and proteins. Oxygen is released into the air through the stomata. The flower is the main part of the plant that produces seeds. The flower itself uses the energy created in photosynthesis to grow and bloom. The flower does not contain chlorophyll and does not produce food for the plant. The primary function of a flower is to attract insects with its bright colors and sweet scent. Flying insects that feed on the nectar in the flower get pollen on their bodies and carry it away with them. When they feed on other flowers, some of the pollen is left behind to fertilize the flower.

Irish Soda Bread with Raisins Nonstick vegetable oil spray 2 cups all purpose flour 5 tablespoons sugar, divided 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 3 tablespoons butter, chilled, cut into cubes 1 cup buttermilk 2/3 cup raisins
Using floured hands, shape dough into ball. Transfer to prepared pan and flatten slightly (dough will not come to edges of pan). Sprinkle dough with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar. Bake bread until brown and tester inserted into center comes out clean, about 40 minutes. Cool bread in pan 10 minutes. Transfer to rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Using fingertips, rub in until coarse meal forms. Make well in center of flour mixture. Add buttermilk. Gradually stir dry ingredients into milk to blend. Mix in raisins.

Music is often associated with St. Patrick’s Day—and Irish culture in general. From ancient days of the Celts, music has always been an important part of Irish life. The Celts had an oral culture, where religion, legend and history were passed from one generation to the next by way of stories and songs. After being conquered by the English, and forbidden to speak their own language, the Irish, like other oppressed peoples, turned to music to help them remember important events and hold on to their heritage and history. As it often stirred emotion and helped to galvanize people, music was outlawed by the English. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth I even decreed that all artists and pipers were to be arrested and hanged on the spot.

Grandmother Says...Carrots, Eggs, or Coffee;

young woman went to her grandmother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose. Her grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, "Tell me what do you see?" "Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied. She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they got soft. Then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The granddaughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma. The granddaughter then asked. "What's the point,grandmother?" Her grandmother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity--boiling water--but each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However after being

subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed the water. "Which are you?" she asked her granddaughter. "When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?" Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength? Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart? Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate to another level?
