ReClam The Bay (RCTB) is a non-profit, grass roots organization that promotes environmental involvement and education in a constructive way. Our volunteers enjoy hands on experiences to help repopulate the bay with shellfish and help kids and adults understand what they can and should do to keep the environment clean and friendly. Together we grow and maintain millions of baby clams and oysters. As we grow seed clams and oysters to stock our local bay, we teach everyone how important and fragile the shellfish population and our environment really are. We are open to everyone and all are welcome to come lend a hand.
The better it is at the top... the better it is at the bottom.

The Dish on Jelly Fish By Ms. V • All jellyfish sting. Even dead ones can sting. Never touch a dead jellyfish. Most are not dangerous, but a few can be deadly. • Seawater is your best bet when treating jellyfish stings. Use seawater to wash away as much of the stinging cells as possible. Fine beach sand can also be used to gently scrub away nematocysts. The trick is to avoid applying too much pressure triggering stinging cells to fire, gently is the only way to go. • Jellyfish are invertebrates which mean they do not have a backbone. They have no brain, heart, blood or bones. Most are 95% water and some are nearly 98%. • There are more than 2,000 species of jelly fish in the world. • Its body is a gelatinous substance. They are also made up of nerves and muscles. • The jellyfish is a meat eating hunter. The tentacles dangling from the bell body are used to capture prey. • Jellyfish that live near the ocean’s Jellyfish that live deep in the ocean jellies even glow in the dark. Others blue, green, red, orange, striped and
surface are usually see-through or clear. are usually purple or red. Some deep-sea are vibrant colors such as pink, yellow, often luminescent.
• Jellyfish have drifted along on ocean currents for around 650 million years. That’s long before dinosaurs lived on the Earth and sharks swam in our oceans. • They are not made of jelly. They should not be eaten with peanut butter. • They are not even related to fish. Jellyfish are not actually classified as ‘fish’; some people prefer to refer to them as ‘sea jellies’. They do not have gills (or lungs). • Jellyfish NEVER stop growing. Discover more fishy facts at ReClam the Bay or by taking a Fishing Class at Oceanside Bait and Tackle. Making sandsational sculptures is much easier than you might expect. You need tools and you need knowledge. Here are some good tips for when you’re starting out! Start with a plan: Draw a rough sketch of the sculpture you'd like to build. Be creative! Try to find a picture or a 3D model you can use to guide you. For example, if you are going to create a sculpture of a boat, take a toy boat with you to use as a mini-guide. Wet The Sand!!! Not just wet, but really wet. The sand MUST be wet through and through if you want it to hold its shape. You can’t have too much water. Pack The Sand!!! The tighter you pack the sand, the better it will hold together. Flatten your handfuls of wet sand into pancakes by jiggling them with gentle pressure. Pounding, patting or pummeling the sand will not work. The goal is to distribute the water evenly so it settles and binds the sand together. Living LBI Kids
Saturate your buckets of sand and pile them up. Let gravity do the work for you.
Take It From The Top And Work Inside Out!! Always work from the top down!! (Unless you enjoy doing things twice.) Pile high and wide, then carve down. Once you complete an area, you don’t want to go back up and re-work it: same thing with details closer to the center of your creation. Don’t make an outer wall and then try to move to the middle for a walkway. GO Slooooooow!! Patience is more important than talent, especially when you’re learning. Remove small amounts of sand at a time. In most cases it’s impossible to replace sand on the initial pile once it is gone. Make several passes to remove more and more sand until you reach just the point you want. Pile High-Pile Wide!!! Start with a pile larger than you think you will need. You don’t “build” a sand sculpture, you create a sand sculpture by removing all the parts of the pile that are not part of the creation! As said above, it is difficult to add sand once you are into the piece. Have Fun!!! Don’t get frustrated. Don’t fight the laws of sand sculpting, the laws will win. Get a straw! Like a sand blaster, use it to blow loose sand away from sculpture details. When you direct the flow of air, it removes only the loose sand, leaving the new detail made right where you want it. Saves the eyes too! Smoothing over your finished sculpture with an old paintbrush can give it a polished look.
Team America: Alex L., Doug L., Ricky C., Brianna L., and Michael L. won medals for their July 19th “Crumbling Castle.
Stop by the Haymarket in Ship Bottom .where you can get the Tools of the Trade Water buckets- It's essential to have a lot of buckets so you can properly wet down your sand before and during your sculpting. A good rule of thumb is to try to have at least one big water bucket per person. Shovels-You will definitely need some shovels. The bigger the sculpture, the more shovels you will want.
Marchitto
Spoons, toothpicks, funnels, spades, scoopers, skewers and paint scrapers are just some of the many inexpensive items that can be used to carve sand. Keep a list of everything you take and make sure it is all with you when you leave.
Paintbrushes-good for smoothing out loose sand or knife marks on a sculpture. Drinking straws-excellent for adding small details where a knife or larger item would be too big and for blowing away loose sand.

Water Spray Bottles-Water is the key to any successful sculpture. Spray bottles help you douse the finished sculpture and the more delicate parts of your piece that would not do well with a bucket of water being dumped on it. How to make a Kid-Friendly Patty Cake Tower: Use your hands to create a patty of very wet sand, several inches thick. After the patty has been gently leveled and patted into shape, make a new, slightly smaller patty on top of that one. Repeat the process until you've reached the desired height. The idea is to create a tall tapering tower with a wide base and narrow top. The bigger the base, the taller you can build. Remember to pack gently as you grow the tower. How to make a Kid-Friendly Dribble Tower: Take chunks of very wet, almost liquidy sand in your hands, squeeze a fistful and let it drip out of your hand into a little stacked tower of sand.
Rodney clung tightly to the blade of eel grass he shared with tiny mussels at the bottom of Barnegat Bay. The full moon shone brightly enough to cast shadows on the sandy bottom, and like silent ghosts, blue claw crabs slid along the surface of the water in search of dense grass patches where they could begin their molting process in relative obscurity. By dawn they will have backed out of their old and stained armor and be in the process of hardening new shells. They will still be vulnerable to predators, including their own species. The incoming tide had reached flood stage and would now remain slack until the ebb tide began. The stem of grass around which Rodney had wrapped his tail now stood starkly still and upright. His eyes, operating independently, were in constant motion looking for danger which might approach from anywhere. Seahorses are by no means fast swimmers, but now that his brooding pouch was laden with eggs, his movement was even further restricted. The next half hour or so would be the most dangerous time of his life, since he was almost totally exposed in the bright moonlight. At night, color changes designed to camouflage himself were of no use. To the careful observer, his form next to the eel grass blade could give his presence away. He had to be still--very still. The first hint of trouble was the appearance of a pod of grass shrimp. They were normally a source of food for him, but there were also larger creatures in the deep that were fond of shrimp. If the shrimp were noticed by any of them, he could be in deep trouble. And sure enough, a large male crab had spotted the crustaceans and was moving toward them. Rodney immediately slid down the blade of grass and when he reached the sandy floor, he began to swim away from the approaching crab. He must not, however, be caught on the open bottom. He had to use the cover of the grass as much as possible. Fortunately, the crab did not seem to notice him and it closed in on the shrimp. It reached out and grabbed one while the rest of them scattered. Rodney had now wrapped his tail around a new blade of grass in a somewhat more dense patch. The grass blades still continued to reach up toward the moon under the influence of the slack tide. The moonlight seemed to expose all who sought shelter and Rodney clutched the stem tightly and attempted to press tightly up against it. This time he was much lower on the grass blade, thereby reducing his silhouette against the brightness above. Then he spotted it! A large eel was making its way slowly through the grass, its wriggling movements designed to flush any small life out of their hiding places. It was too late for Rodney to flee. His only hope was to remain motionless so that he might not be spotted. Luck was not with him, however, and the eel had surely seen him. It approached with a definite mission in mind, and when it was only eighteen inches from the place where Rodney held on for dear life, the bay floor before him seemed to erupt in a cloud of sand as a striped bass pounced on the approaching eel. In a desperate attempt to escape, the free tail of the eel flailed in all directions, adding to the murkiness of the water. This reduced visibility is what enabled Rodney to escape unnoticed. He scurried away from the clash to avoid being crushed in the turmoil, and only when he had swum an additional twenty feet from the scene did he seek refuge in another clump of grass. He tried to swim as deeply into the vegetation as possible, and when he reached a most desirable spot, he again attached himself. Then, in what seemed like a breath of new life, he felt a definite and welcome movement of the water. It was ever so slight at first, then slowly became stronger and stronger. The tide at last had begun to recede, and soon he could no longer see the moon because the eel grass, bending in efforts to follow the tide, had formed what seemed to be a thatched layer over his hiding place. He rested in the darkness now that his time of extreme danger had passed. But the dawn had not yet arrived. A short distance away, a crab completed her emergence from a worn and battered shell. She too would quietly await the light of day. S. M. Zdep

by Roberto Falco Looking for a new interest at the shore this summer? Water too cold? Too many jellyfish circling about? Then get together with your friends, or better yet, make some new ones by playing beach soccer. What? On the beach? Soccer on the beach?? Yes, it's all the rage here in the United States, being imported from Brazil in the early 1990’s. The first beach soccer tournament in this country was held in Clearwater, Florida in 1991.
During the summer of 1993, a pro beach soccer event was held in Miami, Florida. Then in
1994 tournaments were held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Los Angeles and Huntington Beach, both in California. Now, wherever there is a beach, there is a soccer tournament. In New Jersey tournaments were held this spring and summer in Long Branch, Point Pleasant Beach, Seaside Heights & Wildwood. Beach soccer's worldwide popularity resulted in the first Beach Soccer World Cup, which was held in May of 2000 at the famed Copacabana Beach at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with France defeating Portugal, while the home side Brazilians fell in the semi-finals. Each team consists of five players including the Keeper, with an additional three to five players listed as subs. The matches are thirty-six minutes long (three-twelve minute periods), with 3 referees. The pitch is 90 x 120 feet. Playing soccer on the beach at high speed is very exciting. It boosts stamina and the continuous running on the surface increases leg strength and agility. With a softer surface many players attempt scissor and bicycle kicks, which adds to the fun. What makes beach soccer so cool is the fact that each game sees an average of eleven goals scored, which is certainly far more than soccer played on grass. There are currently 105 National Football Associations participating in beach soccer events worldwide and 190 countries are currently receiving televised coverage of beach soccer games. Its popularity is surely soaring. Check your local television guide for listings of beach soccer events. So, the next time you hit the beach, bring along your ball and try to get a game going. It really doesn’t matter if you have the right amount of players, or referees, or goals for that matter (use nearby beach trash bins), or the proper dimensions for the field, just get out there and play, enjoy the weather and have fun.
But don’t forget the sun block.
If you are the sporting type, try your hand at mini golf. Heartland Golf in Ship Bottom or Mr. Tees in North Beach Haven offer tons of fun as well as a challenge. Living LBI Kids

…the conclusion… “Stop, stop!” yelled Olly, but Olly was a slow swimmer and couldn’t catch up to the divers. Fran and Fred were too small to do anything to stop them. Sally yelled, “Dolly, you have to stop them!” Larry Lobster jumped on Dolly’s back and Dolly used her strong tail to swim as fast as she could. “Hurry, catch up to them,” Larry yelled. “I’m trying!” Dolly was swimming as fast as she could. The divers were swimming fast but Dolly is a dolphin and dolphins are very strong swimmers. It didn’t take long for Dolly to catch up to the divers. When she did, Larry snipped the net with his powerful claws. Molly swam through the hole in the net. “Get them Dolly,” Larry yelled. Dolly butted them with her head and they tumbled. As they tumbled, big bubbles floated to the surface. “Let’s get out of here before she hurts us,” the diver yelled. “YEAH get lost!” Dolly yelled to them. Molly held on to Dolly as they swam to safety. She was exhausted. “Molly, come with me, I know a spot where we can relax.” Dolly knew she needed rest. They went to the cove so Molly could rest. Molly rested in the shallow water. “Dolly, I’m not supposed to be near the children. Their father won’t allow it.” “Molly, you are exhausted. They will just have to understand.” Dolly swam close by to make sure no one bothered Molly. Just then the children showed up. “Molly what’s the matter?” “Dolly and Larry rescued me from the divers. They put a net over me and were going to take me.” Molly told them. “Are you ok?” Sarah ran to Molly and held her hand. Dane started to cry. “I’m so sorry that we are not allowed to play together. I miss you so much.” Living LBI Kids
“Dane, don’t cry. It will be alright.” Molly hugged him. From the distance they heard their father’s voice, “Sarah, Dane, what is going on?” “Papa! It’s Molly, she needs us,” Sarah yelled back. Sarah’s father ran over to see what was going on. “Papa, the divers tried to take her.” Sarah was so afraid that she started to cry. “Don’t worry Sarah, I’ll protect all of you,” he said as he sat by Molly. Molly didn’t know where to start. She told him about the ship sinking and how she found all of the books at the bottom of the sea. She apologized for taking the books. Sarah’s father smiled. He could see that Molly really was a nice mermaid. He felt bad that he wouldn’t allow her to play with the kids. She was a kid too, a kid mermaid! “That’s ok, the books are ruined because they are wet. You can keep them.” Sarah’s father finally understood why the children loved Molly. “I learned a lot from those books.” Molly told them. “Teach us,” the children sat in the warm shallow water. “Well, I can teach you why the water is so warm on the surface and why it is colder the deeper you swim.” Molly smiled. “Tell us Molly!” “It’s because of thermodynamics.” “Boy you are a smarty pants!” Sarah’s father looked at Sarah and raised his eyebrow as he smiled. He also wanted to learn. “You see, the sun shines its light on the water and the water absorbs the sun’s energy. The sun is like a big ball of fire. The heat from the sun travels to the earth and warms whatever it shines on. Just like when you stand in front of a fire. You feel the heat on your face but not on your back. The heated water is less dense, which means that it weighs less than colder water. Since it is lighter it will remain on the surface.
“Very interesting.” Dolly was learning so much. This method of heat transfer is called radiation. The heated water then transfers heat to the colder water, which is called conduction, and when the warm water flows upward, like when you boil water in a pot, it is called convection. Warm water will stay on the surface because it is less dense. “Molly, you are a very smart mermaid,” Sarah’s father smiled. “Would you like to teach the children?” “Oh yes, I love them.” “We need a teacher and you would be perfect for the job,” Sarah’s father looked at Sarah and Dane. “Yes, we need a teacher,” Dane yelled. Molly and the children were so happy. They found a teacher and she could teach the children. They all had quite an exciting day. The children went home to eat dinner while Molly and Dolly took a little rest. The water was as blue as the sky and smooth as glass. You could see right down to the bottom. They floated quietly, when Dolly noticed Molly’s arm. “Molly why is your arm bent?” Dolly saw that Molly’s arm looked like it was bent in the water. “What do you mean bent?” Molly didn’t know what Dolly was talking about. “It doesn’t look straight.” “Oh, that’s because of the index of refraction.” Molly read about optical illusions. Her arm was really straight but it looked bent because of refraction. The light bounces off the object towards your eye. Depending on what the light is traveling through, the light will bend slightly. Water is thicker than air so the light will bend more than when it travels through the air, so the part of the arm that is in the water will appear bent. The bending of light is called refraction. The amount of bending is called the index of refraction. When light shines on water, some of the light will reflect and some of the light will refract. When light hits a mirror, all of the light is reflected. “Molly, we had quite a day.” Dolly was tired too. “Yes we did.” Molly smiled, “we learned a lot today.” “Yes, we learned acoustics when you heard the sound twice.” Dolly laughed.
“And thermodynamics when the water was so warm at the surface.” Molly chirped back. “And bent arms, I mean optics.” “But most of all we learned to stay away from diver strangers.” Molly didn’t ever want to be in that situation again. “Don’t forget mechanics!” Dolly loved learning about swimming and how her tail worked. “If it wasn’t for mechanics, I would have never caught up to those divers. I hate to think what could have happened.” “Thank you, Dolly.” Just then the land children ran to the edge of the water. “Hi Molly, come swim with us.” Molly looked at Dolly and laughed, “I’m too tired right now, how about tomorrow?” “Will you tell us a story tomorrow?” “I’ll tell you lots of stories tomorrow,” Molly smiled. She had a lot to teach them. Dolly splashed and did a flip. The day was over and it was time for Molly to return to her shell and go to sleep. Tomorrow would come quickly and Molly would start another adventure.
This concludes the Molly Mermaid Saga. But you can still find Lisa’s art work Art & Decor of Surf City or create a story of your own then pick up art supplies at the Haymarket in Ship Bottom and illustrate it like Lisa did.
Dolphins live in salt water and eat fish. However, unlike fish, dolphins breathe air. They are marine mammals. They can bee seen off many ocean shores and usually travel in small groups. Dolphins are intelligent and spend a lot of time playing. They play chase, perform acrobatics, do flips and dives and they are the most fantastic SURFERS! It may look like a lot of fun but this kind of play may also tie family groups together and help teach the young to survive. Playing helps the young of all species learn how to use their bodies and how to get along with others. They communicate in squeaks, squeals and clicks, though body language plays a large role in their language process.

There is much we can learn from dolphins. When you go to the beach, ask the lifeguard if there have been any dolphins sightings today. And keep your eyes peeled because L.B.I. has always been a great place to see dolphins.

The Chicken or the Egg is So Cool! There is stuff to look at everywhere! Bright colored Chicken stuff, Egg stuff, Old Stuff, New Stuff–all over the place! Then there's the food: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, anytime! Breakfast for dinner is one of my favorites! You name it they got it. The menu has everything from omelets to chicken fingers, waffles and funny named sandwiches! And of course: they are famous for (I mean really famous, they were on TV's, Man vs Food!!!) their WINGS! `Not only are their meals yummy, but the desserts on the menu will make you ooh and ahh. Milkshakes, Brownie Sundaes, Worms in Dirt, all of it delicious and Fun! All in all It's a pretty cool place to go with your family or your friends. by

Pinky Shrimp’s is a wonderful place for kids. Their food is delightful. The service is great. Sitting outside is nice. Who would want to sit inside on a nice sunny warm day? Not me! My favorite things at Pinkys are the white chowda, clam strips, lingooni with sauce and they have the best pie for dessert! That is why I think Pinkys is a good restaurant for kids. h

My favorite place to grab breakfast before the beach is Jason’s Pancakes. They have REALLY great food – breakfast and lunch. They have a huge menu but I always get the pancakes, they’re awesome! In the summer my mom drops me off with my friends at the Pancake House. It’s really convenient when we’re coming from manahawkin. We can grab breakfast then head to the beach which is basically in their back yard. They’re good people too. They sponsor my basketball team and if you want to see me go to college on a basketball scholarship you better go to Jason’s Pancake House. Without a doubt!

Life is but a Dream
by Aimee Mishkovsky Life is but a Dream. "Be Fearless," I say to myself. I can see it. The biggest set of the day is rolling toward me. "Heaven high, friends!" I say, as the dolphins approach my surfboard out in the calm, glassy water. "Heaven high!" they all reply at once, sounding like a song. They begin nudging me softly like kittens who want to be pet. I stroke my hand on all their little dolphin heads like I was their mamma, giving my love unconditionally. Just then the brighter-than-ever orange sun peaks over the horizon and ignites the earth in a flash of light as if it were the beginning of existence. I let the first wave pass; I have a special feeling something bigger is coming. All of a sudden what must be the biggest wave of the day, travelling across the whole ocean just for me to take an epic ride, rolled in front of me and my dolphin friends. It was as if the sun's light sent the wave to us. I begin paddling with no fear. Right when I feel I have the catch, I stand up and look down into the face of the wave, drop in with Godspeed, fly down the wave, spreading my wings and begin to fly over the ocean, over the earth and into the sun! "Sun Child! Rise and shine! EPIC waves, Ssssuuuuper glassss and PUUUUMMMMPINGGG!!! Wake up Sun Child! Wake Up!" exclaimed my cousin Daniel, while jumping on the foot of my bed and slapping at my legs to wake me. The scene came to me. Beautiful glassy ocean with epic waves rolling in and the sun rising from the horizon in the background. Picturing this, I rose from bed and skipped downstairs to the kitchen, led by my excited cousin. There sat my brother Michael and sister Justina, my cousin Leila and our Mammas fixing up some breakfast together. “Awww YAYY! HEY EVERYONE!” I exclaim in excitement, So happy to see them all. Just then my aunt gives my cousins some eggs and bacon and my momma gives my brother, sister and me ours, I feel like a baby bird being fed by my momma bird. . . .(So much LOVE:) “Thank you, Momma!” we all say happily. “Tweet, Tweet” I say, and everyone giggles. After we ate, it began to get lighter outside. Our bellies fully satisfied with momma love, we run to our rooms and throw on our suits. We meet outside to get our boards from under the house and soon enough we are waving goodbye to our mothers who are on the front porch. “TO THE BEACH,” yells Justina, as she points to the east. As we approach the entrance to the beach, our little eyes burst open with awe. Birds flying, the glassy surface of the water, A-framing, overhead and We strap on our leashes, say a prayer of PEEEELING! This can thanks, look up to the sky and only be described head for the majestic with one word, water.

“WOW! Is that warm!” I say aloud. “WOOOOO!!” yells Justina. The five of us, Michael, Justina, Daniel, Leila, and I paddle out into the wide blue sea. It is really light on the horizon and I can tell the sun is about to rise. As I paddle, the warm water appears bluer than I've ever seen it. It feels so good on my skin, so refreshing. Once I get past the break, as I paddle, I make ripples in the water around me. I take off my leash and stand up on my board (which isn't easy) and dive into the majestic water. I swim all the way to the bottom and open my eyes. It is so clear, I pick up a handful of sand, let it slip through my fingers and settle back down on the ocean floor. I swim to the surface. As I approach, facing the east, 'WHAM' the sun, brighter than ever, shines onto my face in a warm flash. That was the moment I remembered my dream. It was as if the sun sent me the gift. It all came to me: the dolphins, the sunrise, that epic wave sent by the sun, my flying adventure. “GUYS!” I yell. “I JUST REMEMBERED THE DREAM I HAD LAST NIGHT! I made friends with dolphins and they let me pet them like I was their momma and there was an epic sunrise just like this one, and I got this epic wave that just came out of the sun randomly and somehow I flew over the wave and I KEPT FLYING TOWARD THE SUN! THEN I WOKE UP AND I FEEL LIKE ITS ALL COMING TRUE!” “WHAAAATTT?! No wayyy yo!!” Michael says. “That's so awesome!” exclaims Leila. “WHOOAAAA!!!” yells Justina. “Dude, Write a book, yo. That's wild,” says Dan. All of a sudden, a set comes rolling in. Michael paddles and catches the first one, shreds down the line, which looks like a dance. Next goes Leila with a nice left, and then Dan, pumping down the face of the wave going right, then Justina comes flying like a bird across the water. Then comes one last wave rolling toward me. I turn my board to the shore and begin paddling. I feel the energy from it lift me higher and higher above the sea until it is about to break. I stand up, drop down the wave going super fast, and then continue to ride right on the face. I pump all the way up and then all the way down, bottom turn and shoot back up to the top, hit the lip, and fly down it again. As I look up at the glassy face, I see a REAL face, a dolphin, then another and soon there are many dolphin heads popping out of the face of the wave, looking at me and just gliding across the water along side of me and all around me! They HAVE to be the same dolphins from my dream. Life is but a Dream. . .

Pet Particulars... and Animal Answers. My dog always starts to sing when he hears sirens in the distance. Why does he do that? Experts believe that dogs will howl at sirens and train whistles because they think it is another dog making the sound. It’s their way of talking “long distance” if you will. My cat’s tongue feels like a piece of sandpaper. Why is that? A cat’s tongue is covered with tiny hooks called papillae. As your cat cleans its fur they work like little hairbrushes–scraping away dirt and fleas. These papillae also help your cat lap up water and strip meat from bones. Can I teach my old dog a new trick? Contrary to the popular expression, you can in fact teach an old dog new tricks. Pet pooches are able to learn their entire lives. On the same note, don’t be suprised when they forget an old one! I’m allergic to fur and my parents want to get me a fish, but I’m afraid my friends won’t think that’s cool. Fish are symbols of good luck in many cultures. Most fish can live on their own from the moment they are born. Sounds pretty cool to me! Visit these pet friendly places on LBI and Manahawkin.
