Paradise at the end of the street As I sat on the beach, I noticed the kindness that surrounded me. People were chatting by the water pointing out the little clams digging their way into the sand. Kids were riding their boogie boards as they laughed. Teenagers closed their eyes and laid on a towel. No one was mean. No one judged. I was surrounded by acceptance. We are our most vulnerable without clothing. Bathing suits shake our confidence. But on the beach, there is an unwritten law to be kind. We are equally vulnerable. We are all the same when we get rid of our armor called clothes. The beach is beautiful but it is the people that make it paradise.

Oh what fun we had today! The water was warm and sun was hot. Splashing at the edge of the sea allows us to clear our minds and have some fun. When paradise is at the end of the street, it’s easy to get used to an “island” lifestyle. Flip-flops, bathing suits and a few sundresses are all you need. Surrounded by water, it is a safe bet that you will get wet. Swimming, boating, parasailing and stand up paddle boarding are just a few ways of getting wet.

Salt is a mineral substance composed primarily of sodium chloride (NaCl). Salt crystals are translucent and cubic in shape. They normally appear white but impurities may give them a blue or purple tinge. When dissolved in water they separate into Na+ and Cl− ions. Salt is one of the oldest food seasonings, and salting is an important method of food preservation.

Sea Salt

Salt processing dates back to around 6,000 years ago. Salt is produced from salt mines or by the evaporation of seawater. Electrolyte is a term for salts, specifically ions. Body fluids such as blood and plasma have a high concentration of sodium chloride (table salt, or NaCl). The electrolytes in sodium chloride are: sodium ion (Na+) chloride ion (Cl-)

When sea water evaporates, sea salt is what remains. Table salt is mined; minerals are stripped away, processing contains additives. LivingLBI.com

Electrolytes are important because they are what your cells (especially nerve, heart, muscle) use to maintain voltages across their cell membranes and to carry electrical impulses (nerve impulses, muscle contractions) across themselves and to other cells. Your kidneys work to keep the electrolyte concentrations in your blood constant despite changes in your body. When you exercise heavily, you lose electrolytes in your sweat, particularly sodium and potassium. These electrolytes must be replaced to keep the electrolyte concentrations of your body fluids constant.

How Far is the Horizon?

Stand at sea level and measure the height of your eyes. Divide that by 0.5736 This is the number used to compensate for the curvature. If you want the answer in nautical miles then the distance will be about equal to the square root of your height above the surface.

Square Root(height above surface / 0.5736) = distance to horizon For instance: if your eyes are about 5 feet above sea level, the distance to the horizon will be almost 3 miles out to sea. So if you see a sailboat right on the edge of the horizon you will know it is about 3 miles away. You may see the boat gradually sink below the horizon while the sail is still above the horizon; then the sail will slowly disappear below the horizon. This is due to the curvature of the earth. The boat is following the curve of earth.

LivingLBI Magazine • Aug 2014

16

The earth is a sphere so the ocean follows the curvature of the earth. The distance of the horizon depends on your height.

Long Before Dinosaurs

COASTAL LIVING MADE EASY

Horseshoe crabs are often called “living fossils” because fossils of their ancestors date back almost 450 million years--that’s 200 million years before dinosaurs existed. Horseshoe crabs are extremely important to the biomedical industry because their unique, copper-based blue blood contains a substance called limulus amebocyte lysate. The substance, which coagulates in the presence of small amounts of bacterial toxins, is used to test for sterility of medical equipment and virtually all intravenous drugs. Jellyfish have drifted along on ocean currents for millions of years. Jellyfishes have no brain, no blood, and no nervous system. Jellyfishes are made up of more than 95% water. Sharks predate the dinosaurs by 200 million years. The largest known species of shark, C. megalodon, might have reached a maximum length of 67 feet. Sharks belong to a family of fish that have skeletons made of cartilage, a tissue more flexible and lighter than bone.

A map of the clam trail can be found on www.ClamTrail.com Fill in the BOLD word from each clam plaque check off the list for each clam you visit. No matter what the weather; hot, cool, cloudy or windy … it’s a GREAT time on the Clam Trail! The clam trail is a fun and educational activity to help young and old to understand Barnegat Bay and how they can enjoy and improve it. People who follow the trail will find “clam clews” and “water wisdom” about shellfish, and how they improve the bay. Kids and adults will learn what everybody or anybody, can do to help the clams help the bay. Explore the Clam Trail as often as you like. The goal is to record the information found on the Fact plaques into the Explorer Log at each location along the Clam Trail. Remember, exploring is not always easy! Some addresses are general and the Fact Plaque may require some search. There are also new locations popping up along the trail.

What Four-Year-Olds Know Aaron spent hours perfecting his ride. His little Spiderman boogie board was too small for him but that didn’t stop him. He tried and tried for hours. Then he finally got it. Only four-years-old he figured out how to ride a wave. He glowed with pride with every successful ride.

Perseverance is what we can learn from a four year old. How many times have we just given up or not even have tried? We learn from practice. What have you practiced lately?

IF we could go back in time, what would you try? Is it too late to try it now? Open your mind. Let kids inspire you. Persevere! Practice until your get it. It is never too late to learn something new! How about surfing?

Watching young surfer girls, I realized that I had never even tried surfing. I

he main advantages to a saltwater pool are: They provide a constant delivery of pure chlorine as compared to a traditional chlorine pool which only delivers chlorine when manually introduced. Secondly, the softening effect of electrolysis. In laymen’s terms, you are swimming in water that has been softened, just as you would add a water softener to your home. Thirdly, most people are less sensitive to saltwater than they are to traditionally chlorinated water. This means less itchy, dried-out skin, and hair, not to mention, you don’t have the smell of chlorine or the burning eyes that also come with a traditional pool. Another benefit is that the cost of chemicals is much lower. You also don’t have to store chlorine which is a corrosive, instead you are storing earth-friendly salt.

watched as the young girls kept falling off of their boards. They kept getting up and trying again. As time went on, they continued to get better and better. They still fell but not so often.

How do pearls end up inside of Oysters? An oyster produces a pearl when the mantle of the oyster shell is damaged. The oyster responds to the irritation by producing nacre. (combination of calcium and protein) Nacre is also known as mother of pear; it is also what makes up the outer coating of pearls. It is strong, resilient, and iridescent. The nacre coats the foreign material and over time produces a pearl. Just like the shell of a clam, a pearl is made up of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been

deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth. The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild, but they are extremely rare. These wild pearls are referred to as natural pearls. Cultured or farmed pearls from pearl oysters and freshwater mussels make up the majority of those that are currently sold. Cultured pearls are made by implanting mantle tissue from another mollusk.

REVIEWS Bart Shatto as Dr. Jekyll in Jekyll & Hyde. Photo by Chase Heilman

Matt Ban as Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Photo by Jerry Dalia

Jekyll & Hyde was wonderfully dramatic. Bart Shatto’s performance was fantastic at the Surflight Theatre. Dr Jekyll’s compound seperates good from evil and he is his own test subject. Not only does he look and act differently but his voice deepens and amplifies to complete the change from good to evil. The story of Fiddler on the Roof a poor Jewish milkman living in a small Russian Village with his wife and five daughters. With each daughter’s marriage, traditions are lost. Set design for this delightful musical along with wardrobe was amazing.

Sea Siren: Summertime and the living is easy

Photo by Lisa Ball “Summertime and the living is easy.” Throughout the summer of 1959, the soundtrack of Samuel Goldwyn’s “Porgy and Bess” was on my parents’ lips. I turned eleven that August and survived my first crush as cool August mornings blended into sultry afternoons in the Ellenville, NY bungalow colony. Day after day, we never tired of diving for pennies or playing “Chicken” in the steel swimming pool with a huge sign painted in uneven letters: NO SWIMMING WITHOUT AN ADULT PRESENT. I prayed that I would sit on his shoulders just once. It never happened; living was not that easy for this fat girl entering sixth grade. “Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high.” My twin brother and I would bike all morning together—when it drizzled and when it sizzled—and helmets were not a part of our gear, then. Nor was reflective clothing. Or energy drinks. We just rode and rode as summer breezes carried the perfume of wild flowers and dried the sweat off our brows; we enjoyed stopping by the covered bridge on Ulster Heights Road by John Geiger’s cornfields, where green stalks stretched high as the sky. Fish glistened in the sun and jumped for a bit of crust from our breakfast. Life and freedom seemed endless then, too. Hunger and thirst told us lunch was ready; we somehow made it home for our tomato soup and tuna sandwich without a cell phone or a wristwatch. “Oh, your daddy’s rich and your momma’s good looking.” All week, the women played mahjongg and cards around the pool, my mother gardened around our bungalow, and come the weekend, their men arrived, hungry for food and companionship after working in the city heat all week. My parents were clearly happy then; they talked softly the way lovers do and sometimes they both crooned that song made famous in a classic movie before worries of political correctness surfaced and people shied away from voicing a political opinion--for fear of being misunderstood.

“One of these mornings, you’re gonna rise up singing. You’re gonna spread your wings and take to the sky.” In the movie, the scene could have been filmed on the boardwalk at Barnegat Bay, though it wasn’t. Boats are all about; women and children are company for Bess and her baby until Porgy arrives home in his sailboat and takes his son in his arms. Decades later, I would sing this very song to our Bryan as I held him during his first summer in the Catskill Mountains, a baby in my arms, until he fell asleep at my breast. I followed the model. Just in another place and time. “But, until that morning, there ain’t nothing can harm you, with daddy and momma standing by.” Throughout this summer, families visit Long Beach Island in the hopes of creating safe, enjoyable experiences which will mellow into memories that will sustain them through the months ahead. Has summertime living ever been “easy”? Only if your heart is not broken and your skin has not been burned. Is the clamming and the fishing still making folks happy? Visit Barnegat Bay and Barnegat Light and see for yourself! Is your daddy rich and is your momma good looking? We are all as rich as our goodness and as good looking as the depth of our kindness. The Siren of Commonality watches over bicyclists and motorists and pedestrians and skateboarders and walkers and runners and swimmers and sea glass scouts and shell collectors and sun worshipers and those who hide under umbrellas and those who enjoy low tide and those who defy high waves and those who enjoy the golf and those who enjoy the tennis and those who awaken at dawn and those who are asleep at dusk. All seek a happy time while some daddy and momma are by a child’s side wishing their child and your child no harm....on your island, our island--LBI. “We must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it--but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.”--Oliver Wendell Holmes Written by Judy Horowitz www.senoraonline.com

No Place I'd Rather Be there is no place I’d rather be today than by your side beside the sea just you and me feelin’ glad to be outside on the sand just holdin’ your hand sharin’ a smile and a breeze you and me are makin’ a sweet new memory today so when it gets cold and summer is old in the middle of December we’ll close our eyes feelin’ warm inside hold each other... and remember written by judy horowitz www.senoraonline.com

Kick off your shoes and feel the sand between your toes.

What a wonderful feeling to walk on the sand in bare feet! Wiggle your toes and push the sand with your feet then slide them under the sand. Sink your heels in and relax. I’ve been amazed all of my life by the beach. Miles of sand, miles of sea and miles of sky. We are so small in such a vast space. The enormity of the ocean and the miniscule grain of sand. Huge whales swim in the same ocean as tiny clams digging their way into the sand. I sit in my chair with my feet in the sand and ponder the wonders of the beach. Lisa LivingLBI.com

Es posible… Last Saturday, as I sipped my first cup of café colombiano delicioso y caliente con leche, I glanced outside mi ventana, y yo saw algo muy peculiar. Oops, I did it again! I’m not referring to Britney Spears’ song. What I mean is, as long as I can remember, Spanish and English have been part of my thoughts and dreams and world. I was born a fat Jewish baby. During my first years, Yiddish and English were spoken in my home, I ate Jewish foods like potato latkes, fruit kugel, and cheese blintzes, (lots of them), and drank tea from a glass. My first home was an apartment on the sixth floor of an apartment building on 14th Street and Avenue B in Manhattan. We were the only American family in the building. Everyone else was Puerto Rican. I realized really fast that every kid within hearing distance spoke a language I had never heard in my apartment. And my only hope to play with them was to learn Spanish. As I began to speak, rather awkwardly at first, I remember growing to love the jewelry my neighbors wore, enjoying the wonderful smells of cooking and candles coming from other apartments, hearing musical rhythms and melodies so different, so lovely to me. Women and daughters would protect themselves from autumn’s chill by wearing colorful, flowing shawls (ponchos), and I wore itchy wool sweaters that made me feel different and left out. One of my neighbors had a pet rooster in her apartment, mi amiga, Bonita, ate warm, fried bananas and yellow rice for lunch, while I had to eat a cold peanut butter sandwich and a cold pale banana all the time. And at Christmas, while my mom was lighting the menorah and my dad was hanging stockings on our make believe fireplace, la mamá de Bonita was stuffing straw in Bonita’s shoes and placing them under her bed, instead. Why? So many interesting differences would fascinate me as I grew up… My first Spanish teacher was a little Cuban man with a huge moustache. He had left Cuba, it was whispered, because he was looking for a life of freedom, democracy, and a job. Apparently, he was unable to enjoy these things in a Communistic country. Señor Dagoberto Molerio would wear this ridiculous yellow shirt with flamingos, palm trees, and sailboats. Yet, it was Mr. Molerio who taught me to read and write Spanish correctly. It was he who opened the door of my heart and mind to appreciate and respect the world of a different people living right next door to me. My coffee cup emptied, the magnificent red cardinal I had noticed sitting on one branch of our oak tree was still there, and on another branch sat a robin red breast. Two different birds of two separate seasons, side by side, enjoying one tree. Es posible… Written by Judy Horowitz www.senoraonline.com LivingLBI Magazine • Aug 2014
