FROM the Teachers Notebook... Could it be that a single moment shaped the course of my entire teaching journey, a half a century ago? My first pedagogy instructor, perhaps a couple of years older than her students, impressed me so, in the fall of 1966. Judy Garretzon joined us in a circle, and we all were to tell each other what we planned to teach. She listened raptly. I was last. I proudly stated that I planned to teach junior high school Spanish. She stood up, and she asked us the question that would begin my journey as a teacher…”Don’t any of you plan to teach children?”

not just when beginning…but until her final day of teaching. I’ve been lucky. I’ve studied with the best! What I have learned from my teachers of influence is that there is no child that doesn’t care. There is no parent or guardian that doesn’t care, either. And, they’ve been right. I’ve learned with the best--you, the parents, the loving first and forever teachers of your children--that if a child--your child --isn’t learning one way or another, then I need to find one way or another along with you…how to help your child learn.

Every good teacher needs a good teacher. Not just when preparing to enter the field…not just when student teaching,

Waves of my Mind

Be Happy

Powerful waves continually crashing. Strong winds lift sand into the air and powerfully hit my face. The ocean violently draws back its waves. Dark clouds fall from the sky. I am afraid.

Colors all around. Sounds of children laughing. The smell of a backyard barbecue. Fill your senses with things that make you happy. The taste of frozen yogurt and the feel of a soft kitten.

Rough seas below a dark sky with cold pellets of water tapping on top of my head. Cold air sends shivers up my back. As the wind swirls past my ears, hair whips my face, and I feel off balance. I am anxious.

To be happy, you must live a happy life. Fill your life with things that touch your soul. Things that you love. Watch a video that makes you laugh so hard that you can’t catch your breath. Hug a friend. Walk on the beach. Stare at the sky, and watch the clouds pass by.

Perfect waves rolling into shore are perfectly timed. Crisp white clouds pass through the brilliant blue sky. Hot sun soaks into my face and seagulls laugh while children play. I am happy.

Kick off your shoes and dig your feet into the sand. We are so lucky to live by the beach. Life is good to us. Appreciate our good fortune by enjoying life. Treat others with kindness, and you will feel happier. Really listen to what someone has to say. You may be surprised at what you learn. Keep negative thoughts away by filling your mind with happy thoughts. Be Happy. Lisa

Calm glass-like water and no wind pressing on my face. Not a sound around, not cold nor hot but just right. I feel the sun on my face and smell the salty air surrounding me. I am calm. Our emotions change with the rhythm of the sea.

Make your mom a tea cup card. Color teapot and cup, cut out and glue to a folded piece of card stock. Cut a slit from the top edge down around to the "lid" of the teapot cutting into it about a inch. Slide a tea bag into position.

How To Sculpt with Paper Clay

1. Use aluminum foil to make an armature (the form of the object you are sculpting). Crunch and press and squeeze until you get the shape your want. Hold it together with masking tape. 2. Tear off small bits of paper clay and smear it onto your armature. 3. Cover the entire form. Smooth with your hands. 4. Let dry overnight 5. Paint with water color, acrylics or tempera paint. Spray with hair spray to seal the paint. Glue ribbon, gems, yarn, etc.
