From Soldier to Soldier
The Good Life Gift Boutique Raising Funds for Our Wounded Heroes
The Good Life Gift Boutique is proud to offer the From Soldier To Soldier bracelets again this year, an awareness and fund-raising campaign in support of wounded veterans and their families.
The campaign is based on the sales of a designer version of the survival and friendship bracelets worn by many US and allied soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. For every bracelet sold $20 will be donated to Homes For Our Troops. To date, over $800,000 has been donated to this cause. The campaign is part of a national effort to raise significant funds for veterans’ aid organizations and bring attention to the special needs of returning heroes. 10 LivingLBI July 2012
“We are very pleased to partner with The Good Life Gift Boutique in Surf City, NJ in support of this unifying cause,” stated Niels Christiansen, CEO of LovelinksAmerica, the Massachusetts company behind the

national campaign. “From Soldier To Soldier is neither pro nor anti war. It is pro our young men and women who put their lives on the line for our country and made horrific sacrifices. It is about the survival, friendship and commitment, symbolized by these bracelets.”
sterling silver heart clasps with and without a small diamond & Pave crystal hearts are also available.
The bracelets which are worn in the field are braided by the soldiers with parachute cord. They are known as survival bracelets, because they can be unraveled and the paracord can be used for many purposes in a pinch. They are also exchanged among the soldiers as friendship bracelets. Often a uniform button is sewn on and used
The designer version has a sterling silver clasp shaped like a uniform button and is extremely tightly braided. Sterling silver and gold plated
The button clasp symbolizes the uniform. The clasped bracelet symbolizes the bond among the soldiers that can never be broken. To some, each knot in the bracelet symbolizes a fallen hero. The From Soldier to Soldier bracelets are a stylish fashion statement with a conscience and a powerful fundraiser in honor of our veterans. The bracelets are handcrafted in the USA. Prices are $95 and $145 (with a diamond on the clasp).

Tides Of He held my hand
while we watched the sunset. A cool summer breeze blew my hair into his face. He didn’t mind. He just smiled and held me close. We stood by the bay at one of our favorite spots. It is the dock at the end of dock road. So many memories came alive as we listened to the slapping of water hitting the dock. Behind us is Polly’s Dock. A guitar and a washboard played an old country song. “Big Bird” the resident egret quietly listened. Surrounded by old buildings, the past came alive. Acme Hotel and Bar stood where the Ketch lives now. A glass of beer was only 25¢ and Dock Road was an actual dock. Before the causeway was built, boats would cross the bay from Tuckerton to Beach Haven bringing with them wealthy Philadelphian vacationers. Together, we walked along Dock Road past the little bungalows that are still standing. He smiled and said, “Wouldn’t it be romantic to stay in that cute little bungalow?” I pictured beach shabby furniture painted white and lots of starfish and shells. We walked through Beach Haven

Love LBI?
Love and bought matching hats. “Let’s split a sub from Beals” he slipped and we laughed. It hadn’t been called Beals in a long time. It was now Murphy’s Marketplace! Later at Buckalews, he told me that he loves me. Then told me he had to leave town for a while. It was a turning point for him. Love was not something to rush into. He needed to marinate in this new feeling. He loves his kids and grandson and had wonderful memories of his marriage but this was a new feeling for him. He is older now and love is so much deeper. We walked to the beach and watched the waves roll in. He whispered, “I have to visit my past.” It was time for him to patch family squabbles, visit siblings, strengthen or end old friendships. Love is more than two people. Many people are involved but it is the kids that come first. We lived our lives and now it is our kids turn. Sitting on the beach with his arm around me, I knew he’d be back. Our relationship would be stronger and our love, deeper.

Purchasing a New Home
Our philosophy is to not only build loans but build relationships, and help guide you through the steps necessary to achieve a successful Real Estate Transaction.
Step 1: Get Your Finances in Order
Your credit reports are an ongoing look at how you manage your finances. You must know exactly what your credit reports say about your financial history before you apply for a mortgage, because the reports play an important role in the mortgage approval process and in determining the interest rate and other loan terms that a lender offers you. If you haven’t looked at your credit reports, you might be surprised at their contents, because errors are common.
Step 2: Get Familiar with the Mortgage Industry
Finding the right loan is crucial to your home buying success. We. can help you understand what is available to suit your needs. Their help and expertise will help you make an informed decision and they will guide you throughout the entire process
Step 3: Get Pre-Approved for a Mortgage
Do you know how much house you can afford? Probably not !Our Pre-approval gives you that competitive edge over other house hunters. Consider this scenario. A home seller gets two similar offers. One is accompanied by a letter from us that states she is pre-approved for a mortgage in the amount of the offer. The other has no supporting documents. Which offer do you think the seller will consider first?
Step 4: Determine Your Wants and Needs
Buying a home isn’t as difficult as you might think, even if you’re short on funds, but the process will go a lot smoother if you let us help you get familiar with your real estate market and narrow down your wants and needs before you start looking at houses.
Step 5: Learn to Work with Real Estate Agents
Real estate agents represent buyers, sellers, or both--and in some states they can work as neutral facilitators for either party. It’s essential to understand agent duties and loyalties before you make that first phone call.

ith the Internet changing the way we shop, the era of charming small town fabric stores has faded away. The Salt Box, located in Cedar Run, NJ, has beat the odds and continues to service its valued guests with great fabrics and high quality services as it enters its seventh year of business. Says owner Janice Thielke, “We still
Beautiful Fabrics! believe in basic touch and feel before you purchase.” From the moment you walk into The Salt Box, an impressive
array of fabrics on bolts and wall hangers radiates luxury. But don’t be afraid, the down-to-earth sales team is there to educate all customers in choosing the right fabrics to best fit their lifestyle and budget. For those who don’t know what they want, “We ask lots of questions before suggesting the right fabric for use, whether it is windows, upholstery, indoor/outdoor cushions, as well as boat cushions.” The most common mistake, states Thielke, is selecting a fabric before deciding what purpose it serves. With a friendly and knowledgeable staff, The Salt Box can provide your home with both hard and soft window treatments; re-upholstery or slipcovers for tired yet high-quality or sentimental pieces that you shouldn’t throw away; decorative pillows and beautiful bedding. A custom line of furniture and 100% cotton washable fabric lines are exclusive to The Salt Box by Made in America. Every night I’m drawn to the spectacular colors of sunset. I’m amazed and never tire of such a beautiful sight. As sunset becomes later each night, my schedule changes to accommodate sunset time. I stop whatever I’m doing, and forget whatever I was thinking and focus on the miraculous sight. Lately I’ve be sharing the sunset with the ones that I love. My three dogs! They love to ride in the van so I pile them in and off we go. We drive around looking for the best spot to view the sunset. Then we park, click the shutter of my camera and relax. My dogs just want to be with me. I yell “want to come?” and the excitement begins. They pick their spot in the van and I can feel them smile. Dogs express themselves with full body communication. They remind me of children. Innocent and honest, they experience a full range of emotions. With three of them, I see the full range daily. They all wake up with the excitement of the day. I say, “good morning, give me hugs” they snuggle and their body language say “I love you.” They compete for attention and experience jealousy. As I watch the sunset, the dogs are calm as if they know why we have stopped. They are responding to my serenity they are a mirror of my emotions. My dogs are a “happiness gauge.” If they are happy it is bedcause I am happy. Where ever you are, bring your dog and take the time to enjoy the sunset. Lisa

Sea Sirens: Summer Lessons
Judy horowitz www.SenoraOnline.com
I began preparing to become a good teacher one breezy morning in May on Career Day. I was a five-year-old kindergartener in PS 19 on 14th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan. Our classroom window was open, and the patch of grass below it had just been mowed. The smell was as exquisite as the sky. And equally unforgettable. My father, a master teacher and attorney, celebrated my choice of profession. After tucking my twin brother into bed that night, he whispered in my ear, “Judel, as long as you continue to love learning, you will love teaching and as long as you continue to love teaching, you will continue to love learning.” Forty-two years later, I wish I could tell my father what a wonderful mentor he was. I wish I could tell him that my best preparation for ongoing joy of learning and teaching has happened on the beach throughout my life. Childhood summer days by the shore were long. My family would rent a simple wood bungalow facing the ocean during July and August. The window by my bed greeted the sunrise and Jake’s window faced the setting sun. I remember the sky being on fire outside my window in the morning and it being ablaze outside his window as night fell. The screened-in porch was where we “rested” after lunch, Jake and I, while the wind and waves continued without us. At the end of each day, it was the same: “wash off the sand before coming into the bungalow.” We would do that in the outside shower attached to our bungalow. I loved how the sun leaked in between the cracks in the wood and the shower glistened around me, dancing rainbows. I close my eyes and see my mother sweeping. Constantly. Sand was everywhere: in my shoes, in my bed, often in the cheese sandwiches I enjoyed on a blanket held down on the sand with four big seashells at the corners, securing it in the face of strong winds. Could it be that my creative energy was born on the beach on sultry sunny days while the sea crashed and thundered about my soul? If I didn’t watch carefully, the waves would surprise me and knock me down. Once down, I had to get up quickly and regain my balance or another would come and do it again. Who knew the surf was teaching me to take care of myself in the face of a bully? Like waves that surprise us, bullies have
always been around. They choose their victims carefully; they seem to select those vulnerable to repeated attack without standing their ground. Could it be the Sea Siren of Courage was instructing the undertow to teach me to stand my ground and be firm in the face of difficulty, to anticipate the pull towards the black deep of failure, of addiction, of despair—to stay wary, not grow weary. Now I know why my father, resting on weekends on a lounge chair, would reward whichever twin had dug the deepest in our competitive search for China. Sometimes, while digging I would glance at the horizon and wonder if a child in China was digging and searching for me. Would our hands touch if I dug long enough, deep enough? The Sea Sirens of Connection and Tenacity must have lived in the spray of the waves, curling and sparkling on their way to the sand like white dolphins racing to shore, making the joy of purpose and sustained effort less lonely, sprinkled with hope undying and the belief that it is possible. Who came every night and enjoyed the starlit banquet of plastic pail “upside down cakes” with a seashell “cherry on top” after I was in bed? Come morning, the hundred or more cakes were demolished or gone, and I ready to begin baking again…for whomever would emerge from the ocean to feast. Was the Sea Siren of Generosity cunningly spinning her wet web around my heart…when I was a little girl, preparing to become a good teacher? And, each day, as another sun set outside Jake’s window, I’ve always known that she was watching as I threw a crust of bread behind me that I had saved from lunch and listened as gulls would descend upon it, and disappear. I’ve opened my own school now; this is my reward for having retired from public school teaching. And, after working with children or adults who have grown weary of digging, who tire of facing the bully within threatening to drown their hopes and splash salty sand on their life wounds, I close my eyes and see my father in his chair counting my sand cakes and my mother sweeping…and, I know there is a hand across the ocean waiting to meet mine, as we continue to dig to China, in July on LBI. judy horowitz

Sea salt
is used in cooking as it has many minerals like magnesium, iodine, and potassium. These are highly essential nutrients for the human body. However, magnesium is poorly absorbed through ingestion. Sea salt is easily obtained from the evaporation of sea water. It is chunky and not clear in appearance.
Epsom salt
has a high magnesium content. It is used in bath salts due to the property that the salt gets absorbed into the skin. It is effective in reducing stress, draws out several toxins from the body, and is proved to treat several skin problems. Epsom salt is obtained by chemical processes. It is white in color and is used in preparation of medicines and is use for body healing. By soaking your feet, magnesium will be absorbed through your skin. Expect a decrease in stress, aches and pain.! 34 LivingLBI July 2012

These creatures help our volunteers explain the benefits of shellfish filtering, feeding and cleaning our estuary. We enable everyone to become stewards of our estuary. (Click her to go to ReClam the Bay www. reclamthebay.org) The clam trail is a fun and educational treasure hunt to help young and old understand Barnegat Bay and how they can enjoy and improve it. The goal is to record the FACTS found on plaques at each location along the clam trail. You will keep a log of the facts found at the locations you visit. Receive the awards either mail in the your Explorer Log or enter the information on line. If you want to join it. Read the Rules and Prizes Buy RCTB stickers from the Clam Friends. Each one you buy enables us to put about 400 clams in the bay. Be sure to tell the merchants (Clam Friends) that you are on the clam trail. Eat at their restaurants and buy things at their shops. Wreck Fishing When
most summer vacationers who visit LBI think of going fishing, the almost universal species that comes to mind is the summer flounder, a.k.a. fluke. Others will target bluefish, and some will fish for striped bass whose numbers have made an amazing comeback in recent years. The once popular weakfishing sport is currently but a memory. What happened to the weakfish is certainly a matter of conjecture, and many among us hope that this biomass will recover/return in the not too distant future.
boat. And if you are not, there are many sport fishing boats for hire that can anchor you up on top of great sea bass fishing. One word of caution, however. If you are prone to getting seasick, this type of fishing on anchor is not for you. In addition, if you plan to use your boat, venture out when there are light winds. They will provide calm seas and enough of a breeze to keep you from drifting off anchor. Sea bass, like many other sought-after species of fish, like to hang out where they can obtain an easy meal. And this veritable cornucopia of fish can be found on any of the numerous sunken ship wrecks and artificial reefs that dot our coastline. These wrecks abound with crustaceans and small fish that our game fish absolutely love to eat. It is their dining room. You can obtain the coordinates for many wrecks on charts and in other publications carried by all bait-and-tackle shops on LBI.
Already I can hear the sharpies reading this who ask, what about black sea bass? Yes, indeed, let’s now move on to a discussion of this aforementioned species. Black sea bass can be found in the bay, around jetties, and from the shoreline as far out as you want to fish. Those that reach legal size are usually located in deeper waters. Thus, individuals who fish such waters from party boats and private boats sometimes catch black sea bass while Something I haven’t mentioned yet is that, as of this writfishing for other species--particularly fluke. ing, each angler is allowed a daily total of 25 sea bass meeting the minimum length requirements. The regs for If you are lucky enough to catch a keeper bass (currently a minimum of 12 ½ inches in length), you almost no other game fish species that we typically pursue here certainly have drifted over some bottom structure where on LBI are so liberal. Hence, my use of the term “cooler sea bass like to congregate. Your prize, for my money, full” is not entirely inappropriate. Okay, let’s get you up to speed very quickly. is the best-tasting finfish you can catch on LBI during the summer months. It is no wonder that, when they are You are going to go out in your boat to anchor above what available at your local fish market, they are among the most expensive fillets in the showcase. Wreck Fishing Fishing in Your Quarry’s Dining Room water deeper or much more shallow than 100 feet, adjust the length of your line accordingly. Now, begin a pattern search around your marker, looking for the wreck on your depth finder. If it is a steel ship or a newly-sunken wreck it will have a high profile. Otherwise, it will appear only somewhat elevated from surrounding ocean bottom. It may look like a rounded bump, or it may have a jagged appearance. If you find the wreck is located 100 feet or more from your marker, drop a second marker to precisely mark it. And for future reference, write down the revised coordinates where the wreck lies, according to your GPS. Now you will need to park your boat right over these waiting, and hopefully hungry, fish. You may anchor off the wreck or drop a grappling hook designed to actually snare the submerged wreck. I prefer to use a grappling hook because it is far easier to retrieve than an anchor that has accidently gotten too close to the wreck and gotten caught in it. You can make your own grappling hook for a few dollars. Start with a 12-inch long piece of 1 ½ inch galvanized pipe. Take two pieces of ¼ inch rebar, each four feet in length. Do not use heavier rebar or you may not be able to dislodge it from the wreck. Bend each piece back upon itself so you end up with two bent over lengths, each two feet long. Insert the pieces of rebar into the pipe so that the closed ends protrude from the pipe by an inch or two. Attach a 5/16- inch shackle through both protruding rebar ends. Then bend back each of the four open ends of rebar until they form a sixty-degree angle with the pipe. Your grappling hook is finished. Attach a six-foot length of 5/16-inch galvanized chain to the shackle. This will provide the needed weight to put the hook right on the wreck. Tie at least 150 feet of ½-inch nylon rope to the chain, and attach the bitter end to the handle of a five-gallon bucket in which you will coil your rope. Having the bucket attached will enable you to recover if the bitter end of
the rope slips through your hands while you are totally engaged in trying to hook onto the wreck. Go a short distance upwind of your marker and drop the hook until it reaches the bottom. Do this from the bow, never the stern. You might catch a wave over the transom and sink. Once your hook is on the bottom, let out some additional line and tie it off to a bow cleat. You will drift back over the wreck where, hopefully, your hook will catch on the first pass. Make sure the line is tight, then return to the cockpit to begin filling your cooler. You can change your position over the wreck by periodically letting out or taking in the line on your grappling hook. I use a total of three 3/0 circle hooks attached to dropper loops on a 3-4 foot leader. A bank sinker of 5-10 oz. is attached to the bottom of the leader, and a swivel is attached to the top. Popular baits include cut sea clams, pieces of crab or sand crabs used whole. If you know how to use jigs, they will sometimes work when nothing else will. Make sure you fish straight up and down or you will lose a lot of jigs to the wreck. In addition to the primary summer species of sea bass, you also have the opportunity to catch any other fish that may be resident on the wreck. It’s absolutely amazing what you may pull up. Sea bass can be filleted, but that is for sissies. Unless you’ve eaten a freshly-caught whole sea bass prepared on a charcoal grill, in a wok, steamed or deep-fried, you haven’t tasted anything. Check the internet for preparation ideas and techniques. Bon appetite! S. M. Zdep

SEASTARS No longer called starfish because they are not fish! It’s an echinoderm, closely related to sea urchins and sand dollars.
Sea stars have no brains and no blood. Their nervous system is spread through their arms and their “blood” is actually filtered sea water. There are some 2,000 species of sea star living in all the world’s oceans, from tropical habitats to the cold sea floor. A starfish can change its gender. Starfish do not have centrally located eyes as such but instead have eyes at the tip of their arms, which can allow it to see in light and dark but not very clearly. The five-arm varieties are the most common, hence their name, but species with 10, 20, and even 40 arms exist. sea stars are famous for their ability to regenerate limbs, and in some cases, entire bodies. The mouth of the starfish lies in the middle on its underside, from where it feeds on clams, oysters and fish. One of the facts about sea star is that when these starfish want to feed on their prey, they do so in a very unique manner. Since a starfish’s mouth is on the underside, when it wants to eat a prey, first the starfish will wrap its strong arms around clams or their prey’s shells and coverings and then jerk it open. Then, once the feed is right underneath it, it pushes its stomach out of its mouth, into the shell and takes in the prey and then, retracts its stomach back inside through the mouth! This method of feeding allows the starfish to eat a prey that is much larger than its mouth opening. These creatures of the sea, despite their huge popularity and multitude of species types, have become threatened due to environmental pollution, especially oil spills. So, let’s do our bit and try to preserve our five armed friends so that our future generations get a chance to see and admire them too. photo by Ingela Nordlund email Lisa@LivingLBI.com to order any photographs in this magazine. Dolphin Facts To prevent drowning while sleeping only half of the dolphin’s brain goes to sleep while the other half remains awake so they can continue to breathe! Most dolphins live long lives. The bottlenose dolphin can live over 40 years, and the orca can live to be 70 or 80! A dolphin’s dorsal fin is as distinctive as a person’s face. Thanks to a very sensitive retina that efficiently gathers light, a dolphin can see as well beneath the water as above it. Dolphins swallow fish whole, despite the 100 teeth in their mouths. The teeth are used to grasp prey. A dolphin’s skin is extremely delicate and easily injured by rough surfaces — much like human skin. Unlike any other mammal, dolphin babies are born tail first.

and healthier looking. Eileen’s beach buddies liked the Tattoo Brightener so much that they wanted her to put it in a larger bottle and to call it something else. The following winter Eileen did exactly what her friends recommended and changed the name to Ocean 6 Illuminus. Unlike other products on the market Ocean 6 Illuminus contains no petroleum, alcohol, fragrance, preservatives or parabens.Ocean 6 Illuminus is excellent for people with sensitive skin. Eileen is excited about the fusion between health and the beauty benefits that Astaxanthin provides. Who would have thought that a tattoo brightener could be an amazing anti wrinkle serum with natural sunscreens. Eileen’s passion and inspiration has come from spending her summers in Beach Haven for the last 30 years. Ocean 6 is available at many stores on or near Long Beach Island. Eileen is working on other products containing Astaxanthin which will be launched this year. Ocean 6 Illuminus will help you maintain an end-
less summer tan. And doesn’t your skin deserve to look its best? (Available at Anything Goes, Millcreek Plaza, Beach Haven West 609-848-1111)
