The Calm at At the end of the day comes a spectacular calmness! The huge glowing ball in the sky captures our attention. Every night we wait for the show to start. We stop what we are doing and gaze at this incredible display. Is it really calmer or is it the perception of calm? nothing is as important as the gorgeous view that fills our mind. At sunset in any bay park on LBI, you will find people watching the sun as it sets. We are drawn to edge of the water to watch that fiery hot disk slowly sink behind the horizon.

End of the Day Our minds are tricked just as they were tricked by the size of the sun. High in the sky is seems so small. Yet when we view it next to a building at the end of the street, it multiplies in size. It is all perception. Lost in the even larger sky, the sun seems small and insignificant. We turn our eyes away from the daytime sun. We feel it’s warmth and also hear the sounds of summer. Sea gulls screeching, waves LivingLBI.com

crashing, people talking, cars passing, ice trucks jingling and kids laughing. All day long we focus on the sounds of the day. At sunset, noises seem to disappear. A Little Bit of Key West Bill Hutson, owner of Lorry’s Island End Motel, is one of a kind. Like his motel, he truly captures the spirit of Long Beach Island. He purchased the motel 20 years ago “because I love this beautiful and peaceful laid back end of Long Beach Island”. Over the years he has renovated Lorry’s into a “Key West” style motel.

Many customers come back every year and some 2 - 4 times a year. He’ll go out of his way for his guests. One time a guest called him from the Manahawkin Bus Station because he couldn’t get a cab. The man was running late for a show at the Surflight Theatre so Bill jumped in his car and picked him up and got him to the show on time.

Treasures of the Island Thinking about LBI, I can almost feel the motion of the waves. I feel myself float on top of a wave and slowly descend. Even on dry land, I feel the rocking of the ocean. LBI is a giant cradle. It is my safe, warm place.

Shrimp Quesadilla
Simple Ingredients Peeled and deveined shrimp Lime juice – about 2 limes Green onions, chopped Handful cilantro, chopped Tortillas (burrito size) Shredded cheese Butter
Simple Instructions Heat a large skillet to medium heat. Place a buttered tortilla in the skillet Add shrimp mixture to half of the tortilla. Sprinkle with cheese and fold the tortilla. Cook for a couple minutes on each side

No matter what the weather; hot, cool, cloudy or windy … it’s a GREAT time on the Clam Trail! The clam trail is a fun and educational activity to help young and old to understand Barnegat Bay and how they can enjoy and improve it. People who follow the trail will find “clam clews” and “water wisdom” about shellfish, and how they improve the bay. Kids and adults will learn what everybody or anybody, can do to help the clams help the bay. Explore the Clam Trail as often as you like. The goal is to record the information found on the Fact plaques into the Explorer Log at each location along the Clam Trail. Remember, exploring is not always easy! Some addresses are general and the Fact Plaque may require some search. There are also new locations popping up along the trail.

FREEDOM One hot and humid 4th of July, while fighting a losing battle against a melting ice cream cone on one of our beaches, I had a brief--yet life altering--encounter with a highly decorated veteran. By his side day were his father-also in uniform--and his mother, who wore a broche of an American flag on the collar of her blouse. I thanked both men for their service and asked the younger man what lesson he learned that had impacted his return to civilian life. His answer was simple. He had learned how little he needed to be free. Those words blended with the sounds of children challenging the waves and a lone seagull squawking on the dunes. At the start of my third summer living in the Long Beach Island area, I continue to grow to appreciate a different world; I am learning to embrace different opportunities and priorities from those that drove many of my behaviors while I lived most of my married life in Bergen County. Freedom is no longer all about retreating into a big bowl of potato salad and too many red, white and blue sprinkled cupcakes. Freedom’s bells ring in the breezes of a summer day and the time to savor simple pleasures all day long. Freedom’s bells jingle as I worry less about tanning--and enjoy more--cool salt air on my skin and a heightened awareness of my place in a world I have inherited and one I wish to leave a better place. I am happy to sink into simple summer pleasures like a morning swim at low tide or a leisurely stroll in the warm surf at sunset.

Freedom’s bells clang like thunderous fireworks, drowning out unnecessary apologies I no longer utter and banishing guilt unwarranted. A darkened hushed sky rejoices after, amidst the lingering aftermath of gunpowder mist. Ah, the places one can visit under July skies: a golden moment of trust that one need not be held hostage to extraneous objects, outdated thoughts, and obsolete fears or resentments. These are the enemy in anyone's battle for his or her best life. Freedom is surrender. To unapologetically embrace one’s strengths and share them unabashedly with our world is liberty in action. To greet each moment with our guard down and each individual without malice is emancipation of the soul. Time can be our model. Seasons move forward; they teach us that it is possible to heal from life's unkind storms. Space uncluttered, courage summoned when needed, and energy devoted to doing something that

I first met Marla Wink during a fragile moment of my life. Our son was about to marry the most exquisite young lady in the universe in two weeks, and I wanted to be the second most beautiful mother-in-law at the upcoming wedding. I had already purchased the dress: a champagne pink suit. It hid every flaw--real or imagined. I needed the right “undergarments”. Women know how lonely that can feel.
mattered. Nobody notices what one wears underneath, anyway. Marla smiled, and asked to see the dress. I had it with me! Her pleasure at the fabric and the color and her excitement over my needing lingerie was contagious! One would think she was part of the wedding party. She selected a couple of items off a rack and, “magically” matched my champagne pink suit with a bra and a camisole that transformed my breasts and my body and the dress! Maybe, she just selected a bra that fit my body and felt lovely to the touch. Maybe, in the end, it is her love of her craft, her respect of women, and her compassion for all who enter her store that is magical.
Once upon a time, I would visit a store in Bergen County where the women treated me and my body with respect and love. I did what I do now when I need to solve a problem: I crossed the causeway, turned right, and headed for the Ferris wheel. My plan was to grab a coffee and find the solution on the beach. Instead, Fate led me to an inviting storefront. The name, too, intrigued me. Indian Summer. Our son was marrying on the autumn equinox. An outdoor wedding. We were all hoping for a gently balmy day, with breezes that suggest calm and hope.
I know that Marla has traveled the world. Could it be that her observation of women throughout Europe and South America has developed her love of lingerie and her appreciation of intimate outerwear. Is it possible that her life experiences while living in Thailand and Indonesia deepened her empathic compassion towards all women? Marla, a professional seamstress, also fits women with exceptionally sensitive needs, including those who have undergone reconstructive surgery. Perhaps, Marla’s grace has been heightened as a result of her own healing, after Hurricane Sandy destroyed her store. She has created anew, a place where women can find comfort in starting over.
Upon entering, I felt at home. Simon and Garfunkel quietly singing, “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”, and I knew that in this shop, sandwiched between the bay and the beach, I would find the bra of my dreams. I stood for awhile, and enjoyed the calm. The warmth. The feel of the fabrics that asked to be fondled. The lace items waiting to be loved. There were tiny sizes. Large sizes. Maybe, my size. There were corners of comfort, a sitting area by a big window, and a couple of large, handsome try-on rooms, discreetly tucked away. My shyness began to disappear like Monarch butterflies on their way after summer on LBI quietly closes. Marla listened intently as we talked about the wedding and moving, and I felt a connection that one feels over a cup of coffee in the home of a friend. And, all the while, as Marla gave me her full attention, her assistants helped women who drifted in. All sorts of ages and stages, sizes and needs--from nightgowns to negligees and beachwear for every purpose. Women who knew they would find what they needed here. I nervously explained that I needed underwear. A bra. A camisole. A slip, maybe. It had been years since these items

It’s been a couple of years since our son’s wedding. I visit the shop often. I swear that my tennis game is much improved because of my perfectly fitting sports bra! Come visit Indian Summer. Once upon a time, there lived a man on a small but most beautiful island, called “Fortitude”. Throughout his teens, he dreamed of swimming away from his uneventful island to another, bigger and more interesting. At last, on his twentieth birthday, he decided to seek adventure and that way, realize his dream.
Una mañana de verano, se despertó bien temprano y salió de su casa en búsqueda de fama y fortuna. Esa mañana, la temperatura fue perfecta, casi 80 grados, con brisas delicadas y un sol brillante en un cielo azul. Antes de entrar en el mar, pasó dos o tres minutos admirando las nubes blancas y hermosas, moviéndose silenciosamente arriba. Se puso a nadar, y seguía nadando felizmente por una hora y media cuando sin aviso, el color del cielo comenzó a cambiar. One summer morning he awakened very early and left his home in search of fame and fortune. When he left, the temperature was a perfect 80 degrees, with delicate breezes and a brilliant sun snuggled in a blue sky. Before entering the sea, he spent dwo or three minutes admiring the beautiful white clouds moving silently above. He began to swim and continued swimming happily for an hour and a half. Suddenly, with no warning, the color of the sky began to change. Gray clouds began to suffocate the sun, and in an instant, the temperature of the sea dropped as the current changed. The man became nervous as he watched the enormous waves, so strong and violent, reminding him of angry monsters! He began to swim more aggressively and energetically, but he had lost sight of the beach.

At that very moment, he saw a helicopter above and began to scream, “Help me! His efforts were in vain; of course, the pilot did not hear him and could not help him. The man continued shouting and moving his arm about in the hopes of attracting the pilot’s attention. But, the shouts and gestures were futile, and the pilot disappeared from view without realizing that the poor man was drowning below. In desperation, the poor man continued floating for several moments when suddenly, angel saw him from behind a pink cloud The angel spoke to him with a voice as delicate as a breeze, “I will help you, son. You don’t have to suffer any more. “ Nearly frightened to death and equally exhausted, he asked, “How can you help me?” the angel murmured, “swim...swim...swim more...” The adventurer obeyed. While he swam, the angel kept repeating, “Continue swimming, fighting for your life, and looking for... your beach, your island,your best life.” The man continued swimming and fighting and searching with renewed energy and a determination, both furious and strong.
En fin, después de gran esfuerzo, regresó a una isla. Agotado, empezó a llorar, acariciando la arena blanca y caliente. Dos muchachos jugaban cerca, y lo miraron. Su mano tocó una estrella de mar. At last, after much effort, he returned to an island. Exhausted, he began to weep as he caressed the white, warm sand. Two boys played nearby and watched him. His hand fell on a starfish. Silently, he thanked the heavens and rested. finally, he asked the bigger boy, “What is the name of this island?” The boy answered in a low voice, “Courage”. Decades later, the man, now retired, lives in a large city. Every July, he returns to the beach of his youth. He sits in a folding chair under a large pink umbrella for many hours staring at the waves and the horizon and giving thanks. He always returns to the island of “Courage”, and searches the pink clouds for an angel that told him, “Swim...”

After the Parry House, a large hotel on Centre St, burned to the ground, Captain & Mrs. Parry had the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in built. It was given in gratitude for the lives of those spared when the Parry House burned down, and in memory of their daughter, Clara Parry Hilger, who had died in childbirth in February 1881. The Church was built over the Winter and Spring of 1881-1882. The first services were held on 9 July 1882.

Welcome to the Beach Haven Library Museum! On the second floor, there is a door where one may step down into a well furnished little museum with high, beamed ceilings and a huge, stone fireplace. It is filled with old maps, hotel registers, deeds, diaries, photographs and other relics of Beach Haven’s century and more of history. Our museum is a work in progress. Our goal is to house all the important documents and articles that record our borough’s history from 1874. The Beach Haven Library was built as a library, not as LivingLBI.com
a home, as some people believe. The land and building were donated by the Pharo family, Beach Haven’s first residents. The library was built in 1924. The interior hasn’t changed much since then.
On Sunday, September 14th the Beach Haven Library will be celebrating their 90th anniversary from 1- 3 pm.

The community garden at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal Church is flourishing as usual! The gardeners do a fantastic job sowing and growing. Some of the fresh vegetables and fruit are donated to the St Francis Food Pantry. The community garden will be adding straw bale gardening to expand the garden. The main difference between container gardening and straw bale gardening is that a bale of straw is used as the container! The straw is held together with string and as it begins to decay, the straw becomes compost that creates an extraordinary plant rooting environment. It takes about two weeks for the straw to become “conditioned.” Then plants can be potted in the straw. As the straw decomposes, the compost provides nutrients and warmth for plants.
