Beautiful Fabrics! year of business. Says owner Janice Thielke, “We still believe in basic touch and feel before you purchase.” From the moment you walk into The Salt Box, an impressive
array of fabrics on bolts and wall hangers radiates luxury. But don’t be afraid, the down-to-earth sales team is there to educate all customers in choosing the right fabrics to best fit their lifestyle and budget. For those who don’t know what they want, “We ask lots of questions before suggesting the right fabric for use, whether it is windows, upholstery, indoor/outdoor cushions, as well as boat cushions.” The most common mistake, states Thielke, is selecting a fabric before deciding what purpose it serves. With a friendly and knowledgeable staff, The Salt Box can provide your home with both hard and soft window treatments; re-upholstery or slipcovers for tired yet high-quality or sentimental pieces that you shouldn’t throw away; decorative pillows and beautiful bedding. is about the fun of environmental involvement and the fun of environmental education! We grow millions of baby clams and oysters. These creatures help our volunteers explain the benefits of shellfish filtering, feeding and cleaning our estuary. We enable everyone to become stewards of our estuary. (Click her to go to ReClam the Bay www.reclamthebay.org) The clam trail is a fun and educational treasure hunt to help young and old understand Barnegat Bay and how they can enjoy and improve it. The goal is to record the FACTS found on plaques at each location along the clam trail. You will keep a log of the facts found at the locations you visit. Receive the awards either mail in the your Explorer Log or enter the information on line. If you want to join it. Read the Rules and Prizes Buy RCTB stickers from the Clam Friends. Each one you buy enables us to put about 400 clams in the bay. Be sure to tell the merchants (Clam Friends) that you are on the clam trail. Eat at their restaurants and buy things at their shops. They are the ones who sponsor the activity that enables us to put millions of clams in the bay.
RECLAM THE BAY RECEIVES A MAJOR NATIONAL AWARD Ocean County based ReClam The Bay is going to be the recipient of a major presented to the organization by the United States Department of Environmental Protection’s Regional Administrator, Ms. Judith A. Erick on April 27th , during a reception held at the EPA’s regional office in New York City. The citation states that “each year EPA searches for those who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to protecting and enhancing environmental quality and public health.” “The Environmental Quality Award is the highest recognition presented to the public protecting and enhancing environmental quality and public health.” Needless to say ReClam The Bay is thrilled and proud to receive this award on behalf of not only the members of ReClam The Bay, but also the Barnegat Bay Shellfish Restoration Program, our founder and its creator, and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Ocean County. “Without the efforts and support of the State, County and Rutgers Cooperative Extension, the receipt of this award would not have been possible” Rick Bushnell, President of ReClam the Bay was quoted as saying upon notification of the national award.

Purchasing a New Home
Our philosophy is to not only build loans but build relationships, and help guide you through the steps necessary to achieve a successful Real Estate Transaction.
Step 1: Get Your Finances in Order
Your credit reports are an ongoing look at how you manage your finances. You must know exactly what your credit reports say about your financial history before you apply for a mortgage, because the reports play an important role in the mortgage approval process and in determining the interest rate and other loan terms that a lender offers you. If you haven’t looked at your credit reports, you might be surprised at their contents, because errors are common.
Step 2: Get Familiar with the Mortgage Industry
Finding the right loan is crucial to your home buying success. We. can help you understand what is available to suit your needs. Their help and expertise will help you make an informed decision and they will guide you throughout the entire process
Step 3: Get Pre-Approved for a Mortgage
Do you know how much house you can afford? Probably not !Our Pre-approval gives you that competitive edge over other house hunters. Consider this scenario. A home seller gets two similar offers. One is accompanied by a letter from us that states she is pre-approved for a mortgage in the amount of the offer. The other has no supporting documents. Which offer do you think the seller will consider first?
Step 4: Determine Your Wants and Needs
Buying a home isn’t as difficult as you might think, even if you’re short on funds, but the process will go a lot smoother if you let us help you get familiar with your real estate market and narrow down your wants and needs before you start looking at houses.
Step 5: Learn to Work with Real Estate Agents
Real estate agents represent buyers, sellers, or both--and in some states they can work as neutral facilitators for either party. It’s essential to understand agent duties and loyalties before you make that first phone call.

Learning Life T

he two of us strolled down Bay Ave with our grandbabies, he and I. In the distance, other people’s grandchildren could be heard playing in the Beach Haven School playground. He looked at his grandson and I looked at my granddaughter. He and I turned to each other and smiled. New babies and a new romance--at our age. We too, have started a new life--together. Just when I thought I was set in my ways and destined to live alone, someone walked back into my life. Yes, he just knocked on the door and entered my world again. Years ago we had dated, but I was busy with my job and he was still raising his boys. We drifted apart in the currents of life. Babies are a mirror into the future. Watching him hold his grandson while his son watched him is a memory I will treasure for the rest of my life. Three generations united in love. When my little granddaughter says, “Hi Grandma”, I melt into today. Yesterday evaporates and tomorrow is a distant dream. Off to the beach we go. Sand buckets, shovels and her favorite wagon. My camera holds hundreds of images of her, time frozen in a moment on the beach. I dig in the sand with her. We build a castle that she can demolish and dig a hole that she can fill in. The beach is her world; she can do no wrong. The cycle of life continues. We each take our turn at living and move over so our children can have their turn. Our minds are full of memories, but if we are lucky, we have much more living to do. We must cherish everyday. Life is so short and for some it ends abruptly. Live as if you’ll live forever, live confidently and happily. Love and laugh and be kind. Beach Haven Elementary School celebrates its one hundredth birthday, proud and tall. I think of all the children heard playing outside a school built a century ago. So many children and grandchildren and great grandchildren have lived and learned and played, there. Life is amazing. Let us teach our children happiness. There is no happier sound than children laughing while at play. Our grandbabies will grow, new babies will be born and we will grow a little older, too. Life is change; embrace it.

Aikido
is a Japanese martial art literally translating to “the Way of harmonious spirit” that provides a means of self-defense without inflicting harm to the attacker. Known for its non-violent techniques, Aikido redirects the opponent’s energy using entering and turning movements finished with either a throw or a joint lock. Along with being a great source of exercise, Aikido provides the following benefits: • Alleviates stress • Increases flexibility, endurance and physical ability • Boosts self-confidence and self-esteem • Improves balance, coordination, awareness and concentration • Promotes mental, physical and spiritual health • Induces muscle development, weight loss and an overall positive outlook
Morihei Ueshiba, also known as “O Sensei” founded this art in the late 1920s combining his religious beliefs, philosophies and studies of other various martial arts (including Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu and judo). Aikido

also incorporates the principles and movements of both aiki-ken (sword) and aiki-jo (staff). Yoshimitsu Yamada, Shihan, 8th dan is a direct student of O Sensei, chief instructor of the New York Aikikai, and President of the United States Aikido Federation. An early ambassador of Aikido to the United States, Yamada Sensei helped spread the word and spirit of Aikido with his inspirational teaching style that promoted the art’s growth nationally and globally. The Long Beach Island Aikikai is honored to be a member of the United States Aikido Federation. All aikido students are welcomed to visit and train at our dojo. We are a traditional Japanese Aikido dojo under the direction of senior instructor, Shidoin 6th degree black belt Chester Griffin. All are always invited to watch class. We also hope that you will join us on the mat. Our staff will always work hard to make you feel comfortable and welcomed. The benefits of Aikido are vast and multi-dimensional for adults, teens and children. Since Aikido (when practiced properly) uses physics and not physi-
cal strength, this art is for anyone and everyone willing to try it regardless of size, age or gender.

Second Chance Pet Adoption Day
The younger girls scouts made many blankets and toys for the dogs and cats. All the rescues were so thrilled and in awe with all the pet supply donations and all the blankets that were made for them. Several rescues were adopted to their new forever homes. That’s what the event was all about finding homes for the dogs/cats. The police dog demo it was so cool to watch. The Boy Scout Troop 23 did an awesome job not selling food and drinks. All the scouts helped the rescues and vendors set up/ break down it was so wonderful having everyone help each other. We will be doing this again next year for a 2nd Annual and WOBM Starting in the back, Diane Modri, Madeline Leyh, Cali Modri, Rhys Hagen, Sophia Russo, Brianna Krebs, Chris Grayson, Kaitlyn Grayson, Hattie Kenduck, had asked if they can attend our Breanna Maier, Nicole Weichmann and Danielle Ardolina. event again.

The owner of LBI Products, Eileen Hessel invented a skin care product that would brighten and protect tattoo’s from fading. The colorful mermaid was created as the logo for Tattoo Brightener. Tattoo’s fade because of age, sun and free radicals. Eileen hired a PA lab to create a skin serum that would address the the impact that these elements have on skin. The formula contains six ingredients. The main ingredient is Astaxanthin, a sea derived red algae that has been recognized as the worlds most powerful antioxidant. The Tattoo Brightener is a silky, luxurious rejuvenation serum that works exceptionally well on all skin surfaces! When used on faces, chest, arms and legs women and men noticed in less than a week that their wrinkles began to fade and their skin was significantly softer and healthier looking. Eileen’s beach buddies liked the Tattoo Brightener so much that they wanted her to put it in a larger bottle and to call it something else. The following winter Eileen did exactly what her friends recommended and changed the name to Ocean 6 Illuminus. Unlike other products on the market Ocean 6 Illuminus contains no petroleum, alcohol, fragrance, preservat ives or para-bens.Ocean 6 Illuminus is excellent for people with sensitive skin. Eileen is excited about the fusion between health and the beauty benefits that Astaxanthin provides. Who would have thought that a tattoo brightener could be an amazing anti wrinkle serum with natural sunscreens. Eileen’s passion and inspiration has come from spending her summers in Beach Haven for the last 30 years. Ocean 6 is available at many stores on or near Long Beach Island. Eileen is working on other products containing Astaxanthin which will be launched this year. Ocean 6 Illuminus will help you maintain an end-

The process of my becoming a devoted public school teacher began on Kindergarten Career Day; I was five years old. Seared in my memory is the smell of freshly mowed grass and afternoon shadows silently creeping up the cinderblock walls of my classroom. PS 19 on 14th Street and First Avenue in Manhattan was an imposing brick building with a small patch of grass in front. That moment I knew what learning felt like. Twenty-five years later, I decided to retire from public school teaching so that I could fulfill my life purpose: open my own school. B9 School instills in the student and his/her family respect for the process of mastery of subject matter and friendly compassion while striving for one’s best learning. As another school year meanders to a close, parents and their children yearn for a successful end of the semester. I am a parent, the parent of a Duke University graduate. I appreciate dreams and the honor of being a part of realizing them. I welcome learners between the ages of two and eighty two for enrichment or remedial instruction in Spanish and/or English in an enjoyable atmosphere. I offer individual or small group instruction. Visit www.senoraonline.com and perhaps, together, we can end our school year with greater success than imagined. Judy Real learning…takes time, trust, and a teacher who knows this. –ljg

A Sea Gull’s Realm
For a decade or so, one particular Herring Gull developed a relationship with Loveladies resident, Stan Zdep. Dr. Zdep is a behavioral scientist and weekend fisherman who first noticed this gull because “He always seemed to be around.” After attracting Zdep’s attention, they developed a greater rapport, and eventually, the gull revealed the special capabilities of which he was capable.

Sea Sirens June Awakenings And, suddenly the island is alive with summer. Nothing really happens suddenly to those involved with the process of change. In fact, LBI has been readying itself for summer’s arrival since the first hints of spring, when fog as thick as cotton hovered about, turning car headlights into pairs of round white moons and crowds and traffic jams were a vague memory from before. LBI looks beautiful to our visitors because people have been working at it…for months. Working on streets and on the beach and in all my favorite stores behind closed doors. Restaurants, dark and sullen, all of a sudden are bright and warm, whetting my appetite for shore treats we’ve missed during the quiet dark months behind us. On cloudy days and on sunny days…fighting fatigue and the calendar, the people of LBI have been preparing and freshening the sand and sidewalks and storefronts for me! Horns and wheels and traffic lights have found their way back! Over the bay and all the way to LBI. Red and green. Christmas in June on our island. No longer is it just about me and the gulls, combing our private beach for treasures. Guys and gals and flocks of families have returned-- reclaiming their sandy kingdom, abandoned for too long. The island is awake! Signs on plate glass windows welcome us back! Flags are my siren that store doors are open! Was the beach this beautiful last August? When did it get so wide? Was the ocean always this cold? The bikes and the buggies…LBI never grows old! 38 LivingLBI Magazine
No more homework…no more books…no more teachers’ dirty looks…it’s June. Tattoos have waited long enough to be shown. Belly rings have yearned to be seen. Toenails have been polished and are so ready to curl about the flip flops that have been packed away, seemingly, forever. Can Memorial Day Weekend already be behind us? The first “unofficial” weekend of summer, a memory, has evaporated like morning fog over the bay. Hey, calendar-don’t rush me. Summer’s just begun. The count down is over. I’m counting on pleasure now, slow and sunny. Warm and delicious. Just me and the sea, the breeze and bare knees. The brides and the rides and the ever-changing tides. The kites and the sights, the dreams-- my dreams, left behind last Labor Day, or not yet realized, can happen now. I hear Incubus in some car radio, imploring, “If not now, when?” Singing to you, to me, to all of us with a history of school year endings, summer beginnings, yearly yearnings, long ago longings, searching for our belongings and the courage to “stand up and face the bright light, with no umbrella, no sunglasses.” It’s time. Let us welcome what is here.. It is June amidst the dunes. Come, sit by me; knee to knee. By the sea. The sirens of possibility stir awakening in me: June on LBI. Judy Horowitz www.SenoraOnline.com

A bottle of white a bottle of red ...... Perhaps a bottle of rosé on our favorite beach instead
“I’ll meet you any time you want, in our Italian Restaurant ”. We’ll sit and reminisce about the past and how we met on Long Beach Island . Your red boat, crossing over the bay to pick me up in Beach Haven . Dating by boat was so romantic. Remember the time we discovered that little white island of sand? Climbing out of the boat, I nearly stepped on a horseshoe crab. You laughed , I screamed , and we talked for hours. My favorite memory is smooching in the middle of the bay. No one around . A warm sun surrounded us and your arms locked around me as we rocked with the boat. You told me you loved me and slipped a ring on my finger. A bottle of wine with dinner. A walk on the beach under a full moon . A warm summer night. But most of all , YOU. That ’s what makes LBI a special place . u e yo v o L
