The Origins of Howard’s French Fried Lobster
Anyone who has spent enough time on LBI knows about Howard’s Seafood Restaurant’s famous French Fried Lobster. It is a summer staple and “must-do” for many vacationers and locals alike. But when, and how, did it come to be? Way, way back when in the early 1950’s, Long Beach Island was a much different place, at least as far as seafood restaurants go. Howard Sparks had just opened his eponymous restaurant, Howard’s Seafood, at the spot where Bert’s Luncheonette once stood. With not much more than a lunch counter and scattering of small tables, he set out to follow his dream.
were found just about anywhere a sign promised fresh seafood. He knew he needed something different, something over the top to make customers flock to Howard’s. He found his answer in French Fried Lobster. Succulent morsels of fresh lobster tail hand breaded and fried, served with plenty of lemon to squeeze and salty drawn butter to dip. Perfection! Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge
The Holgate Unit of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge is located at the southern tip of Long Beach Island and is part of Forsythe’s designated Wilderness Area. It consists of more than 400 acres of barrier beaches, dunes and tidal salt marsh. One of New Jersey’s last remaining undeveloped barrier islands, this Natural Heritage Priority Site is an important and productive area for beachnesting birds. This site has also been designated a globally significant IBA (important bird area) by National Audubon for supporting breeding Piping Plovers. Photos by Lisa Ball

The soft-shell is the blue crab
The soft-shell season is traditionally marked with the first full moon in May. At that time, the blue crab begins its molting season to accommodate its summer growth. The actual shedding of the shell can take anywhere from one to three hours, after which it must be removed or the hardening process will continue, reducing the quality of the soft-shell crab.

Sautéed Soft Crab 2 cups dry white wine ½ cup olive oil, plus one tablespoon for sautéing 2 garlic cloves, one mashed, one thinly sliced ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus 2 t for seasoning 8 live soft shell crabs, cleaned 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted ¼ cup flat-leaf parsley leaves, roughly chopped I n a large metal bowl, whisk together the wine, oil, garlic, pepper, and 1 teaspoon of the salt. Place the crabs in the bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Marinate the crabs for 15 minutes at room temperature. Place the flour in a medium shallow bowl. Slick a very large skillet with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil and place it over medium-high heat. Remove the crabs from the marinade, shake off the excess liquid, and transfer them to the bowl of flour. One at a time, coat both sides of all the crabs with flour (only a light dusting is necessary) and set aside. Place half of the crabs into the hot skillet and sauté them for about 4 to 5 minutes per side, or until the crabs have reddened and are slightly crispy. Remove the crabs from the skillet and drizzle them with a few drops of butter, and sprinkle with a little of the parsley and some of the remaining 2 teaspoons of salt. Serve immediately.

Sea Stars
Starfish or Sea stars are the beautiful stars of the sea. Most species have 5 arms, but some have as many as 40 ! The smallest is ones are only one inch in diameter and the largest ones can be up to 3 feet in diameter. There are nearly 2,000 different species. Sea stars live in saltwater, they are found in all of the oceans from the cold sea floor to the warm tropical waters. Sea stars are related to sea urchins, sea cucumbers and sand dollars. They are all Echinderms, that means “spiny skin� it helps protect them from predators. They have tiny tube feet that gives them suction to crawl on rocks and the sea floor. Starfish prey on mollusks-such as clams, mussels and oysters. They open the shells with their suctioned arms and extrude their stomachs out of their mouth and eat their prey, when finished digesting their food they draw their stomachs back into their bodies. Predators of the Starfish are fish, birds, shrimp, otters, sea turtles, snails, crabs and even other Sea stars. The amazing thing about Starfish is that they have the ability to regenerate an arm if it is severed. All of there organs are in there arms, so just a portion of an arm can grow a whole new Starfish.

Maritime Forest Trail
One of the last remnants of maritime forest on Long Beach Island is found at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park. The forest, which is dominated by Black Cherry, Sassafras, Eastern Red Cedar, and American Holly, is an important

resting and feeding area for migratory birds on their long journey to and from their breeding sites. The Maritime Forest Trail is a 1/5-mile long, self-guided loop trail through this unique environment.

Wild Minks on LBI
In ran what I thought was a ferret. It was being chased by two young girls. We all thought that someone lost their ferret and we were trying to catch it. Right into my store, LBI Creative Minds, it came running. We shut the door and called Maria at the Pet Stop to come next door and help. Maria grabbed a blanket and pet carrier and the mink started to scream. Then we knew it wasn’t a run away pet. It was terrified of getting caught. Hiding in the corner with no way out, the little mink was finally caught. Maria gently lifted the cute little mink and put him in a pet carrier. Popcorn Zoo is now relocating him. I didn’t know that wild minks lived on LBI. Apparently they live by the bay and eat fish. They are nocturnal so we don’t get to see them very often. Why this one was out during the day and running around Schooner’s Wharf is a mystery. But it was exciting to see the cute little mink. -Lisa LivingLBI.com

The streets are quiet and lights just blink, they lost their purpose. With cool nights and low humidity, the clouds float high in the sky. The lazy sun awakes to warm the air.

Fall is a wonderful time of the year. It is a time of reflection. The busy days of summer are over and there is time to think. It’s time to prepare for the winter by gathering supplies and planning the holidays. It is time to watch the sunset.

The First International LBI Kite Festival -- LBI Fly -- will be held Columbus Day weekend, October 9, 10, 11,12, 2015, and will feature the following events, in several locations. LBI Fly will host celebrity kite fliers from the United States and Canada. The festival will feature kite performers, giant kite fliers and kite artists who have flown at prestigious and large festivals around the world. Several teams of sport kite fliers will fly to choreographed musical routines throughout the weekend. They will amaze the spectators with their intricate movements and complete control of their dual line and quad kites. Demonstrations and a learn to fly area will be near the sport kite field for people who want to try to fly a dual or quad kite. Giant inflatable kites and single line artist kites will be featured. Many of the inflatable kites, some as large as a school bus are in the shapes of whales, stingrays, octopuses, a giant duck. There will also be candy dropped from kites for the kids and races with inflatable parachute-like kites at specific times and ages during the weekend. Look for the schedule of events on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/LBIFLY). Bayview park will feature kids activities including kite making with South Jersey Kite Flyers . There will be miniature kite making demonstrations and kids can learn to make a miniature monarch butterfly kite. The kids will be welcomed to fly at the beach in the public fly area at 68th Street Brant Beach. Face painting and a band will also be part of the fun. Several kite organizations will be represented including the American Kite Fliers Association, South Jersey Kite Flyers, Winds over Washington Kite Fliers, and the Connecticut Kite Fliers. 2015 National Championship Regatta Winners Jeff Bonanni, of Toms River Yacht Club, and an All-American collegiate sailor, was the skipper of T-73 with team Mike O'Brien, Matthew Goetting, Maggie Condon and won the 2015 E-Scow National Championship at Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club Sept 10-13, in Beach Haven, NJ. Bonanni and his crew won four of the six race Regatta, organized as the 57th E Scow Nationals by the National Class E Scow Association (NCESA). Second place went to Harry Melges IV of Lake Geneva, WI and 3rd place went to defending champion from Lake Minnetonka-Minneapolis Sam Rogers. See the E-Scow Facebook page for photos, videos, and comments. "The event was spectacular and as fun as it gets," said Lon Schoor, the NCESA Commodore. "Chris Fretz and Laura Darling, of Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club and Regatta co-chairpersons, put together a team of 100 Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club volunteers. What a wonderful club they are all a part of. They should be so proud of the success this Regatta was," added Schoor. The club has twice won the prestigious St. Petersburg Trophy for regatta management and excellence.
Special Awards/Trophies went to: Jeff Bonanni was awarded the following: Keuka Trophy, Iver C Johnson, BBYRA Trophy, Pewaukee Trophy - all for race wins. Also the Bilge Pullers Trophy for winning the Regatta and his crew won the Robert E Weldon Trophy. Harry Melges IV of Lake Geneva WI (on BH-8) won the coveted Ferguson Trophy awarded to the National Ranking Championship. Kyle Rogachenko of Toms River Yacht Club (on T-76) won the Rookie Award. This is awarded to the highest placing first time skipper at a National Championship Regatta. Kyle also won race 5, the Chautauqua Trophy. Clay Johnson won the new Tarporley Hunt Trophy for winning race 6. Richard Wight (MA-10) won the Masters Trophy Kelly McGlynn of Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club (LE-13) won the Youth Trophy. McGlynn also was awarded the Top Women's Skipper trophy. Maggie Condon was awarded the Women's Championship trophy. Blair Condon was awarded the Women's Corinthian Trophy. The Torch Lake Team Trophy went to Toms River Yacht Club.

Supersized Beaches I found a pleasant surprise when I finally climbed the mountain of sand at the end of our street and viewed our new beach for the first time. I never thought I’d be able to climb a sand mountain that high up, but to my surprise, it wasn’t that difficult. The view was breathtaking from the top of the mount and our new beach is amazing. It has a natural look without jetties, dune fence and stairs. I’m sure this will change but for now I am enjoying the natural beauty. The waves didn’t seem to mind being pushed back into the ocean and the sand looks the same as it did before. It is the same beach but supersized. I like the new wide open beach. Plenty of room to fly a kite. With summer over, the dogs get to enjoy this sand playground. -Lisa
