Marc and I met on match.com. Living over an hour apart and dating was rough with 3 children between the two of us so after 6 months we decided it was time to move in together. When we got engaged, we wanted to have a small, intimate wedding, near our home. We live in Bedminster NJ and I had lots of friends that went to LBI for their summer vacations. I started looking online and reading about weddings in LBI. I was instantly hooked and decided this was where we wanted to have our family gather. I found the Wed and Bed and it looked perfect for us, our children, and our parents. I sent an email to my siblings asking them to look into renting houses nearby and explained that next summer we would be having a beach ceremony, just the family. A few weeks later we decided to head out and see the neighborhood. We were excited to be having our wedding on the shore at a time when we knew local businesses needed to get back up and running and business was slow. When we stood on the beach by the Wed and Bed, we felt it was just perfect. The beach was small and intimate, steps from the house, just like the ceremony we envisioned. And, like our vision, our ceremony was beautiful. Simple, powerful, and moving. With just our immediate family surrounding us. Everyone had found local accommodations and we had a 3 day weekend, including Friday night dinner on the marina, Saturday cocktails, ceremony and dinner (followed by some dancing in the living room!) and Sunday brunch at the house. We couldn’t have been happier with our special event and our family was so happy to be part of it.

The Annual LBI Run—A Year After Sandy

Some ran for fun Some had other reasons All had hoped to have the wind behind them All were lucky not to have to fight rain After much time and effort needed to train And the strength of will needed to refrain From succumbing to the inevitable pain All shared a single common thing to gain: An annual island tradition, a promise to be kept And the satisfaction of a challenge met History once again has been written by those who joined and those who cheered and those who helped— all who persevered. Congratulations to all who participated, all who encouraged, all who volunteered, all who cared, and all who dared….on your island, our island, LBI.

Locals’ Vacation

We love the summer with all the excitement but the fall is just spectacular. Our summer work is done, and we finally get a chance to rest. How we love our beach. Here it is October and we have blue skies, warm breezes and our toes in the sand. There is no one around and it is so relaxing. The afternoon sun is still warm yet the cool night air makes great sleeping weather. As I sit typing this article at my computer, I feel the sun through the window, I smell the ocean breeze, I hear the sound of crashing waves. I must get up, walk up to the beach and rest. Work can wait until I watch the sun set into the bay.

Superstorm Sandy and our business… My brother, David Johnson, owns Johnson Masonry LLC and I work with him. When Sandy hit our home town area, we witnessed the devastating effects of the storm. Our hearts went out to those friends, neighbors, clients and colleagues that lost their homes, businesses and lifestyles. The first week or so when utility services were down, communication systems were unreliable and life as we knew it was at a standstill, we went from one job, or home, or neighbor, or shelter to the next, helping and volunteering as best we could as work could not proceed. So many shell shocked faces, and too many unknowns lay before us. There were boats on the roads, boats against/in houses, docks piled up, lines and trees down, and no one could get on LBI. And when clean up began, it was loss. Prior to the storm we had built a foundation on Cedar Bonnet Island. Our cement mixer was on site and we were granted contractor’s permission to gain entry. With almost 25 years in business, David had never seen anything like this. The foundation was beaten down, the mixer on its side filled with sand and debris. One of our first priorities became to set the foundation right. It seems like the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since. There were many blessings to come out of the storm. It brought people together like never before. So many people donated time, effort, cleaning supplies, food and money. My church family on LBI lost use of both church buildings for months and our families were scattered and displaced. Many came together to rip out, dry out, repair and replace the damage. Christ in Action sent an entire team after we met one of their organizers, Denny Nissley, at home depot. And Manahawkin United Methodist Church graciously allowed us to worship, both Kynett United Methodist Church and Beach Haven Terrace United Methodist Church at their service, and when it was apparent that recovery would be awhile, they let us have their sanctuary for our own service in between their early and later service. 8 LivingLBI One Year After the Storm 2013

We made many good friends during the aftermath of Sandy. Some of our best work experiences has been our many days at Islander Motel on Central Ave and 14th in Ship Bottom. Anne and Joe Clark, the owners, were so gracious, they were always on site with coffee, waters and warm and friendly banter. We literally rebuilt the floors, walls, and put in a basketball court so we were there many days over several months and feel as though we have made wonderful friends!

Ask anyone in construction and they will tell you things have changed, and continue to change. Building codes, materials, etc. The concrete gets thicker, the metal bars are thicker, hurricane straps are stronger, foundations are higher, etc. We are building to survive the next storm. We continue to battle a higher water table. Johnson Masonry works all over south Jersey. We have been in Leonardo, Highlands, Middletown, Oceangate, Waretown, Forked River, Manahawkin, LBI, West Creek, Tuckerton, Little Egg Harbor, Absecon and Brigantine. Johnson Masonry does sidewalks, aprons, foundations, bottom enclosure slabs, driveways, stamped concrete, cultured stone and more. We have a website: www. johnsonmasonryllc.com and a facebook page. So if you see our white trucks with the brick emblem and Johnson Masonry on it, come over and say hello. Feel free to call us at 609-457-8236 we offer free estimates.

Many of our friends have been struggling this past year. The expense of repairing stores and loss of income from a slow summer has left us in serious debt. Many of our advertisers could not afford to advertise this year. I would love to have offered free advertising for all businesses that were affected by the storm but unfortunately I can’t afford to publish this magazine without our wonderful advertisers.

Many small businesses that were affected by Superstorm Sandy, did not receive any financial help from FEMA or from organizations that collected money for Sandy relief. They were on their own. You can help keep local businesses stay in business.

OneYear Later Hard Work and Perseverance

My house had no water damage. However, sand was everywhere. The sand under my truck and van was mixed with wood, stone and other debris. Two by fours were wedged under the truck and into the tire. A tow truck had to come to remove it. It was covered by insurance. Since the van had no comprehensive, I decided to dig it out by myself. Carefully, I removed the sand one shovel at a time. Days later, the van was cleared of sand, and I started the engine. Next step was the tow truck. 10 LivingLBI One Year After the Storm 2013

The wind kept blowing, the water washed over the sand, our dunes disappeared by morning. But we are strong and determined. We rebuilt our homes with love. We love our L BI.

Once you start renovating, it is hard to stop. After the storm, I needed to have my gas turned back on. The plumber came and told me that I needed a new fireplace insert. I had wanted to replace it but had put it off. Now that I had no choice, I replaced the unit. Now I had a new fireplace, I also needed new windows. No sense in replacing the fireplace with leaky old windows, right? Sand had to be removed from the front yard, the fence had to be replaced and

the front steps were a bit mangled. The list went on and on. All of a sudden we started noticing every little thing. The tree that hung over the car needed to be trimmed and the deck needed power washing. We couldn’t blame the storm for our lack of maintenance but the storm got us off of the couch!

The trailers have been removed and the land sits empty. My heart goes out for those who lost their homes. Holgate will never be the same. New houses built high in the sky will replace these narrow nostalgic icons.

Mending Fences

Spring’s warm, gentle breeze after long winter’s freeze Hot summer sun crashing waves and beach fun Fall’s quiet whisper making night air crisper It’s been a long year shedding many a tear Winter’s lonely night day’s glistening bright A full circle’s season Gave us a reason Our fences are mended our beaches are tended. Putting the past behind A new year we will find. Lisa Ball LivingLBI.com 13

Stairs to Nowhere... The beach looked so strange in the days following the storm. Stairs to nowhere, exposed pilings, angled utility poles and debris were the eerie scenes I photographed almost a year ago. A sunny sky and calm sea followed me as I walked along the tattered beach front homes. Emptiness surrounded me with a deafening silence. Now, I walk the same stretch of beach and am truly amazed by how much sand was bulldozed back in place. I would like to thank all of those who worked so hard to rebuild our dunes. Thank you for a job well done.

Girlfriends, Ice Cream and

Sunsets on LBI

It’s September! I have worked throughout the summer as a lifeguard and camp counselor and earned my certification as a women’s self defense instructor. I had an amazing experience in the kettle ponds and ocean on Cape Cod with my boyfriend and his family.

My parents and I had a fantastic trip to check out colleges in Boston. I am a senior in high school and on the cusp of figuring out my next big step in life. A step my parents can not--and will not-dictate to me. I have a decision to make --where will I go to college? I have lots of work ahead of me to finalize my common application and polish my essay. I am beginning my supplemental essays and all through this I soul search. What is important to me? Who is important to me? At which of these schools can I see myself spending the next four years of my life? In the midst of all this excitement, some of which is unsettling, I know where I need to be: Long Beach Island. I have grown up here in a way: weekends, holidays with family in their big yellow house on Engleside Avenue, watching my parents and uncle navigate the maze of rebuilding the water ravaged first floor of our house. I ask my girlfriends if they can come for the weekend. We stay up late walking the beach. We go for ice cream, and the second night, the scooper knows us by name. We laugh a lot, we stargaze, we cry about lost loves and friends and loved ones we are missing and help each other know it is good to dream of our futures. Every night we go to the bay at sunset. It is the beautiful fiery sunset that brings a sense of calm and comfort to us: me, in particular. September on the Island is a heaven for me. No matter what waters I am navigating in my life - whether happy or sad - mundane or exciting - I know the sunset on Long Beach Island is a steady and comforting presence to me. When my mind is racing at the end of the day, I can watch the sunset and know I did the best I could do that day and I am reminded that tomorrow provides me another opportunity to love and to laugh and to be my best! -Marley Pulz 22 LivingLBI One Year After the Storm 2013

Sea Sirens: Bountiful Blessings and Gifts of Grace As if by some supernatural force, Long Beach Island is bare, again. The colorful summer parade of scantily clad young ladies is long gone—as are bare-chested guys, who have also made their way across the causeway— back to autumn schedules and winter routines, temporarily put on hold as summer promised other gifts. Noticeably empty, too, is the boulevard; bicycles and baby strollers, surfboards and skateboards are few, while stilled traffic lights and more liberal speed limits are among the rewards year ’round islanders enjoy during this season of other gifts. A meager few flags staunchly state their loyal presence through the changing moods, mute colors and wind blown mysteries of this season on the island, often undervalued by those who do not experience deep autumn on Long Beach Island. We first introduced our son Bryan to the beach when he was in preschool. It was one of those soft, golden fall days, when some marigolds continued to bloom and blossom amidst those already dry and done. The moment seemed all the more precious, for we knew days like that one were numbered. The blaze before the bleak. From time to time, a Monarch would flutter by, on its way where they go, long after the post-summer sales and tourists’ final farewells. Our boy dug and dug and sifted the endless sand through his tiny fingers as billowy clouds floated above and the tide crept up the beach under our watchful eye. He cared not, about upcoming seasonal holidays or the lure of costly gifts waiting on store shelves. Bryan simply continued throughout the afternoon, to dig and sift and squint at a horizon that was wider, even, than our love for our child. Occasionally, a gull would land close by, no less hopeful than the fisherman in the distance, and we would be awakened from our restful, thankful trance, lulled by the sound and rhythm of the endless waves, the spray of the sea in the sky, and a horizon that connected it all. We were thankful to just be a part of the day. It was enough. We were enough. We had enough. Do most of us need the glut of holiday objects that stores begin to sell long before fall temperatures drop and the sun sinks into the ocean earlier each day? Do most of us have enough spooky stuff and holiday decorations by now, after all? The Sea Siren of Bounty does a wonderful balancing act with The Sea Siren of Grace, as they remind us that seasonal beauty can occasionally be enough—a banquet for all senses.

sunsets and blistering sand go…yet, right now, joy can sparkle like the sea in pale November sunlight and colorful Christmas lights that warm the windows through the winter months. This holiday season I vow to heed my father’s words that mingle with the wet, thickening gray fog, “Count your blessings while you are enjoy them; otherwise, you miss half the blessings.” When the barriers that separate “we” and “they” and “us” and “them” blur like the boundaries between the sky and the sea and the sand, will we no longer celebrate the gifts and grace of this glorious season on a particular day…but, all season long--on your island, our island, LBI. “Remember this—very little is needed to make a happy life.”—Marcus Aurelius Written by Judy Horowitz www.senoraonline.com

On the beach decades later, there are still certain days when it is hard to tell whether it is still October or whether November has arrived. Sky, sea, and sand join, a cornucopia of peace for today…and a harvest of plenty that will be here, tomorrow. Summer love and laughter. Disappointment and despair. Seashore discoveries and lost treasures. They, too, have gone where blazing LivingLBI.com 33

“Turtle Girl” and the Last Release of the Season By Kathy Lacey/Terrapin Nesting Project

The third year of the “Terrapin Nesting Project” was a challenge in many ways. Memorial Day Weekend marks the ‘official’ start of terrapin nesting season, however, this year the weather was cool and rainy and the first females didn’t start coming to beach until the second week of June. Grace, aka the “Turtle Girl”, her mom Tracey and the rest of us knew we had a long season ahead of us. With an incubation period of 60 to 90 days the first hatchlings wouldn’t start emerging until the second week of August, and then only if the weather cooperated! It didn’t. We had the wettest season in recorded meteorological history, not exactly conducive to incubating and hatching terrapins. Nesting season was one for the records. The community was on full alert and many new volunteers joined the project. This was a rough year for many people, still recovering from the effects of “Sandy”, but they still made the time to come out; to protect the females crossing the bay roads, track the girls to mark their nests and guard the nests from predators until someone could get to the site to ‘pull the nest’. Once the females started nesting they came out in unprecedented numbers! By July 21st, Grace had relocated many of the one hundred plus nests laid in unsuitable locations to the hatchery in High Bar Harbor, more than 1,400 eggs, way to go ‘Turtle Girl’! Other nests were left on homeowner’s properties if they were deemed to be in suitable locations. These ‘natural nests’ were covered with protective ‘corrals’ and monitored throughout their incubation period. release of 1,279 new terrapins from the hatchery and many more from the ‘natural nests’! Predators have always been a problem for the terrapin nests. If left untended, most nests will succumb to predation within hours of being laid by raccoons and more recently by the American Crow. These crafty, highly intelligent corvids track the female terrapins from the bay and wait for her to lay her clutch. The bolder ones sit behind her and pluck the eggs out of the ground as she deposits them. Others watch until the nest is covered, then go in and feast on the eggs. Grace and I have found nests by following crows! Volunteers had to be diligent about tracking, marking and protecting the freshly laid nests until they could be accessed for either relocation or covered with ‘corrals’ for protection. “Terrapin Tracking” is a time consuming, exhausting, and sometimes unrewarding job. The females may dig many ‘false nests’ before actually depositing her clutch. Sometimes she returns to the bay without nesting, only to return another day and go through the whole process again. This is the hardest volunteer job anyone could take on, and yet, thankfully, so many people do. For that I am truly grateful! We are making a difference. The first nests started hatching in August. Grace and I were ready! When the hatchlings emerged they were collected and placed in freshwater kiddie pools to hydrate them prior to release. The pools were a popular gathering spot for children and adults of all ages and a wonderful

opportunity for Grace, Tracey and me to ‘talk terrapin’. Many of these visitors also joined us in the releases and will be joining us next year as volunteers! Nothing is cuter than a new hatchling still sporting an ‘egg tooth’. The ‘egg tooth’ is a small, hard, sharp prominence on the ‘nose’ or upper jaw of the embryonic reptile used to pierce the egg shell during hatching. Its job done, it soon falls off. As the hatchlings emerged, the releases continued. This season we expanded the program to include nests from Holgate and Beach Haven. These hatchlings were released on the southern end of the Island where their nests originated. The last three releases were on the north end. More than 500 Photo by Greg Durgin healthy hatchlings were placed in the estuaries on the north end of the Island bringing the total number of hatchlings successfully relocated, incubated and released for the project’s third year to 1,279! Outstanding! Soon they will tuck into the marshes for their winter hibernation. In spite of all the obstacles they face, the terrapins, with the support of the community are making a comeback. After months of caring for the incubating hatchlings, it’s tough to say good bye. We’ve done all we can to insure they survive their first year, now it’s up to them. They have a vital role to fill in restoring the health of the salt marshes and the bay’s ecosystem. Be safe little ones, we’ll be thinking of you. I recently returned from California where I received an award for ‘Outstanding Achievement’ from the Sierra Club for our work on the “Terrapin Nesting Project”. I’d like to thank everyone who has worked so hard on the project for the past three years, this award belongs to you. And Grace, get ready for next year, we’re going to be busy!
