Can someone tell us where the summer went? It came and went in the blink of an eye. We’re not complaining, it’s just that we never got to put our feet in the sand or water at all. We saw some beautiful views from customer’s homes of the beach and bay while working, but it just didn’t do it for us. That being said, we were fortunate and thankful that, in this economy, The Salt Box was busy. Our returning customers and new customers kept us running. Since we do it all, design, space planning, color consultations, window treatments (hard and soft), upholstery, custom furniture, slipcovers, and yes, boat cushions, we worked 24/6 (we are closed on Sunday) to get projects complete in a timely manner.

Not as much as I love Mommy and Daddy but I really love Summer time! I was born in the Summer time. I had my first birthday in the Summer time. I learned how to walk in the Summer time. Summer's been good to me! I have a pretty busy life now that I'm one year old. I like going to the beach, wrestling with my Uncle Mike-visiting my Grandma-eating cheese doodles -giving Noelle kisses, sitting on Joeys lap, running around in my diaper, pulling Brielle's hair -now that's fun! And standing in front of the air conditioner-I really like that one! That's what I love about summer time! But I hear winter can be fun too. My cousins Billy and Caprese keep telling me about this chubby guy with a beard that brings presents!!! I can't wait for that! I'll check in with you and let you know what's going on. hen was the last time you drove over the LBI Causeway and through Mud City to Bay Avenue in historic Downtown Manahawkin? Who remembers the Manahawkin Drive-In? Send us your old photos and tell us your stories. We may include them in our next issue. I remember the Manahawkin Drive-In. Sometimes we’d get “down the shore” late at night and as we passed by the Manahawkin Drive-In while a movie was playing. It was another landmark telling us we were close to the beach. We’d get so excited Friends of my parents owned the Manahawkin Diner located on Rt 72 near the Drive-In. Back then there was so much land surrounding the buildings. They lived in one of those little bungalows on the lagoon. Built on a slab, they were low to the ground. Back then, I don’t remember any flooding.

Being from Toms River, I pretty much kept to Seaside Heights and Island Beach State Park on those hot summer days and crazy summer nights of my youth, Long Beach Island was always on my radar though-I dreamed of owning one of those big gorgeous houses where you can walk out the back door onto the beach. Still working on that one! Although not a native to LBI I sure can appreciate the beauty and pleasures this Island holds. LBI is my new love. Beautiful beaches, captivating sunsets, salty sea air, cute shops, local artists bicycles everywhere and the reason for my existence FRESH SEAFOOD! Okay you got me, I’m a foodie!

August 5th was the Viking Village Antique and Col-
lectible Show. The show, which was held from 9am to 5pm at 19th & Bayview in Barnegat Light NJ, at the historic commercial fishing village, had record-breaking numbers of shoppers . There was something for everyone- and they all left with a true treasure or a fun or funky find. Even Santa Claus was there. Over 60 dealers provided a sea of fresh merchandise: Country and Shabby Chic Furniture, Architectural and Industrial Findings, Nautical Items, Textiles and Vintage Clothing, Kitchenware, Stoneware, Postcards, Jewelry, Collectibles and Memorabilia. Highlights of the show included a beautiful blue apothecary shown by Bill Lovgren of Point Pleasant Beach NJ , refurbished cargo airline trunks Matt White sold from Recycling the Past went for $3000.00, and a cast iron dog on a chain shown by Kyle Kinter of Trenton NJ retailed for $4500 had a buyer early in the show. Some other unique things on the field were the mahogany back end of a boat called “Power Play” ,an advertising umbrella reading “G. Underwood Reliable Clothier, Sckuykill Haven Pa. “ and a 1950 era handmade Ferris wheel with lights finds offered by The Seawife. Traveling from over six states were many profitable dealers , including Matt White from Recycling The Past, Barnegat NJ; Bill Lovgren of Point Pleasant Beach NJ; The Grings of Ocean City NJ; Jim Chamberlain of Cham-

A Half Day on the Bay S
ummer is over and I can finally relax. Don’t get me wrong, I love summer but all summer long I worked very hard at relaxing. Spending the day at the beach is no picnic on the bay. Packing up the “stuff” and dragging it to the beach in the hot sun only to unpack and set up your little private spot on a crowded section of hot sand is not what I call a vacation. September is a vacation! Less traffic, beautiful weather and cool nights are perfect days to enjoy this wonderful island. When my kids were young, we spend almost everyday on the beach. Since we live on the island all year long, the beach doesn’t feel like a vacation. When ever I needed to get away, I’d turn to the bay. We’d pack a lunch, buy some bait and rent a boat. All four of us would shove off the dock in our own little island! We would find the perfect spot for crabbing then catch crabs and talk for hours. “Don’t rock the boat,” I’d say as the boys leaned over to pull up the string with a crab attached to bunker. They’d scoop up the crab with a net with a surprised look on their face. Even though they have caught crabs for years, each crab was as if it was the first they ever caught. I had them all to myself on the little boat on the bay. Their sweet faces, are locked in my heart. I smile when I think back and can almost feel the wind blowing my hair. I’m looking forward to spending a half day on the bay with my granddaughter and my grandson.

Crabbing Crabbing season in this area normally runs from early June to late October. The best times of the day for crabbing are early morning and late afternoon but it is not uncommon to catch them all day long. Crabs can be caught in traps or by using hand lines to lure the crab towards a net to be scooped up. The traps are more consistent but many use the hand lines because they are more fun and challenging. Crabs can also be caught with different types of bait. The most popular with crabbers in this area is frozen bunker because they’re both relatively cheap and easy to handle. Lastly, be careful of the claws because they are strong and give a good pinch. Crabs can be picked up and carried by their flipper like swimming legs since this is out of reach of their claws. To keep your catch alive in the boat keep them covered, wet, and cool in a bushel basket. This is easily done by keeping them out of the sun with a wet towel on top and occasionally dunking the basket in the water on longer days of crabbing. Don’t keep crabs submerged in buckets of water for any length time because they will quickly deplete the oxygen in the water and suffocate. To take them home keep them on top of wet newspaper in a cooler filled with ice. Discard dead crabs.

Sea Gulls
on LBI typically mate in April and by late May a full clutch of eggs has been produced. The nests are almost always built directly on the ground. Sedge islands are favorite places, with Clam Island off High Bar Harbor being location to hundreds of nests. Herring Gulls tend to be year-round residents, and they typically begin nest-building before the Laughing Gulls arrive, and hence, they are able to select the best locations. This year, however, all sea gulls faced a major catastrophe when extremely high tides in May inundated many nests after the incubation process had begun. Some of the nests literally were washed away, and there were reports of floating nests in the bay with a parent still trying to incubate the eggs. In some instances where a nest was totally washed away, a recycling of the egg production process took place took place, and the gulls established a new nest. This was not the norm, however, and where the nests remained in place with compromised eggs, the female still continued the incubation process. Gestation, the period between egg laying and egg hatching for gulls is 26-28 days. Many continued the incubation process far beyond this, hoping that the eggs would eventually hatch.
They finally realized that this was not to be, and many pairs of gulls stayed together for a short time, then they flew their separate ways, as is typical of their species. Seas gulls usually mate for life, but they spend time together only during the nesting season. Fledglings can be recognized by their mottled brown color designed to camouflage them while in the nests. They will retain all or most of this color until they reach three years of age when they will take on the color of their parents. In August of every year we typically see a great number of these immature birds. They are virtually the same size as their parents and seem to constantly be harassing them for food. This is an important learning period in their lives, and it will continue for approximately three months. Sometimes it extends into the winter, but because of the scarcity of food, if a fledgling has not learned to feed itself by this time, it typically will not survive. Crazy for Cannoli
CANNOLI FILLING
2 lbs. Ricotta cheese 2 tsp. vanilla 2 c. confectioners sugar (sifted) (1/4 c. half and half or milk if mixture is too stiff) Drain Ricotta cheese to eliminate any excess liquid (in strainer or colander.) Whip cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla in mixer until smooth and creamy (add cream or milk if too thick.) When mixture appears creamy, place about 2 cups in a blender and whip until smooth. Empty blender, continue to add remaining cheese mixture by this proportion in blender and whip until all of the recipe is finished. Place filling in a bowl and chill until ready to fill puffs. Mixture thickens after if cools. If puffs are filled too far ahead, they will get soggy. When puffs are filled, dust with powdered sugar.
Quick easy CANNOLI CUPS! Make cups out of refrigerated pie crust, cookie dough or pre-made pastry
CANNOLI SHELLS 1 3/4 c. unsifted flour 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tbsp. granulated sugar 1 egg 2 tbsp. firm butter cut into sm. pieces 1/4 c. dry Marsala 1 egg white, slightly beaten Sift flour with salt and granulated sugar. Make a well in the center. In it place egg and butter. Stir with a fork, working from center out, to moisten flour mixture. Add wine, 1 tablespoon at a time, until dough begins to cling together. Use your hands to form dough into a ball. Cover and let stand for 15 minutes. Roll dough out on floured board about 1/4 inch. Cut into 3 1/2-inch circles. Roll with rolling pin, roll circles into ovals. Wrap around cannoli forms. Seal edge with egg white. Turn out ends of dough to flair slightly. Fry two to three at a time in deep hot fat for about 1 minute or until lightly golden. Remove with tongs to paper towels to drain; let cool about 5 seconds; then slip out cannoli form, holding shell carefully. Cool shells before filling.

Drama in the Deep
R
odney clung tightly to the blade of eel grass he shared with tiny mussels at the bottom of Barnegat Bay. The full moon shone brightly enough to cast shadows on the sandy bottom, and like silent ghosts, blue claw crabs slid along the surface of the water in search of dense grass patches where they could begin their molting process in relative obscurity. By dawn they will have backed out of their old and stained armor and be in the process of hardening new shells. They will still be vulnerable to predators, including their own species. The incoming tide had reached flood stage and would now remain slack until the ebb tide began. The stem of grass around which Rodney had wrapped his tail now stood starkly still and upright. His eyes, operating independently, were in constant motion looking for danger which might approach from anywhere. Seahorses were by no means fast swimmers, but now that his brooding pouch was laden with eggs, his movement was even further restricted. The next half hour or so would be the most dangerous time of his life, since he was almost totally exposed in the bright moonlight. At night, color changes designed to camouflage himself were of no use. To the careful observer his form next to the eel grass blade could give his presence away. He had to be still--very still. The first hint of trouble was the appearance of a pod of grass shrimp. They were normally a source of food for him, but there were also larger creatures in the deep that were fond of shrimp. If the shrimp were noticed by any of them, he could be in deep trouble. And sure enough, a large male crab had spotted the crustaceans and was moving toward them. Rodney immediately slid down the blade of grass, and when he reached the sandy floor, he began to swim in a direction away from the approaching crab. He must not, however, be caught on the open bottom. He had to use the cover of the grass as much as possible. Fortunately, the crab did not seem to notice him, and it closed in on the shrimp. It reached out and grabbed one while the rest of them scattered. Rodney had now wrapped his tail around a new blade of grass in a somewhat more dense patch. The grass 30 LivingLBI September 2012
blades still continued to reach up toward the moon under the influence of the slack tide. The moonlight seemed to expose all who sought shelter, and Rodney clutched the stem tightly and attempted to press tightly up against it. This time he was much lower on the grass blade, thereby reducing his silhouette against the brightness above. Then he spotted it! A large eel was making its way slowly through the grass, its wriggling movements designed to flush any small life out of their hiding places. It was too late for Rodney to flee. His only hope was to remain motionless so that he might not be spotted. Luck was not with him, however, and the eel had surely seen him. It approached with a definite mission in mind, and when it was only eighteen inches from the place where Rodney held on for dear life, the bay floor before him seemed to erupt in a cloud of sand as a striped bass pounced on the approaching eel. In a desperate attempt to escape, the free tail of the eel flailed in all directions, adding to the murkiness of the water. And this reduced visibility is what enabled Rodney to escape unnoticed. He scurried away from the clash to avoid being crushed in the turmoil, and only when he had swum an additional twenty feet from the scene did he seek refuge in another clump of grass. He tried to swim as deeply into the vegetation as possible, and when he reached a most desirable spot, he again attached himself. Then, in what seemed like a breath of new life, he felt a definite and welcome movement of the water. It was ever so slight at first, then slowly became stronger and stronger. The tide at last had begun to recede, and soon he could no longer see the moon because the eel grass, bending in efforts to follow the tide, had formed what seemed to be a thatched layer over his hiding place. He rested in the darkness now that his time of extreme danger had passed. But the dawn had not yet arrived. A short distance away, a crab completed her emergence from a worn and battered shell.
