WELCOME TO WINTER It was a great pleasure to meet Wallabies hero, Nick FarrJones and his wonderful family, including their adorable puppy, George (starring on this edition’s cover!) Leading the Wallabies to their 1991 Rugby World Cup victory it's certain that Nick lives by his mantra 'to not die wondering,' an ethos he continues with today as he balances work, charity and family. In the interview we revisit rugby history - what it was - and Nick’s opinion of what it is today. We hope you enjoy this edition where you will find photos of our locals, what’s on, local tips and more! Be sure to enter our competitions on page 6 and check out our new website www.livinglocalguide.com.au. Have a wonderful season!

NOT A GYM PERSON? After years in the fitness industry, I am still perplexed when I hear, "but I’m not a gym person". People talk about stress, being unhappy about their weight, or fitness. I have heard all the stories, excuses and reasons. In reality, a gym provides the best chance of achieving weight or fitness goals. Qualified staff can help with nutritional advice and fitness goals, and customise effective and achievable exercise programs. At Plus Fitness 24/7, we aim to be Australia’s friendliest clubs. We want to help you build confidence, independence, health and fitness. So, don’t feel like you’re not a gym person, come to our new clubs in Gordon and Turramurra and see yourself fitting right in. What your SUBURB MEANS BY ROBERT C. JOHNSTON, WRITER AND HISTORIAN
PYMBLE Named after Robert Pymble (1788-1861). He was a silk weaver who arrived from England in 1821. In 1823 he received a grant of 600 acres in the area as a reward for capturing a bushranger. Telegraph Road was named such because it sat on the route of the original telegraph line that ran from Parramatta to the coast.
ROSEVILLE Orchardist George Wilson lived in a beautiful stone cottage called Rose Villa in the mid1800s. To make way for the 1890 North Shore railway line his cottage was demolished but the station and suburb took the name Roseville. Loyal Henry Park is named after William Henry, a former private 10
in the Royal Marines who served in the Napoleonic Wars. After being transported as a convict in 1801 he came to know and admire Governor Bligh who granted him 1000 acres in the area and a government job. Upon Bligh’s forced removal during the Rum Rebellion, William Henry was bribed to betray Governor Bligh but he refused and suffered greatly for his loyalty.
ST IVES Early residents petitioned for a post office to be established in the area known prior as Rosedale, but because there was another post office called Rosedale in NSW the name St Ives was chosen, probably in honour of 1880s MP Sir Isaac Ellis Ives. Rosedale is still

An Aboriginal word meaning “big hill”. Irish Town Grove was named so because of the many Irish families who settled there from the mid-1800s. The Lookout was apparently purchased by a group of residents in 1908 so that it could be given to the council as a permanent public lookout.
WAITARA A New Zealand Maori word meaning "mountain stream". Waitara Creek is a fresh water stream that rises near the train station and flows to Berowra Creek. Pearces Corner, where Waitara, Wahroonga, and Normanhurst meet, is named incorrectly after Aaron Pierce, a convict turned timber-getter who built his hut around 1835 on the spot where three tracks met.
WARRAWEE Sainty Reserve was originally a part of the early estate of Joseph Sainty. And Warrawee is an Aboriginal word meaning "stop here". A fitting end to this edition’s local history page!

FIND MY IPHONE If you misplace your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Mac, Find My iPhone will locate it for you... And it’s entirely free! After setting up the app on each of your devices, it uses GPS to track exactly where your devices are. If you lose your device in your house, or you know it's nearby but aren’t sure where, Find My iPhone can help you. It is also useful to help keep track of the location of family members. It can play a sound at full volume on your misplaced device (even if the device is on silent), straight from your own iPhone. You can even remotely erase all personal data from a missing/ stolen device if you set up Find My iPhone on it beforehand. This is one of those apps that we all need.
HUNGRY SHARK EVOLUTION Need a time killer? Hungry Shark Evolution is the app for that. Explore the underwater world with the incredible 3D graphics of Hungry Shark Evolution. Eat sea creatures, swimmers, turtles and fisherman to stay alive as you swim around as a shark. Your shark will gradually get bigger and bigger as you progress in the game whilst you level-up and collect mystery items.
LEARN SPANISH WITH SPANISH SMASH Want to learn Spanish and play a fun game at the same time? Look no further! Learn Spanish with Spanish Smash is a fun app that can teach you over 240 useful Spanish words, including how to write them and their correct pronunciation. You can get a feel for the app by learning animals and numbers. If you like it, you can purchase additional categories and topics. It’s cheaper and probably more fun than paying a tutor to help you learn Spanish. Learn Spanish with Spanish Smash is available for free on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices.
EMERGENCY NUMBERS AUSTRALIA Have you ever been in such a state that you can't remember the emergency number when you need it? This app is great to avoid getting caught offguard in an emergency situation. It contains virtually all emergency (and important nonemergency) numbers and the app is really easy to navigate. You can contact most numbers with just two taps of the screen by using this app. Emergency Numbers Australia is available for $1.99 on iPhone and iPod Touch.

SOCIALLocal More importantly, Feuerbach’s and Freud’s logic simply does not work. The fact that human beings have longings for God, the afterlife and higher meaning tells you nothing about whether these things exist. The fact that humanity has longings that are satisfied by “the classical God and Jesus Christ” is no more an argument against these things than our physical thirst is an argument against the reality of water.
IN DEFENCE OF WISHING BY JOHN DICKSON, AUTHOR, ACADEMIC AND SENIOR MINISTER
When veteran journalist Peter Harvey passed away recently, a number of news outlets reported his surprising affirmation at the end: “I have a strong faith in the classical God and Jesus Christ.” It wasn’t what we expected to hear from such a ‘man of the world’. Harvey didn’t attend church, he said, but his faith was real. It is easy to be cynical about such close-to-death expressions of faith. At life’s end people long for heaven to be true, and so they find themselves believing it. Religion, in other words, is just a wish-fulfilment, humanity inventing stories to satisfy their existential thirst. This idea is repeated so often today we accept it as an obvious truth. But it is nowhere near as sound as many suppose. It 16
entered modern culture through the writings of two men, both Germans. Ludwig Feuerbach in 1840s wrote a book called Natural Religion in which he argued that religion, specifically Christianity, is a wish-fulfilment. Sigmund Freud picked up this idea and psychologised it. He said that our deep psychological longings are also projected onto our religious wish-fulfilment. At the time, however, people cheekily asked whether the same could be said of Freud’s and Feuerbach’s devout atheism. Could it be, they quipped, that these great men did not want there to be a God, and so they came to believe there was no God. There is surely an atheist wish-fulfillment as much as a Christian one.
LIVING LOCAL MAGAZINE WINTER 2013
Saint Augustine wrote in his Confessions, one of the most influential books in western history: “Man is one of your creatures, Lord, and his instinct is to praise you. The thought of you stirs him so deeply that he cannot be content unless he praises you, because you made us for yourself and our hearts find no peace until they rest in you.” Augustine’s argument, 1400 years before Feuerbach, was that Christianity is certainly a wishfulfilment. It just happens to be a true one. Just as water is the true wish-fulfilment of the parched woman, and food the true wishfulfilment of the starving man, so Christianity has fulfilled the longings of countless men and women through the ages, whether credulous Anglican ministers or hardened popular journalists. John Dickson is an Author, academic and the Senior Minister of St Andrew’s Anglican Church, Roseville. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

BY LOCAL PARENTS
We asked local parents to send in their tips. Baking little cupcakes. They love putting the icing on and decorating them with lollies. We also make our own play dough, play board games and go to the Movies! I will sign them up for football, and on wet days we will go to the movies as a family or my boys will have a play date with their mates from school!
Kathy Marinucci, St Ives
To keep kids (grandkids!) busy in the cooler months we take them to movies, museums and galleries - we learn as much from them as they do from us. Barbara Fuller, Wahroonga
Luke Macneil Ask them to plan and cook you some treats to eat. Depending on their ages, they might be able to do this unassisted, or if too young, they could help you create some delicious food. Jocelyn Kwan, Gordon I make play dough out of flour and water and it provides hours of fun for the kids! Debbie Mosselson, St Ives
This suggestion is for children aged eight and up. Most of the older children I know are obsessed with the computer game, Minecraft. There is an app called Papercraft which has paper designs of the Minecraft blocks and skins. You email yourself the designs from the app, then print, cut out and glue to create paper Minecraft people and blocks.
I keep the kids entertained with crafts - they really enjoy being creative especially with coloured sand art and making their very own board games! The great thing about board games is that they get to play with them after as well. Keeps them entertained for hours! Stephanie Ngui, Killara

BEAUTYFashion WINTER TIPS FOR YOUR FACE • Switch your foaming cleanser for a soothing gel cream instead, which will replenish lipids and soothe sensitivity. Try dermalogica’s UltraCalming Cleanser. • Sweep away flaky, dull skin cells with Daily Resurfacer that gently smooths and brightens while hydrating the skin at the same time.
Winterise YOUR SKIN
BY HUGH WILKINSON, DERMALOGICA® SPECIALIST With winter well and truly on its way, it's time to plan your best winter skin ever! Your skin may just need some extra TLC. Lower humidity levels, extreme cold, and varying indoor and outdoor environments can all cause damage to the skin's protective outer layer. Vital lipids between cells get stripped away leaving dangerous gaps in the natural defensive barrier. Irritants can get in, causing sensitivity and inflammation, while critical moisture gets sucked out. Your skin might feel dry, tight, itchy, thirsty and possibly tingly or stinging. It can look dull, flaky, drier around the eyes, and possibly pink on the cheeks. Being more sensitive and reactive Would you like a FREE to your usual products and sample of any of the above products? I'd been hunting for a lowmaintenance, everyday foundation that provides light cover and (since it's for every day) something without those nasty chemicals often found in make-up. Dr Hauschka, is exactly what I was after. While I prefer a heavier product when going out, this is perfect for my life as a busy mum.
Dr Hauschka's Novum Lipstick is one of the only lipsticks that I’ve used that doesn’t dry out my lips (I’ve tried many). The colour stays on reasonably well but I did have to reapply throughout the morning. All in all a great product as I’d rather reapply than have coloured dry lips. Sue Handisides Sales/Co-Editor

I was looking for a scrub that works without being harsh. I found this product after reading about endless online raves. Skin Plus, Pymble, kindly provided it to me to test. It is rice-based, with no artificial fragrances or colours, gently exfoliates, and doesn't dry out my skin like some others do. The only negatives are that since it's a powdery substance, it's a little messy until you add water and it's a bit pricey. But, overall, I loved it and it works! Edwina Hunter Editor/Designer

TAKING ON STOCKHOLM Roseville College Class of 2009 Alumni, Ashley Reeve, 21, is embarking on the internship of a lifetime with Swedish branding agency Seventy Agency, Stockholm, after excelling academically and graduating from Advertising and Marketing at University of Canberra. Ashley’s interest in the creative industry was fuelled while in Year 10 at Roseville College. It was
inspired through subjects such as Marketing in Business Studies and by working with creative software for her Visual Arts HSC major work. “I knew quite early that I wanted a career in this industry, and began looking into graphic design and advertising at career expos,” Ashley explains. “The specific areas I excel in are branding, art direction and design, for which I got a taste while in Senior School”.
“I wanted to experience everything the University had to offer including joining societies, and having a good balance of social and sporting activities, campus life and academic study. I also asked tutors and staff for feedback,” she is quoted as saying. While Ashley confesses that she doesn’t have a return ticket from Sweden, so she can freely allow her career to fly while abroad, she admits that her roots in Australia will eventually draw her home – hopefully to a Creative Director’s role, “but there is a long way to go before I get there,” she concludes. promise and curiosity. CAPTAIN OF THE 1991 RUGBY WORLD CUP WINNING TEAM, NICK FARR-JONES, WIFE ANGE, SON JOSH AND PUPPY GEORGE
At Home With Nick Farr-Jones Local resident and Australian rugby great, Nick Farr-Jones, takes us on a journey from where it all began to life today. Sitting on the balcony of his family home eating choc chip cookies and drinking tea, we had the pleasure of visiting this former Wallabies captain and ambassador, together with his lovely wife, Ange. Nick and Ange have four children, Jessica, Amy, Benjamin and Joshua and one extremely cute puppy named George. Nick remains one of the most respected and valued figures in Australian sport. He played for Australia for ten consecutive years
and was captain for five of those years, which included leading the Wallabies to their 1991 Rugby World Cup victory. Being one of the last to play in the amateur game, Nick was a lawyer by day. Since retiring from rugby, he has also worked in the banking sector and more recently the mining and resource sector. A born leader, Nick has led worldclass sports people and executed global business plans, motivating many to reach their dreams in sport and the corporate world.

PERSONAL You met your wife, Ange, while you were both at university and married her in 1989. Can you tell us about the early days and how she supported you and your rugby career? Ange had come up from Adelaide, so the least I could do was take her under my wing. Back then she had no idea about the game. She tells the story of watching me play a 1st grade game in 1983 at Sydney University where she asked my St Andrew’s College

mates whether they thought I was a good player. They replied, "Yeah, yeah, he’s actually a reasonable player. People are talking about him one day playing for Australia". When Ange told her family the news of her new boyfriend who might play rugby for Australia one day, Ange’s father (who knows and loves rugby) replied sarcastically, "Sure he will". The next year I put on a gold jersey and played for Australia. Later he came along on one of the long tours with us.
tour. Josh, my youngest boy, loves rugby so he was watching it. Amy came up behind him and commented that she had never seen me play. As you can see, I don’t have rugby memorabilia or tapes in my house and generally life is so busy that we don’t sit in front of TV much. Occasionally, Josh and I watch a Super game. Ange will watch it provided she knows someone who is playing.
Are you a rugby-watching family?
It is always different [with family], however, a lot of people forget I was playing in the amateur days. Jess was born two days before we played England while we were in Camp Wollongong preparing for the World Cup. I told my coach, "I am not sure when I will see you again" but it didn’t matter as we cleaned out England that Saturday. Two weeks later we beat
No, we don’t watch a lot of rugby. In fact, earlier this year, Amy, my second daughter who is nineteen, noticed a tape playing from the 1992 tour in South Africa (when South Africa had just opened up again; Mandela had been released). It was a documentary about the two-week four-match 28

Jess was two when we bought a place in Willoughby. Then we disappeared to Paris for four years. We bought in Lindfield in 2000. This place is fantastic! It reminds me of where I grew up. It’s leafy and has a quarter of an acre backyard where kids can run around. It has good schools where sports are encouraged and nonpretentious people. Do you have a favourite local cafe? I am not a big coffee drinker, but I would say Tablespoon (Lindfield) and Deli in the Park (East Lindfield). Your other great passion is supporting charities. Can you tell us about your volunteer work? Cardiac arrest is the biggest killer in the Western world. Ange works at CARDIAC Responder (CR) and I am a patron of the foundation. Cardiac arrest is electrical, which is different than a heart attack. The only way to bring a person back to life is to give them the shock. CR looks to deploy defibrillator/ AED rescue systems in work places. We put a few in the Australian Golf Club, and soon after, one of our staff had an arrest. He was www.livinglocalguide.com.au

The cause of the homeless is dear to me. We did a big event in 2008 and now have an annual sports person’s dinner to raise money. I also support Streetwork for those that fall through the cracks. I do a lot of different things! I am in China tomorrow, when I get back, I am hosting a golf day for NSW Rugby. We’re mentoring indigenous students to help them transition to future education or work.
RUGBY What do you miss about the amateur game? I miss long tours, three o’clock kick-offs, and a great thing the French call a troisième mi-temps (which translates as the third half). I have so many great mates around the word who I played against. Now, when it’s 7:30pm kick-off, there’s little chance to socialise with the opposition, so I don’t think they get those good strong relationships. Also, you could have a day job, so when they carried you out in your rugby coffin, life didn’t change. In 1991, John Major (then British Prime Minister) came in to my change room, he was in his pinstripe suit. I jumped out to
meet him and I was starkers! People took photos of us talking but luckily no one could flick it around the world like they might today. I enjoyed that. Simpler life, not as intrusive. Technology can over complicate life. All these things were fantastic about the amateur game but I knew the game had to change. I personally consider myself one of the last of the lucky ones. It’s encouraging for young people to know that you didn’t start playing until you were thirteen and then weren’t selected to play in your school's 1st XV. How did you get from there to representative rugby? I was always someone who

worked my arse off. In sport I wanted to be very good at it. I was a pretty good player at school. I wasn’t disappointed not to have played 1st XV, but let me say this, there were a lot of guys who were big fish in a small pond. I had unfinished business. I was very hungry. You get a lot of kids, around 17-19 years old who lose a real hunger but I was very hungry. I never had an ambition or dream to play for the Wallabies. I never really thought about it. But every time I put on a uni or NSW jersey I just wanted to play as well as I could. What was Alan Jones like as a coach? How long have you got? [laughs] I was lucky to have Alan as a coach, an amazing person in many ways. He taught me a lot of things but it is well documented that 1987 was a tough year and our friendship broke down a little bit. Then when Bob Dwyer, who replaced Jones in 1988, appointed me as captain out of the blue (I would have thought I was about eighth in line), Jones, in a way, turned on 30
me. He must have thought I was part of his downfall but nothing could be further than the truth. Jones might have been critical of me personally, or our team, and I would respond very publically, which is sometimes not wise when you’re dealing with Alan. It didn’t bother me. Anyway, we broke bread about six years ago when we had a reunion, with the 1984 team, at his place in the Southern Highlands. We get on fine now. I think there’s a mutual respect and I have great admiration for his preparedness to put some blood, sweat and tears into a lot of good causes.

How did your Christian faith impact your rugby career? When you’re on tour, interacting closely to people, they get to see you and your heart. I would like to think I impacted people’s hearts. It is the little stuff. I was never banging people over the heads but we had debates and discussions about it. There were years when I was fired up for God and years when I wasn’t going so well. Christianity is a roller coaster journey. It doesn’t mean you get a red carpet. I never prayed for success, except in 1991. I am unashamed about that. I knew it was going to be my last roll of the dice, the World Cup and I wanted the team to do

really well so there was prayer for a long time about it. If you look at the greatest game against Ireland maybe there was a touch of intervention [laughs]. What was the highlight of your rugby career and was it a tough decision to retire? I expect what will be chiselled on my rugby tombstone is that I was lucky enough to captain the team. But for me it’s other highlights, probably more off the field. The mateship is the real highlight. It wasn’t a difficult decision to retire, even after twenty years I cherish the mateship. On the field, I was lucky enough to be in a great team that won a world cup, some of the great tours, wins against the All Blacks and just pulling on your jersey for the first time, are all highlights for me. www.livinglocalguide.com.au

you communicate and include everyone. It’s the same as in a business environment. Involving everyone in what you are going after is important. Too often, senior people don’t include the juniors in a work environment. Where did your mantra "I don’t want to die wondering" come from? It’s just an expression. Allan Jones once said, "Long after the price is forgotten the quality remains". So, here I am talking to you guys, 20 years into retirement, I don’t remember the pain or the hard work. It is hard to get to the top in anything without hard work, you pay a price. I tell kids, it's worth it. The quality remains. In 2011 we set ourselves a challenge to help the local Rural Fire Service (RFS) and State Emergency Service (SES) to engage with the local Ku-ring-gai community to raise the estimated $200,000 needed to undertake the internal fit out of the new $3.2 million Headquarters buildings at Golden Jubilee Field, North Wahroonga. Our Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank® branches have been full of posters asking our customers to donate to the cause and our Directors and bank staff have twice turned out in force to join the RFS and SES members for early morning “bucket” collections conducted at every local railway

During May, we held the Turramurra Staff Grants night and gave away tickets to the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic’s Kids Proms that was held on 19 May. We also supported the Novus Foundation at their annual fund-raising event and were present at the opening of HeroHQ by The Premier on the 25 May. Coming up in June is the inaugural Ku-ring-gai Community Bank® annual Bowls Tournament – the Ku-ring-gai Cup - and our first game as new sponsors of Gordon Rugby Club. If there is one thing we like to do it is connecting people; that’s what a strong, supportive community is all about. If you want to become more involved in the community and help those who need it then don’t hesitate to move your personal or business banking to the Community Bank® that makes a positive, long-term difference to your local community. The Ku-ring-gai Chase The inaugural ‘Ku-ring-gai Chase’ fun run was held on Sunday 17 March on a perfect day at Claude Cameron Grove in North Wahroonga. The event provided an opportunity for Special Olympics athletes to actively demonstrate their love of sport, community and leadership through connections with the local community. More than 70 Knox Grammar School students volunteered to run or walk alongside a child with a disability on the day. The event is a fundraiser for the North Shore Special Olympics and participants had a choice of a 4.5km or a 9km walk/run. The funds that were raised are being used to provide a motor skills program for more than 350 students with an intellectual disability in the northern Sydney region. “We were very proud to be sponsors of the inaugural “Ku-ring-gai Chase” and support such a wonderful, worthy cause. We hope to be involved with this very special event in the future”, said Denice Kelly, Branch Manager, Turramurra Community Bank® Branch of Bendigo Bank. 34

COMMUNITYNews SCHOOL BANKING WITH YOUR COMMUNITY BANK® By Warren Dwyer, Branch Manager, Lindfield Community Bank® Branch
Opening a bank account for your child is a great way to introduce them to the concept of saving and to teach them what banking is all about. A lot of us remember having passbook accounts at school when we were little back in the ‘old days’. Well, school banking is still alive and well. We have recently introduced our school banking program at Lindfield East Public School that is open to all classes from Kindergarten to Year 6 and we are thrilled to have more than 80 children participating in the program. All the students who chose to open an account received a package that included a Bank Passbook, a pencil case and a “Piggy” money box. Any child who has opened their account with a deposit of $5, will receive an additional $5 contribution to their account from the Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank® Branches to help them along their savings path. Please give Warren a call if you would like to find out more about our school banking program or to discuss any of your banking needs on 0434 730 976.
STAFF GRANTS “Staff Grants” is an exciting new initiative undertaken by our Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank® Branches where each member of the staff has the opportunity to nominate a local community group to receive a small grant to be invested in a community project. Lindfield Community Bank® Branch’s inaugural “Staff Grants” event was held at their branch on the 14 March and was attended by approximately 30 people including customers, bank personnel including Chairman, David Langdon, Denice Kelly and Vicki Atkins. Cheques were presented to representatives from Cromehurst Foundation, Wild Things, Lady Game Community Kindergarten and Monika’s Doggie Rescue. Turramurra Staff Grants night was held on Thursday 2 May at their Branch and approximately 50 people attended. Recipients were Marian Street Theatre for Young People Inc., OLPS P&F Association, Ku-ring-gai Meals on Wheels Service, Diaverum Pty Ltd, St Lucy’s School, Warrawee Public School Special Needs and Alzheimer’s Australia NSW Northern Region. The wonderful and compelling stories told by our inaugural Grants recipients has convinced us to make the ‘Staff Grants’ Program an integral part of our future community contributions and each branch now plans to conduct two ‘Staff Grants’ events per year.
GORDON RUGBY CLUB SPONSORSHIP Turramurra and Lindfield Community Bank® Branches are proud to announce that we have signed on as one of the sponsors of the Gordon Rugby Club for the 2013 season. This is the first time that we have been involved in sponsoring a first grade sport. As part of our arrangement with the club we have field signage and there is an opportunity for our customers to join us on our two game days. “While we have been involved in many sports sponsorships over the last ten years, we are thrilled to be associated with an elite rugby club in NSW for the first time”, said David Langdon, Chairman, Ku-ring-gai Financial Services Limited.

YOURHealth DISC HERNIATION (DISC RUPTURE)
Chronic Back Pain SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS BY KRYSTYNA ZAWADZKA, SOMATHERAPY Low back pain is one of the most common medical problems in the Western world. Approximately 80% of the population suffers from it at least once during their life. In most cases low back pain originates in the intervertebral joints and the back muscles. Certain occupations have increased risk of developing low back pain e.g. secretaries and drivers exert pressure on the spine by prolonged sitting, and nurses and workers carrying heavy loads due to lifting. Smoking is a risk factor for development of back pain, probably because of a decrease in the supply of oxygen to the intervertebral discs. I will outline in more detail some conditions causing low back pain.
DEGENERATION OF THE DISCS AND INTERVERTEBRAL JOINTS (SPONDYLOSIS)
Over time, the intervertebral discs undergo a process of ageing: the fluid content diminishes (the disc dries out) and the disc becomes thinner. The length of the spinal column decreases causing a significant loss of height. Disc degeneration produces back pain in several ways. It affects the ability of the disc to absorb shocks and in result the spine becomes unstable. Instability of the spine leads to inflammation of the joints and the appearance of tiny bony outgrowths around the joints, called osteophytes. They can press on adjacent nerves and cause pain. Inflammation of the joints in itself also causes pain due to nerve irritation. Narrowing of the discs brings the vertebrae nearer together, resulting in narrowing of the openings between them, producing compression (pinching) of the nerves.
The weakening caused by ageing, extreme pressure on disc when lifting a heavy weight or sudden movements can rupture fibrous ring around disc and the gel 'escapes' from disc and might press on spinal nerve nearby. Pain in the lower back radiates down the leg on the side of the rupture (herniation). The leg pain results from irritation of the nerve that innervates the leg.
PAIN ARISING FROM A VERTEBRAL BODY This may include: osteoporotic fractures, cancer, bacterial infection of the vertebrae, pain arising from internal organs, psychological causes.
MYOFASCIAL PAIN Pain of myofascial origin arising from the spinal muscles and other muscles referring pain to the lower back. This is far too often overlooked. Myofascial pain can be severe and debilitating, and can cause restrictions in the joint function, impairment of neurological function, impairment of circulation and lymphatic flow. The common triggers of the referred pain to the low back are Psoas muscle and Rectus Abdominis muscle. Pain from Psoas muscle refers/radiates pain to the low back in a vertical pattern while pain from abdominal muscle Rectus Abdominis refers pain to the low back in a horizontal direction across the lower back.

WHAT IS SOMATHERAPY Krystyna of Somatherapy has extensive professional training and experience in the treatment of many forms of myofascial pain and dysfunction. She is a certified practitioner in the clinical application of the Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy (FSM), with a diploma in Myofascial Release and Government accreditation in Tactile Therapy (highest level). Traditional approaches to chronic pain are not always effective. Krystyna provides therapy with a difference, changing what is possible in pain management. She offers highly specialised, non-invasive and painless manual therapy, in combination with the latest 40

YOURHealth CHRONIC BACK PAIN, SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS (CONT FROM PG 38) The diagrams shown below may give you better understanding of your chronic referred pain pattern and location of its source – 'where the pain is coming from' - in relation to these muscles. This abdominal muscle is used to bend forward the lumbar spine and initiating getting out of a low chair. It stabilises the pelvis during walking and depresses the ribcage. Tightness of this muscle (often if Psoas, on the same side, is tight) gives a sense of being full and results in horizontal back pain.

The Psoas muscle is the keystone of a balanced, well-organised body, core muscle. It is a massive muscle that directly links ribcage and trunk with the legs. There are two Psoas muscles, one attaching on either side of the lumbar spine. The kidneys, the bladder, viscera and reproductive organs lie in front of the psoas. There is the vital and dynamic interrelationship of the psoas with the diaphragm, organs and nerves that gives the psoas muscle a powerful unifying function. Psoas often get tight during fall to, makes body rigid, to prevent 'more' injury' protective/survival response.
In the pelvis the result of a shortened psoas include forward thrust, lateral tilt and twisting and differences in rotation and length in the legs. It causes low back pain, groin pain, increased lordosis of lumbar spine. Next edition, Krystyna will continue to discuss/explore more underlying problems with chronic low back pain. YOURHealth PERFECTIONISM: • Creates unrealistic goals • Is more concerned with avoiding disapproval and rejection • Measures personal value by accomplishments
Moving beyond PERFECTIONISM WRITTEN BY TINA VARTIS, FREELANCE WRITER AND COUNSELLOR
When you hear the words perfectionism and excellence, what comes to mind? Do these words hold the same meaning for you or is there a sense that these two words originate from different ‘operating’ systems? On the surface, both words would appear to imply the pursuit of outstanding quality – whether at work, at home or in our relationships. However, beneath the surface, at the heart of these two systems lies their differences. Perfectionism operates from a system of fear and excellence operates from a system of love. A perfectionist is more concerned with the unending search for ways to avoid failure and prevent disappointment in life in order to feel valuable and acceptable to others, because an error in the
mind of a perfectionist would imply that they are neither valuable or acceptable to others and themselves. However, a person striving towards excellence, is motivated from a position of love which is more concerned with doing their best by developing a healthy, strong character, secure in their own self worth, cultivating good habits in order to rise above mediocrity in pursuit of what they value. Has perfectionism crept into your life? Do you draw others closer to you or do you push them away when either you or they fail? Are you angry and unforgiving with others for letting you down? Do you get frustrated, impatient and beat yourself up over things you overlooked, couldn’t foresee, didn’t check?
• Dwells on mistakes • Is excessively sensitive and fearful of criticism • Can have an ‘all or nothing’ attitude • Downplays strengths • Expects others to put in the same level of effort and become frustrated when they don’t
EXCELLENCE: •
People value themselves for who they are and possess a healthy self image that remains intact whether errors are made or not
• Sets realistic goals • Means rising above disappointments and moving on • Enjoys the process along the way • Learns from mistakes • Takes a person beyond their comfort zone
Perfectionism not only holds us back, but sets us up to fail in all spheres of life. In moving beyond perfectionism towards excellence, remember to give yourself permission to make a mistake, knowing that lessons learnt from mistakes help us to grow, leading us to becoming more gracious towards ourself and others. Value your strengths and don’t understimate those things in life which come naturally to you. It’s important to note, that self worth is inherent and does not change by what we do or what has been done to us, or said about us. Moving beyond perfectionism requires courage and patience to overcome our fears and embrace life fully. 42

WARM UP THIS WINTER Winter is a pivotal time for weight gain. It’s estimated that 38% of females are likely to gain 2-5 kg this winter. Winter for most of us means eating more and moving less! In summer we consume more raw, fresh and cold meals and as the weather gets cooler we look for more hot comfort foods that are higher in both calories and fat! 44
Furthermore, in summer the weather is more conducive to being active outdoors and as winter arrives it keeps us inside more, under doonas and watching more television. Combine the two - eating more and moving less and it’s a recipe for a heavier and unhealthier you! If this sounds like you, we have a great solution... visit Body Shape

will, legacies and care directives. Both tools are designed to encourage families to talk about and plan for scenarios such as what kind of care they might like if they were unable to communicate in the future. “Our experience has shown many families don’t have this information and they may never have broached some of these subjects ’’ says local franchise owner John Quirk. These are great tools to help get preparations started - open and informed communication can lead to positive experiences, in addition to averting crisis situations.

SOCIALPages will frequently report bleeding or sensitivity when eating or cleaning the teeth and at the later stages, the gums often recede and the teeth loosen. This inflammatory process can readily be treated by your dentist or dental specialist through precise deep cleaning to remove any irritating factors and targeted oral hygiene techniques.
Healthy Gums = HEALTHY HEART DR LAURENCE MCCARTHY, BMEDSCI, BDENT (HON) Could your gums be increasing your risk of a heart attack or stroke? It may sound a little far-fetched but there is a growing body of evidence to suggest that there is a relationship between oral health and heart disease. More specifically, studies have led health professionals to believe that gum disease may be associated with an increased risk of vascular disease. It is thought that the increased presence of bacteria that is found in patients with inflamed gums can lead to atherosclerosis, the process whereby depositing collects on the inside of the artery walls. The bacteria that is required for this disease process comes from inflammation in the supporting tissues around the teeth, including the gums, bone, and ligaments. When this 46
inflammation is on the surface tissues, it is called gingivitis but as this inflammatory process spreads deeper into the tissues around the roots of the teeth, it is called periodontitis. Some epidemiological studies have demonstrated that severe chronic periodontitis increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, even after adjusting for a number of traditional risk factors such as age, gender, diabetes, smoking and family history*. However as both diseases share many common risk factors there is a need for further studies to uncover the exact biological processes behind this relationship. Regular brushing and flossing are essential in the prevention of periodontal diseases, such as periodontitis which is characterised by bad breath and a reddening of the gums. Patients

For more information on how oral conditions may be affecting your overall health, contact your GP or Dentist. There is obviously still a lot of research that has to be done in order to fully understand this process but from what we know already, it is clear that there are multiple reasons to ensure that our gums are kept healthy. The humble toothbrush might just be the first line of defence against serious heart conditions.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR PREVENTING GUM DISEASE • Brushing for two minutes, twice daily
• Daily cleaning between the teeth eg flossing or using interproximal brushes • Regular six monthly dental check ups and cleans *Cullinan MP, Ford PJ, Seymour GJ. NEPAL TRIP 2013 BY ALLAN WALDON, EASTERN ROAD QUALITY MEATS The 2013 charity trek into the remote valleys of Nepal was a "cracker". We trekked into the foothills of the Himalayas with Manaslu, the world's eighth highest mountain (8000+ metres), in the background. The weather was fantastic, with cool nights and clear warm sunny days. The views are spectacular and the people so welcoming. We trekked up to 20km each day camping in school grounds overnight, normally to the sound of local music on the drums. In total, over the ten days we visited 16 schools, women and youth groups, and many villages. Bendigo Community Bank at Turramurra donated 22 drums, all made locally. They will be the only musical instrument in many of these schools. Anne Prescott, Craig Ley, Warren and Dympna Sly were on this trip, adding to their already

generous donations and ongoing support. They supplied sporting equipment, hair ribbons and pencils. In one school, blankets, mattresses and floor coverings were provided for the hostel which houses 40 students sleeping two to a bed. I must thank other local business people who provided financial support. Scott Chadwick from Chadwick Real Estate in Turramurra, for three years of support, Ray and Pam Sleap of Cards Only, also long term supporters (Ray couldn’t make this trip and was missed), the generous people of Turramurra, along with Wahroonga Rotary and all those who donated to the bone bucket. These schools have gone from leaking dirt floor buildings, without desks, books, pencils or stationery to well-fitted schools where the kids are learning and happy. We directly support five

Bhairabi Primary School was our first project in 2006. It had 39 students and was falling over. It was extremely pleasing to see how these schools have been turned around and how the students now have hope. It is now totally rebuilt with 154 students. We employ six of the seven staff. The building is weather proof, cement rendered inside and out and with upstairs accommodation for volunteers that can sleep six with a shower and Western toilet. They even have a laptop shared between three schools now - five years ago they didn't have a book! It is always hard leaving the village, not knowing when you might return but I must say that the people that support this cause and there are many, have made a huge positive impact in the living standard of these people, of which over 3000 benefit in some way. The bone bucket at Eastern Road Quality Meats has been a great source of fundraising for Nepal. Thank you for your generosity.

A TRIP DOWN SOUTH Less than two hours drive from the Upper North Shore and half an hour south of Wollongong you will find the picture postcard Jamberoo Pub where you can grab a drink in the relaxed atmoshphere and in winter, warm up near the open fire. The bistro serves great meals if you’re there around lunch or dinner time. A short drive from the pub and up Fountaindale Road towards Saddleback Mountain lookout, where it’s plain to see, why they describe this area as "where the mountains meet the sea". Don’t forget your camera the view is amazing! Head down the hill from the lookout into Kiama and be sure to check out the famous blowhole and if you’re there on the third Sunday of each month you could check out the Kiama seaside markets before you head back north. I’m sure you will enjoy your day out.

Over 12,000km from an obstetric hospital in Ethiopia, a world first for the famous fistula hospital has taken place in Sydney. Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia has opened its first retail store in the world, on the same the day that thousands of Australians will receive a personal appeal from the hospital’s founder, Dr Catherine Hamlin AC. The Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia Turramurra store is the brainchild of the small but creative Sydney team: Lucy and Bruce Perry, Tanya Seabrook and Emma Cohen. 54

Many Sydney-siders will be familiar with the best-seller Hospital by the River by Dr Catherine Hamlin. This book tells the remarkable story of the Hamlins and their life in Ethiopia. Dr Hamlin lives in Addis Ababa to this day and at age 89 still operates each week with a team of surgeons. Her staff of over 700 local Ethiopians run the network of six Hamlin hospitals, a midwifery college and a training centre for long-term patients. The hospital and college costs over $4.5million per year to operate and with a budget shortfall this year, Dr Hamlin has written to Australians with an appeal called 600 for 600. “It costs $600 to fund a fistula operation and restore a woman’s dignity,” says Dr Hamlin. Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia needs 600 people or organisations to donate or raise $600 before 30 June. For details or to donate visit hamlin.org.au/600. BEYONDLocal crater that was once a china clay pit, what would you do with it? A number of dedicated, visionary individuals and companies worked during the 1990’s to create this 35 acre living laboratory, an educational global garden that explores, inspires and celebrates our relationship with plants. The massive Biomes, the world’s largest conservatories, are home to both Mediterranean and rainforest climates and outside, one of the many interesting sculptures is “WEEEman”, created using over three tonnes of electronic equipment that demonstrates what the average person throws away in their lifetime - it really makes you think which, personally, I feel is the ultimate aim of this amazing and inspiring corner of the world.
Local reader's TRIP TO THE UK BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS, TURRAMURRA After migrating from London with Mike almost 12 years ago and buying the garden centre, we finally managed to get back to the UK in March for a longoverdue holiday. The reason for the trip was to spend time with family and friends of course, but whilst travelling between them we found ourselves revisiting places that we hadn’t been to for many years. Memories of holidays in southern England came flooding back and although the weather was mostly cold, colder and downright freezing, the scenery was as breathtaking as ever, from the snow covered fields in Kent to Cornwall’s sandy beaches.
As is usual for us, we couldn’t seem to switch off from work so we inevitably found ourselves poking around nurseries and gardens of historic houses. However, the highlight of our green life "tour" was in Cornwall in the far south-west of England. On a bright and sunny, but bitterly cold day we were amazed by a quite unique environmental masterpiece known as the Eden Project.
There is no other place quite like the Eden Project, so if you’re planning a trip to the UK please try to make time to explore this exceptional and beautiful phenomenon or go to www.edenproject.com

HUX DINING BY SUE HANDISIDES Jay Huxley and his team at the newly-opened Hux Dining in Roseville treated us to a lovely lunch - an experience that I would happily recommend to anyone.
World barista COMPETITIONS
The atmosphere is lovely, food and wine amazing, with everything on the menu very reasonably priced. Well done, Jay, on making fine dining feel so comfortable yet classy! We’ll be back for sure.
WRITTEN BY DAN YEE, SALVAGE SPECIALTY COFFEE
Believe it or not there is an actual global competition scene for baristas. Driven by the Specialty coffee community worldwide, there are events held throughout the year to find the best baristas in the world to compete at the World Barista Championships and World Brewers Cup. Recently, for the first time ever, it was held in Melbourne, Victoria. I have been involved in competitions for the past five years, mainly as a judge, but more recently as a competitor in the Brewers Cup: something I find a great challenge and extremely daunting. Year after year, I am completely blown away by the rise in standards and innovative ways baristas are pushing the boundaries of coffee brewing, flavour, professionalism and 10
presentation. Many of the disciplines adopted by some of the top coffee bars and cafes around the world stem from the innovative, specialty-minded baristas, some of which enter into the competition scene. The competition scene harvests not only some great ideas moving the industry forward but also raises the bar on what is to be expected at your local cafĂŠ. I see this as the difference between an actual barista and someone who is merely an espresso machine operator. It is great to see that some of the methods I used to see as innovative are now seen as standards among many of the cafes along the north shore. This only means one thing, a better coffee for us! MAKING ALL THE DIFFERENCE BY SUSAN POTTHURST, ELEGANT OUTDOORS, TURRAMURRA
and decks and work on them one at a time. Thinking of selling your home? Whilst a lick of paint and a bit of de-cluttering will go some way to making your home more attractive to your potential buyers, your outdoor areas are more important than you may think and must not be forgotten. The common perception is that it will take too much time and money to put right, so the garden ends up right at the bottom of the “to-do” list. A carefully planned makeover is very achievable and doesn’t mean you have to take out a second mortgage, so use the winter months to get through the bulk of the work by following these simple tips. Remember, most people don’t see the details of a garden, they notice the overall effect. Focus on the areas that are most likely to be seen first - pathways and borders, areas visible from windows, near the front door and the entertaining areas like patios
Weed garden beds, concentrating on the areas closest to adjoining lawns and paths and focus on making the edges look sharp. If you can’t mulch the entire bed, get good coverage on the edges and the first metre, then apply the mulch in a much thinner layer working towards the back. Ensure paved and decked areas are clean andfree of moss and mould - Wet & Forget® is a noncaustic, non-acidic, easy to apply product that is fine to use around plants. Clean, bright, non-slippery high traffic areas are not only safe and aesthetically pleasing, they will also make the rest of the garden look fresh and inviting Plants give a welcoming feeling to visitors, so mass plant large pots and place them at your front

door, either side of a set of steps or in an area that needs softening like a deck or by the garage. Don’t forget your indoor plants too. A Peace Lily on the kitchen bench, an Anthurium with its longlasting flowers in the family room and an elegant Phalaenopsis Orchid in the bathroom add colour and style.
Please don’t skimp on your garden, don’t think you’ll kill every plant before your house goes on the market and don’t leave the makeover to the last minute! Visit your local independent garden centre for advice and quality plants. Be as proud of your clean and tidy garden as you are of your clean and tidy house and your property will be the one that everyone wants to buy!

Choosing A Pet We have a lot of choice in pets and our pet often becomes our best friend and companion. Here are a few things to do and not to do when choosing a pet:
sometimes our desires don’t really fit our needs. You might ask a close relative what kind of pet might fit your life style. Don’t be impulsive.
NO IMPULSE SHOPPING
Take the time to learn about the kind of pet you are considering buying. Pet stores sometimes have a built-in bias to sell the animals. Books are somewhat better but often the negative aspects of a species are glossed over. Remember that a new pet can change the structure of a family so needs to be acceptable to all family members.
Try not to adopt or purchase a pet on a whim or inspiration. Make it a deliberate, thoughtout action. Buying a pet at a pet shop because it looks so adorable is not a good way to add another longterm member to your family. Sometimes we are not the best judges of our needs and
